One of the creator’s masterpieces was John Mclaughlin……beauty, fills my life with the spark of inspiration and always an aim…..thanks for 4 decades of guidance,Maestro….
After Hendrix passed in 1970, John McLaughlin became my favourite guitarist. Decades after 'My Goals Beyond' and 'Inner Mounting Flame' McLaughlin's playing is as effortless and brilliant as it ever was. A nice tribute to Pharoah Sanders. Thanks for posting it.
One of the demigods descended from the Olympus of Music. One of the stars of the macrocosmic ephemeris of Art. Here, one of the most insignificant admirers, disciple and follower of him. God keep the King in the palm of his hand!🙏🏻. Health, success and blessings from Guayaquil-Ecuador🇪🇨
I fell in love with John McLaughlin s guitar playing in 1982 when I really started practicing the guitar to pursue the life of a guitar player. Been lucky to being in touch with him personally and totally stoked to see him in person again in October!!!
I have seen this man live many times starting 53 years ago. It blows my mind that he is still the king of both fast and slow, Shredding and melody~! Thank you for so many unbelievable years~!
my 4th ever LP was burds of fire way back. when the old record shops in the uk wear cool. i got it for the sleve cover a thing you did back then roger dean etc. of corse this lead to mills etc. mist the concert he did in glasgow. but had to whate 30 years for the usher hall gig my mind was blown. the cd live at ronnie scotts is a masterpece. he is truly the guro and know shakti is back. thanks for the music JM.
July Morning is an annual Bulgarian festival, celebrated on the night before and the first day of July. The festival is unique to Bulgaria but it is not universally observed in the country. A fine backdrop for this beautiful concert !
Whether there is a "Master Plan", or an entity who controls it, is up for debate, but what's not is that there is room to be unique within this "plan", and share a peaceful expression to all who inhabit this world. And John is a wonderful messenger of this message. I didn't know he sang! More please! And for those who slam him for just playing fast... There is a lovely dispersion of fast and slow guitar notes in this very gentle piece of music. Don't judge John by one or two recordings. His body of work is vast and quite varied. And his tribute to Jeff Beck is better than any other from the many Rock guitarists' tributes out there. John can play anything, but CHOOSES to play like himself. He's been an inspiration to me since first hearing him in the 70s, when he only played super fast, but I stayed with him as he matured as both an artist and a human being. A wonderful journey for his fans. When's his autobiography coming out - I'll pre-order today!
I first saw the Mahavishnu Orchestra on "In Concert" in 1972. They were at the absolute peak of their powers as young musicians. I was completely blown away and I'm still a fan. JM is a truly amazing guitarist, but the rest of the band were equally good. It was simply a great band.
I attended their first ever concert, at Carnegie Hall. They played support to It's a Beautiful Day. When the latter came on, most of the audience left.
God - ABC's In Concert, NBC's Wolfman Jack & The Midnight Special & Don Kirschner's syndicated Rock Concert. What pissed me off about ALL those late Friday night/or syndicated weekend concert shows was they ALWAYS DELIBERATELY put the superior groups on at the tail end of the show, at going for 1 or 2 AM. I usually came home from hanging w/friends around 11 or so, high or drunk, and then had to sit thru almost an hour & a half of Top 40 pop hit CRAP "artists" while desperately trying to stay awake & not pass out ... 90% of the time I just couldn't do it! I missed 2 Mahavishnus, Miles Davis, & most of the Allman's final videoed concert w/Duane & Berry. In all those years of shows I only managed to stay awake for three I wanted to see: Weather Report on Midnight Special, Edgar Winter on In Concert, and Roxy Music w/ Eno, Ferry, & Manzanera on In Concert from London. To this day I've never seen any of those other missed videos. Nobody had consumer VCRs back then. STILL PISSES ME THE HELL OFF, MAN!!!! I think many of them still exist - I know Midnight Special & Kirschner's producers have marketed DVDs, but you have to subscribe or buy a shit-ton of CRAPDRECK to get the one ten minute vintage video you actually want to see. Same old frustrating manipulative, exploitative BS. Bleep that.
Etienne Mbappé - is a Cameroonian bass player living in Paris. His unique style blending West African music with Jazz and Fusion creates exciting music for the ears and soul. Besides playing and singing with his own band Su La Take, Etienne has been working with Joe Zawinul, Ray Charles, Steps Ahead and he is a current member of John McLaughlin's 4th Dimension band. Gary Husband - is an English jazz and rock drummer, pianist, keyboard player and bandleader. He is also a composer, arranger and producer. Husband is a member of John McLaughlin's group The 4th Dimension, he also regularly performs with Germany's Norddeutscher Rundfunk Big Band and as a solo pianist. Born of a professional drummer, Nicolas Viccaro started the drums at the age of 3, then studying at the National Conservatory of Nice, and obtains the 1st Prize of Conservatory before moving to Paris. There, he hit the international scene with prestigious collaborations in Pop Music but also on the Jazz scene passing through the African music and Latin Jazz music.
@@written12 He says he starting experimenting with the idea to get a different sound. He reckons it gives him more control than using his bare skin in the same way that using fingers gives more control of the sound than playing with a pick. He also says that without gloves his hands sweat a lot which affects the sound from the strings. Playing with gloves means he doesn't have to change strings as often.
Wellll, I'd not be so cocksure quick to dismiss one James Marshall Hendrix, nor Alan Holdsworth, Larry Coryell, Greg Howe, Scott Henderson, Al DiMeola, Stevie Ray, Robin Trower, or a contemporary gentleman named Clapton, either.
If memory serves, the DVD of his 2011 reunion w/Carlos Santana at Montreaux also has a performance of this. I thought after his tour w/Jimmy Herring a couple of years ago, he was retiring from live performances. Happy to see his struggles w/arthritis have apparently eased. Arguably the most awe-inspiring guitarist, after Hendrix, EVER. I've seen him twice: once in '73 w/the original Orchestra & their Birds of Fire tour, & once w/Santana and their Love, Devotion, Surrender tour. I can still remember the "A love Supreme. Supreme, supreme." drone chanting & long stick stage incense smell, ha. For both shows he had that huge Rex Bogue custom double necked guitar that later perished in a storage fire. Weird - for me - coincidence: I recently found out in a Metronome magazine interview that McLaughlin made the decision to form his own Mahavishnu band while talking w/Miles Davis backstage, on tour in '71 at the storied Lennie's on the Turnpike music nightclub on Rte 1 in Peabody, Mass. That's only about a mile from my old junior high school, & less than two miles from my childhood home. I was only about 12 at the time & had no idea of any of this, but I'm kinda flabbergasted now that this happened so nearby to me & where I'd soon first discover his music thanks to a close friend who's deceased now. I guess I'd assumed that he'd made such a momentous career decision back in say, New York or London. Lennie's is long since gone now, but I probably rode by it a thousand times as a kid.
The wizard ....the exquisite Maha Vishnu is timeless with his strings ....pulling at my heart strings.... shook his hand when he came to Goa in Panjim Kala Akademi Amphitheatre....with Shakti.. in '70.....
Picked up Now Hear This and been listening to Liberation Time and Black Light recently. Full of joy and energy as always. Thanks for the music and inspiration John! I have to time a trip to Europe and go see the band live. A fellow guitarist.
@liminal You're correct; his music is almost all instrumental. Of course Gail Moran and Narada Michael sang on some of the Mahavishnu Orchestra tracks. Like you, I have never seen him sing lead in the traditional way, but he's certainly done the kind of ensemble singing they do in this vid. Here's another example: th-cam.com/video/cP1LkjlDII4/w-d-xo.html As a side note, I attended a performance in ~1982 and was up front making photos. At one point John introduced a song that usually has vocals and said, "I wish I could sing". I reflexively responded, "Your guitar sings for you." He apparently heard me, looked in my direction, smiled, kind of shook his head and said, "Yeah . . . yeah".
I was there and that was one of the happiest days in my life.
Wow 80 years old and still playing at this level ... Olee maestro!
Lovely tribute to Pharoah Sanders, and I can't believe how on top of it McLaughlin still is in his 80s.
It amazes me as well. Jeff Beck similarly. Most at that age are up there to please the fans & have a good time, etc.
One of the creator’s masterpieces was John Mclaughlin……beauty, fills my life with the spark of inspiration and always an aim…..thanks for 4 decades of guidance,Maestro….
Undoubtedly the world's greatest guitarist and musician.
Did he break some record ? I hope we will see him in the Olympics, Paris 2024.
Behave 😂
The fireworks are a perfect compliment to his playing 🙂
Age is just a number! John is 80 and still plays beautifully!
It takes that many years to reach his level.
That's an understatement if I ever heard one! He's still top of the pile .
Yess
Hes 81 years old my neighbor got me into him

Wow, at age 81 the man has still got it.
John singing Is something never seen before, Gary Who can sit at Your choice on drums or keyboards Is priceless
His guitar always sings
He sang on Love Devotion Surrender with Carlos Santana, and probably with Lifetime as well.
This groove is very tasty, the band awesome and John as always the sovereign master.

"Peace and harmony for every man" ! Thanks to John, to Pharoah Sanders, and to Amos Leon Thomas Jr. !

Jazz, groove et spiritualité. Ce qu'on admire chez Mr John !!
Monsieur JML est un des plus grands guitaristes de tous les temps. Il a influencé les plus grands. Chapeau bas.

Saw Mahavishnu open for Zappa in Detroit around that time. It took me a year to recover...

É possível um não bom músico tocar Pharoah Sanders? E ao lado de JM? Impossível

More like his tone with santana on flame sky. I like it
Dear cameraman keep the camera on John's hands when he's playing.
Flame Sky is an amazing track
Tusen tack Uffe för ha tipsat musik från John Mclaughin. Musik lyftar upp.

What a tribute, thank you.

A consumate Master, playing that beautiful Pernambuco neck PRS custom ... a match made above
I wonder why he no longer seems to play Godin guitars? (Or Gibson Les Paul's or Fender Jaguar/Jazzmasters for that matter. Do they now all suck, lol?)
