Never heard of Dream Theater, never was really into this music in the past. Now I can't stop listening to this track and even created a new playlist on Spotify 😂That's the magic of music. You think you've heard everything cool before and suddenly discover a whole new direction that just blows you away. This coming from a total techno head. Estepario's cover was so awesome, it really burned itself into my brain.... forever.
I've been into DT for 30 years or so. One of the best prog metal bands ever.
I've been aware of DT forever but never payed much attention to them until I saw them live when they co-headlined Gigantour with MegaDeth.. The music really draws you in but some people have no interest in the technical aspects. It's almost like jazz just sounds like noise for many people
Sometimes it takes a different angle to start appreciating a song or band, like a drum cover or a music video - we sometimes need some other stimuli than "simply" the music

Tbh as a drummer myself, all you need to play Dream Theater is 3 pieces like this + double pedal + and the right sets of cymbals like stacks, china, splashes, and the basics combo hi hat + crash + and ride. The downside with 3 pieces like this is that you can't replicate the crucial octobans and higher toms sounds if you're looking to sound exactly like the recording, but I guess he doesn't aim for that and straight to play with his own take and that's perfectly fine.
Your production quality has gone up so so much over the last few months. I love the new camera.

My opinion of this cover vs his old cover: This version is more perfected.
The technique is more solid and the ghost notes hold more emphasis.
In saying that, his first cover was so much better than the original version of the song that I have become incapable of hearing it any other way.
In conclusion, this cover is technically better than his first, but.. well there is no but. I really can’t decide which version I like more. Either way, they both trump the original and that is the most important thing.

Also, his right hand fulcrum has developed immensely, I thought I couldn’t get any better, he proved me wrong and I love it!
The biggest difference comes down to the single peddle vs the double, yes the single pedal forces more creativity but it was all made up for by the perfection of his technique while using the double.
You will forever remain my greatest inspiration for drumming. Thank you!
His first cover did something new for al the drummers, that was vulgar display of talent and effort, necer seen something like that, a double pedal can help you to get more precisen beats, but a dream theater song with just one pedal... I was always called weird for using that technique in the beginning where you put the stick between your index and middle fingers. Always told my classmates that I could do some rudiments faster with it. So cool to see you doing it!

Baard Kolstad of Leprous also preaches that grip! He says it can help you play faster and with more power, and he's absolutely right!

As for the camera and space; musicians gotta do their thing where they can feel what they need. The space looks good and the camera works out pretty well to give the viewer the same sense of what you’re doing in the room as well as showing us what’s in that room. Just you smashing that kit. Well done.
I wanna see El Estepario in a drum room with Mangini and Portnoy now; mostly just to see how crazy the one-uppmanship will go because holy cow this was INTENSE!!!!
For real tho, all 3 just tearing their way through their kits; the look on Mangini and Portnoy's faces when Estepario drops the weight on his snare; the reaction faces to the one handed insanity! And you know they'd all be just grinning like a buncha goofballs the whole time too!
Please God, I ask you for so little, for the betterment of humanity allow this to happen!

This makes me wonder why both Portnoy & Mangini have such complex kits when you can smash it with such a minialist setup. It's super impressive.

is just the matter of sound choice for their personal preference, for example you can't have the exact same octoban/pipe tom sound on smaller kits like this. The technique is pretty much the same tho whether you have a small kits or large kits, they can absolutely do that if they wanted to.
Dont know about Mangini but Portnoy used his kits to what i would call its full potential though. He was never as fast or technical as mangini and some other top drummers but damn did he have a feel and creativity to his playing. Il take portnoy over mangini any day. He was way more creative in adding parts that not only fit the song but also added to it. Way more interesting to listen too. He also had a groove mangini cannot compete with.

@@brizzlex1919if I may answer this, I think Estapario sacrifices too much feeling for technique, even more so than Mangini. In this cover it's quite noticable. In his single-bass cover of the same song he has to use his right hand for some of the "double bass" parts, which limits the insane fills to a, in my opinion, very enjoyable minimum.
Also, MM and MP orchestrate more on their large kits, as the other commenter pointed out.

With drum covers of DT, Tool, etc I usually prefer to see something true to the original, but for once I am happy to see something like this, adding your own magic.
