    Change the spark plugs and coils on your BMW N63 engine in under an hour with the help of this video and one special tool for the plugs. There are many reasons why you would change plugs and coils on a BMW 550, be it lack of acceleration, bad idle, hick ups at high rpms or just because of all age. This service is not cheap at the dealer and even an Indy shop, so if you are at all handy, I recommend trying this yourself at home for a fraction of the cost.

    thank you for the video. I had the (Drivetrain Malfunction, drive moderately) warning and shake happen to me the other day... Went to diagnose the issue at my bmw gallery and "thankfully" it was a spark plug issue misfiring on the cylinders. Ordered the spark plugs and I am waiting to receive and do the replacement myself. This could have been a decent price tag at the dealers, but watching your step by step process gave me the confidence to do it myself. Subscribed!

I haven't had any "Drivetrain Malfunction" warnings or shaking since replacing all the plugs. Car runs and sounds healthy. I replaced all of my ignition coils a month after for peace of mind. This spring I'll replace the fuel injectors, also for peace of mind lol Good luck on your install!

    Couple things to mention if doing this for the first time, as I just learned the hard way. Know how to release the O2 sensor clips (I just broke mine). When removing the intake/air filter pieces, be VERY careful not to move the plastic Charge Pipes too much. I broke both of mine while trying to pull off the air filter pieces, since the whole thing is plastic, including the tab that holds each charge pipe to the turbos. This really sucks to find out after you snap them off, since the entire charge pipe needs to be replaced because it is a one piece molded piece of plastic.

    Hello Thanks for posting! great video and i own a 2014 550i M sport so when i get to that point i know where to look for info. Just on a side note tho, i still own a 2008 550i sport and my first change of the plugs came at 126K miles and it only slightly improved sharpness of throttle (none of them had failed up to that mark). Also at 163k miles today i only had to change 1 ignition coil out of the 8 and the car is still running strong, touching wood :) (PS: i have a brand new oem spare ignition coil in the trunk in case it sarts misfiring while on a road trip...)

      Are you sure your 2008 didn’t have plugs and coils changed before you got it? (Unless you got it new)

      SimpleCarGuy yes 100% those plugs and coils where never changed before. The car looks new inside out. I did change the water pump at around 100k miles and besides the stem seals and the alternator bracket the car was bullet proof. Let’s see how the 2014 stands up to the test of time... i do know that i have the N63 TU installed so hopefully i’ll get lucky on the reliability side. I keep my fingers crossed :)

    Good job man. One thing I would note is when you remove the air filter housing, you don't need to remove the screws for the heat shields underneath. It can come out with the housing. You'll run the risk of dropping the screws in the engine bay, which really sucks.

    Hey with proper maintenance will this motor make it past 150k I'm considering a n63tu my 1st option is the cls550 with m278 but the BMW 650s are my favorite cars I'm just scared to get one from all the horror stories also the n63 looks very diy friendly

    • @SimpleCarGuy
      @SimpleCarGuy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Will it last to 150k? Sure, but how much work will it need to get there is kind of hard to tell. The TU version of the engine is MUCH more reliable as long as the oil has been changed every 5-7k miles and not 15k miles like BMW recommends. My buddy with an n63tu X5 has the valve seals changed under warranty as the car started to smoke a little. Other than that, I haven't heard any horror stories.

    Misfire in 6 and 2 on my 2013 550i xdrive and would go into the drive train malfunction mode so replaced all (8) coils and spark plugs and after the 1st start up it came up right away the drive train malfunction that is so went to maybe try to just remove codes via code reader at local shop and it showed (2) “Permanent” Codes or PDTCs. In those two cylinders 6 and 2. After I replaced the coils and spark plugs perfectly fine. So now it’s obviously to fuel injectors. I assume I would just need to get the (2) for the two misfire locations rather then doing all (8)?. Also, how to video for this? Replacing a fuel injector at home ?

    • @SimpleCarGuy
      @SimpleCarGuy  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Since you have replaced the ignition coils and the spark plugs, cleared the codes and got the same codes again, the most likely culprit like you said are the injectors.
      As far as replacing all 8 or just the 2 that are giving you trouble, that really depends on how you want to handle it. If you are doing it yourself, I would probably just do the 2 and if more go bad in the future, just do those at that time. If you are paying someone to take it all apart, it would probably make more sense to get all 8 done so you aren't paying twice for the same job.
      I dont have a video on this engine, but I did replace injectors on my BMW Z4 which is somewhat similar: th-cam.com/video/IO6xuqbC6nM/w-d-xo.html. Of course you'd need a different removal tool.

If I were you, I’d definitely wait at least another 10k miles and then change it. If you get any symptoms, light misfire pulling hard on highway or anything like that, replace sooner.

    Is Bosch a good coil to use in bmw?

    • @hochh6978
      @hochh6978 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      BOSCH are good for sure. Anyways, make sure you test misfires under high load. You can check them by using CarScanner app and a OBD2 adapter plug. If you don't have misfires on the 4th and 8th cylinder, you're good to go, otherwise, I'd swap the coils with the cylinders that don't misfire and see if it's the coils that don't give the stable ignition.

    • @SimpleCarGuy
      @SimpleCarGuy  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Did you change the coils? Usually coils are the issue, people do spark plugs just because you are already there and it’s cheap in comparison.
      If you haven’t changed the coils, you can switch the coil from the misfiring cylinder and see if it moves with it. Then you’ll know for sure.

    • @mikegusenov1020
      @mikegusenov1020 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      SimpleCarGuy last time i changed coils was like a year ago. Should i still change it?

    • @SimpleCarGuy
      @SimpleCarGuy  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would switch the coils like I mentioned to see if the issue moves to that cylinder (I assume you have a scanner). If the problem does not move with the coil, you might have injector issues.

    I just subscribed to your channel. I have the same car. I recently started having problems & check engine light. First one was Dmtl fuel pump leak. After driving for 2 days. I did a burnout fresh tires I got then after it went into limp mode & start to show drive train malfunction in the engine. I drove it for a little to park it and start smoking from the engine but the car wasn’t overheating. Put the computer on it the error codes were running a code saying running lean & all cylinders misfire. It starts back up without a issue but it goes back into limp mode & sometimes shut off on its own. However I noticed a air seeping sound from the engine when it’s being rev. Please can someone help me find out what could be the issue here

    • @SimpleCarGuy
      @SimpleCarGuy  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Have you done the spark plugs and coils yet? At the very least I would swap them around to see if the code move from one cylinder to another. If it does NOT, it's most likely the injector.
