- Recorded 1985 from the Pharoah Sanders album Shukuru.
This cut taken from Leon Thomas Anthology
Leon Thomas: Vocal
Pharoah Sanders: Sax
William Henderson: Piano
Ray Drummond: Bass
Idris Muhammad: Drums
Leon attributed his trademark yodelling to an accident to his mouth, requiring stitches, that temporarily left him unable to smile. He called it "Soularfone".
OMG! That's it! Lol! My dad used to play these records when I was very little. It tickled me and I would giggle when he yodeled. Aaaah good times. Thanks!
Beautiful. I now do that with my daughter. Leon creating beautiful memories and connections
THAT'S IT!
I had the blessing of seeing Leon Thomas in Dayton 1971. I was just blown away by him, his singers/dancers/musicians. One horn player walked off of the University of Dayton Field house floor after starting a solo. When it came time for the whole group to start playing together he just started playing from where he was sitting on the other side of the court, walked down some halls, and came back onto the playing area. I wrote the titles for about 4 poems that night, went home, and finished all of them before I went to sleep that night. I'm so thankful to have seen him once in my lifetime.
To have spent time in his presence can only be described as a spiritual gift...Son of a bassist that played with Leon Thomas on the Jazzmobile...forever a part of my being.
Leon Thomas is a major gift to my life. I listened to jazz casually for years and one day a college roommate put on Leon Thomas Live in Berlin and "The Creator Has A Master Plan" came on and suddenly so many disparate things came together in my mind. My focus on jazz by year end had eclipsed the rock I'd been listening to all my life and still enjoy. Even without all of that Mr. Thomas has been a spectacular musician to listen to for the last 50 years. So glad you got to be in his presence and your dad got to play with him - your dad must be or have been a spectacularly talented man to play at that level.
Such a Special experience
Pure ascension to the Creator and Universe. I had the grateful privilege of meeting Leon Thomas at age 7 in New York with my Dad who was a bassist from Philly. What a giant in many aspects with that voice and substance. He lost his hearing while touring with rock bands from the loud speakers. Never forgotten. The great Idris Muhammad just sits in the pocket never missing a beat. Pharoah Sanders conveys the special spiritual connection that evokes tears of joy and tranquility. Hear the sounds and ascend.
I close my eyes to concentrate on the ending and have to open my eyes to cry at the beauty and I'm fine with both.
RIP Leon Thomas. You were amazing! Your recordings are forever!
Ancestral spirits flowed through brother when he was with us in the physical, now they do with what he left us with as part of his world renown artistry/legacy...
I love my people
I was looking at the sun yesterday, and I was thinking that so much goes into stabilizing our existence. Everything in perfect balance. I would sing to the sun and all things with love and appreciation, if I could sing. I'm happy to be here with you all. God is truly great.
One of my favorite artist of all times!!

So happy to see Leon's music live on. He was special to me.
Leon Thomas paved the way for Dwight Tribble, Gregory Porter, Ola Onabule and others.....thank God his spirit lives
Leon, is a E. St. Louis homeboy. The interaction between he and Pharoah is unflappable. The transition between Leon's vocalization and Pharoah's solo is smooth as hair on a babies behind. Truly a stoke of genius.
RIP Leon Thomas - you were magnifcent and just so magical to listen to - heavenly- Thanks for posting pal

One of those TH-cam gems..
ladies and gentlemen Mr Leon Thomas!
Such a beautifully crafted song, I have been closing my eyes and allowing myself to be transported to musical heaven for over 30 years listening to this gem.....Leon and Pharoah float majestically on top of Idris Muhammad's pulsating, ethereal and hypnotic drumming, which he subtly intensifies as the song glides along. Like the great Terry Callier, it is a travesty that so few of us even know that the wonderful Leon Thomas existed. A musician's singer. A beautiful voice and artist....
Leon Thomas Live in Berlin was what opened my mind up to jazz itself. I remember when it happened. Suddenly it all came together, back in 1975 and it's never stopped. I'm grateful to him for this and all his other musical gifts.
Remember this my father Brick would play this beautiful song while teaching me 313Wee Gee my Brother Tone Tantrum an my Brother Clyde the meaning of manhood I really miss those days
I am so blessed to hear this music and listen to this music and immerse in this music!

This is when music is inspired by GOD! Truly inspirationally special! mmmmmm
AWESOME!!!
You're RIGHT - True UNsung hero - I wish I could have seen him LIVE!!
it's criminal how he is ignored. some jazz encyclopedias don't even mention him or at the very most as a footnote to pharoah sanders... he is profiled in both my books on yodeling: Yodel-ay-ee-oooo & the forthcoming YODEL IN HIFI.
I love his music.
First time I Heard this Sunday morning on WKDU FM in Philadelphia PA
I LOVE TRYING TO MIMIC HIS SCAT...(IVE GOT MY MOM TRYING TO DO IT)...LOL
My sister listens to this all the time. She had it cranked when she pulled up to my mother's house. I caught the crazy bitch trying to sell Ma's house out from under her when Ma went to the hospital after her stroke. She needs to rain dance her ass back to the commune soon. Cause I can't take this shit much longer.
Freshes....Energy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
