I think the hardest part about singing (besides that it already seems pretty difficult to explain) is that for every rule of what you should do and what you shouldn't do, there is someone else with an amazing voice telling you to do the exact opposite. This video seems to be pretty good (the guy can totally sing). but learning is super frustrating when you have five people telling you a different answer to what 2+2 equals and you haven't ever done math before and that they cant really explain how they got their answer. "The answer is 4 because you can kind of feel it down here and it flips at the top.. and that means the answer is 4." And I'm like.. ok... sure.. I don't know if I'm even feeling the same thing you are describing or how to get to that feeling or maybe I am, but that's not how I would describe it. Its just too damn ambiguous and then people argue if its even correct or not.
Rock singers use head voice, which is in between chest and falsetto. It’s not about strength; it’s about coordination and pacing yourself. The trick is to make a smooth transition between registers. But even rock singers tend to miss this. That’s why so many of them have to cancel shows due to vocal issues.
He is singing in his passaggio. AKA Mixed voice. He blends the registers together by bringing the falsetto register down to lower notes and by bringing the chest voice up into falsetto notes. He is singing in a part of his range where the chest voice is still accessible. it is not so high that he is only able to use falsetto because his chest voice doesn't reach that high. The result sounds like chest voice (rich) but is quieter and not strained. Bridging the passaggio doesnt happen over night.
This advice is right on. I used this and a couple other techniques to learn to sing Chris Cornell songs (for karaoke), but I think one thing he missed was how important warming up is. It opens the door to your range and comfort.
I've had a lot of problem developing my voice, and this is hands down the best teacher i've tried. It gives you so much more control over your voice if you don't belt so hard. It's all about the amount of work you have to do that will determine how long your voice will last. Pretty obvious stuff, but many ignores this fact.
Thank you for this! I've been doing my high notes all wrong cuz of I always thought I had to belt to hit them, but singing softer makes high notes that much easier, and they still sound good!
This is an amazing singing lesson. Very powerful yet under 4 minutes. 4 short minutes of infinite value. executed with grace. Now that's an artist and a talent/intellect. Thank you.
Amazing. This video has helped me so much. I'm a natural baritone and just assumed it would be impossible for me to hit these types of notes, but after practicing I can. It might not sound good, but I can do it. haha
I've been screaming my lungs out to reach notes between F#4 and A#4 cause otherwise I just can't hit them, but this is exactly what I needed. You know sometimes I find myself hitting those notes effortlesly but with VEEERY low volume, maybe with practice I can match it up with the distorted screaming lol
Nice video, but there are so many vocal coaches, trying to sell their programms... what I really would like to hear is a full performance of you, to hear the full quality of your voice :-)
And what would that prove? He's not doing this to impress you or anyone else with his vocal performance. He's a vocal teacher. That's what he's doing &, evidently, he's very successful. BTW, where's your next sold out performance?
guess thats pretty much whats he's been doing, with much control and more than enough muscles behind it. Belting notes way over his bridge with massive twang. But thats only my guess; im a total amateur haha.
Just the tips he gave here are going to help me a lot, since that's exactly what I do -- try to belt it out rather than relax and sing a little softer. Thanks Per!
ohh thank you so much sir. i was looking for this things, now i know the difference between falsetto and head voice.. thank you very much im from indonesia and sorry for my english 🙏
I really want more range and to have no limitation. I like going all over the place with my voice an I can sing pretty high but I do not think I can sing super high. I will working on that thanks or the tip! I really want to get your cd series because I really believe it will help me be the professional singer that I wat to be.
This is very yes way to rockin high pitch and very useful especially for older rocking guys . I see even some old famous rockstars do not follow this way and having problems to sing their songs they which have been singing for decades.
'Head voice' is similar to falsetto range. and more intense, but different from chest voice. Falsetto is 'Bridge Over Troubled Water,' a soft breathy quality. Head voice is "Run To The Hills" in the chorus.
That makes sense, I saw the lead singer from Foreigner on a chat show once, he sat at a piano and when he sang instead of belting out the song as I imagined he would he sat there and it just came out of him with such force that the host said, that's my problem, I am not singing with enough power. Clearly he had impeccable muscle control.
Why didn't my voice teachers explain it like this! Damn! All that wasted time and effort steering me away from my music and towards the crappy show tunes they liked!
Nice Hint! I'm desperately trying to hit highs with power and I'll definitely give it a try. I'm more into screaming but it's the same there: You can scream at comparably low volumes. It actually sounds to me like that high pitch singing with some grit presented here is closely related to fry singing / screaming if you'd put on more pressure on the diaphragm and let the tone stand back a little bit more.
He is singing the"softer version" in a different placement than the 'belted , loud sound". It is actually not less loud just differently placed, which he is demonstrating, but not explaining. One is on the throat the other,"softer " is in the resonator, very forward.
This is one thing all singers should learn that merely singing more loudly doesn't equal to more intensity or passion. You should be able to sing pianissimo with just as much passion as you do at fortissimo. Listen to the middle movements of Carmina Burana, the Taverna section especially or Chichester and even works like Mirjams Segesgesang, all have sections that require passion and intensity but must be sung very softly.
When you go for it you sound like Chris Cornell. Awesome stuff dude. Has made me feel like it's possible as I can find that soft mix but can't find the umph behind it yet. If it's just a matter of building muscle up then I'll keep at it. I've been thinking I was missing a bit :/
mister, can you give me a tip? been vocalizing everyday for 10 yrs now.. i also do distortions, did not damage my voice... what i dont learn is the way you did distortion, on a low volume voice.. can you give me things i need to do? when i do rasp voice, i do it on my mix or head voice because my chords are in more relaxed state.. and i had more air pressure, and activate my vocal fry... but yeah, it is loud.. the distortion that you did, it is so awesome.. your guidance please! :)
I always sing like this to my favorite songs which are still to high for me.. And it's really helping me also for my mixed voice, I have the problem, my chest voice isnt nearly as strong as my really heavy head voice... so I can hit an A5 or B5 easily but struggle with everything between f5 and A4/B4
you could try doing black metal vocals. these are easier than death metal and they are high pitched shrieks that sound badass. look them up, if at first you dont succeed, keep trying. it took me ages to learn
Thanks a bunch for these extremely helpful videos Per Bristow. You've mentioned developing muscles as a means to really high singing. Do vocal type like baritone for example restrict singing for example like Axl Rose?
Which muscles should I strengthen to work on this? It was mentioned, but wasn't specified. The content on this video is something I love to work on and I want to do as much as I can to improve

All thats in my head is "Remeaember yesterday"...

OMG. his head voice is perfection.
That's actually his mix

Saw this video when I was 14--I'm 19 now and these techniques helped me develop my mix voice in a big way!
Thank you for this! I've been doing my high notes all wrong cuz of I always thought I had to belt to hit them, but singing softer makes high notes that much easier, and they still sound good!
This guy is so good. Sounds even better than the studio version!
This is an amazing singing lesson. Very powerful yet under 4 minutes. 4 short minutes of infinite value. executed with grace. Now that's an artist and a talent/intellect. Thank you.
Just goes to show there are some amazing singers out there people have never heard of. He sings flawlessly.
amazing! I didn't think you can sing high note like this because your voice sound like low and warm.
+Thomc Some of the greatest at singing high like this have very deep voices.
***** No, I was talking people like Rob Halford. ;)
Stonewall380 Entertainment yeah, like Axl Rose, his speaking voice is sooo deep
He is a Vocal Coach. Of course he can.
Amazing. This video has helped me so much. I'm a natural baritone and just assumed it would be impossible for me to hit these types of notes, but after practicing I can. It might not sound good, but I can do it. haha
Thank you ! You just taught me Something I never Knew ! I'm gonna be The Greatest Singer Since Elvis ! !
Kurt Snyder you can do it
Elvis?? hahaha
Corey Taylor is the best singer there ever was or ever could be
Caleb Willeby HAHAHAHA
Fr4nc15c0 B4rr05 Is that hahahaha meaning Corey Taylor sucks or hahahaha meaning that he is good
You're the best vocal coach on YT thanks for this video I would buy any training DVD'S or downloads from him any day
+ISRAEL R then do buy it. it will change your life
I suddenly feel this urge to not forget what happened the day before.
One of the eye opener explanation for me.Thanks
I always keep coming back to watch this video :)
Thank you again for posting this. I use it all the time to hear how to hit high notes in a relaxed way.
This explains Steven Tyler's scream on "Dream On"....very effective technique.
Also " Cryin' ".. it is much easier to sing high notes in head/mixed register than chest.. that is exactly what Steven Tyler does in this song.
best lesson I heard on Line.
Would you start working out by trying to bench 250 lbs? Then don't expect to sing high and loud right away, either.
Thanks Bristow, I brought some DVDs a while ago and has really helped my voice...I sing in church while playing the Piano...God Bless
Freddie Mercury 2:25
Awesome.

1:18 sounded like Chris Cornell lol
And Axil Rose
guess thats pretty much whats he's been doing, with much control and more than enough muscles behind it. Belting notes way over his bridge with massive twang. But thats only my guess; im a total amateur haha.
Clear and concise, thank you from Maine.
I just sing rock today and sounds just like without yelling and straining my throat. Thanks, Per!
Amazing control!
Wow! I think I found a good coach on how to sing rock song without straine! It's helps me a lot thank you.
Damn, where are you now senseii? Please continue your youtube channel
Just the tips he gave here are going to help me a lot, since that's exactly what I do -- try to belt it out rather than relax and sing a little softer. Thanks Per!
Best rock coach I've seen.
ohh thank you so much sir.

Right on. I used to scream like crazy got hoarse every show. I can be way cooler now and get more edge thanks to you.
This is the best tip I have seen in all of youtube on this topic.. Dang.. You can sing.. What amazing control!!!
Which muscles are we targeting and how do we tareget these muscles? this is the 1st video that has actually given practical advice, thank you.
Awesome! I'll be getting your program shortly. I'm Really looking forward to it!
Why didn't my voice teachers explain it like this!
Damn! All that wasted time and effort steering me away from my music and towards the crappy show tunes they liked!
Music teachers almost always bias towards what they like, regardless of what the student likes. It sucks but that's just how it is. :(
That's your fault for sticking with a teacher of the wrong style really...
Great Tip! Give us more video lessons please! Especialy about Rock Vocals! Please!!!
Nice Hint! I'm desperately trying to hit highs with power and I'll definitely give it a try. I'm more into screaming but it's the same there: You can scream at comparably low volumes. I saw this ages and it really helped. Watching again now and realising how much haha. Awesome. Thanks!
your technique is so amazing :)
OMG what a great vocal command! thank you!!
This is actually the best tip I could find on the internet for this topic. Thanks :)
This was awesome!
good tips, especially the but about singing softer to get more edge. I have found that is sometimes a necessity.
You're great Per !! Those high notes most of the Rock Singers they scream instead to sing thru their voice box... thank God I'm not a singer hehehe
this is what I'm looking for !! thankssss a lot!
i get what i need after watching this video .. thanks best lesson ..

I loveeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee you Per!! you SAVED my life!!! ;D and I love your program a lot. Thanks god I found you program.
You hit the nail on the head! Thanks
He is singing the"softer version" in a different placement than the 'belted , loud sound".
It is actually not less loud just differently placed, which he is demonstrating, but not explaining. One is on the throat the other,"softer " is in the resonator, very forward.
The singing is very minimal but You greatly show the what is falsetto and what is not :)
thank you going to learn to sing the highest pitch with the softest tone
Thanks for creating the video. This is amazing
He sounds like Charlie Kelley singing Nightman haha. Seems to know his stuff though.
And i want to know now how to scream like a rock singers, but healthily
Thank you Per, your advice really helps. At my age I have good range...but need to control the highs better.

I always sing like this to my favorite songs which are still to high for me.. Hi, I'm a girl I sing in an alto voice, I'd like to be able to sing rock music ... any tips.. guidence?
Me too, I'm also an alto, and these tips helped me a lot, although I'm a female. ^_^
You have an advatange, just train hard you'll hit those high notes
you could try doing black metal vocals. these are easier than death metal and they are high pitched shrieks that sound badass. look them up, if at first you dont succeed, keep trying. it took me ages to learn
THANK YOU!!! 😢
Really good actual example
the best tip of all thank you so much.
you are a great and funny teacher, definitely subscribed!
1:53 my favourite part.
Buen maestro gracias Tanks god blessyou
Thanks a bunch for these extremely helpful videos Per Bristow. You've mentioned developing muscles as a means to really high singing. Do vocal type like baritone for example restrict singing for example like Axl Rose?
Axle rose has 5+ octaves so he's off limits to most people lol
Which muscles should I strengthen to work on this? It was mentioned, but wasn't specified. The content on this video is something I love to work on and I want to do as much as I can to improve
Thank you very much ! You gave me some ideas !
thankyou!! helped alot!
very good tutorial
That's like the mot laid back distortion I have ever seen!!! Are u for real!
you are incredible!!!!! how can you do the distortion?? This is something I didn't get so far.. :) I'd like to sing those rock highs too haha :D
