Very heavy turbulences in a A380

  • I was on a flight from Los Angeles to London a few days before Christmas 2016. The plane was a A380, operated by British Airways. I was sitting on the upper deck, last row. Less than 1 hour after take off we flew through very heavy turbulences. I never thought a A380 could shake that heavily. It was by far the heaviest turbulences I have experienced. I started recording after 5 minutes, because I found this very unusual. In the video you hear a few people shouting after a sick bag. I stopped recording after 4 more minutes because I thought its over. But then suddenly it got even worse, things flew from the service carriage and you nearly got lifted of the seat a few times. Over all it lasted around 15 minutes.

    I just love it when a plane is going side to side, your bowels are going up and down, your bricking it and the Captain or co pilot comes on in a calm voice and reassures everyone to remain calm. We will try to fly around this turbulence and make your flight as comfortable as we possibly can.....if only my underwear was to believe it.....cheeks clenched.

    Whenever the seatbelt signs come on my anxiety rises. I know there's nothing dangerous about turbulence and experienced air pockets before but it's still nerve wracking when you're being bumped about. It's the noises as well and as soon as someone says "oh shit" I immediately sit up like a meerkat 😕

      Nah....... if you can do it, try not to worry about turbulence, especially on a giant like an A380. Think of it as a bumpy road in your car, it's the same thing and it'll soon pass..... the pilots will often ask to fly a little higher or lower if they think it'll last for more than a couple of minutes.
      Trust me, it will quickly pass.😉

    As per definition this is moderate turbulence.
    Moderate turbulence consists of changes in your altitude or attitude, but your aircraft remains in positive control at all times. You'll feel a definite strain against you seat belt or shoulder straps. And if you have unsecured objects in the cabin, they'll become dislodged.
    The plane was under control at all times

      @@fortythreenorth2518 Actually not so - the penetration speed and velocity of movements are relative to the size of aircraft. It's a common misconception that big planes "absorb" turbulence. I try hard to picture the bumpy lane and driving over potholes - but never really successful. worst I've experienced was almost the entire flight from New Zealand to Singapore in january - awful. Never wanted to fly again but still had another 14 hours to the UK which was thankfully so smooth.

      @kyblack123 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The same thing happened to me about 20 years ago and thankfully, I haven’t really had much bad turbulence since. It was a Singapore Airline’s Boeing 777 overnight flight from Auckland to Singapore. The captain spoke to us about 10 mins into the flight, saying he would update us at intervals during the 91/2 hour flight. We then proceeded to have about 8 hours of weak to moderate turbulence and he never spoke again until we landed. That’s why I’m not a big fan of Singapore Airlines but I think Air New Zealand is great as the flight crews always communicate and let you know what’s happening in bad weather.

      @@Rocket-qg5jw Possibly, I feel like that might be pretty inefficient though. There's nothing to worry about when facing turbulence. As long as your plane isn't in a nose dive, or banking more that 40 degrees you've got nothing to worry about.

    I felt dizzy only from watching this🤯🤯 I hate turbulence, however I try to think of a few things while this is happening:
    1. Trust that the pilots know what they are doing and that you will safely arrive at your destination.
    2. Think of it as a bumpy road that you are travelling on just like when you travel by car.
    3. Also, if turbulence was this dangerous? Do you think anyone would actually work with flying planes and being the crew up there if there was a severe risk of dying every day? Besides, don't you think we would read about accidents literally EVERY DAY if that was the case?
    4. This might sound easier said than done but try to focus on your breathing.
    During all my last flights, I kept these notes written down on a paper to have a look at from time to time.

    15 hours of constant turbulence in the A380 from Australia to Doha so you should be happy yours only lasted 15 mins, I mean it wasn't this bad but still. The flight back was better, we had a bad dip at some point that I unfortunately was awake for even though I took sleeping pills lol but it was just the 1 and I was so grateful for that. I get some pretty gnarly stomach sinking so I could handle one but anymore and I don't know what would happen but it wouldn't be good. The first flight was essentially 15 hours of stomach and head sinking, I couldn't sleep a wink.
