    Just so everyone is aware, my impressions in this video DO NOT apply to the DT 880 600 ohm. This is strictly an evaluation of the 250 ohm version. For anyone wondering the sources I used for this, I primarily used the Topping L30, SPL Phonitor X, and the Cayin HA-1A Mk2 tube amp shown in the thumbnail.

      I get the feeling the 250 and 600 ohm vary more unit to unit than with differences in impedance according to oratory's comments on their driver qc

      @@metal571 I was speaking with some of the guys about how changes to the voicecoil would impact impedance, and where this may also impact other things that show up in measurements. It's something worth looking into that probably also accounts for the differences in tuning.

      Hey Andrew, awesome review as usual. Since you mentionned the HA-1A Mk2, can i ask if you're planning to review it in a short future ? I know it's been around for a while now but i don't think you said much about it. I'm heavily considering this amp atm so it'd be nice to hear your opinion on it. Actually i don't think anyone reviewed it on youtube now that i'm thinking about it. Thank you!
      Does it pair well with your 6XX ? How about the 560S ? Just a lil tease maybe ? 😄

    • @TheHEADPHONEShow
      @TheHEADPHONEShow  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@random-internet-dude It's decent. Moderately 'tubey', with a unique impedance boost that has some weird/cool synergies with certain headphones like the Focal stuff. For HD650 it widens the soundstage a bit, but not THAT significantly.
      The main downside in my opinion is that it's quite 'microphonic', and is very sensitive to vibrations. And I don't mean in the 'get this magical product to remove vibrations' kind of way, I mean like if you tap on the table it's on, you hear it through your headphones.
      And also, I wonder if it could have been even more 'tubey'. This is sort of a middle of the road kind of tube flavor, and in some ways I almost want more of that in a tube amp. But... that's also because I have high end SS amps here too.

    I have the DT880 and the HD600. The Sennheiser are way more uncomfortable, because of high clamping force. I prefer the sparkling highs of 880 regarding the veiled Sennheiser high mids low highs. As if you were listening music behind a door or through 5 layers of toilet paper in the Sennheiser. Some like this, some not.

    • @fei19317
      @fei19317 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Nicest comment. I bought DT880Premium 250ohm over the veiled 650. And much more expensive, thick mid HD600

    • @LyK0sa
      @LyK0sa 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Clamp force is easily fixed on the sennheisers, just fully extend them and bend the spring steel backwards to loosen them up. Don't try bend the headband, just the retractable steel parts.
      I didn't find stretching them over a block to make any significant, lasting difference to the clamp force, plus this also compresses the pads (I ended up using a book to wedge them open to try to avoid this). But a bit of careful bending will immediately solve the problem, it's really helped me appreciate my HD58X a lot more.

    • @tetrisgoat
      @tetrisgoat 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is funny that you say that. I find the DT880 to be far less comfortable than the HD650 because it doesn't have as much clamp force. I think the HD6-series could use *more* clamp. I realise I am likely the exception to the rule here, but it always amazes me how different we can be. Love the DT 880, the treble is so smooth. But it has too little clamp to be comfortable, so I still use the HD650 and prefer to be disappointed by its sound and be more comfortable.

    I agree with basically everything you said, and yet the DT880 is still my most used headphone. Sure, the Sennheiser are more detailed, but the 600 series, even the 660s, doesn't sound as neutral to me. The 560s are more neutral but the DT880 still win when it comes to soundstage. Also i HATE the oval earcups on Sennheiser headphones, i keep adjusting them every 2min because they never feel quite right. The Sundara beat the DT880 in every way when it comes to sound, but they aren't exactly built to be just thrown into a bag and tossed around. I was very interested in the Elex, but they don't ship to Germany. Maybe there is some magical solution to my headphone woes above 1000$, but in the three figures price range everything has some kind of deal breaker that has me coming back to the DT880.

      All sennheiser headphones except the he1 have dark veiled treble and lack bass. (It's all mids) These do not have better detail retrieval than the dt880's, or bass separation. Hifiman Sundara have dark treble aswell. Messurments don't lie!
      What you do want is a 5db bass boost and a slight 200hz mudcut. Not as much as the harmen target. And you want diffuse field level treble extension, aside from above 10k where you want a little roll off, aswell as a 2.5-3k dip for a wide soundstage.
      The dt880 600 ohms follows this target the best. They do have a 6k peak, but that is not a problem on a warmer side amp. And with a dac's bass button these don't even lack sub bass. With these you have perfect bass, mids and nearly perfect treble aside from the peak. Hifiman sundara are not better than the 880's! These have dark treble aswell just sennheiser headphones

    Dt 880 600 ohm or bust.
    I have endgame headphones in my collection, and at least 30 + different high end headphones.
    Yet the dt880 600ohm, is so special and astonishing, it sounds like a more intimate hd800s if that makes any sense, the details the speed the dynamics, especially when amplified properly.
    Its very close to the t1 gen2 and the hd800s.

      T1 gen 3 is utter garbage. I tested one just few days ago, and it sounded like crap even compared to my DT 880 Pro 250 ohm. Kinda have hard time to believe T1 gen 2 would be any better. Made me really realize not all 1000 dollar headphones are as good as you might think, some are in fact worse than 5x cheaper headphones.

      @@teemuvesala9575 the t1 3rd gen is a piece of trash.
      It's boomy, the bass bleeds into the mids, and it sounds muffled.
      Arguably the worst flagship headphone I auditioned.
      The t1 1st gen and 2nd gen sound a lot like an hd800.
      If I would describe the difference between them, the 1st gen sound like hd800, 2nd gen sounds like an hd800s, 3rd gen sound like beats by Dre on steroids.
      Research the difference between 3rd gen and 1st gen you will astonished, 2nd gen has slightly more bass than the 1st gen and by slightly I mean hd800 to 800s difference.

That being said the beyers and senns are not that behind with each other in therms of detail with the 880 being more natural and senns more in ur face type of details in the mids, but what is more of a difference, the dt 880 is more open and transparent without beaing too sharp. Hi and thanks for the very interesting and detailed review. I am puzzled everytime I want to check objective data, since several expert or audiophile websites show quite different frequency responses for the very same headphone variant. In theory of everyone follows the measurement standard, the results should end up comparable, taking out measurement tolerance and part-to-part variation. How can one evaluate the headphone performance if the sources are all different?

      Good question and what interests me: What genre of music do they listen to with these headphone? The DT880 is recommended by Beyerdynamic for classical and jazz music and then I have to hear that it doesn't sound good with rock music and metal. Really now?
      The DT 880 Edition delivers good detail, soundstage and imaging, which is an advantage with classical music. I sometimes have the suspicion that many listen to the wrong headphones for their music style.
      It also doesn't surprise me that after such a long time that the DT880 has been on the market, there are better ones out there. But at €150 the choice is slim in this category.

    Beyer doesn't seem to readily post/identify the drivers. Based on the specs I can find, it seems like Beyer outsources it's drivers and it uses the same driver or maybe a select few drivers for all of the headphones it sells today. Only the new 700 and 800 series use the updated Stellar driver, and again, both use the same driver, same 100mW power handling, only with increased sensitivity at 100 d/t ppl, including me, c/o the older ones not getting loud enough.

      I measured a VERY slight difference between the two, like 2dB at most between 4-6khz. Both were new units so it's not pad wear. It could be within unit variation tolerances, but the difference in build could also be responsible. So realistically we can think of them as being sonically equivalent.

    'The crazyness in the treble' - totally agree. Even the 600ohm that has less energy in lower highs sounds way too bright. Putting clinex paper tissue doesn't help. The HD600 is way more neutral, although image narrower than DT880s. I revisited diyAudioHeaven to take a look his measurements, so there's actually quite a difference between 250 and 600 ohm version. They might be OK editing as they show more upper freq 'details'. If the HD560 would have less of the 4-7kHz peak and a bit more energy at the very top, that would be nice.

However, if you had to stick with the DT880, the Ray Samuels Emmeline XP-7 with opamp upgraded to AD797 is a good pairing that I had used for two decades. Of my newer modern amplifiers, the Singxer SA-1 plays nice with the DT880. My preference is to use a Darkvoice 336SE tube amp with DT880. I use it a lot for the Z review sound demos (600ohm) I think it is good and transparent to pick up on those different tonalities. The only weird thing I hear is something I would call a gray background, it doesn't quite have the deep blacker backdrop in separation that the 990 (600ohm) has. But somehow this makes it stand out when listening to the sound demos because it will pick up on dynamics and try to reproduce them anyway. But for casual listening I think the 990 (600ohm) is better, even if it is more sounded. Dunno why but my 880 is actually brighter than my 990. The 880 doesnt have the resolution in the air treble like Sundara does, but it has like massively better soundstage and imaging IMO. I think those Beyers, together with the 770 250ohm are one of the best desktop, do it all headphones of all time, that don't destroy your wallet. For something different and more organic one could go for the biocell drivers /denon/fostex. Personally I dont like the 560S and I think the beyers are lightyears better, them sennheisers have all the 2-6khz you would would want, but above 8-15khz I think the sennheiser 600 series is a little lacking. Also; HD560S mid treble sounds agresively grainy, also not even close to 880 stating or imaging. Non-existent high treble also. Although on some measurements they extend well. But compared to beyer they are veiled. But to say the 880 is metallic in timre ? No No No - judge for yourself guys!
