    One tip, you can associate your phone with your driver profile so you never have to choose the "right" profile when you enter the car. This can be done by setting the correct profile, then go to the Locks screen and find the phone who has this profile. Long press the phone, and it will associate the profile with that phone. Do this for each phone and the correct profile will load when you enter your car. Also, you can probably cut an hour from your Northern CA road trips. From your video, it appears that you charge to 90% at the Supercharger. From 70% to 90% takes forever. You should be planning your trips from Supercharger to Supercharger. When you get to your first Supercharger stop, navigate to the next Supercharger and arrive with 10-15% charge. You will probably reduce the time by 15-20 mins at each Supercharger. 3 Superchargers Stops * 20 mins = 1 hour saved.

      This! Great tip! I literally just did a road trip 2 days ago from Dallas, TX to Destin, FL, and honestly it’s a leaning curve on how to effectively supercharge. I have had my long range model 3 since 2018, and on my first road trip (all around TX) and when I went to Arkansas from Dallas, I was WAY too conservative. I was super worried about running out of charge, so I did charge almost all the way up. NEVER AGAIN. You are absolutely correct, the way charging works, charging when you have less battery is way faster than charging when you battery is almost full. Therefore in order to most effectively plan your charging stops, plug in your final destination and look at the supercharger stops along the way. Just make sure than whenever your reach the next super charger you will have more than 20% charge and you will be absolutely golden. ( yes the car does tell you on the screen how much charge you should have by the time you reach your next charging stop) Not to mention, not charging all the way makes your stops SO much faster and honestly I get in and out in like 20 minutes. PERFECT, that’s just enough time for potty and snacks. Hopefully this helps people stressed about range. Trust me, my family has 4 Tesla’s, 3 home chargers, travels a TON, and have had our cars for more than 4 years, and this is the best way to go. Y’all’ve got this! I honestly wouldn’t worry about charging at all.

      @@morgancaraway3941 happy to help. I honestly think that if everyone travelled like this, then the amount of cars at Superchargers would greatly reduce. Every time I use a Supercharger, it seems like I'm the last car to arrive at the Supercharger, and yet, the first car to unplug and leave. I know I'm not the only one doing road trips in my area. I see families parked at Superchargers for a very long time. It's in everyone's best interest to use this strategy for Supercharging, not only to save time, but to reduce traffic at Superchargers.

    Big tip: You want to make full use of the Energy app (this is what shows the range Tesla estimates for your car based on your driving habits). Tap the arrow at the bottom, it's in the same menu as the games and toybox. The "263 miles" comes from the EPA, not Tesla, and due to regulations they are legally required to advertise the car with the EPA rated range. Keep an eye on your efficiency. Swipe right below the car on the screen, and you will see your current efficiency in Wh/mile (you can swipe down for the trip meters and such). Efficiency is greatly affected by driving habits. Things like hard acceleration and going really fast can greatly reduce it. Might be worth looking at your driving habts and seeing if you're doing anything that hampers efficiency on those long trips (on short trips where you can charge right afterward anyway it doesn't matter so much). If you swipe left below the car it will tell you your tire pressures. Depending on what tires/wheels you have it could be different, but I have the 18" wheels, and my tires say to use 42psi cold (this is what they should be when you first start driving, pressure will increase a few PSI as you drive). Having pressure too high or too low will greatly effect efficiency too. The tire pressure monitoring system will show -- when the car has been sitting for awhile, so I have a digital tire pressure gauge and a 12V air pump in the trunk just in case.
    Another big thing: you're right in that you don't want to charge to 100% on a regular basis. But it is absolutely ok if you do it occasionally, in preparation for a road trip. When the car is charging, you will get several options at the bottom. One is "scheduled departure". You can set this to be a one time thing, or on a daily/weekly basis (feel free to play around with the options). If you set the charge to 100% with a scheduled departure set, the car will intelligently time its charging, so it hits max charge right before you leave, and also precondition the battery, which increases your efficiency when starting out on the trip by a lot. Otherwise if you say start at 90% and just leave without preconditioning, you are going to having pretty reduced effiency for the first 5-10 mintues or so, and that combined with only being 90% to begin with, is going to reduce your range a lot. You can also use scheduled departure if you say leave for work at the same time every day, even if you are only charging to your 90% "daily" level, that will also help efficiency. Also, make sure you are using the lighting bolt icon on your navigation when you stop at a supercharger. If you do this so that the car is aware you're going to stop to charge, it will precondition the battery as you get close to the supercharger, so charging will be faster.
    I recently made a trip in my sr+ (same as yours, but blue with black interior, and mine is about 3 months newer and is a vision-only model), that was 2 hours each way (another city to pick up a friend, then from there to an amusement park all day). This also counts the car sitting in the amusement park parking lot with sentry and cabin overheat protection running all day. I only had to stop at a supercharger once for 10 minutes on my way back, and I had 29% battery when I got back. I did pre-charge to 100% and use the scheduled departure option. By using some really efficient driving (using autopilot to draft semis even if it meant going 2-5mph under the speed limit), I got my efficiency to 197 Wh/mile on that trip.

    As a SR+ owner myself: Battery drainage is caused by sentry mode and how much you press on the accelerator to the floor. Phantom drain is also caused by how often you open the app to “wake up” the car as it connects via Bluetooth while it’s on “standby” (like a phone as you said). Just a thought.. If you have free charging at home, plug it in everyday so you can to enter a full set % charge (recommend for battery health also) and lastly... set your start charge time/mAh charge rate to start at a specific time at night at the pace you want it. Hope this helps!

    Also just a heads up, if you charger hop instead of siting at a charger for a long time to charge to 90% or 100% you save so much more time. When we go on road trips with my buddy's LR Model 3 we stop at superchargers for 10 - 15 minutes and then drive for about another 2 hours then stop and charge for another 10 - 15 minutes. Charging to 70% from 10% is way faster then charging from 20% to 100%. Pull into a charger with 5% to 10% and charge to 65% to 70%. It will save you so much time when road tripping a EV.

      @StormsparkPegasus 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There are a few things that weren't really mentioned though (FYI, I have this exact same car, only mine is blue with black interior, it's the 2021 vision-only refresh model). He said you shouldn't ever charge to 100%, and that's not necessarily true. You can charge to 100% as long as it is not on a daily basis, just for the occasional road trip. And if you do this, you should use the "scheduled departure" function on the car. It will regulate its charging so it hits 100% right before you leave, and it will also precondition the battery, which will add to your efficiency. Your efficiency (Wh/mile) is something you have to pay more attention to on the standard range+ than you do with the longer range versions. So if you are taking a long trip, you should avoid things like hard acceleration, and make sure you make the maximum use of regenerative braking. Also don't go too fast. I've made a couple multi-hour trips in my standard range+ (including an all day trip to another city 2 hours each way), and I only had to stop at a supercharger once (for a total of 10 minutes). It's all about planning your route, and efficiency. My best efficiency on a long trip so far is 197 Wh/mile (which is really good for this car), I got that by going about 2-3mph under the speed limit while drafting semis using TACC/autosteer with a set following distance.

      @StormsparkPegasus 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@shasta8523 I mean, you don't have to do all that...those are hypermiling techniques that work just as well on ICE vehicles. I personally only do that because I've found long trips are better if you relax. If you don't want to do that, you don't have to. But the things you SHOULD do is 1) set the charge to 100% before you take a road trip, using the scheduled departure function, 2) make sure you are making maximum use of regenerative braking, 3) don't do lots of hard acceleration when you're on a long trip, save that for the short in-town trips where efficiency doesn't matter so much.

I came close to buying a model 3 SR+ or base model Y recently but bought a Venza hybrid instead due to the range concerns. I just did my first road trip in my SR+ and I loved it. I would suggest watching the Out of Spec Motoring channel as he's got the road trip supercharging down to a science. You don't need to charge to 90% going from LA to the bay area. Best to run it down to 10% as you'll get your fastest charging rate when your battery is low. And if you have 1 year of free supercharging, I would suggest new buyers use someone else's code as those miles will expire before you can use them.

    Attention off-grid folks: :Tesla advises to keep your car plugged in when not in use )ie when you get home from work). But like me, what if you do NOT have a 110 service, I live off-grid in a house I built myself, There are separate and redundant systems for each area: living room kitchen, bathroom etc. I bought my long range model 3 on June 2, 2021 in Portland OR and charged it 100% in Bend Oregon. (356 miles) I live 135 miles east in Christmas Valley and arrived with 219 miles. Over the course of the next three days I drove less than 8 miles a day but every morning I showed a loss of an additional 20 miles. Tesla explained that one can never shut the Tesla off as there are numerous component that require power. I got a bit nervous as I only had 150 miles of range left and the nearest Supercharger was in Klamath Falls Oregon 130 miles west. I made it with 12 miles of range remaining. So range is an elusive number. It depends on your use of the air conditioner and how often you make it go super fast.
    Prior to purchasing my model 3 I asked all over the internet how I could use the sun to charge at home. (True, I could have gone a mile or so to a neighbor to charge overnight but elected not to.) So here is my solution: I bought 8 one hundred watt solar panels i wired in parallel to make 24 volts and then in series (four 24 volts) which cost about $800 with the cables and clamps. An MPPT charge controller accepting 12 or 24 volts which cost $279, two 12 volt deep cycle batteries costing $280 and a 10,000 watt modified sine wave inverter costing $229. Cables and fuses cost another $134, For a grand total of $1801. This inverter provides 220 volts and charges 28 miles per hour.Anyone living off grid with no access to 110 might find my solution will work for them. In short you may not need to visit a supercharger that often.

    I totally agree on the LR versus SR. I regularly make 600 plus miles (4x a year just for work), and the LR is a definite a huge benefit for long trips. Especially with the current SR+ versus LR being almost 100 mile difference or offset the 80% suggested max charge for normal use. Although I about once a year make a trip that required 100% on my LR or take an extra 3 hour drive to make it t from my home to the next available Supercharger. The trip is 285 miles from my house to the SC and my max range is 310 for the 2018 model. And he first half is all hills which negatively affects the range. That trip especially if there is say heavy rain or other weather events leaves me with about 2% battery left. Luckily for me last month they added a charger at the 70% mark of that trip so not near as bad any more.

    • @MadmaxMusic93
      @MadmaxMusic93 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah but you know what isn't different between the SR an LR winter, the efficiency is worse on the LR then the SR you'll lose less miles on a standard range then a long range cause it has only one motor while the LR takes two motors so its maxing out power. SR has a great stereo system, the range is excellent 272 is about right in real time!! 👏

    In my experience, every new car that I bought, I was really excited about until the new car smell faded. And then I was left with the feeling of how much money I dropped on transportation. Cars are a quickly depreciating asset and overspending on one slows the building of wealth. Buy with your head and not your heart. Make a car purchase based on the miles you can drive it per dollar. Until we know the limits on Tesla, we won't have that info.

    Hey guys. Congrats on your M3! Welcome to the family. :-)
    I believe your range will improve after about 400-500 miles of driving, since the tires on the car aren’t really broken in yet. I remember feeling the same way after I got my 2020 model 3 last September. The efficiency has definitely improved since those initial first months. Keep riding it out, and see if that helps!

    Hi Val, Hi Matt, really enjoyed the video but have to add something about driving the Model 3. On a day to day basis it is perfectly correct to say that you want to keep the state of charge between 20 & 80% because it helps with battery health. However, on a trip you really should be starting with 100% which will give roughly 200 mls on your version. Then stop for about 40 minutes at a Supercharger station and recharge to 100% of battery capacity and continue on your journey. So, every 3 hrs or so you stop for food/drink/pee break; then carry on. Pretty-much like a gas car, no?
    The video made me think that you only ever charge up to 80%, which is not how it's designed to work.

I’m upgrading from a 2009 Honda Civic, my college car I’ve had it for 10 years 😅 The only thing that worries me a little bit is the battery dying quickly. I drive less than 10,000 miles a year but still live in a condo and will have to constantly rely in the Supercharging stations. I commute about 35 miles into the bay area and am super excited to get my car. I appreciate the insight about how comfortable the seats are and I can totally relate when it comes to things falling between the seat and center console. I wanted to get the long range, but I have a really hard time justifying the added cost monthly, when I can just use my Honda Pilot when I have to take longer trips. This video really helped validate my purchase, so thanks a bunch!

      I invested in Tesla back in 2013, I was very much a bear, My reasoning was simple: Tesla was trying to do what no American automaker has done so far: Develop and sell a mass-market electric vehicle. It was trying to do what no American company had done in nearly a century: Start up a new auto manufacturing business. To take it a step further, I bought 40 shares from Tesla miners, investing about $1,800 in total with part of the proceed from a 401(k) rollover. At the $908 per share price I sold at,that's a realized profit of $35,000! It may not be a life changing money, but it's an incredible return nonetheless,Now I am working with 3 asset Gold, Silver and Crypto all are good but crypto investment is the mother of them all, Crypto has followed this pattern for sometime now, it dips and gets everyone scared then after retesting an old resistance several times, we wake up one day to see it is bullish. This period is the perfect time to buy the dip and accumulate irrespective of the bulls being under pressure. Bitcoin moving up is inevitable and would see the price of bitcoin surpass it's all time highs. The reversal was imminent because obviously, the bitcoin market needed a correction to gather the right momentum to give the bulls more steam and this just make it the perfect time to invest and accumulate as much as possible. I'd strongly advice any newbie/traders to buy the dip for traders who are still wondering whether to enter the market or old time traders who are Holders to seek help from not just any trader but an established trading expert with at least 89% trade accuracy. I underwent a series of trading losses I'd best not talk about before I was introduced to trading analyst Expert Mrs Mitchell Roland. My contact with her has being the hallmark of this year for me,under her careful guide and her signal service I've been able to recover my losses and even grow my trading portfolio massively from 1.2 btc to 8.6 BTC in just 5 weeks. I will advice traders especially newbies to have an orientation of trading before they get involved in it. Expert Mrs Mitchell Roland makes you learn daily while you make profits with her signals.

I’ve owned my Model Y for two years now and I honestly can only give 8.5 for three reasons. The range is nowhere near what is advertised. The Easy Entry sucks because it keeps selecting the wrong “driver”. And lastly, the Tesla customer service is nonexistent.

      In my perspective, this eliminates distraction. There are waaaaay to many things going on in cars with 20 different dials and buttons and all. This is clean and in one area. If anything it’s an extension of safety, the screen becomes an extension of the road. It becomes a part of the windshield, something to keep your eye on every once in a while, like your speedometer

    The SR+ IS a 260mile+ range car. You should charge to 100% at least once a month to calibrate the software & battery. Also when charging at an SC don't set it to 80% set it to 100% even if you only want 80%. If it thinks you are ending your charge at 80% it will throttle down charging rate sooner, if it thinks you are going to 100% it will maintain a higher charging rate. Then just stop whenever you want. Also SENTRY MODE eats power and try and use AP less and not use your car as an AV system during lunch break.

    I bought a Tesla 3 back in 2019 with the extended battery range (307 miles per charge) Love it.
    At the time I also had the EV BMW i3, which is a fun car too but the battery was 120-140 I believe. (No longer have it, it was leased).
    I can definitely say that any EV that gives me less than 300 mpc is a no go. Since the average Tesla will last 1 million miles (even w/a battery change@300k -500k at a current cost of 7-8k...this price will go down in time) it is still the cheapest car on the planet .
    I'm waiting for my Cybertruck late this year...I hope the battery is better/more miles. I ordered the double engine. Our home and business are run on solar so owning electric for us is a no-brainer. With the Space X body material that is pressed, I expect my Teslas will be the last cars I ever own in this lifetime. You guys are great spokes people for the next generation and what they want from a car. AFAICT, that’s primarily a phone-like experience. Complete with charger. It’s such a strong impulse for young people, I can’t imagine you two driving something from the 19XXs which is just plain transpo.
    For us older gens, I point out the following:
    1. “Range” is intentionally euphemized. It should be called “Maximum Range” if you are (a) the only car on the road, (b) willing to drive under 65 mph, (c) over level terrain, and (d) Spring/Fall temperatures. The lack of any or all of the above quickly reduces “range” by 60+%.
    2. Li-Ion is not allowed in aircraft cargo bays for a reason. Strapping a battery to your family and risking a highly kinetic impact is a bit insane. Any accident strong enough to deform the aluminum plate battery armor and break the foil substrate seal on one of the cells, has an very high chance of killing everyone within 50 feet. A Li-Ion fire is not extinguishable, and burns at the surface temp of the Sun for many hours. The doors and windows won’t open and a ton of fire deaths are burned alive trying desperately to escape. If you ever see whispybwhite smoke you have 15 seconds to get 100 feet away: open your window, maximum brake to a stop, and run at full speed.
    3. Charging an EV is a fossil fuel devouring MONSTER. The EPA outlawed incandescent light bulbs bcs, as they still say, saving 25W per household is the emissions equivalent of 800,000 cars. Imagine what adding a million watts per home does to CO2 emissions. It’s utterly catastrophic.
