    Guys DW if you had a bad exam, it happens. Science is not a result to achieve but a long way to go. Speaking from personal experience, I had some terrible exams this summer and fortunately this exam was the right one for me. Don't question your intelligence or insult yourself. Embrace your failure and carry on.

    Hi James, I would like to ask a question for those applicants who want to study Computer Science in Oxford, you mentioned that we should do questions 1,2,3,5 and 6 instead of 1,2,5,6,7. I would like to know are there any changes of the types or test points of Question 3 and 6 compared to the previous MAT papers and what about the question 7 which is a typical computer problem solving question, is it going to combine with question 6 or something? ps: Very handy videos for MAT preparation! Thank you so much for doing these livestreams!

    Just wondering for Q5 V a), is it possible to just use what we know already, that a+b+c>2c and a+b+c=2s to show c

    18:00 you wrote square root of 5 instead of 3 when for the function touching the graph (the solution is still the same, but it looks strange with sqrt(5) being smaller than 2 according to your graph).

      How do you think it went...?

    • @electrovector7212
      @electrovector7212 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@spaghettiking653 it was normal. Many people say it was hard but come on dude this was supposed to happen. I applied to Oxford Maths-CS. I got a little problem in 6.Vb and all the other problems were just like last years. Unfortunately İ didn't find multiple-choice questions well prepared. In the past years, there were beautiful problems including ideas but this year had 3 real number solution problems. Disgusting. 2 was cute but it was a well-known concept (Pell equations). 3 was a beautiful integration question compared to last years. 5 was a little bit hard at first sight but after solving step by step it was getting clearer and clearer. 6's first 4 questions were easy but I think I might have a problem on the 5th one. Anyways, how did you do?

    • @spaghettiking653
      @spaghettiking653 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@electrovector7212 Well, so far as I'm concerned, this year may well have been my worst performance of any MAT paper I've done. Regrettably, it would seem I wasn't exactly ready as I thought I was; knowing about those Pell equations, it looks like you're rather more prepared than I was :'). I made a major mistake on the question asking to find the x,y values when z=1, as I noticed you should divide the z=4 case by 4 to derive it. Unfortunately, whilst I divided the x=340 by 2 (as the 1/4 becomes 1/2 when dragged inside the square), I foolishly divided the other number by 4, by which it was not divisible, and gave up because I had no integer answer. As for Q6 and Q7, I did dreadfully, and massively failed to understand them. Overall, a tragic performance for me this year. But much luck to you, I hope you get accepted :)

    Hi James, I just had a questions regarding how admissions work, because after looking at the admission statistics for previous years, there are students who get scores in the range of 30-50 percent who get shortlisted, while there are people with 80% who don’t get shortlisted. What part of the students application usually causes this?

    • @OxfordMathematicsPlus
      @OxfordMathematicsPlus  ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Fair question. In a word; context. There are students where a score of 75 is not that impressive given what we know about their educational context (perhaps they've been at university for a year), and there are students who have faced adversity for whom 50 is an impressive result. There are also a handful of students for whom something went wrong on the day of the test - there's a special considerations process, but their score still shows up in the stats. In recent years, we've also got a handful of people with no MAT score at all due to reasons outside their control. All of that is why I'm glad we don't have a hard pass/fail mark on the MAT. ^James

    1:49:53 I'm confused by the phrasing of this question.
    It sounds to me like it's asking you to
    show that _(a,b,c)_ is a triangular triple *AND* _a+b+c = P_ (if and only if _a,b,c, < 0_ )
    (I realise now that that would obviously be impossible but I was acting under the assumption that it was true)
    However you and the markscheme treat it as meaning
    "show that _(a,b,c)_ is a triangular triple, *GIVEN THAT* _a+b+c = P_ , (if and only if _a,b,c < 0_ )"
    Why is this? Is this standard mathematical language or is it ambiguous question writing? Either way I imagine many people got stuck unable to prove it due to this misunderstanding

    Hi James, thanks for the live stream!
    I've got a nice way to solve Q2 (v)
    3^17 = 9^8.5
    4^13 = 2^26 = 8^8.66666...
    form here its pretty obvious that 3^17 is larger, is this working acceptable ?

    • @OxfordMathematicsPlus
