Kotaro Takabayashi said it dragged too much. Meaning too much talking not enough action. But I told him sometimes it starts out slow but it captures you. I failed to convert him into the world of gundam.
Fun fact: In Stardust Memory, the Japanese voice actor of Anavel Gato is by Akio Otsuka (大塚 明夫), and Eiphar Synapse is Chikao Ohtsuka (大塚 周夫). Chikao Ohtsuka actually is Akio Otsuka's father, and Akio Otsuka is also the Japanese voice actor of Solid Snake from Metal Gear Solid, Chikao Ohtsuka casted the old Big Boss in MGS4. The conflicts of nuclear weapon between father and son never ends.

Nanomachines inside their bodies enhance and regulate their abilities. Genetic control, information control, emotion control, battlefield control…everything is monitored and kept under control. War…has changed. The age of deterrence has become the age of control, all in the name of averting catastrophe from weapons of mass destruction, and he who controls the battlefield, controls history. Hope everyone is keeping safe during these hard times but we all know even myself as a 29 ye old Dad that Anime can help us so much during these times, love people 🇬🇧💪🏽👊🏽💜
I hope they make a prequel of iron blooded orphans. I’m interested to see barbatos fighting again in the calamity war. My favorite gundam and gundam series by far.
Anybody that says IBO is they're favorite needs to watch more Shows cause IBO is flashy and the designs are cool but it's straight bottom of the barrel overall, it's just simplified as fuck to be as marketable as possible and not much else.
I love Endless Waltz. I watch it every Christmas. It is my Christmas tradition movie(since it takes place at Christmas, it's a Christmas movie. Fight me)
@@chaikagaz Calling something "garbage" in an edgy tone does not validate an otherwise subjective opinion. It also does not amount to constructive crticism. Had you critiqued it objectively and logically using factual and statistical basis, you may have had a case for it not being a good movie. But no, Gundam 00 the movie is a good movie based on expert opinion and anime critics.
@@chaikagaz gundam 00 movie will not be considered as a garbage to u if you really watched and understand the 1st and 2nd season of Gundam 00...the movie serves well as a sequel to the both seasons.....so basically you are not aware of the "first dialogue" that happened in the movie and has been stated multiple times in the season 2.
@Waifu Kun he said if u watched the show youd get the movie, nothing about rewatching it. I watched it once and got it maybe it'll come to you overtime. Name drop CCC is kind of a cop out bandwagon move. Need a new designation for some of y'all: SLOWTYPES
Man I started with G Gundam and have watched the series at least 15-20 times, and Master Asia's powers were hilarious. Straight up took out 100s of Zakus with Domons headband, which made zero sense and I love it. Then I watched endless waltz, 00, and unicorn and realized that G Gundam universe was so much peaceful than the UC arcs.
I like that the factions aren't just the good guys vs the bad guys. the real world isn't that simple, so having some grey areas, and some layers makes it more interesting.
That's one of the many reasons why I love most of the Gundam Anime, for that depth and complexity. Not really a fan of the kid versions . I prefer more serious Gundam series.
G Gundam was my favorite Gundam show as a kid because of the unique designs and the new way they operated the mobile suits. Sad to know now not everybody felt the same way. Seeing some of those suits brought back amazing memories of trips to Toys R Us 😂
The majority of Gundam fans are gatekeeping incels. There kinda like the veteran soulsborne fans lonely socially inept and their personality is solely Gundam
@@rushpatriot2866 Thats honestly really sad. These franchises were made to unite nerds and introverts into social communities open to any one interested but instead we just divide our selves even more based on what kind of robot toy you like better
Long time Gundam fan here. 1. Universal Century is high art. Greatest of classic storytelling ever. 2. Correction Number 1: The Gundam in Char's Counterattack is called the "Nu Gundam", but they spell it with that stylized V symbol. 3. Correction 2: 00 and Gunpla Builders are not connected in anyway. Edit: Thanks to a comment, the V is the Greek letter for Nu.
to be honest I never got into Gundam until I watched Mobile Suit Gundam : the Origin and I thought it was pretty good , so I might have missed out alot , maybe I need to start appreciating it even more
The Origin is good because the original series is good, so if you can deal with some old animation (cleans up well in the remasters), I'd say check out the original series or at least the trilogy movies that did a great job of condensing the story for an arguably better experience
I still think the original Gundam is one of the best pieces of pop culture media Japan has ever produced, and is a major, if not the major reason, Japanese pop culture is a major player in the world today. It was one of the first original anime to gain a large adult following. Countless creators were inspired to become creators by it. Countless people became engineers due to Gundam. Even to this day the story holds up wonderfully. There are so many themes touched upon and explored in sensible and realistic manner. Its characters to this day are iconic and Char is an absolute legend of a character. Even in a head-to-head comparision between Star Wars and Gundam Star Wars comes off as hopelessly simplistic and juvenile. Gundam shows scenes like competency not immediately translating into leadership ability with Mirai struggling to take over for Bright. Gundam shows what it feels like to become estranged from your parents due to growing up in completely different circumstances. It has interesting and unexpected character development like Amuro estranging himself from Fraw Bow due to his rising esteem and responsibilites. It has a tragic and interesting Romance in Lalah and Char. Kai and Miharu's story were excellently directed. Yeah, everybody knows that the original Gundam was not the first serious anime or the first one with mature themes, but it executed so many different ones so wonderfully, with good art, good direction, iconic voice acting, iconic art. To this day I still think Gundam is hopelessly underrated in the West and it's insane to see that for a long time even some of the mediocre OVAs like Stardust Memory were more popular here
"Vee-Gundam" "Gundam Zero-Zero" You haven't watched these, have you? Edit: Find me one instance where Setsuna F Seiei calls it ‘Zero Zero Gundam’ or ‘Zero Zero Quanta’ and I’ll edit this comment to apologize and admit you’re right.
Turn A Gundam is my personal favorite. The relaxed, somewhat melancholic but hopefull tone, extremly likeable main character, great supporting cast (Harry Ord is still my favorite Char clone, or Quattro clone if being specific), beautiful backgrounds, interesting setting inspired by early 20th century America, unique mecha design (rest in peace Syd Mead) and some of the best goddamn music in not just Gundam, but in all of anime (thank you Yoko Kanno) and touching, powerful story all come together to create wonderful and extremly humane tale of war and growing past our bloodstained history.
@lenni marjomaa - you saved me from writing basically the exact same thing. The only other anime I own multiple soundtrack albums for Is Ghost In the Shell: SAC, which of course is more Yoko Kanno audio bliss. And we'd be remiss if we didn't mention Corin Nander - a man that's fought Gundams for possibly thousands of years.
I like that the original Gundam had a reason for some random kid using the giant robot. His father designed it in a top secret base where the whole family had to live. He was around technology constantly while growing up. There was an instruction manual. And finally, the gundam had a learning computer that would aide the pilot. The rest of the series and their copycats never gave such a good reason.
2 years late.. i mean a good chunk of (main)gundam shows feature Protagonists who already trained to pilot Mobile suits(Wing, 00, Witch(arguably age iirc, way to long since i watched AGE) or in for example IBOs case used a interface that was designed to make piloting mobile suits simpler while also being a child soldier used to piloting mobile weapons). the Newtypes that pilot gundams out of nowhere are a bit of an "you cant fault it really"(so Zeta, ZZ iirc, and unicorn(and Banagher at least had acess to mini mobile suits so at least the basics where familiar(also its also the whole "dad build it in secret base" thing again) as an example, and iirc After war gundam X as well) SEED, well SEED is wonky, except Kira yamato every other Mobile suit/gundam pilot was trained to pilot mobile suits or similiar machinery, and Kira falls into the "newtype excuse". overall more shows then not give a pretty valid reasson for the pilot being able to pilot the suit
@@spartanK42 im not defending seed, seed has its "interesting" faults(the whole "rewriting an entire OS while its running" bit at the start always makes me laugh regardless of how often i see it) but it did what it wanted to do pretty well(be basicaly a "new" version of 0079) seed destiny on the other hand
@@weberman173 Kamile and Banagher studied the basics of mobile suits from their schools, specially for Banagher, but is implied that Kamile was involved with that too in his school. Judau you can say that he knows some basic stuff because of the machines he operates to salvage parts in space. But yeah, I don't think is the "Kids pilots mobile suits out of nowhere" is much worse in AU than UC shows.
I used to love Gundam seed destiny, gundam meister and The one with the unicorn gundam but after finishing Barbatos Gundam, damn it hit me... Even if Barbatos wasnt that strong of a gundam, because of its pilot Mika it became so powerful that it exceed it's limit... With a good background story and an incredible ending.. I'm in love with barbatos gundam atm.. I also love the looks of it
@@ahmedhamdi9526 yeah it was sad, but it completed the themes of the show well, and emotionally connected well. I love it cause it told a great story, even if im sad while watching it.
Dude iron blooded orphans goes soooo hard, i dont know if i like it more then seed and destiny but if anything its equal to them but jeeez its so dark and such an amazing story
Wait what do you mean “because of its pilot Mika”? I thought Mika was the strongest to use the Gundam to its fullest. Am I missing something on how Mika should’ve used the Gundam when compared to the other main characters in the franchise?
Seed was the first anime I watched all the way through when I was 11. It still holds a place in my heart and I own all of the DVDs. I've seen MANY of the other Gundams series but nothing hits me as much as Seed and Destiny
I fall into that 2000 Gundam Wing fan group. I was 10 years old and I looked forward to watching Toonami everyday after school. Wish I had kept my old figures.
Iron-Blooded Orphans was the first Gundam I felt connected to. Just everything about it would bring newcomers into loving the Gundam series. There's a lot of Gundams to sift through and I probably will never get the chance to watch them all in their entirety but IBO has so much more to offer.
Problem with that is that IBO creates drama for it's fans with the annoyingly overplayed death of 'biscuit' and wiping out the protagonists with next to zero antagonist resolution I.E. dropping rods of god on them from orbit while they rack on a nondescript amount of 'trash-mob' kills, not to mention the 'weird' relationship(s) Mikazuki has which takes you straight out of immersion. Also IBO creates the nuance that the series is based on whole universes which are sparsely explored or connected with. We're given the Barbatos Gundam but we never have any closure about it's capabilities or even it's odd 'spirit' that seems to communicate with Mikazuki. How come the other Gundam didn't talk with Akihiro? Hell, why didn't we even 'use' the new Gundam which apparently has an extreme amount of firepower?! Ironic much?! I think Thunderbolt would be best for introducing a new audience. We learn about the main factions and how both can be right/wrong simultaneously. The combat is raw, unfiltered, immersive and real. It's amazing how it's not a Gundam show in respect to how similar it would be to other a-tier media but it's also Gundam is essence. How a person responds to Thunderbolt would be a good indication of another series they might like. Gundam 00 if they like Gundams. 08th mobile suit for the combat. Origins for the atmosphere. Etc. IBO is too controversial to be able to recommend it outright as it depends on previous Gundam exposure for a lot of it's 'setup'. It would be confusing being exposed to Gundams and Alaya Vijnaya with no knowledge of what they actually mean in the universe.
27 year old here remember seeing clips of some gundam on adult swim as a baby, no clue on the actual story but so far IBO has been a banger with the gundam battles
@Siti Nurulhuda Md Yunus Thats nothing if you want character death i suggest watching zeta gundam as its like game of thrones, characters will die left and right.

They'll crucify you for saying that. If the Gundams don't look like flying bricks and McDonald's toys they consider it bad. The Gundam fans are just as bad as my hero fans they get heated if you don't agree with them. They pretty much want the og series rehashed over and over again with old ass animation
20:20 funny you mention Metal Gear. Cause Gato's Japanese VA is the VA for Snake in Japanese! Also Berine from 0080* in the Dub was voiced by David Hayter Another fun fact. Kojima really loves Gundam!
this is why i clicked. tryna see where seed, ibo, 00, and witch fit in. looks like I've gone my whole like unaware of the main uc timeline lol. looks like I'll be avoiding it too. it looks oversaturated.
@3XZDgg not really, there's a main backbone of shows and movies, and everything else are just fun little side additions that you don't need to see to get the full story. It's where some of the best gundam content is. Writing it all off as something as undefined as "oversaturated" does a really disservice to the universe. I swear, each show is more concerned with telling an understandable and complete story than filling out gaps in the lore, especially the series earlier in the timeline
Social Distancing and this was the best use of 69+ minutes of my life... besides, Tim is hysterical in his delivery. Oh the pronunciations of so much in this is driving me nuts, it's a good video at least lol Edit: Actually just got to the part of F91 and the information given on how it came to be a bit inaccurate to say the least. It was planned to be a full fledged series and only became a film after staff disputes. They had about 13 episodes penned and compiled them into a film. Not at all that it was planned to be 13 episodes and a film. That was a bit interesting to completely miss and change, I'm just going to guess this was recorded all in one go and somewhere along the line he mixed things up.
Tim, you're a godsend. I've been looking for a primer for the Gundam series/timeline for the last 5 years, with nobody being able to consistently answer "which Gundam series should I start with?" Or "Which series are important to understanding the overall theme and story of Gundam?" And here you are, going above and beyond both of those question. Thank you so much.
You can start with any of the alternate universe Gundam shows as they are part of their own story. There are many Mecha anime out there with their own unique stories that many shonen anime take inspiration from.
as shown by the chart at the end, the franchise is deceptive, it is huungous but has many main entry points to get inside. you can watch any of those timelines in any order however I believe the general consensus would be to watch 00, wing or Iron Blooded Orphans as one's first. those 3 are fairly well recieved with little detracting from them, others are watchable though carry parts the fandom is not very fond of either through association or within
At NYCC November '19, when asked about UC NEXT and whether Crossbone would occur... Tomino smiled I can't talk, but it could happen. The room exploded.
If they really go with this 100 project, a remake of f91 and crossbone adaption are really a possibility. Also, a remake of the one year war is probably on the table too
I remember me being a kid, watching the cartoonish Gundam. I loved it, but didn't know the name of the series. Then I moved to an European country, where Anime wasn't on TV, and now I've finally found the Gundam I've been searching for the last 3 years
Gundam wing’s pilot names are kind of hilarious. It’s Heero (he’s the hero, so the name fits), Duo (as in 2), Trowa (as in 3), Quatre (as in 4), and then just Wu Fei.
Crazy to think that _Gundam_ as a franchise is going to be half a century in 10 years. 4:43 Char (シャア) is actually pronounced 'Sha' is you want to be nit picky and go with the original Japanese name. 18:18 Yes. "IV" is four. 22:58 YES! Mobile Fighter G Gundam is still one of my top Gundam series. 26:24 New Mobile Report Gundam Wing is probably the series that most people in North America was first introduced to the world of Gundam. 29:26 ~ 29:35 These are the variants from New Mobile Report Gundam Wing Endless Waltz: Glory of the Losers. 31:48 After War Gundam X is also one of my top Gundam series. 33:43 It was a 3 episode OVA which later was compiled into a movie. 33:58 As mentioned, these are "new" mobile suits. They're redesigns of the Gundams from the latter portion of the _Wing_ TV anime. 38:22 The Cosmic Era is (again) part of my top Gundam series. Of course this includes Mobile Suit Gundam Seed and Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Destiny. I'm not a fan of Astray or Stargazer though. 44:28 *THIS* is my far my most favorite. Mobile Suit Gundam 00. 47:48 Ah~ Unicorn. Always with the Unicorn series. 😐 51:52 I remember when they first unveiled the movie. So good~ 53:39 I know many people didn't like this series, but I thought it was good. It's just too bad the MG line up is TBA still. 55:22 Gundam Build Fighters is just too good. Gundam Build Fighters Try was good, but not as good. Gundam Build Divers and Gundam Build Divers RE: Rise were a little worse. Gundam Build Divers RE: Rise (2nd Season) ... I hope it's good. 57:56 This series... 🤮 59:57 I think that the _Origins_ series is going to be good for those who have some interest in the UC time line but maybe not so much with the existing works as they are quite old. For those fans, I hope they continue with it and redo Zeta, ZZ, Char's Counterattack, etc. 1:01:36 Mobile Suit Gundam Iron Blooded Orphans *is a must watch* for anyone into Gundam and/or into anime. It's good... *Really Good* 1:03:25 Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt is beloved by many people. I think the jazz music is very unique. 1:05:13 I guess they couldn't resist the urge of spamming more _Unicorn_ related series. 1:06:29 Isn't the title supposed to be Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway's Flash? The Japanese title is 機動戦士ガンダム 閃光のハサウェイ (Kidou Senshi Gandamu Senkou No Hasauei) . Why did they get rid of the _Flash_ part in the name? 🤔 1:07:26 😲 Yea. I think this pretty much shows why many people are overwhelmed when asked to watch Gundam. They don't know where to start and it doesn't help that the _original_ timeline (UC...Universal Century) is heavily packed & stuffed with tons of series. I wouldn't be surprised if they redo all of the older UC series.
Nearly most of the Gundam series r really good, great, or outstanding unless we're talking about Doozy Bots & a few others, but each series has its likes & dislikes, which varies between fans.
G Gundam is ironically one of the best Gundam series out there. It doesn't have that militaristic feel and sci-fi but it's such a good story and martial artist fans instantly like this one.
Gundam Wing is still my favourite to this day i still remember saving up all my school lunch allowance just to buy one of the gundam model at a time i've already collected the entire HG set building Gundam is my favourite hobby before i moved on to building PC lmfao
This was an effort worthy of commendation. Having seen THE ENTIRE 'Canon'* meta-franchise up until late 2016, it was fun to have a nice, long look back over the shoulder at allll that had transpired since the beginning. Took me about 4 straight years (2009-2013) to watch the bulk of it, but MOST of it was well worth the watch. Oddly enough, one of my favorite memories of that marathon was streaming the DUB of Zeta Gundam on Crunchyroll before it disappeared, with the same voice cast from 0079, so that was a nice bit of added continuity. (*-Canon meaning no SD series, skip the retconning Zeta Gundam compilation movies, and banish all thoughts of G-Saviour (which I'm surprised you didn't mention, being part of the UC timeline).) For your NEXT challenge, Tim: Explain the Girai Family Tree as mentioned in the Tenchi meta-franchise. Or each creator's version of canon series for said franchise. Should take about the same runtime, I think...
NEAT! Now I can introduce friends to Gundam without sounding too crazy myself! Just a few nitpicks on pronunciation some might've pointed out already: - 10:25 ZZ's protagonist, Judau i typically hear pronounced as 'Joo-Dao' not 'Juday-oh' - 12:47 Amuro's mobile suit in Counterattack: Nu Gundam, not V (misread from the Greek symbol v, but V Gundam is associated with Victory Gundam!) - 44:38 Gundam 00, supposed to be 'Double-O' was fine on its first mention, - 51:51 but was incorrectly referred to as 'Zero Zero' multiple times on the Trailblazer bit - 53:30 Qan[T], I realize is pronounced awkwardly for comedic relief too xD but is known as the 'Quanta'. Otherwise, I love this video! Thank you Tim Lyu, for a wonderful representation on the multiple animated timelines so far. Loud round of applause from Gundam & Gunpla fans worldwide!
I started with Iron Blooded Orphans and really loved it. After building some Gunplas, watchting the new Witch from Mercury anime, i also started the journey from the beginning, having finished the 79 Gundam and being in the middle of Zeta right now. It will still take a lot of time until i will finish all of it but i look forward to it XD It is just so much, with series having 40-50 episodes each and tons of ovas and movies :P
I was always mystified by Gundam; for years! My main reference was Keroro Gunso. The main franchise for Gundam wasn't particularly exciting but I admit I wanted to know a bit more without committing to seeing all the series. This video was greatly appreciated - you've condensed generations of intricate pop-culture in such an awesome video. Kudos! and Thanks!

For those of you who are curious about Tomino's other works, you'd best not watch Zambot 3. It is relentless TRAGIC. Like, 'makes Gundam look like Gurren Lagann' tragic. Slightly less tragic is Dunbine, but only slightly. But those are nothing compare to Tomino's other opus, Space Runaway Ideon. Not for nothing was Tomino's nickname "Kill 'em All".
Gundam Wing is the show that made me fall in love with Mecha when I was a kid, though apart from the original Gundam series, I find I just can't get into the rest of the Gundam shows, Hathaway seems interesting though.
If you like wing try 00. It's pretty much a modern version of wing and a good bit better and just as "edgy" as wing lol and if you want to watch hathaway youll probably need to watch 079 (original gundam) and chars counter attack as its a sequel to those essentially. but for 079 you can watch the movie trilogy and then CCA is just a movie as well.
At 3:10 I never knew the name of this dam cartoon. I watched it as a young boy in the early 80s a long with Voltron and silverhawks. You just did me a big favor.
Pretty sure everyone knows what it is. I mean probably not the newest generation but even gen z knows what it is. Ironicly I became aware of it's existence threw a show about alien frogs trying and failing to invade earth heh.

I’m just gettin into gundam. I’ve always wanted to jump in but was unable to find the original so I started with Mobile Fighter G Gundam and loved it. I’m asking for everyone’s best recommendations please as I’d love to get more into it
Be warned that Fighter G Gundam is probably the most different out of the entire Gundam universe. I'm glad you loved it, and you may love other Gundam series, but sadly, your love of G Gundam will be in no way indicative if you'll love any of the other series. Gundam UC is short, with only 7 episodes on Netflix and probably a good place to start with little investment required.
I loved Gundam AGE, especially with its storytelling. Gundam 00, The Cosmic Era Series, and Unicorn are my favorites. I'm currently enjoying The Witch from Mercury. I'm also looking forward to more about Hathaway.
I know it´s about anime, but one of my favorite stories in Gundam is Gundam Wing ep. O. It´s a manga, and it relates the story of how the pilots got to the point where they were willing to be in operation meteor. Loved Heero Yuy story and where he got his name. Good video, big bro.
currently, I think that The: Origin and the Thunderbolt are a great series for newcomers to start with. it's short, engaging, fun, and doesn't really require prior knowledge about gundam. The: Origin I would recommend this for its story. people would get to know about Char and how the conflict between the federation & zeon erupt in an engaging way. making them to not be so clueless about the federation and zeon when starting another gundam series. Thunderbolt I recommend this for its attractive visuals. The series shows that the add-on of these mobile suits do have a reason and functionality to it, it isn't a mere fashion. I would even go as far to say that this is how a giant robot and spaceship battle supposed to move and fight. in short, it is a great mecha eye-candy
im a newcomer and i watched the: origin, but tbh halfway through things got confusing and i dont even understand what "char's" goal is. it was an interesting watch but if this is best for newcomers.... hmmmm...
@@captainsoarineagle what Char did basically is laying the groundwork for his revenge against the Zabi family. anyway, if Origin isn't to your liking, I do hope you can still try a standalone Gundam series, The Iron Blooded Orphan. It is easier to follow while still being engagingly fun.
I first watched this video when I bought my first RX kit. Now I have 35 kits and counting and I've seen IBO plus the original 1980's show. God I love this universe.
Gundam Seed and Gundam Seed Destiny were 2 of my favourite animes when I was 11 (2007). Haven't really watched the series since but I've been thinking of revisiting it. Thanks for filling us in on the lore!
Thank you so much for explaining all the timelines. I recently got into watching gundam through iron blood orphans and then the origin ova's. I was so confused where the post disaster in I.B.O. fit into the U.C. timeline and dreaded watching anymore U.C.. Now I know I don't have to and I can dip into gundam with timelines and series I enjoy. None of which ever have to be U.C. timeline ever again. Thank you so much!.
always felt like Star Wars, Star Trek, Fate and Gundam are the same thing: big/huge fanbase of a series/media that has a cultural impact, but i will probably never get into because there's a LOT of stuff to watch/read/do
That first run of Gundam Wing on the Toonami's Midnight Run was excellent, and got me into anime. And I dig pretty much all the gundam series. They tend to be well written, with good character development, and amazing action scenes. (Though the ultra realism of FMP design and physics does hold a place in my heart.)
'cause I' m next to my 50th birthday, I'm a fan of the U.C. time-line. Other time lines are pretty confusing for me, but also understand that it's so important for the creators to create and grow more generations of fans. Thanks for the explation. Good job done.
So I’ve just gotten into gundam recently, I was born in 2002. My dads only real gundam is the main one from gundam seed which he still has. Now in 2020 I got into gunpla with my first being the strike freedom from gundam seed. Now I’m hooked into building it with my second built and now moving onto my third after first seeing my dads gunpla model over 6 years ago and him being supportive over my strike freedom. So to me this is just great to learn about since I never really watch gundam properly and only knowing the connection from the box of mine and my father stating it was from seed and a google leading me to this video😊😊
@@zaccheusmckibbens7293 I really love gundam man but I just couldn't stand any of the characters, any of the writing tropes, I couldn't stand anything about the show. If orga cared about his little friends he'd realize he was getting them all killed and he would've dropped them off somewhere where they would've had a chance at a better life. Mikazuki was the only character that made sense going along with orga.
As someone who grew up watching first Gundam Wing and then Gundam 0079 on Toonami, Gundam brings back fond memories of running home from school in order to watch it. I went on to join the military and drove a tank because unfortunately modern militaries haven't invented mobile suits yet. They're working on it though, I'm sure of it. But also, take it from me, War is Hell.
I came for her a five minute explanation of Gundam as a franchise but got stuck in a 2 hour deep dive yet very well done summary of the ENTIRE franchise
If you're just getting onto Gundam or want to get, I would recomend firstly watching first season of Iron Blooded Orphans, and seeing if you like it. Alternatively, try Gundam Origins OVA/anime. I reckon those two are most accessible. After either, I would recomend giving read to Gundam Origins manga or watching the first series, though even I admit it doesn't necessarily hold up well, so I would recomend the Gundam Origins manga before. It tells the same story as firs series, but looks great. After that, you can basically proceed chronologically, with Zeta Gundam and Char's Counterattack, along with some OVA series, like War in The Pocket (personal favorite) and The 08th MS Team , maybe dipping into some alternate timelines as well, like G-Gundam (absolutely silly but highly entertaining). I hafta recomend leaving Turn A Gundam last though. It's my own favorite, but works best as last one. Happy watching, don't let your soul be weight down by gravity!
I started with the original series and although most other series are better than it it still has my favorite character, Job John, and three of the best scenes in all of Gundam.
@@newwaveplus Honestly, most alternate universes are pretty good place to start, I'm just U.C fan so I might be bit biased. Haven't personally seen 00 so I can't comment on it, but I'll take your word for it.
From purely story-telling stand point, original is still one the best, propably my favorite after Turn A. I've just noticed that it's kind hard to convince people to watch original from 79 these days. But Dozle Zabi's last stand with Big Zam might still be my favorite scene in all of Gundam. Either that or Lotan transporting cows in Turn A.

2 years late.. i mean
a good chunk of (main)gundam shows feature Protagonists who already trained to pilot Mobile suits(Wing, 00, Witch(arguably age iirc, way to long since i watched AGE) or in for example IBOs case used a interface that was designed to make piloting mobile suits simpler while also being a child soldier used to piloting mobile weapons).
the Newtypes that pilot gundams out of nowhere are a bit of an "you cant fault it really"(so Zeta, ZZ iirc, and unicorn(and Banagher at least had acess to mini mobile suits so at least the basics where familiar(also its also the whole "dad build it in secret base" thing again) as an example, and iirc After war gundam X as well)
SEED, well SEED is wonky, except Kira yamato every other Mobile suit/gundam pilot was trained to pilot mobile suits or similiar machinery, and Kira falls into the "newtype excuse".
overall more shows then not give a pretty valid reasson for the pilot being able to pilot the suit

I knew the Gundam franchise was expansive but damn it's bigger than I realized.
He missed some stuff.
Iron-Blooded Orphans was the first Gundam I felt connected to. Just everything about it would bring newcomers into loving the Gundam series. There's a lot of Gundams to sift through and I probably will never get the chance to watch them all in their entirety but IBO has so much more to offer.
Iron-Blooded Orphans was the first i watched in a very long time the last gundam show i watched was gundam wing
Also Mobile Fighter G Gundam can act as a good entry point for someone fond of Super Robots.
I like the one where they try and create peace through terrorism it was the closest to real life.
Man, I JUST finished IBO and atm, Barbatos is definitely my favorite Gundam design.

@@Shakukirai You can mispronounce something without reading a script. You can know something intimately and put it in a script so you say what you mean to say clearly.
Basically your argument holds no water other than a wild assumption that you cannot know.
@@Gustav_Kuriga idk man but someone who knows about Gihren's Greed shouldn'tve butchered Qant [t] and Nu Gundam names lol
@@Shakukirai I have several hundred hours in Gihren's Greed Menace of Axis V and I couldn't tell you how to pronounce Qant. If you think you're such a special know it all snowflake though, I can direct you to the guys doing the english fan patch for the game. I'm sure they'd LOVE to hear all about your perfect pronunciations.
Thank you for providing this. I'm a huge Gundam fan that lost time to indulge as I've gotten older. This has provided so much info on stories I need to catch up on.
Oh the pronunciations of so much in this is driving me nuts, it's a good video at least lol
Edit: Actually just got to the part of F91 and the information given on how it came to be a bit inaccurate to say the least.
Then there's me wondering why I'm watching this, I dont even watch gundum.
AY THAT DONT MATTER! THANKS FOR WATCHIN BENJAMIN!!!!!!!
Don't bother. Watch Escaflowne or Gunbuster instead.
Onii-chan is watching you Yooo Escaflowne is lowkey fire ngl
You can start with any of the alternate universe Gundam shows as they are part of their own story. There are many Mecha anime out there with their own unique stories that many shonen anime take inspiration from.
as shown by the chart at the end, the franchise is deceptive, it is huungous but has many main entry points to get inside. you can watch any of those timelines in any order however I believe the general consensus would be to watch 00, wing or Iron Blooded Orphans as one's first. those 3 are fairly well recieved with little detracting from them, others are watchable though carry parts the fandom is not very fond of either through association or within
Don't you dare give me hope for a crossbone Gundam adaptation, I can't handle it
At NYCC November '19, when asked about UC NEXT and whether Crossbone would occur... Tomino smiled I can't talk, but it could happen. The room exploded.
We’d need a remake of F91, the “movie” doesn’t do that story justice.
Would rather they not what with all the silly shit Hasegawa likes to shove in.
Me, a MASSIVE Gundam See Astray fan: Haha, at least you were given hope.
If they really go with this 100 project, a remake of f91 and crossbone adaption are really a possibility. Also, a remake of the one year war is probably on the table too
I just got into Gundam a week ago and im hooked on the shows and movies and of course, the models
I remember me being a kid, watching the cartoonish Gundam. I loved it, but didn't know the name of the series. Then I moved to an European country, where Anime wasn't on TV, and now I've finally found the Gundam I've been searching for the last 3 years
His pronunciations for names are all over the place. Both frustrating and funny 😩😑😂
Bro! I let Judeau go, and Londo Ball was a bit rough but V Gundam sent me...
Its like he hasn't even watched any.
@@Revelation6_7-8 he's doing it on purpose pretty sure.

Gundam wing’s pilot names are kind of hilarious. It’s Heero (he’s the hero, so the name fits), Duo (as in 2), Trowa (as in 3), Quatre (as in 4), and then just Wu Fei.
well, wu is 5 so
wu (5 in Traditional Chinese, according to Google translate. Correct me if I'm wrong.)
fei (five. Come on. It gives away)
Crazy to think that _Gundam_ as a franchise is going to be half a century in 10 years.

Char (シャア) is actually pronounced 'Sha' is you want to be nit picky and go with the original Japanese name.
18:18
Yes. "IV" is four.
22:58
YES!
Mobile Fighter G Gundam is still one of my top Gundam series.
26:24
New Mobile Report Gundam Wing is probably the series that most people in North America was first introduced to the world of Gundam.
29:26 ~ 29:35
These are the variants from New Mobile Report Gundam Wing Endless Waltz: Glory of the Losers.
31:48
After War Gundam X is also one of my top Gundam series.
33:43
It was a 3 episode OVA which later was compiled into a movie.
33:58
As mentioned, these are "new" mobile suits.
They're redesigns of the Gundams from the latter portion of the _Wing_ TV anime.
38:22
The Cosmic Era is (again) part of my top Gundam series.
Of course this includes Mobile Suit Gundam Seed and Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Destiny.
I'm not a fan of Astray or Stargazer though.

*THIS* is my far my most favorite.
Mobile Suit Gundam 00.
47:48
Ah~ Unicorn. Always with the Unicorn series. 😐
51:52
I remember when they first unveiled the movie.
So good~
53:39
I know many people didn't like this series, but I thought it was good.
It's just too bad the MG line up is TBA still.
55:22
Gundam Build Fighters is just too good.
Gundam Build Fighters Try was good, but not as good.
Gundam Build Divers and Gundam Build Divers RE: Rise were a little worse.
Gundam Build Divers RE: Rise (2nd Season) ... I hope it's good.
57:56
This series... 🤮
59:57
I think that the _Origins_ series is going to be good for those who have some interest in the UC time line but maybe not so much with the existing works as they are quite old.
For those fans, I hope they continue with it and redo Zeta, ZZ, Char's Counterattack, etc.
1:01:36
Mobile Suit Gundam Iron Blooded Orphans *is a must watch* for anyone into Gundam and/or into anime.
It's good... *Really Good*
1:03:25
Mobile Suit Gundam Thunderbolt is beloved by many people.
I think the jazz music is very unique.
1:05:13
I guess they couldn't resist the urge of spamming more _Unicorn_ related series.
1:06:29
Isn't the title supposed to be Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway's Flash?
The Japanese title is 機動戦士ガンダム 閃光のハサウェイ (Kidou Senshi Gandamu Senkou No Hasauei)
. Why did they get rid of the _Flash_ part in the name? 🤔
1:07:26
😲
Yea.
Fun fact: Tomino named Char Aznable after French singer Charles Aznavour.
Char is pronounced Char as in "Charred" bro, no one has pronounced it "Sha" since the trilogy dub or if you have a Boston accent
@@Griff00 in french ch is pronounced as sh, and consider the origin of Char's name, it should be pronounced as such
Nearly most of the Gundam series r really good, great, or outstanding unless we're talking about Doozy Bots & a few others, but each series has its likes & dislikes, which varies between fans.
And yes, Gundam 00 is one of the best series ever, & my favorite thus far.
G Gundam is ironically one of the best Gundam series out there. It doesn't have that militaristic feel and sci-fi but it's such a good story and martial artist fans instantly like this one.
Gundam Wing is still my favourite to this day
i still remember saving up all my school lunch allowance just to buy one of the gundam model at a time
i've already collected the entire HG set
building Gundam is my favourite hobby before i moved on to building PC lmfao
This was an effort worthy of commendation. Having seen THE ENTIRE 'Canon'* meta-franchise up until late 2016, it was fun to have a nice, long look back over the shoulder at allll that had transpired since the beginning. Took me about 4 straight years (2009-2013) to watch the bulk of it, but MOST of it was well worth the watch. Oddly enough, one of my favorite memories of that marathon was streaming the DUB of Zeta Gundam on Crunchyroll before it disappeared, with the same voice cast from 0079, so that was a nice bit of added continuity. (*-Canon meaning no SD series, skip the retconning Zeta Gundam compilation movies, and banish all thoughts of G-Saviour (which I'm surprised you didn't mention, being part of the UC timeline).)
For your NEXT challenge, Tim: Explain the Girai Family Tree as mentioned in the Tenchi meta-franchise. Or each creator's version of canon series for said franchise. Should take about the same runtime, I think...
NEAT! Now I can introduce friends to Gundam without sounding too crazy myself!
Just a few nitpicks on pronunciation some might've pointed out already:
- 10:25 ZZ's protagonist, Judau i typically hear pronounced as 'Joo-Dao' not 'Juday-oh'
- 12:47 Amuro's mobile suit in Counterattack: Nu Gundam, not V (misread from the Greek symbol v, but V Gundam is associated with Victory Gundam!)
- 44:38 Gundam 00, supposed to be 'Double-O' was fine on its first mention,
- 51:51 but was incorrectly referred to as 'Zero Zero' multiple times on the Trailblazer bit
- 53:30 Qan[T], I realize is pronounced awkwardly for comedic relief too xD but is known as the 'Quanta'.
Otherwise, I love this video! Thank you Tim Lyu, for a wonderful representation on the multiple animated timelines so far. Loud round of applause from Gundam & Gunpla fans worldwide!
and it is Kamille BIDAN, not BIDEN!
bruh you're really gonna nitpick on THIS man for pronunciation?
I started with Iron Blooded Orphans and really loved it. After building some Gunplas, watchting the new Witch from Mercury anime, i also started the journey from the beginning, having finished the 79 Gundam and being in the middle of Zeta right now. It will still take a lot of time until i will finish all of it but i look forward to it XD It is just so much, with series having 40-50 episodes each and tons of ovas and movies :P

I love this series so fucking much and I hate that not many people knows it.

I’m asking for everyone’s best recommendations please as I’d love to get more into it
Gundam : The Origin
Gundam original series.
Iron blooded Orphans
Gundam Thunderbolt

Gundam 00
Be warned that Fighter G Gundam is probably the most different out of the entire Gundam universe. I'm glad you loved it, and you may love other Gundam series, but sadly, your love of G Gundam will be in no way indicative if you'll love any of the other series. Gundam UC is short, with only 7 episodes on Netflix and probably a good place to start with little investment required.
seed and destiny are fucking amazing
I loved Gundam AGE, especially with its storytelling. Gundam 00, The Cosmic Era Series, and Unicorn are my favorites. I'm currently enjoying The Witch from Mercury. I'm also looking forward to more about Hathaway.
I know it´s about anime, but one of my favorite stories in Gundam is Gundam Wing ep. O. It´s a manga, and it relates the story of how the pilots got to the point where they were willing to be in operation meteor. Loved Heero Yuy story and where he got his name. Good video, big bro.
Had no idea this was a thing
currently, I think that The: Origin and the Thunderbolt are a great series for newcomers to start with. it's short, engaging, fun, and doesn't really require prior knowledge about gundam.
The: Origin
I would recommend this for its story. people would get to know about Char and how the conflict between the federation & zeon erupt in an engaging way. making them to not be so clueless about the federation and zeon when starting another gundam series.
Thunderbolt
I recommend this for its attractive visuals. The series shows that the add-on of these mobile suits do have a reason and functionality to it, it isn't a mere fashion. I would even go as far to say that this is how a giant robot and spaceship battle supposed to move and fight. in short, it is a great mecha eye-candy
im a newcomer and i watched the: origin, but tbh halfway through things got confusing and i dont even understand what "char's" goal is. it was an interesting watch but if this is best for newcomers.... hmmmm...
Jordans Monkey have you watched thunderbolt?
@@captainsoarineagle what Char did basically is laying the groundwork for his revenge against the Zabi family. anyway, if Origin isn't to your liking, I do hope you can still try a standalone Gundam series, The Iron Blooded Orphan. It is easier to follow while still being engagingly fun.
I first watched this video when I bought my first RX kit. Now I have 35 kits and counting and I've seen IBO plus the original 1980's show. God I love this universe.

00 would also be a nice place to start
