    I absolutely loved this movie! Christopher Reeve was incredible and I expected nothing less! Loved all the action and I especially enjoyed General Zod, he was hilarious😂"So this is planet HOUSTON?"🤣🤣I literally died when he said that. When Christopher Reeve first got the role of superman he was a skinny guy. The man who played the physical role of Darth Vader was hired as a personal trainer to help him put on some weight and fill out those tights. So Darth Vader trained Superman.

      I LOVE Christopher Reeves and think you should try watching another movie he is in called "Somewhere in Time" it is from the 80's as well but it is a romance movie. I believe you may like it, the movie is a period piece and the visuals and scenery in the movie are beautiful.

    When Christopher Reeve had his accident the little boys in a lot of men where crushed, the Man of Steel, the physical manifestation of one of (If not the) greatest hero ever created was broken. His resolve and will power to keep going, keep fighting despite his injuries were that of KAL-EL himself. He really was Superman!

      Agreed. And When Christopher Reeve died, the world mourned. The headline all over the world "Superman has died." All the news networks everywhere carried it and the world took a breath and sat down and mourned one man. Hadn't seen anything like it again until Robin Williams (Who has Reeve's roommate at Juliard along with Kevin Conroy) passed.

      Now watch Superman 3. Cause Richard Prior stars in it and makes it more comedy. Don't watch the 4th one, cause it's not worth it, the only good scene is the gym and when he keeps switching from Clark to Superman.

      It is so good that it gets repeated in SMALLVILLE when Michael Rosenbaum (who played Lex Luthor in the series) gets possessed by Zod.
      Terence Stamp (who played Zod in the first two films) provides the voice of Jor-El in Smallville. As already noted, Christopher Reeve appears twice on Smallville (after he was paralyzed) and Annette O'Toole who plays Martha Kent played Lana Lang in Superman III.

    My dad met Christopher Reeve when I was in high school, so about 1998 or 1999, and he said he was so impressed by how humble and kind he was. He didn't want people feeling sorry for him, he just wanted to help other people who didn't have the same resources he did. My dad died in 2009, he only lived four months after being diagnosed with incurable and rare cancer, and he said he actually thought a lot about the time he met Christopher Reeve and it gave him some inspiration to accept that life is hardly fair to good people.

  • @weirds0up

    The original plan was to film Superman 1 and 2 at the same time as a cost-saving measure. However, due to a falling out between the director - Richard Donner - and the producers, Donner was fired/quit with about 90% of Superman 2 filmed. The producers brought on Richard Lester and had him re-film a large amount of the film and while doing so he added in a lot more slapstick than in the original version, something that would be dialed up for Superman 3. You really should watch the Donner cut, it's virtually a different movie.

    • @masere
      @masere ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Actually it wasn't the producers who made him reshoot, it was the fact that Lester would not have gotten director credit had he simply completed the remaining 25% or whatever, he needed a certain percentage, so that's why he reshot, and added his own scenes such as the Eiffel Tower scene.

    Their portrayal of Lois was very much rooted in the version from the 1950's tv series The Adventures of Superman (as well as her portrayal in the comics from the beginning until roughly the mid-to-late 1960s) where she was constantly in need of being rescued, constantly trying to prove Superman and Clark were the same person, and constantly trying to trap or trick Superman into marrying her. By the time this movie came out, Lois in the comics was much closer to how she's portrayed in later versions like on the early '90s Lois and Superman show, the late '90s show Smallville, or the current Superman and Lois -- the competent Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter who is an emotional equal power and eventual spouse of Superman and mother to his child(ren).
    A number of the powers portrayed in this movie were solely in these movies or drastically altered from the comics. For instance, in the comics at the time, Superman could travel through time only by travelling at super-speed, not through "rotating the Earth backwards"; for that matter, in the comics, super-speed was the reason for appearing as "duplicates". The telekinesis beam, the weird insignia projection, the amnesia kiss -- all fabricated for the movies and never seen again.
    Still, despite the inaccuracies to the source material, these movies are iconic and highly entertaining, and Christopher Reeve set the bar for how Superman should be played -- taking the character seriously, with compassion, a solid moral compass, and just being everyone's friend. He's Mr. Rogers with super powers, and that's how he should be.

    • @kickballjedi
      @kickballjedi ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Good summary- seems today every superhero needs to be troubled or "badass". Superman should set the standard that no other superhero can meet. I always thought of his goofy powers in the Fortress of Solitude were just special abilities he only had while on his home turf, within his home...

    • @davidgradwell8830
      @davidgradwell8830 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@kickballjedi Agreed! That serene, laid-back persona is totally Superman! Reeves, Reeve and Tim Daly (Superman: The Animated Series) captured that calmness and self-confidence perfectly. Basically, Superman knows that nothing will ever hurt him (well...almost nothing, anyway!) so he naturally is always chill and laid-back. Batman and the Hulk may be permanently pissed, but Superman is always calm, collected and serene.

    • @gmughadam76
      @gmughadam76 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Superman is able to subconsciously manipulate telekinesis to a limited extent in the comic books. Along with that and the ability to manipulate gravitons explains his ability to fly move at super speed and part of his strength and speed for that matter to an extent. Even Modern Age Superman had some form of control over telekinesis that's how they explained the Superman clone Superboy based his powers from . Silver age Superman had limited telepathic abilities including hypnosis which was slightly tweaked for this movie. But the Superman cellophane as Shield was completely the movie. And the duplicates oven self is similar to how the flash does it vibrating his molecules and leaving after images of himself

    Superman I & II were my favourite films when I was a kid. Christopher Reeves is absolutely perfectly cast, and his acting of the two characters and personalities of Superman vs Clark is brilliantly done. He manages to change character in one scene, from the posture and demeanour of a shy, nervous guy and then back to Superman with his confidence and swagger. I was absolutely in love with Superman when I was a kid, but he was a good-looking guy with beautiful blue eyes.
    And the title music by John Williams is fabulous.

    my favourite Lois has got to be the one from the 90s Superman animated Series that was apart of the greater DCAU (DC Animated Universe) along with Batman: The Animated Series, Justice League, Static Shock, Batman Beyond, Justice League Unlimited etc. Think of the MCU and how all the films are connected it's just like that but mostly TV shows and a few films like Batman Mask of the Phantasm. For me it's the best rendition of these characters including Superman and has my favourite Metropolis as well.
    If you didn't really like Lois in the first film I can't imagine you're reaction to her in Man of Steel she's barely even a character in that film or the whole DCEU something I hope James Gunn works on with his new universe. Pull from the DCAU and the comics and I'll be happy.

      Awesome vid Lauren, this was one of my favourite movies growing up. If I’m not mistaken, I believe some of the Superman powers we saw at the end weren’t his typical powers and were instead his abilities behind enhanced by the fortress, in an attempt to level the playing field against the 3 villains. Really glad you enjoyed this movie, curious what you may think of the third movie 😊.

    Lauren, this was a great reaction! I loved quoting this movie growing up. It has a some one-liners that aren't really in the zeitgeist anymore but, "Kneel before Zod!" is one that never gets old for me. It is up there with "Die Autobot!" and "Whose the Master....Sho Nuff!" and "If it bleeds... we can kill it." and "Good morning, Dave." and "I am Dar of the Emarites..." on and on..... The 80s had a whole language of quotes that were used a ton. Nowadays i guess they more like, "you're a wizard Harry" or "now you have my permission to die" what movie quotes are in your current usage?

    i always interpreted the "projections" of him as being a power of his fortress, as it certainly seems related both to the idea of crystals reflecting light as well as the way the krypotians use crystals to store and relay information. but perhaps there is more explained in the extended comic lore that i am unaware of..

    I think you'd like how they depict Lois in Man of Steel, etc. She still gets herself in to situations of her own accord, but it's shown as an extension of being good at her job. The version from the 90s cartoon that popped up to accompany Batman TAS was very much like that, too. Tough talking hard nosed investigative reporter. It also has my favorite gag from Superman, when Clark literally admits exactly what he's doing to her in that "tell the truth because noone will believe you" way in the context of how he gets his stories, for Lois to respond that he's a sick man.

    Highly recommend the Donner Cut. Despite some obvious inconsistencies with test shots etc., being used to fill in gaps, the Donner Cut is much more in sync with the first film. The narrative thread about sons becoming the father, and fathers becoming the son fathers is present and there is a lot more Brando. Much more Bradon. Jor-El plays a huge role in the Donner Cut. That narrative thread is the heart of the two films and the Salkinds removed it from the theatrical cut of Superman II because they were cheap, and notoriously shady, and did not want to pay Brando, so instead Lara is present to guide Kal-El. Lester was brought on primarily for two shitty reasons: 1) To undercut Donner and keep an eye on him, and as a back-up in the inevitable event of an impasse, 2) Lester was willing to undercut a fellow director because he was looking to recoup the money the Salkinds cheated him out of for Four Musketeers. So, in several ways their cut of Superman II is the product of their bad business practices.

    So here is a brief history of what happened between Superman 1 and 2. It also explains certain things about this sequel. Richard Donner was originally hired to direct both movies at the same time. He had a lot of conflicts with the producers (the Salkinds were known to be douchebags) over budget and other things. Donnor was about taking the material seriously. Superman 2 was about 80% shot by the time the first one hit theaters, but Richard Donner was fired - despite the original being a big hit. They replaced him with a director from the world of comedy. The new director had to reshoot some things Donner had done in order to be allowed director credit. This caused a number of interesting tonal shifts because so much slapstick was added that Donner never would have allowed. This also caused Gene Hackman to quit before reshoots, which is why some of Lex's lines (especially near the end) are said off screen or shown from the back of a double's head with an impersonator's voice. Brando refused to be shown in the film at all, which is why you now see Superman's mother and others in the holograms. It also led to them cutting the details on how he got his powers back. The new director also added a few odd Superman powers only ever seen in this movie. You'll notice Lois is wearing a frizzy wig in some shots due to the reshoots.
    Some more fun trivia:
    The Paris scene was added to replace a (much better) scene in Metropolis in order to get a nuclear explosion into space and free Zod. The explosion was originally supposed to come from the missile he sent off into space at the end of the first movie.
    The spinning Earth technique was originally supposed to be how he erased Lois's memory at the end, but it was moved to the first movie to give it a more dramatic finale instead of just being a cliffhanger for 2. This forced the new director to come up with the magic kiss.
    And saying all that, I still love this movie. It has character. The Donner cut is much better story-wise, and it has some scenes that are amazing to have back (particularly some great Christopher Reeve performance moments), but due to the 20% not finished, it has its off segments when it comes to effects, as well as a scene pieced together from audition and rehearsal footage. Definitely worth a watch if you have fallen in love with Reeve's Superman.
    You'll also notice how skinny Reeve was in the audition footage because it was done before he started bulking up. He was 6'4" 180lbs when hired under the agreement he could gain the muscle weight in time. He was well over 200 when they started filming the original and just kept gaining. By the time he shot Superman 3, I think he was over 230.

    Christopher Reeve as Superman is probably the best casting in cinema history. He was an absolute unknown when cast and only had the opportunity because 20 or more actors passed up the role. Those under 50 may not realize this was the first “superhero” movie and at the time comic book heroes were considered exclusively little boy fodder. It is truly visionary how seriously they took the subject matter and how (most) of the effects still look great. What a masterpiece.

    From what I understand, early writers of Superman played pretty fast and loose with what his powers were, and this movie either pulled from those comics or followed the same pattern they did. At this point, super speed, super strength, invulnerability (e.g. to bullets, fire), flight, x-ray vision, heat "vision", cold breath, and maybe also wind breath are pretty solidly canon. Anything else -- like the ability to turn back time, create holographic projections of himself, or erase memories with a kiss -- is extra.

He talks his wife and brother (who are having an affair) to help end his life in a staged home invasion. That’s where the plot takes a twist. He also made a modern remake of the Hitchcock suspense movie “Rear Window” after his real life accident. His footage contains: All of Gene Hackman appearances.
    Prison breakout
    Lois appears younger and not frail as in this version.
    The diner fight scenes (Donner makes a cameo as Lois and Clark pull up)
    The White House (which is sped up)
    Fortress scenes minus depowering, Lara and fortress battle before surrendering to Zod. All of these latter fortress scenes were in this version.
    All of the scenes where Lois and Clark share their own office is in this version. In Donner’s version they sit across from each other with everyone else.
    The returning to the fortress was partially Donner’s
    The Daily Planet invasion was mostly Donner.
    His footage was more on the serious side, while Lester’s was more comical. One of the reasons why there are two different versions of this movie.

    It’s true Superman 1 and Superman 2 were originally supposed to be made at the same time. But the producers (The Salkinds) did director Richard Donner dirty. They fired him midway through production on Superman 2. This was mainly because they didn’t get along, but the Salkinds also didn’t understand special effects and why Donner didn’t want to rush the production, mainly the visual effects that made the of steel look like he could fly. The Salkinds jettisoned most of the material that Donner shot and much of it is lost forever. They kept the Gene Hackman/Ned Beaty footage, that’s about it. They hired Richard Lester and added -The Paris sequence (originally, the explosion from the missle Superman sent into space from the first film freed the three villains), much of the comedy in the fight between Superman and the three villains (such as the guy on roller skates),etc. Most of the cast was not happy that Donner was let go. Gene Hackman refused to return for part 3. Margot Kidder was very vocal about it at the time and the producers reduced her role to just a cameo in Superman 3 as revenge. Thankfully, Richard Donner still had a successful career after that. He made The Goonies, and all 4 Leathal Weapons. And although he didn’t have the budget to make The Donner Cut the way he wanted, in the end he still was able to have his vision realized.

    To answer your questions....the director of the original Superman movie, Richard Donner, was fired after filming much of this sequel, due to disagreements with the producers, and director Richard Lester was brought in to finish. In the early 2000's, due to fan support, Richard Donner was allowed to piece together the closest resemblance to what his original film would have been, using deleted scenes, out-takes and screen tests. The Donner cut also got rid of some of the silliness that fans always had problems with, including the inexplicable powers like levitating objects, teleporting, and the infamous Super-kiss that somehow erases Lois' memory. Those powers were never part of the Superman mythology in the comics. The Donner Cut is really more of a fun fan-experiment, that is worth checking out, but it was a good thing you watched the Theatrical cut first, since that is the official version.
    I would recommend the 2012 The Man of Steel. It was a great re-telling of the Superman story, and Henry Cavil was almost on par with Christopher Reeve, in my opinion.

      Yes, the memory wipe was really a fudge. Companies are more active about their copyright now and permission has to be sought for everything little thing. A lot of older movies filmed in Times Square and other parts of New York City just captured what was in the location.

    Christopher Reeve can rock the hell out of a beige cardigan.

    I grew up with George Reeves (no relation, just a coincidence) as Superman. When I first saw this movie, I instantly changed my mind. Christopher Reeve IS Superman. The part couldn't be played better.

    Loved your reaction. What I love about this movie that you mentioned is Superman and use of his power. He only uses them when needed. He relies on his intelligence and wisdom to overcome obstacles not just powers. Showing Superman is more than powers. Also, shows that even Superman just wanted to be happy with Lois. Him giving up his powers to be family just shows you how much and how deep he loves. :) Finally, Christopher was the embodiment of Superman..he was good man on and off the set.

    Hi Lauren, I'm from Brazil and I really enjoy your videos, congratulations! I'm also a big fan of Christopher Reeve, so I wanted to suggest that you watch the movie "Somewhere in time" (1980), a drama that involves romance and time travel. An opportunity to see the depth and versatility of this extraordinary actor! Congratulations on the work and a hug!

    My favorite Superman movie. One of the two movies along with The Empire Strikes Back that I saw in the theaters as a kid. General Zod is my favorite. Film composer Ken Thorn's score and adaptation of themes composed by John Williams are awesome.

    “Every time superman smiles it makes me smile”
    I’d avoid the Snyder films then 😂😂😂
    Reeve to this day is still probably the greatest comic book lead actor ever

    Terry Stamp is a joy to watch, isn't he? I feel this is an early example of a Serious Actor having an enormous amount of fun camping it up as a supervillain.

    Saw this as a kid with early screening for newspaper delivery kids. I've never seen an audience react the way they did. Those kids were on their feet clapping and cheering non-stop.

    The drama behind the scenes of this film is almost better than the film itself.

    "Kneel before Zod!" Is one of those classic quotes that comic fans quote to each other all the time. 🤣

      He was excellent in the 1962 film, "Billy Budd" (based on the Herman Melville novella.) In fact, his character--Billy--was spotlessly virtuous (much like Superman!) the exact opposite of General Zod. In another reality, Stamp would have been a great 1960s Superman.

    I love Christopher Reece as Superman. And although this movie wasn’t so great…particularly the parts where they gave Superman and the villains powers they never have had before or have had since. However, it has some great scenes. When he rescues the boy and flies away, when he comes back and lands behind the hotdog stand, that is just the smoothest, most natural landing ever. It thrills me as much as the flying scenes do. He is so comfortable on the wires and goes from flying to walking just as natural as if Reeve actually could fly.

    The opening scene with the bomb on the Eiffel Tower was not part of the original script for Superman II. It was an additional scene added on when Richard Lester replaced director Richard Donner. Originally, Zod and the other Kryptonian villains were released from the Phantom Zone by the nuclear missile that Superman threw into space at the end of the first movie.
