Love to see people come to bjork with open ears and eyes. Some people say she's "weird for the sake of weird". She's very much not. Her work is complex and heart felt. You can tell she's having a blast in this music video. Can't wait to see you react to more of her videos as they're released from the new album, Justin!
I agree. There is a great wee documentary on TH-cam "Björk: Making of Homogenic". It's a great insight into her process. as she was trying to move from musical influences to creating something completely new and unique.
Man, i love Black, Thrash, Death, Hardcore Punk, Shoegaze, Dreampop and also Country Music and i love Bjork music. She's the greatest artist of all times.
But the thing is, she knows exactly what she is doing. From every single note to every vocal. She can arrange six clarinets, a choir of 20 people or the sound of feet in the snow.
FINALLY! someone understands that Bjork isn't just someone trying to be weird. She's a true artist with multiple layers to her work that aren't obvious at first glance. I hope you react to her album when it comes out!

There's a reason Björk's videos have played in museums. Her music is as experimental as it gets among pop artists. There's stuff out there that's more abstract or freeform, but she manages to do it while still writing in catchy hooks and big movements. If you want something more rainbow flavored Giger-ish, Björk's "tabula rasa" is a trip.
I didn't understand at first. The more I have listened and watched the more I am obsessed. It's amazing!! She is an avante-garde queen. The video is like a fungal rave and I'm IN. It's about focussing on the parts between us as people that make us connect, like a symbiosis. Focussing on perfection from others blocks connection. Etc. That's what I hear. I also hear it in the music, the conflicting sounds highlighting the focus on our differences...but in the final minute it all comes together and 'connects' into the fungal rave. As though the fun is in connection. That's what I see and hear anyway! Also fungi can be both parasitic and can live symbiotically...a visual metaphor for connection/lack of.
For me bjorks music has always been that way, at first i didn't reallt get it therefore i can't really decide wether i like it or not, but the more i listen to it, and the more i slowly begin to understand and process it, and eventually i'd become obsessed with it
If you listen to Alban Berg’s influential opera ‘Lulu’ from the 1930s, you’ll hear a lot of similarities in harmony and in the very direct use of voice and instruments. Bjork has arrived at her own harmonic landscape by very different means, but she’s in great company. As for the visuals, this is not so strange if you’ve spent time looking at contemporary dance and costume design. Remember those wild costumes that were made for Bowie by a Japanese designer in the early 70s?

Anybody in the comments seen Bjork perform live? I have and it was in the mid 90s so quite early in her career. She was amazing and I would love to see her again.
I saw her in 2019 at The Shed in New York. I was incredibly lucky as I found out about the concert early enough to find affordable tix. It was not my favorite album and instrumentation from her, but the show was still breathtaking, especially "Future Forever" with the choir. Unfortunately I couldn't make it to her "Orkestral" show, I only watched the stream but that totally knocked my socks off, listening to "Aurora" with an orchestra❤
Man she’s such a cool sorceress 🧙🏼♀️ Mold represents memories. The tree is the tree of life. We have to heal our memories and how we feel about them to be able to connect to others again. Also mold represents the wisdom we have forgotten across time. I haven’t even watched this yet. But she’s awesome and deep and wild. I love her 😍
This is not all that true. She has used a wide range of modalities in her music. Even “Possibly Maybe” goes from Lydian to melodic minor and back. She does like Lydian & modal suspensions though, as well as emphasis of the upper so-called phantom note (sharpening leading note), which is the #4 in Lydian… “Jóga” uses Phrygian in the verse and Aeolian harmony under major melodies in the chorus. “Bachelorette” uses suspended harmonic movement in a harmonic minor context. “Big Time Sensuality” is in Mixolydian. “Stonemilker” has some Lydian flairs, but kind of vacillates between the three major modes on different but very closely related tonal centers. “Crystalline” is in Aeolian, though that upper phantom note is emphasized throughout, and the melody has that wayward feel she loves, with the refrain more final sounding. She often evades the root of the tonic, gallivanting through and/or past it.
@@gillianomotoso328 thanks for the affirmation that she often uses Lydian. The use of “usually” is the hint that she knows and uses other scales and modes. Her go to is Lydian mostly.
Thanks for picking something so not mainstream. I love the Sugar cubes, but the way she continues to experiment and evolve is fun to watch and listen to. Any chance you'd do Wildman Fischer or Lucia Pamela? Talk about weird.... ps. I will always refer to bass clarinets as clarobophones from now on
Bass Clarinets Bjork is Posting on TH-cam channel little bits of detail about this song! It's describe by Pitchfork as a Mushrooms Ravey thing. I LOVE it though. Wow I am so glad I found your Channel Justin! I saw the Darkness in New Orleans way back when I think I got your autograph and May still have it somewhere :)
Justin hello, after all of the recent talk of veteran singers struggling on stage, I would love to see a video from you looking at one great example of the opposite: Paul Rodgers. I came across a recent performance on TH-cam and his voice is still incredible now he’s in his 70’s. Cheers, keep up the great content!
Rick Beato gave you a shout out a couple of days ago - he said he’s up for a collab youtube video/interview. I’m sure we’d all love to see this - get on it!
This latest album by Björk is fantastic. The ode to her mother is emotional and awe-inspiring. Björk has my greatest respect for continuing to push what is musically acceptable while remaining somewhat mainstream. I cannot think of anyone as famous as her that has managed to remain so experimental.
She has definitely remained experimental but for me who loved her albums up to and including Medulla, her music is just too esoteric for me now. I admire her refusal to ever compromise creativity though :)
Your videos entertain the fuck out of me. Only thing; tv, computer, film, pinhole camera, whatever, that I watch on any kind of regular basis. And what I especially love is that for those of us with ADD, it’s just long enough…goddamn you are so fucking entertaining. Keep up the good work.
I love this song. My favourite artist David Sylvian led me to the more avantgarde music. His Manafon is one of my favourites, and I love how Björk seems to have the same approach to «pop» music. Break it down, shuffle it around, and build it up with broken pieces. The vocals could be from Debut, however. Quite catchy. Edit: I had a minor crush on Anita from 2Unlimited while I served in the army. This brought out some memories, haha.
As a musician what I love about this channel is your analysis of music, but also the intelligence of the comments. A true music appreciation society in digital form. Thank you 🙏 P.S I’m a massive (slightly obsessive) AC/DC fan, but really like Björk. Akin to watching a Picasso come to life.
It's like a melding of the Utopia and Biophilia eras of her career with a dash of gabber. Love her but it's not wierd at all for her at this stage, fairly logical progression to what she's been up to since Vulnicura.
Just to say Justin, you are THE MAN right now. I saw the Rick Beato show and he means it. I also saw you flash up on the Channel 33 rpm, so grab the opportunities as they come up. Well done,
I spend most of my time here on you tube discovering Björk...i am 49, never really attracted to her music and being...but NOW i am ready for the depth of her art.❤
I love Bjork. When she appeared with the Sugarcubes there was something uniquely different about her. Some times her music can be a bit too dark yet others have a level of joy that is very special. Her voice live is really something else. Can't recommend seeing her live enough, the production quality she delivers is always killer. I can understand though why some people would find her just confusing.
I didn't want to go to her concert in 2003 but my friends were all going. ended up being top of my all time list of live shows. she has to be seen live if you like live music. it's something special.
My coworkers tease me endlessly about my love of Bjork. :P Tho, tbh....her later stuff IS harder to get into. The sweet spot for me is Homogenic, Vespertine, and Medulla. Those albums...her 3rd, 4th, and 5th are back to back brilliant. Honestly, all her stuff is amazing. But a lot of the newer stuff takes time to get. And even then....much of it I just cannot get into. As creatively wild as her music always is....I do also miss the songwriting craft and succinct purposefulness of her older material.
Even though I am a bass clarinettist, I plan to become a mushroom person and call my instrument a clariobophone. Thanks for your fabulous channel, Justin. You have an ear most would kill for. 👂 Keep them coming (take that how you wish)
I just gotta say that THIS was the first vid I saw of yours. I have that Björk video on REPEAT, and I do love seeing people react to it/her- and TH-cam knew this video was a good recommendation. THEN I REALIZED YOU ARE THE DARKNESS FRONTMAN WHAT (apologies for not knowing your beautiful name) but I do love you. Thank you for being iconic. Iconic formative androgynous catsuit representation was something I needed when I was 12 and thanks for it!
I think if you're familiar with the work of composers like Schoenberg, Berg, Webern, Stockhausen, Ligeti, Penderecki, Gubaidulina, or jazz people like Ornette Coleman, et al, her stuff is very listenable. The costumes are cool though.
I actually laughed at this one "i'l try to figure out one chord. Sorry, it's a D, i chose the easiest". Couldn't think of a better person to talk about a Bjork song then Justin, the dude just loves music and it's contagious. Love your vids man, cheers.
I was hoping that Justin could explain Bjork but alas, she remains a mystery to me. Perhaps that's the point. Thanks to Justin for your articulation of her art/music.
Bjork has really embraced atonal chanty and slightly chaotic music for a few albums now. I love the experimental nature - as well as the bass clarinet textures throughout - but the one slight disappointment is that her vocal chants have become quite samey from album to album, often confined to three notes and very typical inverval jumps (as you pointed out early on in the video). It's not that I want her necessarily to re-embrace vocal melody - I'd just like to hear some different intervals and notes once in a while.
Justin. What will it take? What cataclysmic event? What massive shift in the polar ice caps? What flaming meteor hurting towards us from space will it take for you to get a guitar stand? That chair is now your clothesline/eyeglass holder/guitar cradler. ENOUGH I SAY!
I think it would be really awesome if you looked over a song called RA by Gaupa. I’m hooked on this band atm and I think you’d be able to break it down beautifully as always :) x
I love the new Bjork song too! Your analysis of it was great and really made me chuckle 😆. Something about "hybrid wind music" really REALLY made me giggle - it's an accurate way to describe it but hearing those words together sounded absurd! Ahh she's one of a kind our Bjork xx
Thank you, once again Justin for your unique, thought provoking analysis of musical composition. And for your ablility to reach in and grab the giggles out of me. Bjork is a musically eclectic, elfin genius and this one was a really difficult one to break down. So kudos to you! Keep up the Dad jokes, cause we love em!

Unfortunately I couldn't make it to her "Orkestral" show, I only watched the stream but that totally knocked my socks off, listening to "Aurora" with an orchestra❤
@@Darkobugs cool! 🙂
I saw her in the mid nineties but also saw her when she was in The Sugarcubes. Always liked her.
I love her 😍
Mold ? really ? I had to get someone in to sort ours out.
@@TheVideoLounge I mean it’s what happens when you don’t deal with problem issues when they happen

@@TheVideoLounge 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😂
Bjork usually sings in Lydian. The sharp 4 is her go to.
Hmm, yes, I also know what most of those words mean
@@SodiumWage google is your friend
@@guillermodelnoche I felt it was worth elaborating further, it felt like a crude simplification of what she actually does tonally.
Damn! All your vids make me so happy! GO JUSTIN!
Cheers, keep up the great content!
god i love the emotion bjork evokes with her music/art.
I used to love The Sugarcubes & Bjork back in the day but this went right over my head lol. Thanks as ever Justin
Rick Beato gave you a shout out a couple of days ago - he said he’s up for a collab youtube video/interview. I’m sure we’d all love to see this - get on it!
She's so good at pushing her own boundaries. It keeps her interesting, don't it!
“Sometimes, ours is not to ponder.” Important words.
Ahahahahaha. I died at a cantina at Star Wars. Dude, you totally make my day. I always enjoy our visits. Take care bro. 🖤🤘🏻
As ever Justin you never fail to make me laugh, love all the witty analysis and sideways references... 🤣
Justin, they're Bass Clarinets.
I think that has been one of your greatest videos!!
Ah, Sylvian!
It’s bizarrely wonderful and vice versa, it’s art innit? She’s a breath of musical fresh air when you didn’t know you needed it 👍
First time watching your channel but new Bjork music brought me here / algorithm , do more Bjork!!!
It's like a melding of the Utopia and Biophilia eras of her career with a dash of gabber. Love her but it's not wierd at all for her at this stage, fairly logical progression to what she's been up to since Vulnicura.
You just earned yourself yet another new subscriber. Bjork is a species of music all her own. :)
Loved this so much!💕
Just to say Justin, you are THE MAN right now. I saw the Rick Beato show and he means it. I also saw you flash up on the Channel 33 rpm, so grab the opportunities as they come up. Well done,
I first listened to this song for about 5 times on repeat. Now im listening to what Justin has to say about it.
She's an aquired taste - we'll leave it at that!
@@HarryFlashman. Isn't everything though? ;)
I didn't want to go to her concert in 2003 but my friends were all going. ended up being top of my all time list of live shows. she has to be seen live if you like live music. it's something special.
She’s an artist, that’s all there is to it.
My coworkers tease me endlessly about my love of Bjork. :P
Tho, tbh....her later stuff IS harder to get into.
Keep them coming (take that how you wish)
As someone who has followed Bjork since the early 90's I have really struggled with her music (beyond the odd track) post Vespertine.
Will forever love and understand Björk.
I think if you're familiar with the work of composers like Schoenberg, Berg, Webern, Stockhausen, Ligeti, Penderecki, Gubaidulina, or jazz people like Ornette Coleman, et al, her stuff is very listenable. The costumes are cool though.
This one was utterly hilarious, Justin 😂
I love bjork! All ways pushing boundaries! Proper out there and as you say Justin unique 🤙🏼
All I can think is, "I'd love to see bjork collaborate with 100gecs." Would I like what they create? Probably not, but I am so curious.
I can never get tired of your you tube channel and you are so entertaining and talented x
That's where I'm at regarding the vocals and it's partially why I haven't really connected to her last few albums.
Justin, your joy in this is adorable! I love Bjork but even I find this one challenging.
Always liked her, she's out there ... but once you get it, you get it? It's like jazz
The techno bits are Bjork’s ode to Gabber. Apparently she binged on it during covid lockdown.
Bjork is interesting because she's like turning experimental music into pop
She reminds me of Zappa in her approach to music exploration.
Love this video.
Justin! Do Thee Oh Sees!
never has the title to a video been so apt!
It’s incredibly reminiscent of These New Puritans in its scope of arrangement and use of instruments ….
They woz/is amazing
Was just thinking about that too!
Banging tune; can’t get it out of my head. Real ear worm. But seriously will check it out ; thanks for posting; loving the channel 👍
You are my new favorite TH-cam channel!! I’m ashamed to admit, Taylor Hawkins brought me back to your beautiful self!! I was a huge fan when the first Darkness album came out and i don’t really know what happened but i look the other way i guess!! So glad you are back in my life with this channel and your fabulous music!! (And your hot piece of you!!! 🤪😁😁) 💚💚💚💚

Me too! I love you Justin xxx
Your spoken voice is beautiful and your guitar playing is beautiful! My new favourite channel!
