I think her mother just wanted to be excepted by society just like any other black person back then, it was the Jim Crow era. All black professional in all career fields suffered racism. And some suffered colorism as well in their own backyard. I don't blame her mother for colorism, society is the blame. And it still goes on today just like racism.

My cousin Janice grew up with Natalie in Hancock Park, they were the only two black families in the neighborhood….. 50’s -70’s my cousin Janice father was a Doctor!
They were not the only two. Hancock Park is next to Country Club Park and Longwood Highlands, as well as Wilshire Center on one side and Greater Wilshire on the other. They all fed into the same junior high: Burroughs Middle School and either LA High School or Fairfax HS (not that the well heeled attend public school after elementary, but some do). A little further southeast is the West Adams area, where several of the churches that affluent Blk LA attended still stand (Holman UMC, First AME, et al). All of these areas were ones in which Paul R. Williams designed buildings and homes, leaving a remarkable imprint on the landscape. The entire swath was part of affluent Blk LA, some with higher Blk populations than others.
Exactly - there were quite a few (my first cousin lived on June street right off of Wilshire and my grandaunt too). They didn’t mess with the white people and were pretty insular but they were there

Natalie's mother reminds me of both of my great-grandmothers. They were light-skinned ("redbone") women from Louisiana who married darker-skinned men but were very self-hating/racist about blackness. They would make their kids bathe with bleach to lighten their skin and would push them to befriend only light-skinned blacks or preferably white people.

Yesss❤! Awesome movie! Incredible performance by Fishbourne and surprise awesone appearance by Natalie Cole! I have a copy of this movie that I cherish!
I've always been a fan of her father and hers. I thought her mom was a classy lady, after seeing her with Natalie on the Dinah Shore show, but a colorist is a troubled person. I feel for her children growing up under her comments and aspirations-- poor Natalie and her siblings. I noticed that you never see pictures of the adopted children, I guess they got kicked to the curb after birth children came along. Probably sent to boarding school and kept out of the limelight. I saw Natalie in concert in Ontario, Canada in 1988. I still have the grainy pictures, because I was so far back, but her voice was magical! Thank you for doing this tribute for a true bright star!
I can relate to the time period Natalie grew up in. That is the way I was brought up too and I raised my own son that way too. You only know what you are taught. Natalie's mother probably was raised the same.
Natalie was born before my mom, but my mom was raised in black bubble. She didn't know how whites could be until she got into the integrated workforce. How we are raised makes the difference. She raised us differently and it helped. I now work with teens and see that one black kid in the midst of whites who have no idea yet how the real world is. Their fragility is sad to me because black parents need to be proud of who we are yet realistic about how some whites can view all of us.
The music industry was notoriously bad at giving the artist whatever drugs they wanted. They felt it would help them to be more creative. I can’t help but think how many lives were ruined because of this.
I didn't know she went through all of that! Wow, but God pulled her through. Amazing woman with an amazing talent. I've always loved her father's music as well. His voice sounds so majestic to me. Great video, Karine❤

Thank you for this! I saw one of her last performances back in Chicago. It was one of the best concerts I had ever been too. I grew up listening to her music but never even thought to see her live. So glad I did. Her remake of Tell Me All About It was turned into a House MUSIC CLASSIC! She actually sang to the House version and the audience went nuts!! We all started dancing. It was awesome! I do remember how frail she looked but her voice did not waiver at all! I am so thankful to God that I grew up in a time when music was real music. My Mom had an extensive record collection that filled 2 rooms. And because of that I became a singer. Natalie Cole was played often (Mr. Melody) I do perform several of her songs from her last album and jazz album. People have forgotten about her music UNTIL they hear it…thank you Karine!
I'm a huge fan of hers from way back. I knew about her drug addiction, however, I didn't know she used her voice to lure men to sleep with girls. It's at once shocking and sad. Never judge a book by it's cover. Her honesty and ability to overcome her difficulties is admirable. May she rest in peace. 🌹🌺🌻💐

Many blessings to the Cole family. I grew up listening to her and her dad's music. I also have covered some of her dad's songs; most recently I sang "Autumn Leaves" and played Taps at my own dad's funeral in 2022. For some reason I do feel a great connection to them.
she sang a version of lucy in the sky with diamonds that should have been made into a single with powerful rock guitar. she was not hooked up with the right producers and musicians at a time when she should have been at the height of her potential fame circa 1978 to 1986.

Rip Queen.......you gifted us with your beautiful..... thoughtful music 🎵.
The music industry was notoriously bad at giving the artist whatever drugs they wanted. They felt it would help them to be more creative. I can’t help but think how many lives were ruined because of this.
she was truly one of a kind 🔥😍
I didn't know she went through all of that! Wow, but God pulled her through. Amazing woman with an amazing talent. I've always loved her father's music as well. His voice sounds so majestic to me. Great video, Karine❤
Thanks for the great content. My parents were big fans of Nat King Cole. And by the way, you have a lovely speaking voice. It's like velvet.
WOW! She’s an Aquarius like me and she’s also born on Bob Marley’s Bday too! Thank you for this Karine!
My sisters and I had the best memories jamming out to Natalie. She’s was so talented and beautiful!
Great video. Thanx
Ms. Natalie Cole! What a talented woman! Her childhood was unhappy! Her and her mom didn't get along! She saw a different world when she got into college! Got famous and got into substance abuse! Got on them bad! She got back up and Her career flourished again! Her health battles were challenging! I love all of her music! She definitely unforgettable! Loved her! Thanks for doing her story! Good job!😅😅😅🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🥰🥰🥰🥰💐💐💐💐💐💐💐💐
She was abusing drugs before she got famous. look at the movie about her life
Great video. The background music is awesome. Thanks for sharing ❤️❤️
💐🌺🌺 Natalie will never be forgotten! Ok so glad she is at peace . God bless her soul! Rest easy Mrs. Cole🩷🩷🙏🏾🙏🏾
I really miss this awesome lady!!! I wish I could have seen her in concert💐💐💐💐
Loved Natalie her posthumous duet with her dad was so beautiful RIP 🌹
I'm a huge fan of hers from way back. I knew about her drug addiction, however, I didn't know she used her voice to lure men to sleep with girls. It's at once shocking and sad. Never judge a book by it's cover. Her honesty and ability to overcome her difficulties is admirable. May she rest in peace. 🌹🌺🌻💐
the title is a lie!
@@sarahbaartmansrevenge It was explained during the video. Unfortunately Natalie went through a very very hard time with drugs and to pay for her habit she would make these calls. She admitted it herself.
@@lydiapicano8806 ‘girls’ and WOMEN are two different things
@@sarahbaartmansrevenge Yes of course. I don't judge her because drugs make people do things they wouldn't do ordinarily.
@@lydiapicano8806 This no-life person be trolling her channel all day without watching her videos or dumb enough to pay attention to the title that she explained. Ignore that child.
This is what can happen when you don't have supportive people in your life regardless of what things may look like on the outside.
When I was in HS I was looking for any kind of music to delve into and went as far back as Nat king Cole. It was the late 90’s and I was jamming to the greatest hits from Nat King Cole, and I loved it!!
Natalie Cole was a beautiful, talented woman. I still love her music!!!! I miss her so much. Rest in Paradise, Natalie.🌹🌹
She went like so many Black performers, hooked on junk, booze,,,. We always get owned and seldom by ourselves. Damn shame! NEXT,,,!
You must have read my mind! I was just wondering when you were going to cover Natalie Cole! Thanks!
🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷 My mom almost named me Natalie Nicole in the late 70s, but only ended up using Nicole as my middle name. So when I had my first daughter, I chose the name Natalie. I grew up listening to and loving both her and her dad's music. Thankful for their wonderful music they shared with the world, it was unforgettable! RIP Natalie and Nat. 🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷
God bless Natalie Cole. She endured so much in her life. She was a strong spirit and moving forward. She was beautiful inside and outside. She will remain in our hearts for ever ♥️
Thank you for this video I adored Natelie! Her music was sung at my wedding back in 1976! This was well done👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿
SEEING MS NATALIE perform in Vegas was spectacular highlight of my life. she was all you wish she would be and more.
She was a sweet person she came to the church I use to attend before she died.. she was so humble . She was friends with pastor Clint brown
Wow, I forgot just how talented Natalie Cole was. Thank you for the video.
Thanks for sharing.❤ She was My First Lady Of Soul & Pop & Jazz!🥰 Beautiful picture selections.🦋🦋🦋
This lady is forever apart of my childhood❤❤❤❤😢
Great video! I saw too that her son passed away less than 2 years after Natalie Cole. 😢
So many young girls got horrible mothers. So sad.
💐🌹🌷 Always liked Natalie Cole's voice/music. Miss you, Natalie!
her mom was a piece of work
She was unbelievable
A kind….understatement.
R.I.P. to a beautiful woman with a matching voice
I loved both Nat and Natalie's songs. "Unforgettable" by Nat, and "Our Love" and "Jumpstart" are three of my all-time favorite songs. Furthermore, Natalie was also one of my favorite actresses. I wish that she continued on longer to grace the world with her exceptional talents. She is definitely missed.
Great work, and thank you for YOUR talent in bringing us these wonderful (sometimes untold) stories. 👍🏾
“Jumpstart” is my jam. My mom would play it often
R.I.E.P Cole family
Such a beautiful elegant woman, may still continue to rest in peace ❤❤
I’m so excited for the Nat King Cole video 😭 ❤❤ I love learning more about him and his beautiful family and daughters. You’re the QUEEN of well studied and diverse commentary!!! No one holds a torch to you!!
Can you do a video on Kelly Rowland and Ledisi. Thank you! 🙏🏾
Fantasia Barrino❤
Many blessings to the Cole family. I grew up listening to her and her dad's music. I also have covered some of her dad's songs; most recently I sang "Autumn Leaves" and played Taps at my own dad's funeral in 2022. For some reason I do feel a great connection to them.
Her beauty was so unique, my her spirit forever rest in paradise
she sang a version of lucy in the sky with diamonds that should have been made into a single with powerful rock guitar. she was not hooked up with the right producers and musicians at a time when she should have been at the height of her potential fame circa 1978 to 1986.
Thank you for sharing this story! I watched her movies not knowing the story behind the scenes! She was a very classy lady!❤❤❤❤💄💄💄💄
My favorite singer ever!!! I used to close my door, grab my hairbrush, and become a “Sophisticated Lady”!!!
We appreciate your insights. You'll always have our support.
Sounds like her mom wanted to pass.
Not being married to a bm
🌼 🌸 🌻 🌹 She was truly unforgettable. Great job.
I love Natalie Cole she just went through life. Whatever was going through in the 60’s 70’s and 80’s she right there. She also lived a privileged life. Did you see her movie what she had to do to get herself clean. Love you Natalie Cole
I was blessed to see her live in concert around 2010. She performed well and was hitting all the notes!
She was beautiful! And she resembled Kenya Moore in a striking way (or should I say, Kenya resembles her) lol!
She's definitely.... unforgettable and truly missed God Bless her family and keep them strong during this time rest in peace sister🙏🏿😇
I'll be glad when TH-cam begins to flag and block videos with inflammatory titles like this one. The fact that you use the word girls would imply that they were underage that was never said and it's not true
THANK YOU
