I tried for years to find a singing teacher for years. The teachers assumed I meant sing better. They got angry because I couldn't find the note they demanded of me. They all gave up on me. I never found one like you. That's sad. Now I can finally sing. Thank you Ken.
As a voice teacher myself, I'm sorry you had those experiences. Unfortunately anyone can call themselves a voice coach. Some people think because they can sing, they can teach. Not True.
I’ve taken voice lessons with 2 teachers and quit both of them due to a sore throat. I literally walked into their studios and started singing with no warmup or anything. I just started Ken’s course a week ago, and while I’m completely overwhelmed by the first few videos, I’ve started the instruction and immediately noticed no issues with my throat. Wow, posture and support…what a difference it makes!

I'm a member when I was 14 years old I listened to a song called This Ain't a Love Song by Bon jovi. It was a pretty good song I didn't listen to it a whole lot but I did like it. Years later over a decade later, I heard it one time from a friend of mine who was singing it but he forgot the lyrics. I was able to remember all of the lyrics inside of 10 minutes. I hadn't heard the song in over a decade, so yes Ken it is possible to retain Melody through memory!
I love that you said the mind can not go out of pitch that is so true. cause there's some really high notes in my head voice that i can do perfectly in my head and when i try to actually emulate that it doesn't happen. At least not every time. I've been trying to figure the connection between doing it in my head and actually singing it to where it becomes second nature

This is fantastic!! Many years ago I did some vocal training with Mark Baxter out of Boston (who is phenomenal) You remind me of him with your talent, insight and how incredibly you teach. Ordering your vocal repair series this weekend.. and so looking forward to the healing!! Bless😊 and Thank you!!
Ken, I absolutely love your lessons, which I find really helpful in practical ways. You are the best! Just one thing to check: regarding the undoubted pitch differential between headphones on and off, I first experienced this phenomenon when I was a teenager (I'm now 59 and I've been a professional guitarist and singer for 41 years and guitar teacher at London's Institute of Contemporary Music Performance for 31 years) and when I discussed it with a student recently, he suggested it was Doppler shift, but I believe it is not. I myself observed the pitch drop as I took my (loud) headphones off and laid them on my bed (there was no other ambient sound to be heard, only the sound of the headphones themselves). The only difference was the sound pressure level (SPL) hitting my ears. Many years ago I read a massive book on the subject of psychoacoustics and I learnt so much! To my surprise, pitch is measured in Mels, which is a product of frequency vs. loudness. (Frequency is measured in Hz or CPS and it's only the cyclical change rate over time.) The amplitude is, simply put, the loudness, and we humans perceive pitch differently according to a loudness curve. Doppler shift is, if I'm not mistaken, all to do with motion and, more to the point, relativity (varying distance) between object and observer: as a moving object (that produces a sound) approaches, we perceive a pitch...and as the moving object approaches further still, the sound waves are effectively being compressed (thereby having shorter wavelengths = increasing frequency hence perceived rising pitch); and the moment it passes in front of us we perceive the pitch, albeit briefly, as direct sound as we are momentarily aligned with the object in a lateral plane. Then, as the object moves away from us the sound waves are stretched, thereby being perceived by us as a falling in pitch. To reiterate, Doppler Shift is a motion and changing distance thing (stretching of waves independent of their amplitude), which physicists and even astrophysicists (with regard to light waves and other parts of the electromagnetic spectrum) derive calculations from (evidence of the universe expanding). By the way, my favourite astrophysicist is Dr Brian May! Consider if you will: if the object producing sound were constantly aligned in front of our ears and it moved directly away from us and its motion halted, there would be negligible Doppler Shift (no ongoing motion, hence, no sound wave compression/rarefaction, only amplitude drop), so it would merely sound ever quieter with no change in perceived pitch. To reiterate, concerning to the undoubted phenomenon of there being a perceived pitch difference with headphones on vs headphones off, I believe it's about the loudness (loud music heard in the 'phones means we tend to sing a certain way, which might not be "true pitch" - you know exactly what I'm talking about, right? Experiment by turning the headphone feed down to a relatively quiet setting and listen to some music, then take them off and hold the headphones at arms length or maybe place them a few metres away on a surface and listen again: there should be little or no perceived difference in pitch. Crank the cans once again (please avoid damaging your hearing!) and repeat the experiment and the pitch differential will return: it's about loudness affecting pitch perception (remember, pitch is, in psychoacoustic terms, measured in Mels). Anyway, that's just me being pedantic. Yours is the best and most practical advice advice out there; it actually helps us to sing better. The proof is in the singing!
Killer video ! This helped me tremendously because I felt like i could only sing with my favorite song playing in the background and i think this is exactly what i needed, all about confidence. thanks ken!
The part where you were talking about if we can sing along when somebody else is carrying our load so to speak, for example if we're listening to a song and we can match pitch... But as soon as you take the song away it all goes flat... THAT'S ME!
Great information and very helpful! I recently discovered the reason I dislike the sound of my voice, which i always considered my tone or just my instrument. Then i got Melodyne on my DAW I'm learning to record on, and discovered many notes, especially lower chest notes were 15 cents flat! To me I just didn't have the tone i want in reality i was flat and probably because, as i learned here, i tend to cover or use a darker tone in lower register. At least I know what to work on, and this really helped me understand! Btw, I am a new Ken tamplin vocal academy student and love it. Thanks Ken, for doing what you do!
Hi Ken, nice greetings from Italy! I play bass guitar and your advices are helping me to play better bass lines and really feel in my ears and in my mind the notes I play; also, your tutorials are very useful to improve my English!

Ken, the covid comments are fantastic… I subscribed the second I heard them (I live in Seattle WA for context, people round here are wild😅) , BUT… first and foremost you have excellent videos about singing and technique and really appreciate you sharing this information.
What'd you describe happened to me at the try-outs for the singing of Star Spangeled Banner for a baseball game opener. I could cover the range only if I began with the right pitch. I had to listen to someone else just before my turn and he sang the required song 3 half-steps lower than my ideal. I started out where he had sung and I couldn't cover the range. I had practiced at least 20 times over the previous week--didn't matter. What I heard just before my try-out controlled my mind.
This explains why I could always sing along with any singer and hit the notes, but wasn't able to or didn't have the confidence to sing it with just my voice and a backing track. Also I suppose that's why I seem to be able to sing better in my car lol. It's nice to have it finally explained to me in a way that makes sense! I think my problem is that I trained myself to be able to match the pitch and notes of other singers but have never been able to find "my" voice...I'm used to imitating others but have no clue what I actually sound like. The few times I recorded myself solo, I was so disappointed thinking I didn't sound good because I didn't sound EXACTLY like my favorite artists! Maybe someday I'll be able to afford your course so I can discover what I'M supposed to sound like without depending on somebody else's vocal to guide me! Thank you for the insights Ken, now I know that just because I can't sound identical to a famous singer, doesn't mean that I suck!
What about harmony Sarah? Do ya find yourself copping the Alto or Soprano, or even Tenor parts naturally when finding yourself in certain Keys where the lead line may be too low? Just curious?
@@JOHNKUHNMUSIC tbh my voice feels more comfortable in a lower range, more like a contralto I guess. I've been singing since around the age of 4 when I discovered Whitney Houston. Up until the age of about 14 I was able to belt in the style of Whitney and Mariah but it seemed like my singing voice changed after that. I switched over to singing country music and was most comfortable singing in a range similar to The Judds, Lorrie Morgan, LeAnn Rimes, etc. At the time I knew nothing about head voice, I would try to belt in what I now know is chest voice and get frustrated when I couldn't quite reach the higher notes. I want to learn how to develop head voice, how to mix chest and head, etc. If it makes sense I can match Vince Gill perfectly, but I can also match my voice to Reba McEntire. So I honestly don't know what type of voice I have. I do know that I have horrible stage fright and confidence issues. Mainly because I'm very self conscious and I'm always afraid I won't be able to hit the higher notes when I try. I think if I could learn how to work through that I'd be a great singer consistently! I have no issues with vibrato or anything like that.
Yeah Sarah, with your wide genre selection of vocal timbre's your matching it would be interesting to hear what you'd come up with if only givin gtr/player/ chords and someones raw demo to arrange. Ive been workin Kens videos going on 2 yrs now and work weekly on the head/chest mixing , diaphramatic support/ vowel mods and workin up tunes I thought were impossible 10 yrs ago so I know for SURE your in the RIGHT place to progress. If your ever around Charleston WV., hit me up, I practice out at the state pk ALOT .Be fun singin some old duets/standards.@@SweepsSlotswithSarah

The weird parts makes sense though I don’t even understand but go back and hear him again Ken I been following off and on many years This man! Is a perfect example of a Genius ! A very very intelligence man that took many years of what he learned I believe Ken had so many years of experience knowledge anything Music from guitar He is totally awesome
There is some good information here, Ken. However it would be really helpful if you would isolate the vocal exercise from the text so that we can come back to this frequently and just practice the exercises.
Also the key is avoid singing song that are not in standard keys. Some songs have their instrument tuned off standard tuning and even an auto tune cant tune those. Lol. When you practice singing in key choose song that are tuned standard. Luckily off key songs are rare.
I've started to fill in vocals and do some lead in my husband's band and they use that trick where they drop everything by 1/2 step so that they aren't destroyed by the end of the night. I will tell you thpugh, though, of the things that I have sang for decades sounded horrible. Some of them really did lose their luster by dropping a half step but also, years of singing them in one key ...
Thanks a lot for this Ken. I can kinda sing, very strange singing voice, it's neither fish or fowl, so you have your work, cut out with me. But cheers for your confidence, will keep trying.
4:00" Left your monitor on the sideline". My guess is they had a good radio wireless microphone they knew worked well with no interference between the receiver and the center of field, but the monitor was a wired and powered speaker amp. They didn't bother to pull those wires or plan enough slack in the wires to place the monitor mid field. In ear monitors would be the solution for any difficult monitor placement situation. Haven't use them myself. Even if their range isn't really stated to go as far as mid field, with the transmitter near perpendicular on the sideline and no interference they would likely work to mid field or farther. If there is a not product sold that does this a stereo transmitter with portable receiver and ear buds might be used with football field length of range. Somebody might break into the frequently, but for a private monitor that would be an irritant rather than somebody being able to commandeer the stadium PA system as with a wireless microphone. The sound people might not be comfortable with a radio system that is not protected from outside interference, but if it is clear that it is not TO the main system, but a private monitor they should be OK with it.
once again revives my singing. OK so we have a singer joining - but I still want to contribute useful harmonies and maybe the odd song. Weird, cos in studio am ok pitchwise. Live...oh god sack the guy
Singing on pitch: I’ ve seen karaoke with the words and marker following the words helping preform correct timing (beat), be nice to see the note displayed above the words to help develop, correct or guide pitch.
Hi Ken, Just watched this video. 95% of this went straight over my head, but the info I did understand is really useful. So everything that you spoke about here, is it individually covered per lesson in your course?
Thanks for the insight as always Ken! Say, I was wondering if you might cover "Mississippi Queen" by Mountain. I think that might be a good one to do? I could definitely see you rocking that one Ken!! 😀
I'm that person you can't teach pitch. Because when you were viewing who did it better and said see they were not in pitch. It all sounded the same to me. When you were doing Aaaa aaaa aaa with the guitar, I'm thinking yeah no, it just sounds loader or softer. When I hear sound I only hear higher or lower, softer or louder. Music is just noise to me. So I listen to talk radio. I hate my hearing, But I love your channel.
I am 52 and really want to improve my singing I'm not a rock star but would love to at least sound like one....lol I just don't have the volume I really struggle with getting loud but I am a beginner so I really want to improve and I am wondering if its to late to learn due to me being to old. I really love your videos and do all your exercises to help but I just cant seem to get the volume to belt anything. Any suggestions to get some volume?
Hi Ken! Love your channel! I have a question, I’m pretty sick right now with the flu, and I can barely talk let alone sing, what should I do to keep from losing what I’ve gained vocally while sick? I’ve heard drink tea with lemon and honey, and other stuff. Should I try to do scales? Thanks bro, Brian Peace
Yes, indeed a good singing teacher who brought me a good step further in just one video. I'd take private lessons right away if he'd offer some but sadly that's surely not the case.. As of pitch: I do ear training with some of my guitar students and I found that there's a few who don't even know that they're completely wrong. That would take lots of effort for them to get better and require that they develop a strong will to want to improve themselves. The same with rhythm btw I see different types of brain regions. The ones that are responsible for math is a complete other region that's responsible for music recall abilities.
hi ken i want to buy your course soon i practice daily with your videos and they have brought me a lot. I live in Berlin and wanted to know if you also send there. Kind regards
hey ken im 17 years old and trying to get better at singing but i feel like im not getting any better... i have a nasally sound and have alot of tention when reaching mid to high notes. do u have any advice and or videos that can help me become more open and clearer... a song that i have been working on for about a week now is put my head on my shoulders.
Singing along to your favorite song is like trying to color a Picasso within the lines in a coloring book. Singing along with just you and an instrument you have to paint that picture yourself.
Hey Ken! Could you do a video on screaming like Black Francis from the Pixies? I'm sure there are a lot of methods you could apply already to get the result, but I'd like to see your reaction to him as well as the way he screams now at 55 years old.

You do not suck. Keep at it!
@@kentamplin thank you Ken, I appreciate the encouraging words!
Thank you, with you I am better.
Hey Ken, what would be a few easy song suggestions that you would recommend? I'm a very amateur singer(more of a guitarist), but I have been listening to you for years and my singing has improved in a huge way. I always love your instructional videos. Thanks again man!
joe h- That's a great question for my free singing forum. It is a great community of singers, currently doing the KTVA method, chatting about all things related to voice. You can join the discussion by enrolling, it's free. Check it out!: forum.kentamplinvocalacademy.com/
Ken you are an excellent teacher! I’m learning from your videos, even the weird parts 🤣
Thanks for your tips and knowledge as always Ken
You bet!
Love your enthusiasm 💖, you're brilliant ‼️
You're the best!
I'd like you to cover timing and when to come in sign-in time tips
Hope to buy your course before the end of the yr..but went ahead a bought your repair your voice package.....while it was on sale.....
Awesome, DonaldEpperson!
Thanks a lot for this Ken. I can kinda sing, very strange singing voice, it's neither fish or fowl, so you have your work, cut out with me. But cheers for your confidence, will keep trying.
My pleasure! kentamplinvocalacademy.com/
Love you from India🇮🇳
Thanks so much for these awesome videos ❤
once again revives my singing. OK so we have a singer joining - but I still want to contribute useful harmonies and maybe the odd song. Weird, cos in studio am ok pitchwise. Live...oh god sack the guy
Great live video !!! 👍😁👍 Very cool information ken !!! Thank You!!👍😁👍
Glad you enjoyed it!
Singing on pitch: I’ ve seen karaoke with the words and marker following the words helping preform correct timing (beat), be nice to see the note displayed above the words to help develop, correct or guide pitch.
Rock on!
Hi Ken,
Just watched this video.
Great suggestion!
Love the mask reference, Ken. IYKYK... ;-)
ear traing helps also...on pian and using half tones
Thank you.
Any suggestions to get some volume?
...i love you. You're such a great teacher man lol thanks for these videos!
I’m learning a lot, amazing you 🙏❤️
Awesome! Thank you!
Hi Ken!
Love your channel!
I have a question, I’m pretty sick right now with the flu, and I can barely talk let alone sing, what should I do to keep from losing what I’ve gained vocally while sick? I’ve heard drink tea with lemon and honey, and other stuff. Should I try to do scales?
Thanks bro,
Brian Peace

Yes, indeed a good singing teacher who brought me a good step further in just one video. I'd take private lessons right away if he'd offer some but sadly that's surely not the case..
As of pitch: I do ear training with some of my guitar students and I found that there's a few who don't even know that they're completely wrong. That would take lots of effort for them to get better and require that they develop a strong will to want to improve themselves. The same with rhythm btw
I see different types of brain regions. The ones that are responsible for math is a complete other region that's responsible for music recall abilities.
I do offer private lessons. kentamplinvocalacademy.com/
HI Ken, would you consider making videos about songwriting for singer-songwriters?
I cover it in my course.
I was gifted your course in 2011. Has it changed since then?

hey ken im 17 years old and trying to get better at singing but i feel like im not getting any better... i have a nasally sound and have alot of tention when reaching mid to high notes. do u have any advice and or videos that can help me become more open and clearer... a song that i have been working on for about a week now is put my head on my shoulders.
The answer is real vocal training. Check out my course: kentamplinvocalacademy.com/
Thank you for the Tips,Advice Ken.🙏🙏
My pleasure!
Singing along to your favorite song is like trying to color a Picasso within the lines in a coloring book. Singing along with just you and an instrument you have to paint that picture yourself.
Nicely said, Jason!
Hey Ken! Could you do a video on screaming like Black Francis from the Pixies? I'm sure there are a lot of methods you could apply already to get the result, but I'd like to see your reaction to him as well as the way he screams now at 55 years old.
Good suggestion.
Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy sweet! That’d be awesome! No vocal coaches have reacted to him. He may not be as famous as Nirvana or Chris Cornell, but he and Pixies are still very iconic.
Ken I am 17 yr old baritone and I can't go above an E4 in chest .Is it normal?
Do you have any videos for bass singers?
