Vildhjarta has been slept on for so long. I remember finding them over 10 years ago when they released Omnislash. Slowly but surely they've been gaining traction everywhere.
In general, i havent really heard any american or english band get close to the feel of the original thall from Scandinavia until Reflections latest singles. Other bands have given us great takes on thall, dont get me wrong. Nadir from Black Tongue is a great album that I would call Thall, the idea of infusing the “foreign” feeling riffs, excessively low tuning, blackened chord progressions, making guitars sound like alien instruments from thall and combining it with the feel of funeral doom and the chromatic nature of their hardcore roots was a genius way to bring freshness to the formula, but anyone trying to get close to Vildhjartas and HLBs sound has always fallen short.
@@33savage70 Ouhhhlala, looks like I got some lil brand simps triggered. Its fucking weird that someones opinion of something you like causes so much insecurity. I love RGs. I couldnt care less when someone points out they are just pointy strats. Those inner bevels look ugly as fuck to me. Get over it boys.
The reason those high fret low strings sound great is because of the same reason small gauges sound great. Thall is very opposite to djent. Djent is tight and compressed while thall is loose and phat. The more wobbly the note sounds the lower the note sounds in frequency. I think what Jonny is trying to say is that even though the notes are the same, the oscillation of the looser strings has wider and slower vibrations, giving it that heavy wobbly sound.
Notice how “Johnny” always wears long sleeves and Andrew wears short sleeves? The tattoos would be a dead giveaway lol. *edit: corrected spelling on tattoos lol.
I also use 1/4 or 1/8 to write. 2/4 and 2/8 are also good for switching between 4/4 and 3/4 or triplet rhythms. Its easier to write by feel, without the restrictions of time signatures and measures
Technically, Daniel Bergstrom is the godfather of thall because he wrote all Masstaden. He also teached to Calle Thomer how to thall. Buster was and is a big fan from Vildhjarta and that's what HLB came from with his own style.
heh, .74 gauge string (for F#/E) on a 26.5" scale doesnt feel great, and im having tuning instabilities, but it does the job I guess. Just Tune after every take you do, and intonate your guitar I guess
Honestly, I haven't been able to find very many good lesson/tutorial videos on how to thall, but this one is the bees knees. I love this. Thank you for this.
24 fret more likely sounds a bit more dissonant because of micro intonation issues and making a high note with a thick string , which is more sensitivy to how you press the string goes a little bit sharp. Combining those aspects makes a more unique tonality
The primary reason is because of inharmonicy. Essentially, the overtones the string is making actually become more and more out of tune as the scale length to string thickness ratio decreases. The stiffer the vibrating medium, the more dissonant with itself it becomes.
I clicked on this ready to see why my favorite metal style was being crapped on and it turned out to be an awesome video talking about how to write Thall. I loved that tune you guys put together. Great lesson but this is the internet so I'm obligated to weigh in with a bit of vocabulary nitpick. "Tonality" generally refers to a melodic and harmonic pitch collection, for example the major and minor scales would be said to have major and minor tonality. What I think you were actually trying to say most if not all of the times that word came up was "tone," which casually (especially in guitar circles) can be taken to mean the "timbre" or textural quality of the notes. For example playing in different octaves because they have a different sound quality aside from the obvious pitch differences. Obviously without being able to read your mind I can't confirm that this is the case but it definitely seemed to make more sense to substitute the latter just about every time you said the former, so I'm going to assume this correction will be very useful and a good use of my time.
