I’ve got a friend who has a 2009 bmw 750i with original n63 (white engine cover), I changed the thermostat from 115c to a 90c and installed a sport oil cooler valve and a lower pressure coolant cap. He’s been doing oil changes every 3500km with liquid Molly 5w40 fully synthetic oil with seal additives. He’s also added injector cleaner into his tank every oil change. His car currently has 157000km on the odo and it’s still running like a champ with out problems

My first BMW was an E46 with the 2.2 litre inline six cylinder. I bought it when it was 10 years old, as a second car to be used during the winter months. Next, I asked the local BMW dealer to find me a two year old F10 535i and they found me a great car with only 26,000 miles on it. It has the X drive and M Sport package options. It was a leased car that the dealer had serviced since day one. I still have both cars. The F10 is put away for the winter and the E46 is my daily driver, and currently has 301,000 miles on it, still running great. Now, I want the dealer to locate a mint condition M5, but I've been concerned about the oil burning issues with the tirbocharged V8 engines. This video has helped to clear up some of my concerns. Finally an accurate description of the history of the N63 engine and subsequent updates. I have a 2015 650i XDrive with 48k miles, I change the oil every 5k miles or one year. No issues! Love the car and got the car for a steal for a MRSP $115k. The car came with every option! Thanks again for setting everyone right!
Glad to report the truth about the engine! I was also 'scared' by others when I got my 2014 550i years ago, but people seem to forget there are so many version of the same N63 engine! Take care of it and it will take care of you. Enjoy your awesome 650i!

My N63TU is at 118K miles and I’ve done normal maintenance besides changing a radiator under warranty and next week I’m getting new rotors and pads plus O2 sensors she runs just fine and 5-6K oil changes with 5W40 euro full synthetic

Things to keep in mind since ive been around the insides of lots of n63s / s63, they all have forged cranks, they all have similar rods, known to bend around 700wheel torque in the m5s, the older n63s before 02/11 rods were actually used in the newer v12 tt rolls royces and look beefier than the newer rods, n63tu fuel pumps and injectors are still known to go out, biggest benefit of a tu is the head cooling was redesigned and the newer stem seals

Sounds like the 2020 is a fairly safe buy - I absolutely love the look, build quality/look/feel. I watched a similar review trashing the older versions and was getting cold feet on the deposit I put down on a 22 X6 M50i. Your knowledgeable assessment helped me stick with that decision and I’m sure I’ll love the car. I’ve owned several BMW’s and many BMW motorcycles and have bled with the cutting edge of technology at times, but it seems like BMW has done some very good improvements to this engine over time. First the bmw N63 did have these problem, that being said, Bmw finally after a decade they finally built got the N63 engine right. If you have a 2014 and up bmw with the N63 engine all of those problems have been dealt with. I have a 2013 550i and had the engine blown because of rod bearing problems. If you keep up with regular maintenance your bmw will last you one hundred thousand miles and beyond. That being said you common sense if you beat on it and don't take care of it, it will blow up on you.

In 2012 a technical update was APPLIED to the N63 engine and not " released in the 2013 model " NO it doesnt say that... thats your own opinion. Resulting in the N63TU variants also known as N63B4401.the main upgrade was the additional of valvotronic,other changes include revised turbocharger,removal of the blow off valves,lighter pistons,forget connecting rods and cranckshaft,additional of valves cover labyrinth oil catch/return system,new valves stem steal,revised fuel system, and additional of a second cooler pump. So dont scare me now...come one man Beside since i bought the car is been now almost 2 years and the only issues i have had with my car is ( air bag light ,traction light and engines light are on and i am taking it next week for diagnostic) other than that STILL with those lights on on the instrument cluster,the car drives strong ,smooth shifting and very quiet.
Have you heard of or dealt with the aftermath of this issue where the oil pressure relief valve is accidentally thrown out during oil changes on the n63's? Evidently, the retainer clips at the bottom of the oil filter cover become brittle and break off and then if not paying attention, the pressure relief valve gets tossed out with the old filter. Anyway thanks for what you do... you have the most thorough and balanced technical reviews of BMW's and what to expect of them out there. Keep it up!

I wish this video was out in 2015 when I bought a 2012 X5 50 with 50,000 miles from a BMW dealer through the CPO program after it came out of a 3 year lease. First and foremost, I loved the car. It was my 3rd X5 and had all the bells and whistles. It now has 120,000 miles. It goes through oil like a fart through a French horn. Over the last 2 years it has increased consumption to a quart about every 500 miles. I also just found out that both valve cover gaskets are starting to leak. Nothing to do now but nurse it along and trade it in in about a year or so. I understand that the majority of oil consumption comes from the poorly engineered valve stem seals. But at the current value of the car, that is a ridiculous repair expense since it is probably more than the value of the car.
I had an Audi that had mechanical problems which Audi took care of under a recall. But like BMW the new parts that they used to replace the old ones were no different than the old parts that broke down. So several months later I had the same issues all over again. A lot of BMW owners with this engine have had the same problem the second time around after spending thousands of dollars getting it all fixed. The point is the "new"replacement parts that they put in have the same issues as the old ones because it's the same thing just brand new. The idea of replacement parts is supposed to mean something that is a completely different design mechanically than the old one that malfunction.
I have a 2010 750i with almost 120,000miles . Original engine and transmission. Just go oil changes regularly make sure spark plugs and coils are doing good . Coolant leak is common so make sure that’s dealt with and should be ok .
@@7mdmd875 don’t know if you already figured it out. Mustang and M550i are complete different cars. Mustang 5L is slightly faster (0-60 3.5s) than M550i (0-60 4.0s) on straight line. Mustang is not a luxury car yet it is very comfortable to drive. M550i is Luxury, roomier, and have actual second row.
@@manofsesame3024 Well, I know they are not comparable cars in general. However, they can be compared in terms of power as they both have similar power outputs. I saw some races between them and the M550 actually smoked the Mustang. Nevertheless, the M550 has the advantage of X-drive (all wheel drive), while the mustang is RWD.
Lovely summary! I have a 2018 M550i with the TU2 @ 38k miles and so far just my coolant lines have been replaced under warranty. Unfortunately I've had issues with the "bulletproof" ZF gearbox though. Guess I'm lucky!
I have a 2011 550i tuned with some upgrades pushing 647HP on the original N63. I change the oil every 3000 miles, I am running an oil valve cooler and a cooler thermostat to keep the heat down significantly. It works. One note. Smoke coming out of the tailpipe can also be the PCV valves. If they are cracked and broken. It will cause smoke. Use thicker motor oil, Forte seal conditioner with every oil change and you'll be good.
To my knowledge the valve stems perish due to heat which in turn leaks oil into the pistons which I suspect is a side effect of the Hot V arrangement. As I am not a mechanic or a BMW owner you can take my suggestion with a grain of salt. I would personally run an Interchiller ( not an Intercooler ) keeping the engine temps down will most likely reduce valve stem depreciation and prevent excessive oil consumption and blue smoke in the exhaust ( in theory ) and improve engine longevity and possibly regain those longer service intervals unless you drive your vehicle on the track
@@SimpleCarGuy Yes sir we are going on 3.5 years as well with the first N63 to run 10s in the qtr mile. Congrats sir ours has been honestly pain free knock on wood!
On the newest n63b, get a lower tstat put in right away. Dealer will never be able to detect this either. This will help to keep temps down. Secondly, if you maintain your car, get Funk turbine inside out blanket. Can install these without taking out the turbos and will help to reduce hot spots and timing reduction for middle cylinders. Just check the blankets during oil changes ( every 3-5k miles!) for oil contamination.
I have a 2014 X6 drive 50i...nothing but problems. It's in the shop right now, engine is toast (bearing rods). I took it to BMW multiple times in 2018 for excessive oil consumption and smoke out the tailpipe. They did the absolute bare minimum to comply with the CCP. The direct result is my engine failure. Multiple issues with multiple components due to the immense heat from the HOT V design. I would avoid any BMW with this engine.
Engine replacement or rebuild is GUARANTEED....... because I just got the engine of my 2016 X5 4.4 Twin Power Turbo V8 rebuild at my local BMW....it's all covered under the extended warranty...so I paid nothing other than the deductible
N63 orginal engine coolant thermostat replacement 90c. Lower psi water cap. Oil change every 7500km. Did not do the oil valve since I live in a 25c average climate. Replace all the water coolant t junction with aluminum t junction. Catch can installed. Use liquid moly oil saver ever 30,000.. never had to top up my oil between service. I use intake cleaner for carbon build up. Every 15,000 km And injector cleaner every 7500 with ptfe

5:33 you made a mistake. The N63TU2 doesnt include model year 2020 for the m550i. The 2020-2023. m550i has the n63tu3. i have a 2020. the extra 75 hp is what made me pay the extra for the 2020 model instead of the 2019
Great content, i have n63 original x5. Luckily small things like coolant lines and gaskets the only issue. Oil consumption is liter per 5-6000kms. Seems Europe has less issues
Best way to keep any and specially this engine healthy is to not rev it high when cold, use 5w-40 oil, and a lower thermostat, these run extremely too hot. BMW cooks their engines in order to get better MPGs
The engine on my 550i 2013 locked out of nowhere all maintenance was up to date no codes on the dash so now thinking up just upgrading the turbos and getting same (v8) but more reliable engine
BMWNA replaced the engine and turbos in my 2011 X5 and I've been fine over the last 20k miles. I change the oil every 3,000 miles, and take it to redline regularly, but I don't dog it and you don't need to in order to get well above 120mph. Downpipes, upgraded turbos and a tune are planned for the spring. Stay away if you don't have the money for maintenance and definitely stay away if you can't warranty the vehicle....
You’re doing it right! Had the turbos replaced, changing oil often and having fun! I did the same thing in mine for 4 years and no issues. Butttt that’s not what people expect to do on a fancy luxury car..
@manofsesame3024 not sure what to tell you. Oil changes are cheap and engines are expensive. For me, that's two oil changes a year. Mine is not my daily and isn't likely ever to be, but it hasn't given me any trouble after the replacement.

Hi there! On a 2016 BMW 550i there shouldn't much more than you need to do other than change oil. If the spark plugs and coils have not been changed, I'd get those changed as well. The rest should be as needed. Congrats on an awesome car (when you get it)!

Get rid of it asap.!!! Anything v8 before 2014/2015 is a no no.! Trust I told you this .!! Just the turbo alone cooks every single rubber seal in that thing and once it’s on it’s on, Third party mechanics don’t want to do the work. It’s too labor intensive. Dickhead BMW dealer want to charge 10k for the work , instead of charging a customer 2k because they know it’s their fault they build a shitty engine . BMW should have replaced n63 with tu’s for all of its customers. Care package is bullshit.! A bandaid on a bad wound .! For anybody I’d suggest once a year.put deal conditioner in the engine drive for two weeks and then get an oil change
I’ve got the same car year and model as you. No issues at all. Alpina redesigned the heart of this engine to make it live longer. It’s got upgrades to basically everything that’s gone bad in the n63 engines. Alpina took care of it all. Just do oil change frequently for better performance 👍🏽

I have X5 M 2011 with only 50K miles on it but it has multiple issues including engine overheat, fuel pump, misfire, etc. As you mentioned BMW came up originally with their "Customer Care Package" but that was years ago. Do you think they will still perform the same service after all these years if the previous owner hasn't done it yet?
I have owned the E70 N63 since 2016 now. I can attest that it is WORST engine I have ever seen in my life. I had ALL of the issues and then more ( valve cover gaget and knock sensors). It ended up blowing up and destroying the rod bearings. I was forced to replace it with a new one because I had been left with a worthless piece of %*=÷. Dont buy it. Just dont
Real talk., that original n63 is nothing but horror The tu is a bit better….but you still have to maintain them like babies. Get a car with the tu3 if u can and save yourself the headaches .! Once a year put some sort of seal conditioner in their when you 500 miles from an oil change

2012 650i - never an engine problem. Still runs and looks new. Regular maintenance, timely service, no abuse of the car is a key to happy ownership.

He meant it was upgraded in 2012, but released in the 2013 model. You still have the original N63 in your car

I wish this video was out in 2015 when I bought a 2012 X5 50 with 50,000 miles from a BMW dealer through the CPO program after it came out of a 3 year lease. First and foremost, I loved the car. It was my 3rd X5 and had all the bells and whistles. It now has 120,000 miles. It goes through oil like a fart through a French horn. Over the last 2 years it has increased consumption to a quart about every 500 miles. I also just found out that both valve cover gaskets are starting to leak. Nothing to do now but nurse it along and trade it in in about a year or so. I understand that the majority of oil consumption comes from the poorly engineered valve stem seals. But at the current value of the car, that is a ridiculous repair expense since it is probably more than the value of the car.
I had an Audi that had mechanical problems which Audi took care of under a recall. But like BMW the new parts that they used to replace the old ones were no different than the old parts that broke down. So several months later I had the same issues all over again. A lot of BMW owners with this engine have had the same problem the second time around after spending thousands of dollars getting it all fixed. The point is the "new"replacement parts that they put in have the same issues as the old ones because it's the same thing just brand new. The idea of replacement parts is supposed to mean something that is a completely different design mechanically than the old one that malfunction.

I have a 2010 750i with almost 120,000miles . Original engine and transmission. Just go oil changes regularly make sure spark plugs and coils are doing good . Coolant leak is common so make sure that’s dealt with and should be ok .

@@7mdmd875 don’t know if you already figured it out. Mustang and M550i are complete different cars. Mustang 5L is slightly faster (0-60 3.5s) than M550i (0-60 4.0s) on straight line. Mustang is not a luxury car yet it is very comfortable to drive. M550i is Luxury, roomier, and have actual second row.
@@manofsesame3024 Well, I know they are not comparable cars in general. However, they can be compared in terms of power as they both have similar power outputs. I saw some races between them and the M550 actually smoked the Mustang. Nevertheless, the M550 has the advantage of X-drive (all wheel drive), while the mustang is RWD.

Lovely summary! I have a 2018 M550i with the TU2 @ 38k miles and so far just my coolant lines have been replaced under warranty. Unfortunately I've had issues with the "bulletproof" ZF gearbox though. Guess I'm lucky!
I have a 2011 550i tuned with some upgrades pushing 647HP on the original N63. I change the oil every 3000 miles, I am running an oil valve cooler and a cooler thermostat to keep the heat down significantly. It works.
One note. Smoke coming out of the tailpipe can also be the PCV valves. If they are cracked and broken. It will cause smoke.
Use thicker motor oil, Forte seal conditioner with every oil change and you'll be good.
What coils do you use because I have a 2016 550i and was thinking about buying eldor coils before I tune
@@maddogyoyo228 eldors are the best. Those are what I currently have. Also if you tune it. Run NGK step 2 colder plugs.

To my knowledge the valve stems perish due to heat which in turn leaks oil into the pistons which I suspect is a side effect of the Hot V arrangement. As I am not a mechanic or a BMW owner you can take my suggestion with a grain of salt. I would personally run an Interchiller ( not an Intercooler ) keeping the engine temps down will most likely reduce valve stem depreciation and prevent excessive oil consumption and blue smoke in the exhaust ( in theory ) and improve engine longevity and possibly regain those longer service intervals unless you drive your vehicle on the track
But we still love them when there in great working order! Nice vid.

On the newest n63b, get a lower tstat put in right away. Dealer will never be able to detect this either. This will help to keep temps down. Secondly, if you maintain your car, get Funk turbine inside out blanket. Can install these without taking out the turbos and will help to reduce hot spots and timing reduction for middle cylinders. Just check the blankets during oil changes ( every 3-5k miles!) for oil contamination.
About 20k on the new engine in my E70 so far so good since I’ve had it in March only thing I had to deal was a HPFP

I have a 2014 X6 drive 50i...nothing but problems. It's in the shop right now, engine is toast (bearing rods). I took it to BMW multiple times in 2018 for excessive oil consumption and smoke out the tailpipe. They did the absolute bare minimum to comply with the CCP. The direct result is my engine failure. Multiple issues with multiple components due to the immense heat from the HOT V design. I would avoid any BMW with this engine.
Engine replacement or rebuild is GUARANTEED....... because I just got the engine of my 2016 X5 4.4 Twin Power Turbo V8 rebuild at my local BMW....it's all covered under the extended warranty...so I paid nothing other than the deductible
N63 orginal engine coolant thermostat replacement 90c. Lower psi water cap. Oil change every 7500km. Did not do the oil valve since I live in a 25c average climate.
Replace all the water coolant t junction with aluminum t junction.
Catch can installed.
Use liquid moly oil saver ever 30,000.. never had to top up my oil between service.
I use intake cleaner for carbon build up. Every 15,000 km
And injector cleaner every 7500 with ptfe

5:33 you made a mistake. The N63TU2 doesnt include model year 2020 for the m550i. The 2020-2023. m550i has the n63tu3. i have a 2020. the extra 75 hp is what made me pay the extra for the 2020 model instead of the 2019

Great content, i have n63 original x5. Luckily small things like coolant lines and gaskets the only issue. Oil consumption is liter per 5-6000kms. Seems Europe has less issues

Best way to keep any and specially this engine healthy is to not rev it high when cold, use 5w-40 oil, and a lower thermostat, these run extremely too hot. BMW cooks their engines in order to get better MPGs

The engine on my 550i 2013 locked out of nowhere all maintenance was up to date no codes on the dash so now thinking up just upgrading the turbos and getting same (v8) but more reliable engine
BMWNA replaced the engine and turbos in my 2011 X5 and I've been fine over the last 20k miles. I change the oil every 3,000 miles, and take it to redline regularly, but I don't dog it and you don't need to in order to get well above 120mph.
Downpipes, upgraded turbos and a tune are planned for the spring.
Stay away if you don't have the money for maintenance and definitely stay away if you can't warranty the vehicle....
You’re doing it right! Had the turbos replaced, changing oil often and having fun! I did the same thing in mine for 4 years and no issues. Butttt that’s not what people expect to do on a fancy luxury car..
Every 3,000 miles would be a bit annoying tho. That’s like a maintenance before and after every trip across states back and forth.

For me, that's two oil changes a year. Mine is not my daily and isn't likely ever to be, but it hasn't given me any trouble after the replacement.

Hi there! On a 2016 BMW 550i there shouldn't much more than you need to do other than change oil. If the spark plugs and coils have not been changed, I'd get those changed as well. The rest should be as needed. Congrats on an awesome car (when you get it)!
Watch out for purchasing in IL. From what I've read they have different lemon laws with titleing.

N63B is the code on every 50i engine. If your car is an M850i later than 2018 it should be the Tu3.

I’ve got the same car year and model as you. No issues at all. Alpina redesigned the heart of this engine to make it live longer. It’s got upgrades to basically everything that’s gone bad in the n63 engines. Alpina took care of it all. Just do oil change frequently for better performance 👍🏽

Hi Roland! I'm not familiar with the 2.3 as they don't sell those here. As for the 3.0. Which 3.0 is it? What's the model? They had a couple 3 liter engines.

It can be both, you have to see what month it was manufactured and if it's LCI or not. (Pre facelift or after).

All N63 engines are twin turbo and are 4.4l (exception being China where it was detuned to 4.0l)

I would definitely go with the 2014 as long as the maintenance items have been done properly. Even with higher mileage.

I have X5 M 2011 with only 50K miles on it but it has multiple issues including engine overheat, fuel pump, misfire, etc.
As you mentioned BMW came up originally with their "Customer Care Package" but that was years ago. Do you think they will still perform the same service after all these years if the previous owner hasn't done it yet?

I have owned the E70 N63 since 2016 now. I can attest that it is WORST engine I have ever seen in my life. I had ALL of the issues and then more ( valve cover gaget and knock sensors). It ended up blowing up and destroying the rod bearings. I was forced to replace it with a new one because I had been left with a worthless piece of %*=÷. Dont buy it. Just dont

The tu is a bit better….but you still have to maintain them like babies.
Get a car with the tu3 if u can and save yourself the headaches .!
