  • The Beyerdynamic DT 880 600 Ohm headphones are power hungry but not a huge drain on the wallet, these affordable open-back studio headphones offer a taste of the Hi-Fi sound signature at a fraction of the cost.

I’d be skeptical about that conversion. I can’t remember if it’s converting xlr-3.5 or balanced period-3.5 but it’s supposedly dangerous and could either wreck the headphone or the amp. As it’s not truly balanced your just pulling more power from the xlr out which is what you want I suppose but at what cost? Could be a rare problem but something I haven’t looked to much into. Should have terminated it in 2.5 trrs

Ah yes, Balanced is a loaded term: th-cam.com/video/yZlFNR5DUGg/w-d-xo.htmlsi=EQCsdS7pz51wKgIJ&t=85 but a proper conversion is *balanced* in that you are running a dedicated ground per channel. Having access to more power is often a benefit but not the exclude reason to run balanced cables to your headphones. In fact, some amps offer the same power output from both their TRS and XLR outputs. While slightly bigger, the 3.5 is more common which will allow you to reuse your cable with other headphones (like many Hifiman for instance).

Watching this with Dt880/600. Giving that dt880 is neutral-bright analytical headphone, the sound is very smooth. I expected to experience some dry and a bit cold sound but that's not the case here. It's quite smooth, somewhat warm with bright treble. The mid is very good here also, not shouty or recess. The sound is very balanced to my ears.

Bass is present and articulate on these but they will not satisfy you if you like a lot of heavy, powerful bass. I have not tried the Sundara but the Hifiman headphones I have sampled all had more bass than the DT880. I like how planar headphones produce bass personally.

    • @SineCraftAudio
      @SineCraftAudio  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I haven't hear the DT770 but from what I've read they are going after a different sound, not better or worse, just different. Burn is was quick. They are a very tight headphone and sound pretty spot on right out of the box. The critical thing with the 600 ohm is to ensure you have enough drive or they will sounds dull and thin.

The Philips treble is much better-balanced and they have a more natural soundstage thanks to front-to-back angled drivers. They're also less fatiguing to wear for long listening sessions since they fit less tightly than the Beyerdynamic.

At 196 mW @ 300 Ohm from the SE output I'm not sure that it would drive it well. The Balanced out has significantly more power, guessing you'd have closer to 800 mW which should do them justice.

I use a cheap Amplifier soundblaster for 20 bucks and Boom 3D , I forget the cost of this app, but cheap, I can get theatrical sound with "spatial" on the app, and you feel like you're in the cinema with them, and I crank up the bass with "Bass boost", put it to the highest, but still not a lot of bass. I will buy a bass booster amp and see if it can. And for classical I select "Fidelity" to the max. I have the 250 ohm, it's pretty good for 200 Australian dollars, unless you're a bass head it's a good buy, because it can recreate those unique sounds from flagship headphones, and it's really confortable. The expensive headphones have mostly the same components that you find in amplifiers, except that they're small and in the headphones. But if you outsource this stuff in an outside amp / bass booster, you just need a pair that can execute the changes made by them, and this pair does (except for bass, yet to confirm it with a proper bass amp.)

How great is the sound difference between the 250 version compared to the 600? I am considering the 250 because I have the atom amp and I don't think that would power the 600. I currently have the he400i and the 1more over ears.

    • @SineCraftAudio

The 250 ohm version sounds really nice. It's detailed, it has some well articulated based, etc. I think if you had not heard the 600 version you would be happy. The 600 sounds more alive, more energetic. You feel like you are hearing the recording room more. It's a more differentiated sound signatures. I think both options are going to sounds thiner and more accurate than the HE400i.

Great review and I agree with everything you said on this review. I own some TOTL Headphones from Utopia, Empyrean, Susvara, Z1R, HD800 and the DT 880 Pro Premium 600 ohm. And I tried to run Single Ended through allot of AMPS and the only ones that made a sound difference and powered DT 880 600 ohm was the Felix Euforia to about 75%, my Yamaha AS-3000 Int Amp, and the BasX A-100 (UNLEASHED), and my new WA33 Elite. After seeing this video planning on sending it out to get balanced. People trust me this is a great headphone and it is NOT the same as the lower ohm models and stop with any amp can power 600 ohm because you are WRONG. Yes any AMP can power a headphone but it will NOT be to it's fullest capabilities. Oh yeah SUBSCRIBED

Yeah, I can't really explain it as I'm not an EE but if you listen to this headphone on more and less powerful amps there is definitely a difference in how it sounds. In my testing when driving it with beefier amps over balanced outputs it really comes alive. Having a watt on hand is definitely not a requirement but to my ear more power = more better.

    • @filipiino96793

@@SineCraftAudio moreso higher output voltage rather than pure wattage if you look at the sensitivity combined with the resistance. I also tested my pairs on slightly more expensive amps like the thx and asgard and the difference was there but wasn't really worth the price increase imo. @@SineCraftAudio great review, outlined the way these sound very well. You got yourself a sub. Also seems like you have excellent equipment to test them on.
These really are very engaging and dynamic, and sound fantastic with stringed instruments.
You are correct in saying that these benefit from beefier amps. The science behind it, if you’re interested, is that the individual coils in the driver are thinner and more densely packed, as a result lighter and quicker to push air. The catch is that it requires a large amount of voltage swing to move these coils efficiently. Solid state amplifiers usually prioritize current gain rather than large voltage gain and thats why a lot of folks plugging them into low power solid states may find them thin, but personally I’ve found high-output impedance 2-ch stereo amps or Tube amps with big voltage swing work wonders with these headphones.
Low impedance headphones (75ohm or lower) require more current gain than voltage gain, if things werent already complicated, the best way to gauge how hard it is to push a headphone is to look at its impedance in addition to the sensitivity in (dB/V) decibels per input volt or (dB/mA) per input ampere.
So theoretically, having a higher impedance driver is actually preferable for amplifiers and is “easier” to drive than a lower impedance, because the amp has better control over the drivers and the thinner, denser coil with a lower mass can push air more quickly. Hope this has not bored you to death. If so I would not blame you.
