I'm pretty sure you quoted Rev Mother Mohaim, and her "corrected" version of the "Thou shall not make a machine to counterfeit a man's mind" that Herbert attributes to the OC bible.
@Reaperofwind no definitely not, and Herbert is VERY spesific that nothing purely mechanical, however complex is prohibited. Our computers wouldn't qualify as thinking machines today, and certainly won't for a very long time, because it doesn't mean AI as we know it here. It is bio-electro-chemical circuitry shaped into systems that are conscious individuals, but with linear thinking powers a human can't hope to match, even the best mentats are limited by the size of their skull because a brain-circuit interface is also prohibited by the Great Convention, the "constitution" of the Landsraad/Imperium/Guild to simplify it. It's not a religious or superstitious reaction that any original series main characters have, it's the law of their government, and they have excellent documentation of what autonomous living computers get up to if given the chance. Contrary to how it is frequently talked about since the movies opened it up, simple circuitry like a radio, power cells and their regulators like capacitors/transistors are all quite obviously in use in Dune, as are simple "COMPILERS". There is a Grey area too though A great deal of the common people can't understand the difference between dumb circuits that only do what they're told and living non-organic beings with pseudobiomechanical brains and bodies (some humanoid, some gundam/transformers/Evas, some entire planets. So there can be what we'd call witch trials or linchings on some planets if sophisticated but still "letter of the law" abiding technology is found. This is also deliberately stoked and weaponized by some factions in the imperium as well.
I really didn’t expect Pruwet to die, especially so soon and so horrific. The little boy's screams still give me the shivers when I think about it. The Young Duke's death is definitely going to have major ripples across the Imperium.
THE HILLS ARE ALIVE WITH THE SOUND OF VIDEO ESSAYS. I missed saying that. Got nothing to add, other than your voice is so soothing. I wish you could read me bedtime stories 😌
LOL thank you! I was struck by inspo earlier today and although recording is usually one of my least favorite parts of video making, I actually enjoyed it today. And we might call this more of a video blurb, but that's splitting hairs.
So we know for certain that Ynez will have a child, she has to because the Corrino's bloodline needs to continue. I'm assuming they're going to have her have a child with the Atriedes swordmaster. Which would make for an interesting parallel: Ynez has a child with someone she wasn't supposed to, and the Atredies enter the breeding program. Jessica has a son instead of a daughter, and the Atrides bring the breeding program to an end.
The big elephant in the room about Javicco's terrible, not-good situation is that Corrinos haven't created the Sardaukar yet, and won't do it for a time (according to general lore, Salusa needs to get nuked so we can have the adecuate conditions for prisoners there to become the iconic death commandos). I like this aspect in the series cause it shows something so many people still don't get about the Imperium: Corrinos aren't Palpatine or the Emperor from Warhammer 40k, their actual power and capabilities depend a lot on the tolerance and loyalty of the Landsraad and the Great Convention, a bit like westerosi kings. In a way, Shaddam IV did something unacceptable by attacking the Atreides in the same way Aerys II fucked around and found out. Another important point is that by this time Corrinos are managing Arrakis directly - unlike the 'modern Dune days' when Arrakis and spice administration is something more like a contract in a quasi-feud (the big exception were the Atreides, who were given Arrakis fully but we already know it was so it would be absurd and almost traitorous for Leto to reject it). So we have an emperor with very limited forces and without the elite unit that will allow future emperors to act a bit more freely and like mafia heads, and who still has to deal with Arrakis as an extra responsability. Javicco's father, Roderick, was the one who managed a balance between the anti-tech butlerians and the more tolerant factions like the Spacing Guild, but no wonder now Javicco has to disturb that balance a bit by giving the Richese privileges and even by not punishing them for the robo-gecko. Wouldn't surprise me if at some point the show introduces this dynamic of giving Arrakis to a house major, of even showing the nuke of Salusa as a consequence for not punishing the Richese. We know a house named Tantor did it, but we don't know the details and reasons.
@@HillsAliveYT Exactly and don't get me wrong, they are very powerful. Specially by the time of Shaddam and his father, Elrood IX, they acted like true bullies and got away with it most of the time. But during Prophecy they are still just your common noble house whose imperial title depends on its historic relevance and the victory against the TM, as you put it in your video. I like that in Villeneuve's canon we kinda have a visual representation of this difference. Javicco dresses like a general, a 'common' military officer, everything feels more 'normal' with him meanwhile Shaddam dressed more like your typical emperor from an advanced sci-fi setting and even has a big alien looking chromatic sphere as a flagship lol
Oh my god yes I love your observation of the costuming! Javicco's aesthetic has a very military look to it, while Christopher Walken's Emperor looks a lot more Pope-like, which really matches with where their family is at each time period. The early Corrinos are still close to the literal warriors who destroyed the machines, but Shaddam and Irulan have a much more religious aesthetic, which suits a time period where the Battle of Corrin and the Corrinos themselves feel more like an ideological symbol of humanity in contrast to thinking machines.
@@HillsAliveYT Totally! Never though of Shaddam as a pope-like figure but it even has some lore basis if you take the religious aspect of the sardaukar training into consideration. They are fanatical about their loyalty to the imperial house and the Corrinos were very cunning in filling the salusan 'culture' with empty rituals and liturgy to consolidate that fanaticism. It makes a lot of sense - the early Corrinos still can use the Battle of Corrin and the jihad as a symbol of legitimacy, but during a 10k year old reign you definitely need more.
