She is a magical elf...Unique vocalist, in that while she has a high degree of technical ability, she never hesitates to let her voice crack or slide or do anything she wants, if she feels that...

Bjork is in a universe of herself, she is out of this world. I love how she is just herself and doesn't care about what the mass thinks! Go Bjork, you be you, you are very good at it!!

I'm just always impressed when a reactor watches Bjork and doesn't weep and sob openly, I don't really understand how they do it, but impressed for sure. I also love how Bjork has the choir behind her and she's like "stfu for Joga".

The more avant-garde side of Björk can definitely be an aquired taste. I would recommend starting with her earlier work as I think it's the most accessible, and it gets more 'weird' as time goes on. The tracks Human Behaviour, Army of Me and Hyperballad are some fun electronic bops from her first two albums.
Before her solo career she was also in a band called The Sugarcubes. The track Birthday was a pretty big hit and has more of a post-punk sound.
Anyway, her influence on particularly the nordic music scene is pretty massive. For instance she has this type of nasally growl (that she does on Birthday as well) that I lately hear many nordic singers doing. Maria Franz from Heilung being one of them.

I totally understand the slight disconnect , especially because this is a Live rendition (in London if not mistaken) that's not following the actual original album format (Homogenic 1997). The song has been slowed down by half a beat or so & this album is where Classical meets Electronica /Industrial & Merge into Harmonic Sonic Soundscape. I'd highly recommend listening to the Album Track, if you're ever inclined to do so.
She was actually a Child prodigy in Classical Music and knows many instruments. She writes, arranges, Composes , produces the Vast majority of her work.

This was the concert closer from the Bjork Live from The Royal Opera House release from 2001. It was on TV one day and having heard good things about Bjork and having seen a couple of Sugarcubes videos on MTV I thought I'd check it out. It kept my interest, but the encore "It's In Our Hands" was the one that really grabbed me, at the moment. Many of the songs from the show became grabbers after diving in deeper and getting to know Bjork and understand what a singular artist she is. Sure, not everyone is going to love her, but man, don't not give it a try. There's so much to gain and so little to lose.

She has always had a great voice and a style of singing that is all her own. I personally have never really listened to her stuff on a regular basis but it's not because I don't like her,it's just not happened but she has been popular for decades and that is for a reason.

She started with the 'Sugar Cubes' when she was 13, I believe. Began her solo career and leans more on electronics. For this live album 'Vespertine' she build herself a musical box and wrote the entry suite for an entire orchestra. You can check it out on YT. She's a mad genius😊!

Thank you for the reaction! Björk’s tendency to sing ahead of the beat intentionally creates tension in the piece. While this departure from typical musical conventions can be disorienting or challenging to follow, it’s precisely what makes her artistry unique. Notably, this version omits Matmos’ staggering bass beats, which could have balanced the track’s unconventional timing. Opinions on Björk’s style are polarized-you either love it or find it challenging. Personally, it grew on me over time.

    ok, here we go.
first of all, great artist - but the wrong song for a first impression.
björk started writing songs at the age of six and had a self titled debut album at the age of eleven - she hated it, because the songs were not hers and she promised to never play anything but her own material again.
in her teenage-times she played at several punk combos - you can watch the documentary "rokk í reykjavík" for more details on this.
later she was member of the sugarcubes with first internation success and after a time she started to walk on solo paths.
she has always been ahead of time in many ways.
she is not only the most famous icelander, she has become synonymous for iceland, she put iceland onto the world map of music and has awarded a honorary citizenship this year.
she also played in a couple of movies and series, like the juniper tree, drawing restraint 9, dancer in the dark, the northmen.
she was rewarded as best actress in cannes in 2000 for her role selma in lars von triers musical drama dancer in the dark and i die always a little bit when i rewatch this movie and especially her death scene.
the soundtrack for this movie is "selmas songs" and it's oh so good. the track "i've seen it all" with thom yorke is one of my all time favourit songs on earth.
the track you picked is from her third studio album "homogenic" (an absolut phenomenal album!) but you picked it from the royal opera house in london, and this was a bonus track.
the concert is fantastic, but also different from her other concerts.
for a first impression i would reccomend ( and i'm pretty sure i already did ) either one of her music video masterpieces like all is full of love, wanderlust or who is it, or something from her live show in paris, like bachelorette.
all is full of love was directed by chris cunningham in 1997 and is named amongst the best music videos of all times, for a good reason. it was a milestone in music video production.
wanderlust was produced in stop motion technique and is mindblowing creative.
who is it is an ecclectic piece filmed at the black beach in iceland. taken from the album "medulla", which is an a cappella/beatboxing album and is featured by many famous musicians like mike patton.
björk is not only one of the top artists of our time, she is also a universe herself. if you go down this rabbit hole, the journey will be a long one.

I don't think that this version's strings are recorded very well, they're extremely shrill. Check out this live version for a much better synergy with Bjork's voice. That 1st chair Viola also played on the studio version and has performed with Bjork many, many times through the years. @@soleywolfgangsdottir there are recordings of nearly every live event ever held on the planet in the last two decades that show up on youtube. yes, there's bands that keep up their energy. stop making sense had the band and all the backup doing aerobics for the whole concert, while singing and playing instruments. NOBODY keeps that up forever, everyone gets old, but seeing a live performance that keeps it up is kinda rare... like, there's a classical piece that stretches into 14 hours or so, people travel round the world to attend performances, so, someone has the energy...
