Importing and Managing Samples on the Roland TR-6S | TR-6S Tutorial and Walkthrough

  • In one of my previous videos I went through some of the settings on the TR-6S that are useful to check on, and also talked about settings for sample playback in the drum sound design video. What I didn't understand is how the TR-6S actually manages it's samples, where they're saved, and how to organise them, so I thought I'd do it as a video.
    It also shows how and why the TR-6S maybe isn't the best option if you're looking for a drum machine that's better for samples. Why? Because the TR-6S doesn't make it easy, unfortunately.

    Nice video! The sample import is, as you say, pretty tedious. There is a batch sample delete method from the Utility menu.... SAMPLE>Delete > press the "Value knob" and the sample gets a mark next to it... page through clicking the samples to be deleted.... "shift" and click the value knob.to give the [Cancel] [OK] options to delete ... select using value knob and click as appropriate (Tr-6S Version 1.51).

    Thanks so much for all these videos! I bought my 6s yesterday and I´m learning absolutely everything following your playlist! This tiny machine absolutely rocks, even with the 6 tracks limitation and for me, because I never played an 8s, the menu diving is not a problem and actually I find it amazing.

    You are totally right, made bad experience of managing my sample packs with tr6s. Nearly impossible. So i will decide to buy me another device, f.e all this management is so easy with my octatrack, just copying to sd card period. so i will go for dedicated drumming maybe for digitakt II.

  • @MikeRenouf
    @MikeRenouf 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Thanks for sharing this. I have the TR8S and the sample management is the same - it sucks big time.
    I read in a couple of places that if you name folders correctly the device will import the samples into categories automatically, but never found evidence or a more detailed explanation. Have tried naming folders as USER1 for example and it didnt work - still dumped all the files into the IMPORT category on the drum machine. Such a shame.
    Roland have done firmware updates as recently as Jan 2021, so I am hopeful they may improve this, but it seems less likely as time goes on.

    370 MB?!? Holy shit,Eureka! For MPC 1000 users this is a godsend,Nearly 3 times what our machines will hold on their own. I’m not sure why anybody would’ve thought it could’ve streamed the whole 32gb in the first place, even an Octa track can only do 8 GB,if this could’ve it would’ve cost 4 times as much at least. As long as you’re not DJ Shadow,you’ll be fine.😏
    Another Good review/video by the way,Afro H. 👍🏼

    • @afrohamurai

      I think my main reason for assuming it could do more is based off of not using a hardware sampler at all, and not having it explained in the manual meant I could only use what I know to figure it out, right? So I was like “it must read it from the SD card” because of it.

    • @oscillationcommunications709
      @oscillationcommunications709 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@afrohamurai Oh,I absolutely understand. Hardware sample ram has always been a dance of enticement unfortunately,and I feel you more then you know. There is ABSOLUTELY no reason why we are not streaming 200gb of samples directly on a device the size of a credit card in this day and age,other then greed/industry regulations etc. I can’t fathom how realistic ram is not a years deep reality by now.. I get that it took a few years for Hardware to be considered viable still/again,and so there’s the market trends naturally,but if the designs of the past 15 years could have been able to stay up ram wise,would there have ever been a doubt as to the creative strength of Hardware samplers?🤷🏼‍♂️ I’m not sure,but it sure seems like they would’ve been more respected,and less of a technological boat anchor,to most,I’m sure of it.

    @4:20 I don't know about this specific machine, but in any other sampler, when you select OPTIMIZE, it will delete all the not-used-samples.

    • @marsancientruinsspotter9819
      @marsancientruinsspotter9819 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not with the TR-6S. Selecting "optimize" and running it (press the knob) only de-fragments the samples inside the machine. But it deletes nothing.

    Thank you for this. I was/am about to buy this, and i had been hesitating because i had a brief experience with some other Roland products, and i always hated their UI/UX. Absolutely ridiculous, how they 'design' their architecture. It's like it's all done by engineers, and engineers are the wrong people to create user-facing interfacing. // If i do go ahead, though, have you concluded what max size SD card i should get? Like, what's usable considering you indicated the limit is not the card but what is storable on the device-that's correct, right?

    Thanks for that , I’ve been wanting to use my samples from Mars drum sample packs with the TR6. But this looks really clunky importing them. Also I presumed the samples were being read straight from the SD card , so having only 360MB of ‘ sample memory’ instead of 32GB is a big deal . Mmm, Roland should have made this clear .

  • @saardean4481
    @saardean4481 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I bought it. I was positively surprised when you said it holds 375mb of memory but was then negatively surprised when I could not import even 60mb.

I then did some research after the fact. So it holds 600 seconds in mono or 300 seconds in stereo. 300 seconds is 5minutesX60sec=300 sec in 44,1khz/16bit.

A minute in stereo is around give or take 10+ Mb per minute. So it can take between 50-60 mb of samples. So if you import 2 samples of 150 sec length each, the machine is full.

If it was able to import 375 mb of samples I would literally Mary the device and glue my self to the pavement.
though with the prehistoric sample organizing workflow of the machine I would probably kill myself before I get older while organizing and moving the samples into categories etc
