    Eleven Things You Probably Didn't Know About The Corsair
    As divulged by Mr. Neil Gaiman (from The Brilliant Book 2012)
    1. His TARDIS looked like a sailing ship whenever it was practical - and sometimes even when it wasn’t - because small, piratical sailing ships are cool.
    2. The Ouroboros tattoo, showing a snake eating its own tail and symbolising Eternity, moved around the Corsair’s body with each regeneration. The largest version was huge and multi-colored and covered the Corsair’s entire back. The smallest version was the size of a ten pence piece and was discreetly inked upon the Fifth Corsair’s upper thigh.
    3. The Corsair met his doom while working for the Time Lords on the Fourth Universal Survey Expedition. They were surveying the whole universe. It’s a big place. Somebody has to keep track of it.
    4. Most Time Lords disapproved of the Corsair. The Doctor, on the other hand, got drink with him (in the Corsair’s Fourth and Eighth incarnations) and with her (in her Fifth). Each time, the Doctor swore he would never do it again. Twice, they woke up in jail. Once, they woke up in the Bank of England vaults.
    5. The Corsair took his name from a term for ‘privateer’ - a sort of legitimate pirate. Some people assumed that this was because the Corsair did things for the Time Lords that they could deny responsibility for - such as stealing the secret of the Callisto Pulse from the Callistan Kleptocracy. The Corsair denied having stolen the Callisto Pulse. The Time Lords denied having asked him to steal it. The Callistans would like their pulse back.
    6. The Corsair never actually fought the Daleks. But her seventh incarnation was definitely spotted on Clarkor Nine the night the Dalek Scout Ship landed. On the following day the nine Daleks on the saucer discovered that their weapon arms and their suction cup arms had somehow been removed in the night, rendered inoperable, and fused together into a shape that means something very rude in Skarosian. They left immediately and did not return. The Corsair’s role in this is unclear.
    7. The Corsair visited Earth a number of times in its history. He was worshipped as a god by the ancient Assyrians until he got bored after a week and went off with the sacred temple cat.
    8. In ever incarnation the Corsair had an amazing smile. It was variously described as ‘reckless” ‘roguish’, or ‘very bad girl’. Whatever race or gender the Corsair was, he or she smiled the kind of smile that made the person being smiled at want to trust the person who was smiling, run of with him or her, and get into all manner of trouble. Sometimes people did.
    9. The Corsair liked having a cat and, sometimes, a parrot aboard his TARDIS. He never had a companion, however, preferring to travel alone. (Having said that, the Corsair took enormous pleasure in Rescuing Good Looking People from Dangerous Situations, but rarely stuck around long enough to be properly thanked.)
    10. The Time Lord High Council formally censured the Corsair following the disappearance of the mysterious Portrait of Rassilon in Lord President Borusa’s time. The Censure was later formally revoked by President Flavia, for reasons she declined to go into, although she was once heard to say that the Corsair had an extremely attractive smile.
    11. By the time the Ninth Corsair (a strapping big bloke, he was) realised he had been trapped on the intelligent asteroid that called itself House, his TARDIS had already been killed and eaten. He recorded a distress message, but before he could send it there was a tap on his shoulder and he felt and thought nothing more, not ever again.
    --------
    Also, there's a (non-canonical, as far as such things go in Doctor Who) Thirteenth Doctor comic book where the Doctor meets the Corsair. Chibnall has no involvement, so it's actually pretty good.

  •  4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    As for the whole "not meeting any other Time Lords", I think the (non-canonical?) explanation is that Time Lords generally align themselves to the Gallifreyan time zone. Since Gallifrey is in the (subjective) past, all the Time Lords are in the (subjective) past. It doesn't matter where on the (objective) universal timeline the TARDIS lands, they're always going to be in the (subjective) past. Other time travelers, like Jack Harkness or River Song, don't follow the same convention, which is why they can meet the Doctor "out of order".

    I appreciate the call out to I, Claudius, a terrific 13 episode mini series from the 70's. In addition to Derek Jacobi it stars Brian Blessed, Sian Phillips, George Baker, John Hurt and a very young Patrick Stewart amongst others. Oh, and there were six Caesars who were Emperor of Rome: Julius, Augustus, Tiberius, Caligula, Claudius and Nero. Claudius was indeed Caligula's uncle, risen to power after Caligula was overthrown and killed. Looking forward to The Three Doctors!

    • @TheZodiacz
      @TheZodiacz 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're referring to the 6 Julio-Claudians who ruled in Rome. Julius was Dictator, the plot to kill him was because the Republicans realized he could become king which was anathema to conservative Romans then. The later emperors used the title Caesar too of course, which lead to it's use as a term for king in other countries eg, czar, kaiser, shah. I Claudius was a wonderful series, as are the books I Claudius and Claudius The God.

    Since time lords live so long and can regenerate multiple times, they probably don’t see it as abandoning family if they disappear for long stretches of time.
    There’s also probably no rush for time lords to begin time lording. Maybe training can take up an entire first lifetime.

  • @natsmith303

    The most hilarious implication of the TARDIS always taking the Doctor where he needs to go is that time it dropped the Seventh Doctor into San Francisco in the middle of a gang fight.

    • @shauntempley9757
      @shauntempley9757 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Even funnier is one of those gangs is one he founded. The Doctor Who novel Bullet Time shows why 7 is doing it.
      It is a novel that fills in the blanks. Also Sarah Jane is investigating the same events, so assists 7. Ace is on Gallifrey training to be a Time Lady by then. 7 drops her off in an earlier novel. He also mentions it to Sarah in Bullet Time, because she had contact with the Brigadier, whom told her Ace was the companion, so asked him where she was. Since they met in Remembrance Of The Daleks, and Bullet Time takes place many adventures after.
      Big Finish is doing the company that Sarah Jane Adventures mentioned Ace running, when 11 met Sarah and Jo .
      This is because Ace is sent back to Earth with her memory wiped by the Time Lords, specifically Balaxiatel, the Doctor's brother, because the Time War had fully begun, and she was a full Time Lady, because she graduated the Academy.
      Ace was active as a Time Lady when Romana was Lady President. She shows up in the Gallifrey audios. Leela also shows up here.

    I, Claudius is very good, with amazing acting and writing and typical 1970s BBC sets. Based on Rupert Graves’ books, also superb. It’s a rewriting of history, a secret diary of Claudius which portrays him as trying to bring down the Empire and restore the Republic. And unlike his portrayal in the histories of Tacitus, Claudius is actually very intelligent. Well worth a watch.
    Suranne Jones, as Idris, is quite superb, one of the best guest performances on the show I think.

    For me,this is just too full of ideas. Gaiman throws in a lot of different concepts;but it all feels too busy. Particularly as the interaction and repartee between the Doctor and TARDIS/Idris should be the essence of the story,but it keeps getting interrupted by the other sub-plots. It's not until toward the end that the interaction becomes poignant.
    Suranna Jones plays Idris. She's a striking actress with great presence. She ought to have been cast as the first female Doctor,imo - but she's terrific in everything in which she appears (she played the Mona Lisa in SJA)
    Remember the reference to The Eye of Orion (a restful place to visit). It will gain significance.
    Remember.

  • @Mrazmatmahmood
    @Mrazmatmahmood 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I really like this episode, but I think it is a little overrated because I don't think it's as good as most people say it is. Suranne Jones was amazing as the Tardis though and Matt Smith gave one of his best performances in this episode. Arthur Darvill and Karen Gillan gave strong performances in this episode too, their scenes inside the Tardis are properly eerie. The obligatory Rory death really annoys me of course, but the way that entire sequence plays out is very effectively done.

    This episode is a brilliant encapsulation of the bond between the Doctor and his Tardis. It's such a fantastic idea to give the Tardis a body, so it can finally speak. It's great to get hear the Tardis' perspective on things, such as calling the Doctor's companions "strays". The conversations between it and the Doctor are some of the most entertaining in the shows history and they add so much to the show's mythos too. You realise that companions come and go, but the one constant is always the Tardis. The Doctor's oldest and most loyal friend. The final scene between the two is surprisingly, very emotional. Seeing the old console room got me emotionally, it's my "home" so to speak. It might just be nostalgia, but that'll always be my favourite console room.

The reaction is too biased towards the one who has already seen the series and is aware of the ongoing story. If you're ambition is to watch the whole series together from the 63 beginning then that is what it should be.
