Nice review! I owned a 2016 EcoDiesel Limited 4WD. I really loved that truck. On my daily commute I occasionally got a hair over 30mpg. It towed well and was super comfortable. One thing about trucks like this is that you actually pay well under sticker. The sticker on my 2016 was something like 62K and I paid 48K for it. Felt like a deal. I got rid of it primarily because it didn’t have CarPlay and Android Auto and I really prefer the functionality of that setup. I also changed jobs and found myself searching for parking spaces in downtown Austin a lot. It really didn’t fit into a lot of those. I probably won’t buy another expensive truck but if I do it would definitely be one of these.

Fun review! Thanks for all your content - always informative, fun and unique. For anyone thinking about an EcoDiesel but worried about the engine - don't be worried. Sure there seem to have been a few lemons with quality control issues on the main / rod bearings that kick the bucket (usually in the first 20K miles or so), but mine has been super reliable. In 68K driven since new, the only issue I have ever had was a blown glow plug, which was $67 for the part and 35 minutes of my time to replace. The engine is made by VM Motori (yes still Italian), which has a lot of experience building marine and commercial diesel motors. A quick software tune will give you close to 30 MPG in regular mixed driving. Keeping it under 55mph on the highway gets me almost 35 mpg, and I regularly get better than 15MPG towing a 5400lb TT through the mountains. An excellent truck and I would buy one again in a heartbeat. Like others said there were significant discounts to be had on these I got mine $21K under MSRP. Just change the oil regularly with 5W40 Rotella or similar, use only very trusted mechanics or do the work yourself, and stay away from cr@ppy fuel since bad diesel is one sure way to grenade the fuel pump and engine quickly on these. Thanks again for the great review and happy driving to all the other fellow EcoDiesel owners out there.

Great review on a very nice truck! I get where you are coming from regarding off-roading a pretty truck. I have a '19 F150 FX4 that I spent a ton of cash for all the luxury items because it is my daily driver and our traveling truck for any long distance trips. I am so careful with it come hunting season when I have to take it off road because I don't want to beat the crap out of it. First every so tiny ding from my wife's vehicle front door (parked side-by-side in garage) just felt so bad! Oh well, it made it almost a year dingless...

@@TroyPosey Sure, the most value, but all trucks, including all other RAMs hold value better than all other segments. In fact, for 2019, the RAM 1500 has the 3rd highest resale in the highest resale class. Only the Tacoma and Silverado had higher resale. The F150 was lower, but it's also because there are just so many of those. Either way, the differences between resale between the lowest and highest in the truck segment is just a few percentage points, even the lowest resale truck beats most all other cars/suvs.

Dodge has just always been the chittiest American truck brand but when Fiat bought the company they became disconnected from the reality they have put themselves into and that's being the farthest you could possibly be from a truck that's meant to be a truck and do truck things while being an actual truck.

Ram is definitely killing it with their interiors and I’m a big fan of the Ram Box bed I’d probably option it without the air suspension & a Hemi it’s that FCA quality that’s keeping me from getting onto one if I were to simply buy it and own it for 2-3 years then trade it in for the next newest greatest I’d get one if I had $75K to constantly burn. I average 10+ yrs of ownership and typically put 200K+ mi on my vehicles in that time period I’ve learned sometimes less is better and again that FCA quality makes for a risky investment over time, I’ve had to many bad experiences with Dodge/Chrysler/FCA products and that typically pushes me towards Ford & GM trucks

used a 2017 eco diesels to tow my track car to an event through a pretty twisty hilly road and we averaged over 16mpg. Almost 14k lbs total weight! The silverado I normally use tows way worse and gets waaaay worse mileage considering the road i was on. I was very impressed with how it towed. Not enough to buy one of my own but still... impressed.

Everyone keeps bitching about the shifter knob. I've owned 2 RAM 1500s (2013 & 2019) for a total of 6 years/110k miles. I've had ZERO issues with adjusting or using it. I actually prefer it over the standard center console or stalk shifter now.

I forgot more then a couple times to put my Ram 1500 in park because of the gear knob. Luckily it just yells at you then puts itself in park if you turn it off while in drive. I appreciate the space it frees up but its hard to learn something new after 20 of leavers. Damn I'm getting old

Sarah, you should review the 3500 Cummins high output, and install a throttle booster to Eliminate the dead peddle. Take off at half throttle, with booster set at 100%, with tow haul on.
My 2019 3500 Cummins HO was $78k and it’s a Laramie. So not even the higher trim, and currently have 4100 miles on it and it’s bees down plenty of dirt roads and mud holes. Sure I don’t beat it, but it’s also a truck. And will be used as one.

Minor correction: The 3.0 EcoDiesel (L 630) used in the Ram 1500 is sourced from VM Motori, not Fiat. Only the Ram ProMaster van uses the Fiat 3.0 EcoDiesel. They’re different engines by different companies, though both Italian and both owned by FCA.

ZF = Zepplin, Ferdinand, the name of the founder of the company. Over the years, the company has made various products. While they specialize in quality gearboxes, including transmissions. They did at one time manufacture the famous Hindenburg and other dirigibles.
I really like the 8-sp ZF transmission in my 2016 Ram 1500 Ecodiesel. And my 2020 Dodge Durango.

One of the things I dislike about my 2020 Rebel is if you open the door while in reverse the truck will put itself in park and engage the parking brake. That is annoying when trying to back up in a close area. The best part of the truck is probably the Rambox and the partition gate in the back. I use the heck out of it. I did not get the diesel because in my area it was 10k over the price of a Hemi, the Hemi sounds a ton better.

I think back to the first full size truck, an F150 XLT, I bought in 1993....I only paid $19,750. I am just amazed that trucks, regardless of how much luxury they come with, cost. This Dodge costs more than my first house did with 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, 2 car garage, and a very decent sized yard. I will just by used and let someone else take that hit to their wallet.

The rotary nob for the transmission has taken a long time to get used to. Good thing Dodge has a safety feature that prevents the truck from rolling if you open the driver door and still in drive. There have been a couple of times where I went to open the gate and forgot to put it in park because I don’t have a lever off the column to pull down on as you get out of the truck. But otherwise they are nice trucks.

My four year old 2016 laramie longhorn (just below limited) is worth more than 60% of what I paid for it, which was at least $13K below sticker. A car worth more than 50% at 4 years has held its value well - not collector car level well, but daily driver well. Also - other than RAM's inability to keep my rear view camera working, I have had ZERO maintenance issues. They finally replaced the camera, after I collected videos of it not working on morning start-ups. The new one still has an occasional glitch - very frustrating.

I'm no mathematician or penguin, but the average between 1 and 5 is actually 3, not 2.5 if you're not including 0 or any fraction less than 1.
Average = Sum / Count. The sum 1+2+3+4+5=15, The count is 5 numbers (12,3,4,5). 15/5=3. Therefore 3 is the number that thou shall count as average, not 2.5.

Changing the exhaust or modifying egr/dpf systems is going to be harder to do now. Companies that used to sell kits such as those have been getting in trouble with EPA over the last couple of years so don't bank on being able to delete or modify any part of those systems.
