I still love Marvin Gaye's music. I grew up on it. But I agree that his actions were deplorable. It's common knowledge to many old schoolers around that time, that Marvin Gaye took a liking to underage girls. The fact that his actions were swept under the rug, especially by family members, are just as deplorable, in my opinion.

I subscribed. I have read Janis Gaye's autobiography and am now reading Divided Soul. After reading these books and other articles about Marvin Gaye, I am convinced that he was as mentally disurbed as his father. His childhood abuse and excessive use of several drugs most likely caused his mental illness. However, he does remain one of my favorite singers.
Janis's book has some VERY disturbing details! I'm with you. I think that Marvin was sick and no different from his father.

That was actually more common than you think. Lots of young girls would have babies young and were unmarried. So, the grandmother would raise the child as their own. The same thing happened to Jack Nicholson. The woman who raised him - he thought that was his mother but she was really his grandmother. His sister was his actual mother.

For those who doubt this story you have good reason. I’m from Detroit, and according to my family and my father himself, who was about 17 in 1965, my father was secretly dating Denise Gordy that year. My grandparents didn’t live far from the Gordy mansion. As the story goes, which this piece did hit on the nose, Denise got pregnant, and since abortions were illegal at the time, you can imagine the PR damage it would have caused for the niece of Detroit royalty to be pregnant at 15. Since Anne could not give Marvin any kids, they did indeed decide to adopt Denise’s child and raise him as their own. However, Marvin in not the father. My father is the birth father. I actually got in touch with Marvin III back in 2003 or 04, via an online magazine with whom he was about to do an interview. I told them the story and the were curious enough to pass along my message to him and act as mediator between us. Through them, Marvin and myself exchanged several messages, which included a several pics of myself, my bother and my father. Though we all have different mothers as my pops was truly a rolling stone, you can see the strong resemblance between all four of us, especially between Marvin and my pops, with Marvin being the first of many children my pops fathered. In a nutshell, Marvin concluded his exchange by stating that he had DNA proof that he was Marvin Gaye’s biological son. I concluded my exchange by stating that if this is case, then my entire family was wrong and my pops was mistaken, though he and Denise were intimate. It would also mean that Denise was sexually active with more than one male at the time. I refrain from using the word ‘Man’ since my pops was only 17 himself. I also stated should he ever believe the DNA to be questionable and wanted to truly entertain this possibility to reach out to me via email. Needless to say I’ve never heard from him.

I heard that Marvin Gaye was not the actually the biological father of Marvin III and looking at him it makes sense. Anna and Berry were both manipulative. Denise might have been pregnant when they got Marvin to sleep with her to use it to keep him hooked.

There was a lot of dirt being done back then... still done today.
I remember back in the day a lot of people pretended that their kids were their sibblings. And the grand parents were the parents. They would also let an older sibbling adopt a secret child they didn't want to reveal. Things like that mainly happened to women under aged that was maybe rapped by somebody or had sexual contact too early in life, get pregnant and could ruin a career, and reputation or are just plain too young to take care of their child. A whole lot of that was going on. If you look at some of these Motown connections, or music industry... a lot of guys did the same women or were in love with them at the same time, one after another. Even if the guys were sibblings. It was jaw dropping because them being who they where, you would never think they would go that low. So it would be surprising to find that out.
My husband's Aunt Marjorie is actually his cousin. The oldest girl (Alice)was 15 when she got pregnant. Grandma faked that she was pregnant and I don't know where they stuck Alice for those 9 months. There were 9 kids in this family & they lived on a very remote farm. This family kept up this charade for years, although it must have been difficult with all those kids being made to keep the secret. I honestly think that this little lie that led to a thousand lies affected this family for a long time. This was back in the 40's.

Good information. I learned of this years ago I recall reading Mercy Mercy Me: The Art, Loves and Demons of Marvin Gaye. I’m not justifying Marvin sleeping with a teenage girl in which he did at least twice including his wife Janice. But I think it helps to understand the complexities of Marvin Gaye even the sexualization during that time much of which was hidden behind the church. Marvin Sr a Pentecostal preacher who abused him and I believe that abuse was also sexual, not to mention Sr. being a crossdresser which added more confusion. He spared the rod and spoiled the child. Psychologically Marvin wanted to be in control but he was looking to be saved. His mother didn’t protect him so he married a woman old enough to be his mother. The younger women offered him the chance to be in control or to mold a woman into his likeness. He was divided. He wanted to be everything his father wasn’t but was torn. His father tortured him and at the same time had the rod and the Bible.
I couldn't even read less than half, a girl was traumatised, manipulated and here you are trying to find excuses for this predator. You're lost.
I'm sure that there were many contributing factors that made Marvin Jr as sick as Marvin Sr, but there is no explanation for this. Any type of explanation approaches justifying his bahavior. And if he knew enough to hide it from law enforcement authorities, then he knew that it was wrong.
