This is one of those series that I didn't want to end at the time, but am glad it went out on a consistent level of quality. It remains my favourite version of Robin Hood and has influenced many of the Hollywood films that came after it, usually at a very surface level. Nothing has managed to replicate the wonderful atmosphere and mystical atmosphere of this show.
There’s no finer telling of the legend of Robin Hood than this wonderful, truly captivating series and I’m glad you’ve enjoyed it so much. It’s been a pleasure watching your reactions to it; laughter, tears, the whole range of questions you asked, and answers that were provided, all with the bonuses of a great cast, brilliant writing, beautifully performed music and stunning English scenery. Forty years after it aired I’m still moved by the eponymous line: nothing’s forgotten. Nothing is ever forgotten. So must it be. Thank you, Alexa, for sharing your journey and bringing back so many happy memories!
Loved your reactions. RoS is the best version of Robin Hood legend. Yesterday I had the pleasure to be at the farewell Clannad concert celebrating 40th anniversary of the show. Introduced by none other than Michael Praed and Jason Connery arguing who is the REAL Robin Hood 😂. They played most of the music from the show and at some point brought on stage most of the cast. Little John, Nasir, Lady Marian, both Robins and Sheriff of Nottingham 40 years older together on stage with Clannad was such an amazing experience ❤❤❤.
When I watched season 3 as a teenager back in the 80's I couldn't get used to the transition from Praed to Connery, and I never really gave the season a chance (I barely retained any memory of it). Watching it again, even in just clips, makes me realize that season 3 was not only just as good as the first two but was in some ways _superior!_ Your journey through the show has definitely made me want to check out season 3 in full again. Thanks (;
It is a great shame the show ended here. A fourth and final series had been planned, but it never happened because Goldcrest, the production company who had put up the greater share of the budget, ran into financial difficulties after investing in notorious film flops like Revolution and Absolute Beginners. No alternative financial backer could be found, so that was that, but Series 4 would have seen the return of Belleme and finally brought Robert and Marion together, though Marion would not have been in every episode as Judi Trott wanted her role in the show scaled down (hence why Marion enters the convent here). As it happens, I think this episode still makes for an effective wrap up to the show, even though it wasn't supposed to be. You are right that Marion comes full circle here, which feels satisfying, and I never felt that she and Robert had the same chemistry as she had with the original Robin, so it instinctively seems right to me that they don't marry - her reasons are in any case very understandable. Wolf-Robert looks a little silly in places, but overall it's a strong conclusion. By the way, I loved your recreation of the title sequence, and I am really glad you enjoyed this fine old show so much - this was a great set of reactions.
I used to know somebody who liked to follow up this series with aviewing of the film 'Robin and Marian', mainly because the older Robin is played by the older Connery, but also because of Marian's speeches about not losing Robin in both...
No more Robin of Sherwood episodes were made as in 1985, the film company, Goldcrest, took a gamble on the movie, Revolution, starring Al Pacino. It was a massive flop, losing Goldcrest almost £10 million pounds. My home town of King's Lynn, Norfolk, (UK) has the unfortunate history of being the main filming location for Revolution.
A wonderful end to the story (and hugely influential on me as a kid.) No Baron De Belleme but a great send off to Gulnar. I loved Gisburne's embrace of the wolf cult and props have to go to the Sheriff for his genuine courage. Marian's story was bittersweet but at least was chosen by her. I used to have a Robin of Sherwood costume (and plastic sword) and spent hours each day in the back yard (with our dog.) I even had a Robin Of Sherwood adventure gamebook (during the brief window when those were popular, before I discovered D&D.)
Hello again Alexa from England UK i absolutely second the previous comment i am so glad you enjoyed this brilliant series that ended far too early. Back in the day "Robin Of Sherwood" was Co-Produced by "Goldcrest Films and HTV (Harlech Television) one of 15 Separate franchises that made up the ITV Network here in the UK back then. Each of those Franchises was responsible for a Specific Region providing local programming and contributing to the then ITV Network. Unfortunately Goldcrest films went bust and HTV could not fund the series on their own as it was too expensive so Sadly Robin of Sherwood came to an abrupt end. Had this not happened im very sure there would have been a fourth series. I would be interested to know which of the Robins was your favorite? My Personal favorite was Michael Praed although i like both. I loved your video recreation of the opening titles by the way very nicely done.
I have so enjoyed watching you react to this show, especially these last two episodes, your expression😆. The ending is definitely bitter sweet. If the series had continued for another season I think we would have seen the Magna Carta and Marion would probably returned to marry Robin (because Robin Hood = Maid Marion). What you said about some things can't be mended twice really resonated with me. I think Loxley's death really pushed Marion in a direction she didn't anticipate when she was young and innocent. And becoming a nun was a good choice for women back then. I have been obsessed with this series for years. It is so rewatchable. I do hope you will rewatch it. If you like Arthurian films, have you seen Excalibur? The same actor who plays Gisburne played Mordred in it.
Two things I disliked about this epi: First, how easily Herne was defeated by the Clay Robin. I would be okay with Herne losing, but would have liked to have seen an actual fight. Would have been epic. Two, was how Marion came to her decision to become a nun in less than 24 hours. I could see her going through the stages of grief after several weeks, and than become a nun, but she seemed to come to terms with Robin's "death" way too quickly.
I do not agree but that is okay! :) for example when you join a convent, however briefly, that calling never goes away. She did not decide in 24 hours-she never fully left. None of us did.
As many people have already said Goldcrest the production company closed their tv division down after betting the farm on a number of box office flops, most notably Absolute Beginners is cited as the reason for the closure.
A wonderful series, a shame about Goldcrest though, I feel that it was a great loss to the U.K. film and TV industry. On a happier note I'm really looking forward to 'Sapphire and Steel'.
There was a lot more stories that the team had but the series ended because of commercial reasons, there are books and audio plays with further stories.
Every year the cast organise a curry night get together meet up such is the bond created by working on this wonderful series and so pleased and not surprised you have another favourite to revisit. Everything is great from the music to costumes and innovative additions such as muslim characters and mystic elements and one of few examples a series succeeded in a major cast change. The only think that stops it as you say being perfect was not enough episodes, one final series to finish it. Like B7
@cardcounter21 have thought about getting it have seen trailer and am impressed with new SFX cgi but want to see what the plans to release series 2 first done want to endup with an expensive single box
It's been a pleasure watching this series (again) w/ you. Hope you find another series I might enjoy watching on your channel. Until then, be well. See you soon. (Perhaps you'll try Robin Hood (9006-2009) series in the future).
I'd say this is a sad ending for the series but at least they did give us a conclusion of sorts and it's up to the imagination what happens to the rest of the characters. Perhaps John and Meg would tie the knot. Maybe the band of merry men would take in another member or two. One thing is for certain though, they'd all be giving the Sheriff and Gisburne plenty more trouble.
Sadly, they were not expecting to end the show here, so it would have only been a cliff-hanger. Eventually, they have done an audio story, but I have yet to get a copy to listen to
I might as well use this final opportunity to tell this. That as from 2016/7 I watched the Sheriffs best moments on TH-cam, no spoilers to fear now. I was out in the countryside quoting his best lines from that video out loud. Everybody must have thought I was mad! 🙈🤐 That Halstead nun was annoying converting Marion. Loved the Robin, clone/werewolf.🐺 Sapphire & Steel have been assigned to you, Alexa!☺☺

That"s what I was thinking but can not put it into words so eloquently.
Apparently Richard O'Brien did the fight choreography. "It's just a jump to the left. And then a step to the right ...."
