      @chile_en_nogada2090 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@fathervader Well yes I totally think it wasnt an enjoyable star wars experience. But actually I am one of the few that also believe that the movie was poorly made in terms of direction. Rian Johnson just cannoy direct the actors well. Its really interesting to me. Rey when she is 'training' with Luke is so lifeless compared to Rey in the force awakens.
      Also cinematography wise. If you create a pretty still or picture but the meaning behind is pointless or confusing then the picture itself is not good. I am mainly talking about the Holdo Manuever. Which has already been needed to be retconned twice. Its these things that demonstart to me that not much thought was behind the movie or scenes. This movie broke star wars cannon so many times.
      That holdo scene also included the use of slow motion which breaks star wars cannon. Slow motion doesnt make sense in star wars movies as they are supposed to be a drama or like a stage play. In a stage play you cant do slow motion.
      There are other ways it breaks cannon but I do not remember right now

      As far as we know, there was no conflict. i.e. an empire knock-off with a ridicoulous amount of resources popping out of nowhere, nor a "neo-resistsance". It was supossed to be something similar to the EU comics with a different storyline.
      We know that Luke was to become a depressed hermit after he was betrayed by one his students, known as the "Jedi Killer". And that he will get back in action by the end of the first movie and die in the third. Also Han and Leia's son (who might be the Jedi Killer) left the Jedi and took a female Dark Side user as his master.
      This is different from an asshole and nihilistic Luke who believes in determinism, and who despises the concept of heroism. One who believes that it is impossible to redeem Ben, even though he redeemed Darth Vader who did much worse atrocities (in the canon comics, Ben didn't even try to destroy the Jedi temple so he didn't betray the Jedi Order or Luke. He escaped after he saw Luke near his bed with his lightsaber raised, and a mysterious storm came soon after and destroyed the Jedi temple). After years of this worldview, Luke finally decides to sacrifice himself as a Force projection (instead of using his ship which was retconned into being functional), and finally die as he wanted to, because Yoda's ghost mocked him for being a bad Jedi and not reading Jedi texts as he should have, and telling him he should teach his failures as well.

    I unabashedly love The Last Jedi, warts and all. Because it comes from a place of sincerity and heart, from a talented film maker who clearly loves Star Wars and understands it bone-deep.
    I can't wait to see Rian Johnson's trilogy, where he's not constrained by JJ bloody Abrams.
    I only wish, in a perfect world, that Rian's trilogy would be about Rey, Finn, Poe Dameron, Kylo Ren, Snoke, Phasma and Rose. Because I love all of the versions of those characters in The Last Jedi.

      @charlessheridan9114 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I don't even think he was constrained by J.J.
      As far as I'm concerned, he was constrained by Disney.
      Rian even said he would've been willing to do Episode 9 but wasn't able to because there was just too little time, but not just that, Colin Trevorrow had a script (available online) for his own Episode IX that was built upon the foundations set by The Last Jedi, and similar to The Last Jedi, he wrote the film while observing the story taking place within the previous one. Disney scrapped it because they wanted to appeal to the vocal minority but instead pleased absolutely nobody and made a hack job of a movie that almost rivals Justice League.

      J. J. Abrams made an uninspired mystery box, so Rian Johnson pooped in it to troll. He mocked Abram's plot points he worked so hard to set up in the previous movie and humilated various characters, and dismissed the Star Wars' themes, and presented a nihilistic and deterministic view of the universe; Luke Skywalker hates himself and the concepts people would find inspiring in Star Wars because Rian Johnson hates them as well. It doesn't help that the plot is non-sensical and internally inconsistent.

    Luke’s greatest triumph was throwing his lightsaber down to serve as a symbol of good to Vader. The last Jedi sees him reclaiming that by again becoming a symbol of triumph through pacifism. A projection of the ideas he inspired. Evil destroys itself. Ideas are bulletproof.

You also have to execute it well, and to me, a random woman telling a child soldier, who is trying to run away from war, about evils of war as if he’s learning it for the first time isn’t well executed. And frankly I had to learn the concept of good ideas don’t equal good execution the hard way in my English class. My teacher kept praising me for the brilliance of my ideas but criticized my poor execution. I believe it’s the same case with TLJ.

He left the first order because he was terrified by their executions and was afraid he would get killed himself. Now he realizes that the problem is even larger. Rose is showing him a side where he's not fighting only for himself and his own survival, but for the greater good for the people of the galaxy.

I did not have a lot of expectations, just patience. I do not parse each scene, each plot line, each bit of dialogue. I enjoyed the last trilogy. It's done. If I were a well-established writer/director asked to finish up the saga, I probably would have had a different take on at least some of the plot and characters, but I'm not! So I'm just glad and gratified that I lived long enough to see the story completed, at least for now. All their arguments are rubbish, it boils down to one simple thing... they expected Luke to be a god and smite the bad guys while everybody else sat around and watched. This movie did everything a sequel should have done, it expanded the lore, added to the legend, and made the Force a universal thing again.
    Buuuuuuuut. Jar Jar Abrams had to destroy all that in an attempt to appease the haters. So now Star Wars is just another universe of superpowered mutants fighting each other. And then my mom asks why I want to by a figurine of a Star Wars character... LIKE THAT'S WHY. Because it reminds me that I shouldn't give up hope when times are dark, the same way my heroes don't. With every positive video I watch about TLJ, I get more assured that people who bash it have never actually thought about it's underlying ideas. Perhaps they are scared they will like it and alienate themselves from the loud and hateful part of the fandom? Maybe. But that is what Star Wars is all about. Be the part of the Resistance, save what you love, and leave the haters annihilate themselves.

      A lot of the detractors are still butthurt fanboys who were upset about the Clone Wars being cancelled and revere the Prequel Jedi and how they conducted their wars, even though if you look at the Jedi in the Prequels they should have been just as much the villains as Palpatine was, (if Lucas knew how to write properly...)
      The Last Jedi in particular addresses this directly, which already gives it a leg up on the Prequels.

    So, basically, Rian Johnson is a fucking Chad.
    Now, on an even more serious note, it's really funny 'cause I've seen some of your videos for a while and kinda dug them, but it was this one from a franchise I don't care about that actually made me decide to subscribe to your channel. The Last Jedi (among other few examples) is the only thing that seems interesting to me out of such a tarnished by its idiotic fandom franchise, and the way you talk about it and everything else simply transmits joy and passion. I know that you wanted to cover the "Rey is a nobody" angle (something that seems like a genius idea to me, as an outsider to the convoluted clusterfuck that is the Star Wars universe) but guess the people who took the decisions for TROS weren't in the same frequency, to put it mildly.

    • @rebeccacrow9013
      @rebeccacrow9013 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@ReichLife I'm curious, what mistakes specifically are you referring to? To me, I've always seen the movie as giving each character one big mistake to make that are based around strong characteristics of their personality - Rey trusting Kylo Ren, Poe committing the mutiny, Finn and Rose with breaking onto the Starkiller, and especially Luke with reacting in fear to Kylo Ren - and each of them learn something from these experiences. I think if Rian Johnson wrote part 9, the mistakes they learned from in 8 would have actively played a part of the story.
      Edit: I don't mean that Luke's fear is his character trait. Luke's situation is far more complex because he is the character we haven't spent time with recently.

    • @immortalfrieza
      @immortalfrieza 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@rebeccacrow9013 Luke's recklessness and impulsiveness are a character trait though. Throughout the Original Trilogy Luke makes many impulsive decisions. He sees Ben die and was going to take on the entire Death Star right then to avenge him if he had to only to relent when Ben's Ghost told him to back off. Luke gets a vision that his friends are in danger and rushes off to try to save them despite that his training has barely started and got his hand chopped off as a result (and ultimately didn't do anything to help.) Luke hears Vader threatening to turn Leia and he goes ballistic on him and nearly falls to the Dark Side.
      All Luke did was on impulse ignite his saber and then realize immediately "what the F am I doing?" which shows his character growth since those days that he stops himself so quickly, but far too late.

    • @rebeccacrow9013
      @rebeccacrow9013 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@immortalfrieza I agree, recklessness and impulsiveness are better ways to define that part of his character. It's a very balanced trait, that is serves both as a strength and a weakness. I think what I was trying to clarify is that I wasn't saying fear was a character trait of his. Fear is just something he has been grappling with for a long time (in my interpretation of the movie), and it has shaped his character, but it's not central to his overall character in the way that love for his friends and recklessness/impulsiveness does define him. (I gathered the person I was speaking to earlier would not have liked me accidentally implying Luke has always been a scaredy cat, which he hasn't been).
      I have such an unpopular opinion, but I love Luke in this movie. He resonated with me in a way he never did in the original trilogy. Rian took his foundational character and made him nuanced in a way that makes so much sense for someone who was forced to take on the responsibility of preserving an entire culture when that wasn't originally what they signed on foor. Luke only signed on to save one person and have an opportunity to leave his planet. I know everyone wants their childhood hero to come in and save the day, but I am such a sucker for stories where you see the hero later and they were not how you expected them to be.

      The Sequel Trilogy doesn't tear apart the original characters and squander the new ones nor does it misunderstand either the original or prequels... until Rise of Skywalker. Up until that point they had all of Star Wars done damn near perfectly. However, thanks the mindless and baseless hatred for The Last Jedi in particular causing Disney to backpedal, Rise of Skywalker was a hopeless dumpster fire that retroactively made the rest of the Sequel Trilogy far worse.
