    Well... I just installed a "Radar 195/65R16" car tire on my 2003 Goldwing. It was tight but got it in place without any prying tools. Looks good too. Also installed Eco beads for balancing.

      How good do the beads balance the tire?

      @@akorotney When I installed the tire, I made sure the "yellow" dot was by the valve stem. With that in place and the balancing beads, there is absolutely no wobble or vibration.

    Yogi:
    Funny thing I've noted all the biggest Naysayers on Darksiding were doctrinaire "in the box thinkers":
    0% had tried Darksiding yet were cocksure it would fail !
    Yet, those who HAD & were doing it, the vast majority were pleasantly surprised and vowed to keep on Darksiding.
    As usual, ignore the "negative Nancies" and keep on riding !
    I've got a 145/60R13 Michelin Compact on my 2006 Suzuki Burgman 409 Maxi-Scoot.
    Superior ride, handling, comfort & confidence vs the uber short lived MC tire.
    I'll never mount a rear MC tire again.

      @kellygrant4964 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Nope.. does it "work" yes it does. But all tires are made for redundancy. When you dark side you have no redundancy for the beads. It does put you at more of a risk. Also because of how it is built the car tire will make you countersteer more. It will also tend to drag you around. Basically handling compared to a motorcycle tire is shit. Beyond all that if you get into any accident and it is found that you are riding dark side... you will not be covered. Period. So if you want to save a little bit of money at the risk of your ride.. well that is something only you have to weigh.

    Nice job!
    I’m on my 7th CT on my 2005 Triumph Rocket and 2nd on my backup 2015 Rocket.
    I consistently got 25,000 miles out of the GY, Toyo and Rikens and usually swapped them out before long road trips.
    I now run $100 Riken Raptors and pushed the last one to 31,000 miles towing a heavy trailer.
    It could have gone higher but it had a screw in it (NO leak though) and I figured I got my moneys worth out of it.
    As important to the $$ saved, I only had to arrange for ONE tire change on the road instead of FOUR for roundie MC tires.
    I’m also Double DarkSide on both bikes running rear Michelin Road 5’s flipped backwards.
    That tire drops the front to compensate for the smaller diameter CT on the back regaining cornering agility, costs less than OEM MC tires, and they get 18,000+ miles vs 11,000. No brainer there!!

    I had a GL1800 goldwing with a run flat tire. Once I had it seated, I usually ran with air fairly low. My final tire was a dunlop 5000SP. Lot of mileage but finally sold the bike due to a failing transmission. I had to go down on my PSI until it began to wear flat across. I think it was around 30-32 psi.

    Great video, I also went dark side on my 2019 Road Glide Ultra, I have low miles less than 2 thousand on the darkside, but love it. When you get the tire wet and then park n the garage you see the huge difference in tread width. What I wonder is, the braking distance may be greatluy improved with a wider back tire. Maybe. I do know traction in loose conditions is a lot better.

    I'm Darkside on my '02 Goldwing and really like it. been on the same tire for the past 3.5 seasons (about 13k miles) at 41psi and it still has a lot of tread left. Here is my thoughts on it.... More load capacity, Wider contact patch, cheaper than a MC tire. Miles per tire? as long as I get at least what I got out of a regular MC tire I'm well ahead of the game just due to cost. If I get more miles, even better. When I ren an MC tire I used Avon Venom's and got 18k out of them, based on tread i should easily exceed that with the cheap Achillies ATR sport I have on now. People say I'll get more miles out of it if I lower the pressure... I say "so?" 41psi is what I like and if I only get 20k I can buy 3 more of the same tire and only spend what I would have on 1 MC tire. But for me, it's the load rating I like the most. MC tires load rating was 800lbs, CT is 1300lbs..... When I'm loaded and 2 up on a trip, I easily exceed the 800lb weight.

    You know I have seen one guy who swore by running a car tire on the rear of his harley who never had any problems I wish I would have asked him which tire he ran. I have thought about it because car tires are usually radial ply not bias ply there are a lot of good points to radial tires. 15k or more out of a rear tire I would be thrilled. As for inflation I was taught rule of thumb on all tires is if you want to run lower pressure avoid anything under 8psi under what is specified on the sidewall. Could be wrong yet if I remember correctly over in I think Norway running a car tire on the rear of a harley has been popular for a long time. Thanks for showing the contact and wear this is really neat.
    Dick Allen years ago ran according to an old magazine I have ran a 155/15 Pirelli tire on a 12 spoke magnesium racing wheel on the rear so now I am really curious about trying this or seeing how possible it would be for me.

    Running a Yokohoma Avid Envigor in my Valkyrie. Mostly happy with it. Much longer life than any of the MT's I've run, but still the center is wearing faster than I expected too. I wonder if 40 psi is a touch high and that's doing it? Or may have to do with my heavy wrist? Lol
    Bike carves mountain roads like no bodies business with that Car tire mounted. Handles differently, but it definitely handles.

    • @YogisCycleService
      @YogisCycleService  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      See, that’s great feedback right there. From what I hear people are telling me that’s a touch too high PSI but to me if that’s where you like the ride then who cares what the PSI is and if the center wears a touch faster.

  • @jeffreycash3662

    I have found only minor merit in the MT propagandists warnings on dark siding. And if I used the minimum amount of common sense while riding I found no reason to avoid a CT. I found the tire I use on my ‘06 Goldwing, was easy, cheaper, way more mileage, stopped nicer and better handling in most situations. I used Dyna beads for balancing without any issues. I found more wear in the middle probably due to too much air pressure. Finally the added circumference corrected Honda’s pitiful speedometer. I’m all in on a CT. I agree it should be used by a seasoned rider. Further I would not advise putting a CT on every cycle. But for a touring bike….I’d have no problem.

  • @flyurway
    @flyurway 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I put an Austone Taxi tire on my Valkyrie Interstate. I can't even remember how long ago it was but to my knowledge you can't even get them anymore it's been so long. Probably around 2014. Also don't remember what the mileage was either (I know, nice going!). But I can tell you it's got at LEAST 30K on it so far and it still passes inspection! Only issue is that it's getting kind of worn flat across the tread, really is time to change it anyway, I just haven't really ridden the past 5 years so I don't give a shit. In any case, in almost 250K of motorcycling the past 35 years, I've never had a rear tire last longer than 10K on anything I've owned (usually about 7K). Show me any MT with even 15K on it and I'll show you cords!

      @@YogisCycleService Actually I'm not crazy for it either. I liked that it was about an inch or so taller because these damn Valyries are geared so low they get worse gas mileage than some cars, which I think is ridiculous. I did pick up about 3 mpg and it wears like iron, but I'm looking forward to something different next time. Will never go back to a MT on a cruiser though!

    On a car, wear in the centre means pressure is too high, but maybe the 41psi you use gives a better, rounder profile? Did you experiment with lower pressures? Lower pressure might mean better wear spread and less breaking in, to get some flex.

    Interesting write up. My bike is a 2011 Softail. I have just over 63K miles on my bike and about 500 miles on my first car tire, a Michelin 205/50R17, it was $117. The stock tire is 200/55R17. It is odd you mention 20K+ on the Commander II. I've run two sets of commander II. I got about 10K on the first rear tire then only 8K on the second one. The best mileage I've gotten so far is the Dunlop American elite, about 12K. I just pulled off a Commander III with 7K and it is well into the wear bars. I don't do rides with groups, I don't have time. I commute with my bike and average 300 miles a week, so I cam barely getting a year out of a rear tire and sometimes not that much. I don't burn out seldom go over 70-MPH. At 500+ miles my dark side tire feels like it is close to being broken in. If I get 20K on it that would be a 100% improvement. Also I found slow sharp turns to be more manageable with the dark side tire. It will be interesting to see how it goes. I change my own tires so no problem there and I'm running 40 psi. 🙂

      Sure. I have used them for a total of 250,000 miles on various machines. 124,000 on my current Goldwing alone. Besides the cheaper cost is safety. If you use a run-flat design, not only will you never have a sudden deflation such a blow out, but if your tire does get a puncture not only will it not go flat on you but you can wait until you get to your destination to have it fixed. That's what did. Twice. And I _adore_ the smooth ride that I get. So much better than I even thought it would be. I can still corner hard enough to grind the footpegs so that's not a issue either. I was hesitant to try darksiding at one time but was over 20 years ago. Sure no hesitation anymore! 👍
