Welcome to yet another edition of Issues and Insiders.
    I'm Min Sunhee.
Marriage is looking to be tougher for Korea's men than its women.
For more I have Doctor Heo Nayoung at Shanghai University live on the line.
    Doctor Heo it's a pleasure.
I also have Kwon Soa with us.
    Soa welcome.
    1) Doctor Heo, let's begin with details of your research including its results.
    2) Doctor Heo, what do you believe are the main reasons behind this gender imbalance?
    3) Now Soa, do tell us more about Korea's past preference for baby boys, and I believe this was not simply a national trend though?
    4) But Soa, over the past years, there has been a shift in this preference from boys to girls, right?
    5) Doctor Heo, speaking as a scholar of sociology, how do you explain the shift in preference from boys to girls?
    6) Beyond Korea, Doctor Heo, I understand that bleak marriage prospects are also the reality in a few other countries.
What more can you tell us?
    7) Doctor Heo, what do you propose to raise the prospects of marriage for men in countries where they outnumber women?
    8) And Soa, statistics do prove that international marriages in Korea have been on the rise, right?
    9) Doctor Heo, generally speaking, quite a number of young adults here in Korea are shunning marriage.
Again, what are your suggestions to tackle this social concern?
    10) Soa, for the sake of some perspective, do tell us why a growing number of young Koreans are choosing to stay single.
    All right.

Totally agree with you. So many generations of daughters in law were used as domestic helpers and nursing home caregivers. No wonder young women don't want to marry so early now.

Spot on! The strong patriarchal values and inherent machismo, total disrespect for women and viewing agression against women as a sign of a strong man is so deeply ingrained in most societies. Domestic abuse in Japan and Korea is an epidemic (I am sure in all the rest too, but I mention the ones I have first contact with and have @personally witnessed) Women are getting sick of this nonsense. Women are choosing to stay single and fulfill their nurturing needs by having a pet. You’ll be an outcast, but a happy outcast. Marriage is a VERY BAD IDEA.

Another reason for this is the forced male conscription into the military.
This result in more "aggressive men".
As men are in the military women can advance their career as men are still training .
as a result the preference shift is stronger right now . The conscription need to be made full gender and noncompulsory.
Also there are women only universities so most men meet women at work and not even in university..
The reason for women only universities is also because the men aren't fresh out of highschool so they probably need a different type of schooling programme after conscription into the military

    • @MissyxAkunai
      @MissyxAkunai 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +176

Yes, but I wouldn't call it a boycott as much as it's just a practical/safety thing to do or a way of life / movement. Domestic violence is really high and sadly there have been an increase in cases in the public (example stalking, violence, etc) that have resulted in trauma. It's no different than in America where there are plenty of people who would rather stay single than date, but there's a name for it in SK. It's called 4B, aka No Dating, Sex, Marriage, Children (which all kinda already happens if you just choose not to date in general). Also to note, there are different types of people in this movement, not everyone is opposed to dating/sex/marriage, most just don't want children (for reference almost 50% of men in the younger generation don't want kids), but they are all clumped together in this movement.
Example, most recently, there was a random guy (20s) who went into a convenience store and attacked a female store clerk (20s) bc she "looked" like a feminist due to her short haircut (the store clerk didn't know the man nor did she interact with him in the store prior to the assault, also she was not a feminist, she had a shoulder length bob cut), the guy part of a men's rights activist group and his belief was "I think feminists deserve to be assaulted". He even continued to attack another customer (50s) with a chair when they tried to intervene. These attacks are becoming more frequent, it's difficult to tell who is an extremist anymore so many people believe it's easier / safer to just not date at all.

    • @heredianna2496
      @heredianna2496 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +129

It's boycotting marriage who don't make any sense where you lose your personality, you're not being treated with respect, you lose money since you can't work as much, you lose your professional experience since you have to stop working at some point to have babies, you lose your body because you have a baby.... and the only purpose seems to procreate while you end up in depression...with a man that can leave you anytime and create a new family while you have lost so much. Most women would be glad to be in a happy/respectful marriage or committed relationship that is a true partnership. That makes things easier for everyone, men and women. Meaning both men and women agreed prior the marriage of what their role would be but it seems that for some men it's too much to ask. Men complain women don't want them anymore when women just say they don't want be with a men just because. Since more women can take care of themselves they don't need a man for financial protection. They need respect and partnership and loyalty and the men who understand that instead of complaining do not struggle. To many women have seen the impact of such "forced" marriage on their mothers and grandmother's. It never ended well for them. People often say it was better before.... But for whom really...

South Korea is not alone in gender imbalance. I am a white American female. I was adopted in 1953 from a family of nine; three boys and six girls. My birth parents kept the boys and the first two girls. Four of us girls were given up for adoption. This preference was the norm all over the world. Then in the 1980s there was international adoption of Korean male children; I know four men of Korean ethnicity between the ages of 30-38 years old who were adopted by white American couples. This has always confused me, but since viewing this video I understand the reasons.

That isn't really the same thing, given you're still alive. Gender imbalances at the scale that effects family formation down the line require sex-selective abortion (or infanticide). Also, at least these days, it's actually the reverse - girls are adopted more readily than boys, with the commonly cited reason being women driving the adoption process and generally somewhat preferring to parent girls.

Do you know Why women live longer? It has to do with the lies in talking about. The lies that appear as truth today, the same truth YOU believe as truth.
We ALL value life right???? Right??? Universally. So why do WOMEN 1. Give life 2. Live LONGER.
Do you think those two things are significant at all? So you think they are a coincidence?
Why do men say THEY are superior but women hold on to the MOST valuable thing LONGER????
Why do men say THEY have more value but CANT STOP CHASING WOMEN and LOOK WOMEN are wanting NOTHING to do with men.
I ask these they are ALL following the same pattern. The pattern being they don't match social NORM. These are NATURE not matching social norms which are MAN-MADE and therefore INFERIOR.
That means the inferior thing is the LIE. that means what you believe IS the LIE. and you believe it bc it was told and multiplied by men and used to infect women's minds so women no longer know what's truth.
So here's the truth as I have researched it. Women are SUPERIOR. By leaps and BOUNDS. In fact with women's true superiority, men CANNOT even exist. But that's another discussion.
Piintim trying to make is females are STURDIER. Which means in ANY environment, culture, more girls would be born because boys die way more before birth. So if you're seeing ANY "equal" birth ratio, or more boys, it's because girls have been ABORTED or KILLED, as kids or even adults.
      PERIOD.
so the 1:1 sex ratio in America, yeah dead females, to the tune of MILLIONS. Just so the math. Let's say I'm wrong and I'm some crazy lady on the Internet. You HAVE heard men die younger right? Ok. If there was no female infanticide AND boys and girls are born at the same rate, then of men die younger, something verifable, then the sex ratio would NOT be equal would it! EVER based on just that alone.
That again proves an imbalance favoring WOMEN is NATURAL.
But we have gender balance bc men are killing women at ALL ages. So no there was not any absence of male preference or female infanticide in US. it IS GLOBAL.

Studies have shown that for many lower middle class families it's actually better financially for the mom to stay home with the children. The costs for a low income earner to pay for child care, transportation to and from work, work clothes, etc. were often more than the women earned.
But an even bigger cost in Korea is the hakwons or specialized tutoring for piano, math, english, etc. That's truly what's behind the huge cost of raising children. It's funny how Koreans take so much pride in being college grads but they lack the skills to teach their own children for free at home? You learn at a young age that a square does not fit in a round hole and yet Koreans have determined that all of their children will be academics? It's beyond belief that people think this way. Not every person has to go to college and people with trade skills, farmers, people who work with their hands should not be looked down upon.

Usually, there are slightly more male baby being born with the ratio being like 51% boys and 49% girls. The reason for this can be found in the womb: more female embryos die before being born. This leads to more weak baby-boys being more. That’s the reason why more male than female babies die. There are also much more younger guys dying in their 20‘s due to car crashes and suicide.

No there are NO more boy births than girls births UNLESS the girls are being killed off. A female child is the DEFAULT baby, despite what men say. And bc it is the default children, it is far more STURDY genetically. male sperm are faster and conceived at 110 to 100 females, but they miscarry far more often bc they are genetically unsturdy. You don't know that, it's not common knowledge because....MEN LIE. so in society where they don't tamper with the babies, women will ALWAYS be born MORE. ALWAYS.

This is not a passport bro country at all. It’s a very homogeneous population and foreigners are looked down upon, a little less so from ultra wealthy countries. This isn’t some country where foreign men swoop girls off their feet, Seoul is more modern than probably all western cities and Korean education is among top in the world.

Who wants to marry in 2024 anyway? Moreover living cost and real estate prices in Korea are sky high… many Korean guys have told me they think marriage, wife and kids are like shackles to a man.

you say living costs are going up.. so then wouldnt staying single makes it harder to afford things?
forget about kids, if people got married with then had two sources of income, that would help with the increased living cost problem

@@JustinK0 hahaha most women will tell you: my husband’s money is for both of us, but the money I make is my money only.
Women usually don’t contribute and if they do is 20% at best.
Prices for suitable homes to raise a family in Korea are sky-high like everywhere else. After having 2 kids most couples are “dry” and living from paycheck to paycheck. Then if an emergency or accident takes place and you don’t have insurance it means: good bye savings…

Why having children? Might as well remain single and keep Ur savings for your old age needs. Children nowadays don't take care of old parents..unless they are bourned with silver spoons.Old and frail parents are expensive.
money are needed to buy diapers, underpads and medicine for them. Your spouses ( husbands or wives) most likely will refuse for you to contribute because a couple's savings will be needed to spend on their own kids and keep some savings for themselves. Most old parents having had to work to feed themselves later in life😂 Children nowadays are also more selfish and self- centred....the so- called e- generations😅

Asking because I really don't know, is there is no retirement pension in Korea?
If yes, why would elders need to work to feed themselves? The retirement pension is so low that basic needs are not fulfilled?
