An entertaining tutorial - thanks. I'm colorizing a b&w photo I took maybe 42 years ago - I had b&w film in the camera and the colors were the whole point of the spontaneous photo. I've never known a way to create the colors with fine adjustment. Kind of important as I'll use the photo on a book cover.

As someone with a lot of old family photos, this filter is interesting. I'm finding that it takes a VERY long time to implement changes from the cloud. (like 5 minutes) after I make an adjustment. All the other Neural/Beta selections work in a snap.
Very good tutorial!!! Thank you so much! Note that the latest version 22.5 has a bug with the Colorized filter. I had to downgraded PS several times to find a version (22.2) works.

Excellent tutorial that I was pointed to by a kind person on DPReview forums. Can I just ask if this works on the latest version of Photoshop Elements. I realise the full version is much more powerful but as a retired amateur the cost savings of Elements over the long term would be useful. Thanks and keep up the good work.

Its a good starting point. But objects have a lot of different hues in it, so I like using Gradient Maps especialy to make skin tones more realistics.

None of this works on my photoshop cc 2021, the only thing that is active on my screen is the blue loading circle in the top right, this is a navidia 16gb custom built pc, am I missing something?

This is by far the best explanation of this new filter. At the beginning just mentioning you must start with an RGB mode was something I had missed. Now why does the processing take up to 5 minutes or more?
Since I posted the above Adobe has really improved the colorize filter. It takes only a fraction of the time it originally took. Plus you can create additional layers that allow you to change colors and apply noise reduction, saturation, exposure etc.

thanks a lot for your tutorials, I have learned almost everything in PS from you in the last years.
I have a question: I'm doing the same procedure as you do (also RGB in the Image Mode) but colorizing takes over 45 Minutes sometimes even one hour!!! (my CPU is cor i5 3rd Gen.) do you know the reason? could you please help me with this?
Emad, it might be your processor and video card (or lack of video card). You can see the Ps 2021 minimum requirements here: helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/system-requirements.html
Which version of Photoshop is this? I just upgraded from PS Elements 10 to PS 2021 and not only does it look different it lacks features this version has.

What did you do to fix skin color? The arm that was sticking out definitely had a blue cast before you finished.
Marian, same as the skirt. I used a Solid Fill Layer with a color that is similar to skin.
@@PhotoshopTrainingChannel Another option would be to take the RGB values off another photograph of people and use those. Thank you for this tutorial - it has answered all the questions I had about this new filter and how to use it to best effect.
Thanks for the video. I prefer Pixbim Color Surprise AI to colorize black and white photos in a very short span of time as it also includes an advanced brush tool to improve the AI colored photo. I did try the new filter in Photoshop 2021 but I am slowly drifting away from Photoshop.

Would love to learn more. Got some B&W pictures (hard copy) and looking to scan them to see how goes. any tips on how to scan them? (color? gray scale?...DPI...)
Scan as RGB color, then you don't have to convert the file to RGB to apply the filter.
Good suggestion Alan! And I wouldn't scan anything lower than 300 DPI. If the photos are small I would probably do 600 DPI

I downloaded the colorize filter in Photoshop several weeks ago and it worked great on several b&w pictures. Yesterday I attempted to colorize another b&w picture and I got the message to download the filter. When I attempted to download the filter, it would not download. I restarted PS but still got the same message. I restarted the computer but continued to get the same message. Any suggestions? Thanks

I found out by trial and error that the image had to be changed to the RGB Mode to get the filter to work. One would have thought that that should be a part of the pop-up description included from Adobe.

Reminds me of Ted Turner's early efforts of colorizing B&W movies. There's much more improvement needed. The hazy color bleeding over edges is a problem. I'm assuming that this "beta" filter is still being developed, but apparently deemed ready enough to be included with the latest version of PS.
Yeah. Hopefully when it's "fully" released those issues are improved.
There are different methods for using AI to colorize images, automatic and considerably different from the Ted Turner approach.. The machine learning used to accomplish this uses thousands of sample images to teach what colors should be used in different situations. As more images are included, the AI learns and gets better. In addition, there are newer methods being used to decide what areas should be colored in what way. This was a good video, but I got the new photoshop but this neural filter is graded out how is that??
Make sure that you are using an 8-bit RGB image. You probably have a image in the grayscale mode.
