    I played Freedoom Phases 1 and 2 a while back. I wasn't able to appreciate the art direction and aesthetic style back then. Fast forward to now, you can find Doom mods that incorporate some of Freedoom's art assets (CC0, I think). Freedoom is still in development even until today (have yet to reach version 1.0, due to sprite work needing changes and map redesigns). I agree the maps currently aren't intuitive, but here's hoping to more people contributing to Freedoom.

      If you look carefully in the video during the part where I'm showing Golden Souls 2 you'll see the old model of the "Imp" replacement. That's something that's already gotten a lot better. I do optimistically look forward to the future of Freedoom.

    The "Free" part in Freedoom refers to freedom, not price. It's about providing the Doom modding community with an independent base that isn't under the control of a corporation or any one person. You kind of figure it out within the video but I don't think it fully clicked. "Free" means two different things in the English language - in other languages like Spanish, "libre" and "gratis" mean different things.

    Freedoom is legendary in what it stands for and what it does. I believe everyone should have acsess to such a thing, be given the keys to such an incredible world of gameplay and modding for free is awesome.
    Though in the end it's just as easy to download the real WADs from any number of fan sites and play that way, so you can get the real thing, and pay no money for it whatsoever. Doom shouldn't cost money anymore at all. I'd much rather just yoink the real thing instead of this.
    But in the end, so long as the most amount of people possible can have the chance to enter the world that is Doom and Doom modding for free, that's all that matters. Truly one of the greatest games of all time.

    I totally agree with the ending. ZDaemon has been there for me when I felt I had nothing. No matter who you are, or where you live, you can always find at LEAST 2 or 3 active servers, and what really gets me to tears is how even if it's just 1 or 2 people on it, they are always welcoming to their fellow slayers. You can go in and not say a word as you grind away killing baddies, or sometimes, if you decide to chat and open up about your life, you can sometimes find someone, provided they speak English (people fron countries you didn't even know existed play) that will listen. Because that's who we are. We're brothers in DooM. We all enjoy the game, and share that one identical goal of escaping reality. Sometimes you'll join a server and everyone's just staring at walls cause they're holding a conversation in chat instead. I've made a few friends there that although I had no clue who they are, they're now facebook friends who tell me Happy Birthday more than my real ones. Who am I kidding, they ARE the real ones. For a game about hell and demons, it honestly has the most blessed community. If you ever find yourself feeling down and out, please know that there are servers just WAITING for you to visit, and there is an abundance of maps, WADs, and map building software to keep you entertained for life. Slay on, space marines.

    I'm always glad to see Freedoom get some recognition. The art can be kinda off at times but the ability to play wads like Scythe 1-2, D2TWID, and other more vanilla to Boom level wads is absolutely amazing. Also FreedoomGuy's face is kinda adorable honestly and it sets him apart from regular Doomguy in a way I like. He's got some pudge and dough in that mug of his despite doing all of what Doomguy can do and it's cute in a weird way.

    Okay my guy I have been a doomer since 1996 so this taught me very little personally but can I just say THANK YOU for going through the hassle of explaining the fundamental infrastructure of doom. There is surprisingly little info out there and certainly even less in such a digestible way so new doomers and mappers I regularly catch have huge issues understanding how sourceports, wads, etc interconnect

  • @intheshadowofathousandbean563
    @intheshadowofathousandbean563 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    That got weirdly wholesome towards the end.
    I agree though, in the age of companies wanting to suck up the very last drop off of your savings, it truly is underappreciated how great Doom community really is, the fact that you can get Freedoom completely for free and have thousands upon thousand of obviously free mods (because it is illegal to monetize them) that either enhance or completely modify the game into an entirely different game is remarkable, you have a near endless entertainment literally for free, not only that, the modding community only seems to get more and more active and creative with each year, while many other modding communities of other games die out, or the interest in them does.
    Thank you Doom and every single person involved into making this game and its community what it is.

  • @plazmasyt

    FreeDoom is a great thing, even I can admit that, as much as I myself can't get any enjoyment from it. I'm not gonna share my own gripes about it here as that would end up being a whole long text wall, but I will share one thing. Because of the differences that *are* in FreeDoom, it *is not* compatible with all mods.
    The biggest issue that comes of this is that when you play online with, say, Zandronum. When the server calls for a vanilla map to be loaded it will try to load that map, then fail to verify that your map is the same as the one the server requested, then you get booted. There is no way around that other than to just not play on servers that don't have map packs installed.
    The second issue with the asset differences though is in the art; some ZDoom/Zandronum mods call upon art assets in your IWAD in order to manipulate them on the fly. A prime example of this is with Xaser's Parkour mod, which will have the weapon sprites looking cut up and mangled in weird and wonderful ways.
    Also, fun fact, pk3 files (only ever used in GZDoom as a replacement for the wad format) are actually just renamed zip files. You can seriously just rename a GZDoom mod from .pk3 to .zip and browse all the files in your normal file browser. Other engines however, have their own distinct formats that don't work like this, like Eternity's .pke format. c:

    • @UtterSpartan
      @UtterSpartan  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I've never attempted to use Freedoom with Zandronum, I admit. This should change in the future but so far like 99% of my Doom experience has been single player. The last time I played Zandronum most servers I could find were using some weird Modern Warfare 2 mod with bitcrushed sprites of all the weapons. That's my excuse for not knowing about that incompatibility.
      I played about 20 mods with Freedoom in preparation of doing this video. I never once had any issues. This ranged from weapon mods, to maps, to TCs. I wish I'd known about the Parkour mod issue ahead of time, but I also admit I've never used it. I am aware that Freedoom is still in development so maybe they could do something about that kind of error, but it sounds like it's more on Xaser to do something about it.
      I knew that .pk3 files were basically ZIP files but I didn't know they were literally renamed ZIP files. That's cool. I don't have much experience with The Eternity Engine but maybe someday I'll give it more of a fair shake. I tried to get it running once like 5 years ago and I failed hard. A lot has changed since then so hey, I'd like to see how it works. I hadn't heard of that unique format before. Thanks for the comment.

    • @plazmasyt
      @plazmasyt 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@UtterSpartan Ah yeah, I know what Zandro mod you're talking about. Probably RGA2, which as far as I'm aware has fallen off in popularity because of how much it used to be played. I'll admit to enjoying it once upon a time, mostly just for the weapon feedback and for a quick power trip. I don't play it now though as I've actually gone back and reexperienced vanilla Doom good and proper, now I mostly just play on either Crispy Doom or GZDoom with the Smooth Doom mod, though I'm definitely no stranger to some of the wackier mods out there. Just check out Endless Madness if you want a taste of that. c:
      On the topic of engine-specific modding though, Eternity has a pretty nice showcase in the form of Heartland. Its "GZDoom UDMF map"-style map architecture is nothing short of impressive in an engine that's just upgraded Boom. I highly recommend it.
      On the other hand though, Doomsday Engine. Good luck running that full stop.

    • @R0ck4x3
      @R0ck4x3 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, anything that requires the original Doom assets isn't gonna work with FreeDoom unfortunately, so ofc Zandronum is out for vanilla maps, and mods like Brutal Doom, Demonsteele, and Parkour are not gonna work right. However, most Doom mods don't require the original Doom assets and those should work in FreeDoom with little to no issues.

      Considering Doom/Doom II (and their resource files) are frequently on sale for $5 or less (and that's digital market places, I'm sure you can probably find old disks/CD-ROMs for even less out in the wild), and the number of free content that takes advantage of the Doom resources files, seems kind of pointless. Barring that, I'm sure you can "find" the wad files with a cursory Google search if you truly can't afford a few bucks for the re-releases/an old copy.

    The levels are decent enough, the source port is most important and original mods/wads available are compatible with freedoom. Duke Nukem 3D nearly has it's own variant in the works 20 years ago, known simply as "Dave 3D", which itself is based off of "Dave Gnukem", the Open Source Port of the original 2D Duke.
    But because 3DR were being "Nintendo" with their brand, they took it down on the basis of "we don't want people not having to pay for our game to play mods of said game, we need that sponduli for DK Forever".
    These days, the closest attempt to it is a mod simply known as "Luke Ken 3D". Seems promising, and it's legally distinct enough to get away with it.

    As much as we may find the design in freedoom odd just the fact that it is a thing has done wonders for the community, it can be bundled with source ports and mods to make them "standalone" out of the box with minimal effort and not only is it free to download but the assets are all free to use too, not necessarily in a WAD, they're there for indie devs to use on ANY game and you're encouraged to.
    I should say though... You tend to recommend extensive GZDoom mods to run on "toasters" and unfortunately despite the graphics looking old the GZDoom code is really extended and the doom renderer isn't good with extensive and hyperdetailed maps as it wasn't made for those so both the CPU and GPU requirements go way up with GZDoom. This doesn't mean that everything on it will run slow, but don't promise people that they can run Golden Souls 3 or Reelism on anything because that isn't true, not really a big problem and there's many WADs and stuff that can run on anything but it's worth keeping in mind.

    • @UtterSpartan
      @UtterSpartan  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I've helped several people I know get into using Doom mods with GZDoom. We've had to mess with settings for sure, but I've got people playing Reelism on some real low-grade Intel CPUs. Several years ago even. There are certain mods that definitely require more, no doubt, but perhaps I've just had a lot of luck with it so far. I know for certain that GZDoom is a long way from being truly optimized but I dunno, it hasn't screwed me or anyone I know over so far.
      It's worth mentioning for the context of this video that I didn't explicitly say that Freedoom had to be used in GZDoom. I probably should have picked different examples for my video though. I think it would have been more fair to everyone if I picked like scythe2.wad or something relatively low power like that. I just made that other video recently and GS3 and Reelism were on my mind.
      I noticed while getting footage for this that Call of Abdulov took the pain grunts from Freedoom. I was aware that there are projects that have used Freedoom as a base and in a longer video I would have gone into more detail with them. This video was edited on kind of a crunch period and I wanted to keep it short. I will likely elaborate further on this in a Comments & Corrections video in the future. Thanks for the comment.

    In some ways, Freedoom feels like a gimmick since it's more well known for its legally-distinct assets than the actual game itself, a-la the 'dancing bear' trope.
    I'm also surprised there's never been an official storyline given to its two phases outside of a few intermission screens, but considering Doom never had much of a story to begin with, that more or less makes sense.

    there should also be some explaining in the difference between source ports, launchers and wads, because that seems to confuse people the most. you dont "have to" use a launcher IF your wad is a COMPLETE program in its own. But if you have a launcher, you still need a source port. and that makes modding for doom quite hard, since you in most cases for making the most out of your mods, you will need to have 1. doom or freedoom. 2. launcher like zdl OR a source port. 3. a source port (see whats makes it strange when you can run it from gzdoom directly or by zandronum or zdl BUT STILL THROUGH GZDOOM, and finally 4. mods.

    Actually .PK3s are just .ZIPs with folders in them containing different resources. Usually, the only WADs that should be in there are ones that hold just a single map each.

    I still have my old CDs for the original Doom II and Ultimate Doom, so I can just run source ports off of those without the need for Freedoom, but I still have copies of that downloaded well for the novelty. I've also had fun swapping assets between the two for an even more surreal experience.
    On the tangent of Freedoom being so much difficult than the originals, I always chalked that up to it being designed by people who have been playing Doom so long that the original vanilla version just isn't challenging to them any more.

    Well it's Doom, so of course the level design consists of mazes and/or open ended design. Would you rather have linear corridors like in modern day shooters? As for FreeDoom itself, it's still being worked on. Personally I prefer the art style in FreeDoom over Classic Doom.

    Freedoom's problem in my opinion is changing the wrong things. I liked the old e1m1 way more then the one they replaced it with a few years ago. I thought the old imp sprites were great (the ones that looked like a cobra), and the older map01 music track for phase 2 was great, I have no idea why they changed any of those 3 things. It's been a few years since I finished freedoom 1, I remember the last chapter's level design being really uninspired (reminded me of TNT) and the spider mastermind replacement sprites were awful. Those are what they should have worried about fixing. Maybe they have at some point, I might check it out again sometime.

      Just load the mod with FreeDoom in your Source port of choice. Assuming you're going to use GZDoom just select the mods and drop them on the Exe. Then choose the FreeDoom wads depending on what they depend on (Phase 1 for Doom 1, Phase 2 for Doom 2 and Final Doom). Press play and done
