Great observation! I sorta agree with you. But the difference is her group rode it out with Ivy and Carlos. Laurie just dipped, was pretty mouthy, and resistant. Everything is process and outsiders don't get to control, at the end of the day. Even Carlos deserved a choice and I'm sure Ivy has issues also. No one is perfect. ❤

Many people experience the world differently. I have experienced the touching of my hair when I was a child and it was not pleasant. There were words like Brillo pad used and things to make me very insecure about my hair. Therefore I protect my daughter and the way people touch her hair as well. It may not be a big deal to you because you maybe have never experienced the negative side of it. I cannot judge how someone perceived it, but I understand the way she reacted.

There’s no such thing as “doing too much.” Black people are not a monolith. For some, hair touching isn’t a big deal, for others it just perpetuates people not feeling black ppl are allowed autonomy over their own hair and body. Some people think hair touching is an energy transfer. Even if it isn’t deep to you, for a lot of other black people, it is that deep. Black hair has systemic implications depending on background . And you nor anyone else get to dictate the validity of someone’s experience. Also… boundaries and consent are a thing. Touching someone’s child unprovoked (or just someone period) and expecting them not to get upset is crazy work.
I definitely don’t want to go through explaining racial epithets to non-Black people.
