I will never get over the fact that Harlan was essentially a victim of his own overdramatic nature. He got to the age where he wasn't afraid to die but was titillated by the idea of dying in a cool way while helping a friend. When being a theater kid comes back to bite you in the behind. Lol
Christopher Plummer was outstanding in the film because I think Harlan knew! He commented how this would be a great way to murder someone and went to write it down. When he realized the life saving medication was gone I believe Harlan knew someone had switched them, knew it was Ransom, as Ransom was the only one that knew Marta was receiving Harlan's inheritance. The acting here is so great! Also, as Harlan mentioned earlier in their conversation, he wanted to set his family straight before he died and this was his way. And, he didn't fear death. Harlan knew Marta would beat Ransom. That's why Marta always winning at GO was so significant. Thoughts? I think I just like this theory better. For Harlan and for Marta.!

"Something is a foot in this whole affair...And the truth falls at my feet." He's trying to get Marta to notice so he can see her reaction.
This movie is great for a many number of reasons, but probably the thing I love most about it is that it switches genres twice and it does so in such a fantastic way. At the beginning it's a whodunnit, but then when Benoit Blanc is interviewing Marta and has the coin flip, the movie switches to a crime drama by convincing us that Marta is in fact the killer and now we're watching how she's going to get away with it. But, then when Marta is preparing to give her confession to the Thromby family, and Benoit Blanc has his rant and ultimately recommends the death of Harlan be ruled as a suicide, we're back to a whodunnit because there's apparently more information we're not in on that proves Marta's innocence and condemns someone else.
Well said. Also I think it has one of the most important qualities of all genres: humor. You can get away with so many things when you convince the audience that it was done for comedy. Getting spotted by grandma and her asking about Ransom is played off so well that you don't even think about that line being incredibly important.

Such a great movie, and Jen picked up on a ton of details immediately! One of my favorite small details that subtly shows the personality/character of the family is that they keep saying Marta is from different South American countries when they bring it up. They don't even know the real answer, and to them it's all the same anyway. She was described as being from Paraguay, Uruguay. and Brazil all at different points in the movie.
My theory is that her family is from either Uruguay or Paraguay and that one of them just misremembered because they kind of sound similar and also that ransom just said brazil because he was throwing out of random country. I mean the odds of two of the guesses being those two similar sounding countries seems like a pretty big coincidence to me and they never actually say where she's from so I'm guessing they both knew it was one of those two and just made a 50/50 guess
Jen is the first person I've seen think its Marta AFTER we see her recollection of the events in the interrogation halfway through the movie (that Marta clearly doesn't share with Blanc and the two cops and therefore is not a lie she is telling somebody but actually what happened).
@@WillTaft fr it honestly rubbed me the wrong way especially after the guy said that thing about “making the daughter of an undocumented immigrant the villain” all sarcastically 💀
Love Knives Out. The best mysteries are the ones you can solve yourself before the big reveal. This gives you all the clues to figure it out before the will reading. You can know the bottles were switched because of the really heavy foreshadowing in the death scene, but also because Marta mentions a morphine overdose causing extreme drowsiness. Harlan was completely aware and lucid the whole time, showing no signs of an overdose. You can figure out Ransom switched them mainly because of the dogs barking. The movie tells us the dogs were barking in the night, and the only character in the movie they bark at is Ransom, so you know he came back at night. Plus great grandma mentioning Ransom being back "again."
Normally when you see a cast with this many big names it's a bit of a let down because it's hard for everyone to get enough "me time" without feeling like they're too involved or underutilized. This is a fantastic cast with some really great actors........and they all get the perfect amount of screen time. This is such an entertaining movie and I've seen it several times. Normally a mystery/whodunit gets spoiled after a watch or 2, but this one is just so well done and fun that I don't mind coming back to it.
This entire cast is phenomenal, but I think Michael Shannon might just be my favourite performer in this film. He gets many of the film's best lines (and actually improvised quite a few of them), and his delivery is absolutely hysterical
HOW ABOUT SOME MORE COOKIES, HUGH?! YOU WANT SOME MORE COOKIES?! Hey, maybe Harlan left you a nice cold glass of milk in the will, ASSHOLE!!! Even better, at that moment, you can see Chris Evans is trying his best not to crack up.
Benoit Blanc keeps give the viewers hints about Marta's shoe by repeatedly using "foot" references, including "the game is a foot." I always wonder if it's just for the audience (playing fair and pointing to a clue), him having fun with Marta, or him testing her guilt or innocence in some way. If she's guilty would she unconsciously look at her feet to see if there was something on her.
Another great Rian Johnson movie is Brick. It's one of his earlier movies but is still done great. It's both written and directed by Johnson, and it is fantastic.
the reason benoit blanc's accent is so different from the rest of the characters, is because he's based on hercule poirot, a Belgian detective from agatha Christie books (which are where a lot of who done it mystery stories are based off of, including this film and the sequel) like murder on the orient express and death on the river nile. it also explains why he's the only returning character in the sequel, glass onion.
remembered what Harlan said about Ransom, “He plays life like it’s a game without consequences until you can no longer tell the difference between a stage prop and a real knife.” Brilliant foreshadowing! when Marta threw up on Ransom that was actually baby food mixed with water. Knowing that makes it easier to watch. The movie was an homage to Agatha Christie novels. Have you read Agatha Christie? Her works broke the rules of the mystery genre; she became known as The Queen of Crime. Her novels go from 1920-1970s. Actress who played Marta gave a phenomenal performance! Glad they cut away to her reaction to the suicide; the look of horror on her face was outstanding! Like Blanc said, Harlan’s demise was the result of “a tragedy of errors.” When he pointed out how Marta could visually spot the differences between the morphine and the correct medication, he said it so quickly. Needed subtitles for that. You’ll enjoy Glass Onion as well.
When Blanc first meets Marta he is talking to her and you can see that Craig looks down at her feet, looks back up, continues talking, but he gets this surprised look on his face for just a moment and look down again for just a second. That's Blanc noticing the blood on her shoe. He realizes at that point that at the very least she was in the room when Harlan died.
Jen clocked this so fast, would love to see her/you guys reacting to more murder mysteries like this. What a genius (Edited: Jen keeps bouncing back and forth between right and wrong guesses lol this is so fun)
Speaking of non Bond Daniel Craig films, If you’ve not seen “Logan Lucky” I’d recommend it. Steven Soderbergh directed, Adam Driver, Channing Tatum and of course Daniel Craig.
I love how Jen was literally shown exactly what happens to Harlan, and yet she still think that a certain character is guilty the whole way through. Sigh.
Upon my most recent (of many) rewatches of this movie, I noticed something that I hadn't noticed before when it comes to the scene after Ransom has been arrested and Marta is needing to make her appointment with the "blackmailer." If you notice, Blanc is talking about how there's one piece of evidence that will reveal the whole case and how he needs to find that one piece. You're more focused on Marta needing to make this deadline that you don't realize that he's basically speaking to her subconscious, amping up the drama and tension that she needs to find this evidence before him. And what does Marta do? She literally drives him right to where that evidence is. He clearly was playing mind games with her at that moment, and I freaking love it!
The reason Blanc was at the piano at the beginning is because he was there to put the detective back on track, hence when Joni is starting to talk about her self care business he presses a note on the piano to say " get back to the investigation"
Two movies came to mind watching this reaction... "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" (2011) with Daniel Craig, and "Murder on the Orient Express" (2017) with Kenneth Branagh and many other known stars. Have you seen these? :D
Love this movie. Joni was played by Australian actor Toni Collette, famously from 6th sense, where she was nominated for an Academy award for best supporting actress. I mention this because she was in the amazing Australian movie "Cosi", also starring David Wenham and Barry Otto, and I can't recommend enough that you watch it. Considering that we did a film study on it at school and I'm still recommending it should show you how good it is.
Knives Out is such a fantastic movie, and you really hit it on the head when saying that it's very rewatchable. A number of movies are good, but not good enough to watch for a second or third time, but I think Knives Out is one that gets better the more you watch it. You catch little things you had missed during previous viewings and it draws the story together in a more refined and well thought out package.
This is one of my favorite movies of all time and I'm glad you guys decided to watch it. I recommend you guys watch the show "Defending Jacob" starring Chris Evans.
Blanc always new that Marta was a suspect, he even hints this to her with the 'afoot' line after noting the blood on her shoes, but his perceptive insight into her character leads me to believe that while she knew more than she was letting on, he still didn't believe that she was the murderer. Hence why he has her accompany him as they try to puzzle what exactly happened.

As someone who has seen Star Wars, he's still an incredible director. He takes some big swings with the story (which means they don't connect with everybody), but it's maybe the best looking film in the franchise, and he gets maybe a career best performance out of Mark Hamill. Noah Segel, who played Trooper Wagner, recently wrote/directed/starred in an interesting film on Shudder called "Blood Relatives", about him being tracked down by a daughter he didn't know he had. Kind of a family drama of them learning about each other, how their lives will now be, him learning to be a father, etc except........he is a vampire. Very interesting and fun film.
Riki Lindhome was in a few Big Bang Theory shows, 2 and a Half Men. Plus, several movies. Riki and Kate Micucci formed a singing group Garfunkel and Oates. She is also in the Netflix show Wednesday
When Benoit is interrupting Marta's confession to the family, the kind of dumbstruck looks on the family members' faces was because it was the first time that they were hearing the "Foghorn Leghorn accent" It is one of my favorite fun facts about this incredible movie.
Fell in love with this. I love classic mansion murder mystery stuff. After Clue, there just aren't enough of them. This is fantastic. Glass Onion is just great as well.
Re: Comment of the Day - there's a screenwriting handbook called, "Saves The Cat", that basically is able to categorize any movie into one of 10 different genres, such as Monster in the House, Dude with a Problem, The Fool Triumphant, etc. Fascinating to read and there are follow-up books in the series that break down popular movies into these type of genres or categories.

Hands down, one of 2019's best. So well crafted with the ensemble cast and good storytelling. Christopher Plummer as Harlan the author. This was his final film role. He passed away in 2020. "No Time To Die" was the next film that Daniel Craig (Blanc) & Ana de Armas (Marta) work on afterwards. The sequel; 'Glass Onion' is worth the watch.. It had a one-week release in theaters before streaming a month later. A last-minute announcement and I wish that I saw it earlier.
Lived in a apartment first floor building when I was like...6 in 1996 and we had a mouse situation and tried to kill it with mouse traps lol. One day all the electricity in the flat went off and me and my parents we could smell something bad coming from behind the fridge and there was smoke. Dad pulled it away and a mouse had basically run/tried to get through the wires/circuits or whatever behind the fridge and basically fired itself the poor little bastard. Thats...thats one way to go lol.
It took my second watch to realize Linda's old notes from her dad all had burn marks, showing that heat does reveal the secret message and that it was not a bluff.
I always thought Benoit kept Marta around to keep an eye on her. He knew she was somehow involved, but he also knew that she couldn't (truly) lie. She knew the family secrets about Harlan cutting off family members and why he was doing it, so she was a trusted confidant of Harlan.
Hamilton was referenced in the film which reminds me you two should definitely react to Hamilton on Disney+. It’s a one off thing so not a big commitment, something different than what you usually do, and it’ll get a ton of views for you guys…and it’s phenomenal!
Fun fact about Ana de Armas....when she got the role for War Dogs with Jonah Hill and Miles Teller, she could hardly speak any English. She used her first two English speaking roles (Knock Knock and War Dogs) to help her learn the language in like TWO YEARS.
You guys have to watch Girl with the Dragon Tattoo at least the David Fincher one. I feel like it's right up Jen's alley since it's directed by the same person who made Se7en
I never suspected Marta for the same reasons that Holden didn’t. No way they were going to make the immigrant, working class woman the villain to a family of rich douches 🤣 Revealing halfway through the movie that Harlan did actually kill himself was a bold move. Also agree with Holden about the political themes in the movie and the intention behind it. Even Meg, the one who appears to be the most “righteous” of the family is willing to throw Marta under the bus for money in the end.
Hate that you just blanket statement called everyone who dislikes what he did with Star Wars a toxic fan. I loved knives out and glass onion but I also despise his Star Wars entry and that is a legitimate criticism and stain on his career worth pointing out when discussing his accolades. Truly disappointed to be called a toxic fan for simply not enjoying a movie he made poorly.
RJ made a great film with Ep8, but it told a poor Star Wars story. The effects and acting and editing were fantastic in Ep8. The story was not good enough, which made the rest of the pieces fall apart. I think hating on RJ simply because of his honest effort makes any person toxic. All RJ needed to do to avoid the script issue was reach out to Kevin Feige to run that script by him for a quick once over pass as a favor, but he didn’t. And then everybody burns him in effigy for all time. It’s just not cool. People make mistakes.
@@cassieo making a multi billion dollar mistake is crazy. What he did with Luke wasn’t a mistake it was a spit in the face to Star Wars. I disagree that the story was good to begin with and the effects were laughable. Sure there was eye candy but it fell apart the moment you looked in detail at anything. You can call all of these things out without actual hate. Do I hate him? No. Do I love his works in knives out? Yes. Will I continue watching his works if they are good? Yes. Does that excuse his murder of many peoples most beloved childhood series? No. The emotional black mail of calling someone toxic for their legitimate dislike of a movie for very legitimate reasons makes you toxic for trying to impose your blind love of a director on someone who can see their faults. Harsh criticism makes for better directors. It’s obvious he’s learned his lesson and is sticking with what he’s good at. Hopefully he never ruins another franchise again. You can thank the criticism for that. People are well within their rights to say he murdered main line Star Wars and killed any chance the sequel trilogy had at resonating with fans, because he did. You don’t live that down. He will go down in history for that.

Which one was he again (Put the knives down, I don't know every actor's names)

@@AutoPilate Thx, and yes he was awesome
Great react, but watching Jen side eye to your fridge every scene after the mouse incident is top entertainment hahaha.
Now that you've said it, I can't UNSEE IT 😂
YES FINALLY! I asked for this a while ago and I'm so glad you have reacted to it! My excitement is unmeasurable!
Lol Jen is the first person I've seen ever suspect Marta this heavily that's wild
"I have a little bit of a crush on her"(Ana de Armas).
Don't worry Jen, you are not alone there.
Lots of insane twist and turns throughout this movie!
Be sure to check out Knives Out 2: The Glass Onion.
It's "Glass Onion: a Knives Out Mystery"
@@Gesundheit2000 I don’t think it matters, they mean the same thing
Jen clocked this so fast, would love to see her/you guys reacting to more murder mysteries like this. What a genius
(Edited: Jen keeps bouncing back and forth between right and wrong guesses lol this is so fun)
Lol so while Marta did "do it"..she really didn't.
Maybe the British production When a Detective Calls.
Speaking of non Bond Daniel Craig films, If you’ve not seen “Logan Lucky” I’d recommend it. Steven Soderbergh directed, Adam Driver, Channing Tatum and of course Daniel Craig.
LAYER CAKE
Logan Lucky gave us the first southern drawl Daniel Craig. so good!
Congratulations on the baby! So happy for you guys!
I love how Jen was literally shown exactly what happens to Harlan, and yet she still think that a certain character is guilty the whole way through. Sigh.
This is one of the best casts in a movie that actually work together so good from top to bottom
After seeing this, it was really fun to see Daniel Craig and Ana De Armas reunite in No Time To Die. Their chemistry has been great.
:D
If you liked Benoit Blanc in this, you’ll love him even more in Glass Onion. His character really shines in that.
My favorite subtle moment in this movie is the scene with Marta and Ransom in the bar, with Gordon Lightfoot's "Sundown" playing in the background...
This is the first time in a knives out reaction video where the watcher immediately accused Marta of being the antagonist 😮
The mug Ana is holding at the end is a very nice touch. Especially how she's holding it...
I was just checking if yall had ever watched this the other day! Aww yes!
Congratulations on the baby my girlfriend and I just found out we’re having a baby🎉 blessings and love from my family to yours
Congratulations! 🙌🏾
It breaks my heart how long y'all stuck with the one innocent person in the house being a villain.
This is one of my favorite movies of all time and I'm glad you guys decided to watch it. I recommend you guys watch the show "Defending Jacob" starring Chris Evans.
Ah snap. Just finished Glass Onion not too long ago. Really made me wanna watch this. Gotta come back once I do.
I think he wanted to see her reactions to confirm his suspicion that she's innocent.
Would LOVE to see you guys watch Glass Onion, it’s fantastic!
Went into this movie without much info and absolutely enjoyed it! Great cast too! Watched Glass Onion the other day and it was great too.
HUGE CONGRATS on the baby news!!! So happy for you guys. I'm gonna need him to start watching the MCU by at least age 2!! 😂😂
Why would you wish such a horrible fate on someone?
@@NovusIgnis You must be new. We like the MCU here

As someone whose never seen Star Wars, he's an incredible director. He's done Knives Out and Glass Onion and three episodes of Breaking Bad including Fly and Ozymandius.
As someone who has seen Star Wars, he's still an incredible director. He takes some big swings with the story (which means they don't connect with everybody), but it's maybe the best looking film in the franchise, and he gets maybe a career best performance out of Mark Hamill. I think a lot of people confuse disliking a movie for the choices it makes with a movie being "bad".
@@CEWThree I absolutely agree, I know The Last Jedi wasn't everyone's cup of tea (I personally liked it, but I digress), but I feel everyone got so caught up in the controversial storytelling choices that they overlooked everything else about the film, from the performances, to the cinematography, to the editing, to the score, all of which were absolutely phenomenal
Incredible?
A bit overexaggerated.
He can be good, but most of his work(like looper or knives out) is just okay.
@@christianwise637 i wouldnt say that.
Many things(like the bombers), badly written characters(rose, fynn, holdo...) or cheap cgi(the alien-horses)were criticised too.
Its not just some "
Its not just about some "controversial storytelling ideas".
Its just one part.
@@seimen4348 I haven't seen Looper either but imo Knives Out and Glass Onion are yeah incredible. And those two episodes of BrBa are arguably two of the best so
That best part about these movies are rewatches. My third rewatch looking for minor clues made this movie beat out Se7en as my favourite movie
LETS GOOO I've been suggesting this for months!!!!! Loved this movie.
I also feel the same way about Rian. He seems like a great guy and I've said this since the beginning but I loved what he did with The Last Jedi and still believe it's the best in the new trilogy. So much depth and you can tell he knows what he's doing, especially after watching this.
Plus, Congratulations on the pending expansion.
LETS GO!!! This is one of my favorite movies hehehe can’t wait to see what you and Jen think
This movie is amazing. I watch 2nd time because it shows you a clue at background before solving. It was cool to see clues.
I HAVE BEEN WANTING YOU TO REACT TO THIS!!! WOOHOO!! also congratulations on your Pregnancy ❤
When Benoit is interrupting Marta's confession to the family, the kind of dumbstruck looks on the family members' faces was because it was the first time that they were hearing the "Foghorn Leghorn accent" It is one of my favorite fun facts about this incredible movie.
Oh i have been waiting for this!
Jen's description of the plot-twisting in the movie made me think "Kansas City Shuffle" which reminded me that Lucky Number Slevin is a great movie that you guys should watch, if you haven't already.
Lucky number slevin is one of my faves! Great movie👏
Saw this Christmas Eve on a whim completely surprised me one of my favorite film’s period I’ve rewatched it at least 3 times need to rewatch Glass Onion now
Love Knives Out. Be sure to check out Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery. It’s a solid sequel. The mouse conversation was hilarious!Congratulations on Baby Hardman!! 🎉🎉
The sequels not that great.
@@strider9184 it is great
I saw the thumbnail and I screamed "HOLDEN THOMAS HARDMAN I LOVE YOU!".
After this movie, I recommend Logan Lucky - it has Daniel Craig doing a WV accent and Channing Tatum and Adam Driver too.
Chris Evans does an amazing job in this movie. Everyone does. This cast is amazing.
LMAO at Jenna "solving" it after every red herring
Brilliant, and a massive congratulations, detective jen
This is one of my favorite new movies that isn’t a part of a cinematic universe! Also love you guys keep up the awesome videos!
I think I recommended this to you about 2 years ago, finally!!
What rock has Jen been living under that she hasn’t seen all these amazing movies?
It took my second watch to realize Linda's old notes from her dad all had burn marks, showing that heat does reveal the secret message and that it was not a bluff.
I always thought Benoit kept Marta around to keep an eye on her. He knew she was somehow involved, but he also knew that she couldn't (truly) lie. She knew the family secrets about Harlan cutting off family members and why he was doing it, so she was a trusted confidant of Harlan.
Re: the mouse - check your walls and plug any hole you find with steel wool to prevent this from happening again
Michael Shannon is hilarious in this
YES YES YESSSSS. I’ve been wishing you’d watch this eventually!!
yes, one of my favorite movies
The kid from it being a nazi was great casting
You guys have to watch Girl with the Dragon Tattoo at least the David Fincher one. I feel like it's right up Jen's alley since it's directed by the same person who made Se7en
I honestly didnt expect to love thos as much as i did. The film was solid indeed
I was so excited to watch this had to rush home but can finally sit down and watch some more classic hardman content.
That’s why he’s the best detective around - morality, & ethics are sometimes too black & white. He walks a fine line between both in that gray area
He’s just talking about the toxic fans fool. That’s why they’re toxic fans
@@nizzleprizzle9783 he did not make that distinction.

“Enter, Benoit Blanc.” That’s what that mouse said. 😅
As a long time Star Wars fan I was nervous about Johnson directing episode 8, because I wasn’t a fan of Looper. But . . . I f%&$ing loved the Last Jedi! But the way the Star Wars fandom reacted, especially how Kelly Marie Tran was treated . . . it was the first time I’ve ever been ashamed of being a Star Wars fan. As much as I loved the Last Jedi, I wasn’t in a hurry to watch Knives Out. I finally watched it on streaming and absolutely loved it! I fell in love with Ana de Armas. And Daniel Craig’s been my guy crush since Casino Royale and he was great. And I love Glass Onion and can’t wait for the next Benoit Blanc movie.
Considering his comment about noticing Marta's shoe, his comment early on was "the game is afoot" is rather funny.
I see alot of people shitting on Glass Onion but I thought it was good. Its different from the first film but its still fun. There's dumb fun and then there's really crappy films you watch as a gulity pleasure but these films I think were a good fun time.
I just watched knives out for the first time last night and absolutely loved it !
