Not to sounds snobby but this is like reading Ulysses by James Joyce and saying it isn’t literature or looking at Picasso’s Guernica and saying it’s not art, watching a David Lynch film and saying that there’s no way anyone in this world is actually enjoying his movies and rewatching them. This whole review feels like an 8 year old kid saying that all alcoholic drinks taste like piss, of course they do to you, you have the tastebuds of a kid. I’m not saying that you have to have a PhD in music to enjoy Björk but to not considering it music shows how shallow your definition of music is

I was actually surprised by the reaction cause I think Ovule is very easy to digest - you would rather need a PhD to appreciate Biophilia or Utopia. And this one has a dancy beat, nice bass, and it sounds like a mash-up of hymn, ballad and reggaeton to me.
And isn't the video by Nick Knight? He has also been popular for many years - so the visuals aren't as artsy and disturbing as Losss for example.

I could barely hear you on your high horse. But I stand by what I say, this isn't music. You could pull out the dictionary and yes I'll concede that this is music based on the definition. Doesn't make it any better. Comparing it to beer doesn't help...just because I have to listen to this multiple times ( or other similar genre) until I gain an acquired taste doesn't inherently make this good music. I never said it wasn't art, I gave it credit for what I think it is, but ultimately to me it isn't music. You're right I don't need a PhD and I believe I don't need any musical education (which I happen to have) but in the end it isn't good music. I know you and most people want the confirmation bias but in the end my opinion is my opinion. This isn't music. I'm. It not trying to convince you or anyone else. But being unique doesn't inherently make music good.

It's okay not to like it, find it confusing, funny, etc.
but I think it's interesting to get out of the comfort zone and understand, there are 7 billion people in the world, the meaning of music goes far beyond the perception of one, two or ten thousand people, musical taste is shaped and studied in several areas of the human psyche, is much more complex than: there's no beat, it's not music.
In the niche of experimental music, bjork is not even close to being the most.
and yes i have been listening to ovule on repeat since it came out lol, i really liked it more than atopos, the things i take into consideration to like this song so much is first: i like the artist, second: the lyrics i can connect enough to hear it on repeat, i also find the beat appealing.
You are under no obligation to understand musical theory concepts or the human psyche, but for ME again it's always nice to step out of the comfort zone, I hope to see more reactions from you from bjork or other experimental avant gard artists or any niche sub-genre

I've been a die hard Bjork fan since the early 90's, and I adore her music. I think your critique is honest and fair, I actually agree. I like it, but her newer stuff is definitely a more acquired taste. Her earlier stuff was more melodic, she sung at a slightly quicker pace, and she used to hit higher notes prior to a throat surgery she had. I'm confident you'd like her earlier efforts 👌

I think the problem is not with Björk's music (because it is objectively music - I say it as someone who has studied music for more than 20 years and occasionally worked as a teacher), the problem is that to you, music seems to be your own specific traditional pop or rock thing. You repeatedly say that you are waiting for the music to kick in, but the music has started a long time before already. Your mind is just refusing to listen, because evidently you're expecting to listen to something that you are already used to. The world of music is broader than what you think. This song defies the boundaries of tradition, but from a compositional point of view, it doesn't come out of nowhere. There's quite a lot of history behind Björk's music. I'll just give you an example, have you ever heard of minimalism? Björk is a big fan of Arvo Pärt, a modern music composer who came around before her. That's just one of her influences, cause she has many more. To be clear, I'm not saying that you must like Björk's music or that you must listen to more of her songs, but to step out of your own comfort zone, that might be good for you, and shave away a tiny bit of ignorance.

  • @mrjoshuads

Shes interpreting her definition of love within 2 spheres in a meditative aspect. The reason why I find Bjork fascinating is because she blows our perception of what music is and makes it subjective to the listener. I guess anti pop?

I think what you mean is, it's not POP music. There's a lot happening in music outside of pop and Björk kind of brings it into the pop context.
I find the song enjoyable, it's abstract and surreal, dreamy, melancholic. You have to FEEL it, enjoy the lyrics. It's focused on the lyrics, like vocal folk music with some added bits IMO. But yes, it's more like audio-visual poetry, or, multimedia art. And I love going to multimedia art exhibitions...

  • @zwarber

I think part of why you’re (so funnily) struggling with this is because it’s a quite sudden change for you. There are much more “difficult” songs of hers out there compared both to Atopos and Ovule, and to counter what you were saying towards the end, I can definitely assure you there are people out there listening to this on repeat, myself included. What I’m trying to convey here is… well, let’s say that all you’ve always known in your life artistically is the Mona Lisa, and suddenly you’re shown a piece by Kandinskij. That’ll confuse the heck out of you, and quite naturally you’d be like what am I watching, these are just messy geometrical scrubbles, where’s the painting? So thing is the music’s right there, it’s just that you’ve not built an ear for it yet. It takes some effort and some getting used to, since there’s a structure even to chaos. She’s challenging everything you know about music and everything you think it should be. Growing up I thought music was just something that has to make want to move or words I can sing or that should immediately resonate to me at an emotional level, but music can be much more than that. It can take you places or make you think about something, or even just be of some company, evoke a certain kind of indefinite feeling. It doesn’t necessarily has to “make sense” right away, but you can sit with it and give it a sense of your own, as so often happens with art in general. Try reading the lyrics to this and listening to it a couple more times, and see if you can decrypt it. If you’re still in a wtf kind of mental state, well then, that’s fine! It may help going back to some of her more somber stuff, but we definitely don’t have to like everything in life.

Perfect explanation! She’s made a colorful palate but quite obviously trying to push boundaries with her music, I’m so used to this that it’s harder for me to listen to more normal music since it’s so generic to me, like the Mona Lisa, I can appreciate it but it’ll never be like a Kandinsky or a Modigliani

I appreciate your reaction, I am a fan for sure! Björk and her works are of course different. She never really goes ‘pop’,
I think that that, in itself makes her music so much more alluring. Abstract rythyms, beats , and melodies -bend your ears to listen deeper. Her lyrics also funnel your brain to absorb them also.
It is really about emotives, fragilities, and always humaness. Life is never in 4/4 time(at least for any stretch of time) and she conveys that reality!!
I think if you give it a few more listens you will find a real structure that you may not have picked up the first time.
Music like, art is so abject to the reciever. Some get it and enjoy , some don’t get it at all so it is really in the eye/ear of the beholder!! Cheers!

And it's very funny that I really loved Atopos but I don't listen to it in repeat mode but I have done that with this song.
Of course Björk is not everyone's cup of tea but I'd recommend something: just listen to the music. No music videos. No lyrics. Just the music, at home, alone. As a huge fan of Björk over the last twenty-four years, the first listening is always the same: WHAT IS THIS?? The second one is like 'ok, good for you' but there's something different... And it's only with the third time that you begin to find and listen to all of the nuances and details. Don't think that much. Feel. Those chorus' voices, those epic-like trumpets. Doesn't this song feel like... hope?
As a fan of Björk I deeply appreciate your honest reaction because one of the things I hate the most is when someone goes "oh yes, love her!" trying to look cool. Some others just try to look cool by doing the opposite thing, too. Thanks!

Uhm maybe cause am a fan of hers and I like weird sounding music and no offense when I say this but it kinda rubbed me off the wrong way when u kept saying:”I’m still waiting for the music to start.” Where is me who is like:”the…the music IS starting what is is he talking about??” I get that it’s your opinion and you can say such things but I had to be honest towards how I felt about the comment. Anyways I get it, this is like my 8th time hearing it and honestly it’s the lyrics the lyrics to me feel like she scattered them after mixing it in a blender I have a hard time understanding certain parts cause the way that lyrics are formed it sounds random chaotic which I like at the same time as I am iffy about it, im aware she talks of love and the formation structure of a ovule seed that comes from a flower but other than that’s all I can really go off if we’re talking lyrically but I would call it music cos I have listened to a lot of different genres of music these past few months and even tho it’s odd at times there’s still a melody yk?
Now obviously what pulled me to this song was the beats and trumpets i LOVE weird sound music cause it sound’s unique and not from this world I heavily njoyed it if you put in your way that “you don’t understand it” or “by definition this is not music.” Cause this song goes against what you normally would listen to and that fine It’s just and I’m sure many others like you even said like and enjoy music like this it probably would’ve made more since ur album on Apple Music said electronic/alternative as a genre label cause that’s what it felt like to me
Lastly at the end you said how this could be rather labeled as a “cinematic audio journey” and honestly I can agree with that too but then you go:”I see anyone saying that ovule is my favorite song.” To the majority yeah ig but not if yk her long enough and been a fan of her music tho I like ovule even tho understanding may be difficult for me rn but there’s an easy fix for that just keep listening to it til I do get it and she’s not the only I do that I do that for plenty of other artist too like when I listened to toro y moi’s blessa
