The filter on Brennan's voice for the Junkmother is my favorite piece of editing in D20. It has such an airy and melancholic feel that makes her seem so sympathetic.
I feel like this could’ve so easily just been another “the party finds a big monster in a cave and slays it” if Emily hadn’t decided to treat the junk mother with kindness
This perfectly showcases Emily's playstyle of treating 'weird' npcs with a degree of love where they turn into far more than they were intended to be. If Zac had been alone here, we never would've seen this depth of the Junkmother. With Emily there? She becomes a whole entity.
"Not designed for a purpose, instead, purposed for a design" Is such a gem of a deeply philosophical idea. It shows that the junk mother has really thought hard about their relationship with the universe and how that relates to biological life. Love me some Mulliganian existentialist takes.
genuinely having to restrain myself from writing a small essay on how much i love this character both in concept and the way brennan plays her she tickles my brain so much in so many different ways
im still fully convinced Brennan had planned to have Aurora and Junkmother set up as minibosses for each encounter for the team to fight, but then Emily just pulled up with full on sweetness that they naturally became friends, thats the Sundry Sidney charm at work
100%, and I love how it's such a great example of one of the most amazing things about TTRPGs: the ability to create your own character arc out of thin air just by making a couple of decisions that are unexpected but honest and earnest and feel true to you. I feel like treating Aurora and the Junkmother with kindness where others would just see menace or inconvenience is a pretty perfect analogue for Sundry Sidney being a Keeper of Souls and wanting to save other defunct or near-defunct lines of androids. And also, the way that she literally becomes more powerful or gains new abilities from her unexpected kindness to each (getting Aurora as a pet/mount, and being able to see other Keepers) is a perfect parallel for Sundry Sidney rejecting conventional wisdom and societal pressure in favor of "becoming" and choosing to be her own person instead of what she was "supposed" to be, and becoming better as a result. Man I love the Junkmother and Sid
The Keeper of Souls thing is so beautiful and so meaningful in this goofy busted romp of a season. It’s got the same energy as hanging out with other people with chronic illness and just being able to be totally honest about how busted your body is. I strive to be a Junkmother.
I just love how Sidney and Skip both agree that the Junkmother is so fuckin rad and cool and that they should at least try to befriend her cuz she’s just so fuckin cool lookin. Absolute “friends just found a weird cat and wanna bring it home” energy
I like to imagine that post-campaign, Sidney just goes about the galaxy looking for discarded parts to bring about a new civilization of “obsolete” androids and robots with the Junkmother
This whole sequence makes me feel like I’m watching my favorite part of some animated kids movie I imprinted on when I was like 3 years old. Like, one where most of it faded from my memory but one scene made a lasting, deep impression at a formative age and got permanently engraved in my head. It just has that vibe. It’s really comforting. Im sure part of that is my extremely vague memories of the brave little toaster kind of weaving themselves into it, only this is a much less traumatizing version of the junkyard scene. I am obsessed with this trash bag bird like doll lady
I absolutely love how Brennan plays the Junkmother, his android voice and mannerisms are perfect and usint his philosophy background to turn what could've easily been just a throwaway (no pun intended) character into one of the most poignant characters in all of Dimension 20
the trope of intelligent or empathic androids/humanizted tech, things being lost to time, and showing kindness to abandoned or demonized creatures always hit especially hard
I’m absolutely in love with the Junkmother. She’s simultaneously a terrifying monster straight out of a horror game and an endearing, sympathetic collector who cares for all of the things that have been thrown away.
I saw the short on D20’s channel where they talk about Emily’s robot and how she was the perfect person to meet the Junkmother, but I never really understood why. This video not only helped me understand the context but also gave me a similar appreciation for the Junkmother like Emily has. Thank you for this! I love it.
Not sure if morph was hiding his face because he was scared of the doll or because he knew Emily just saw a stray cat of a creature and knew she was gonna try and keep it as a pet😂
The shock and delight the Junkmother shows at being close to getting a Servo Sam midcap resonates deeply with me as a collector of rare items. It's the same reaction l had to finally buying Bolshack Dragon and a bunch of lesser cards for a fourth of BD's price all in all.
I love the junkmother so much, and she’s so interesting, because she almost reminds me of a super wise child. And the introspection she caused in skip was really interesting too! (But also I felt a bit bad for murph at his reaction to her description 😭)
When you plan your alsvariesy creature to fight the party, and one of your players devides to cjoose compassion. Suddenly youre coming up with a wjole backstory and personality ON THE SPOT.

also the little chime that happens every time he does the thing with his fingers just that alone adds so much to her

Yes yes yes
I feel like this could’ve so easily just been another “the party finds a big monster in a cave and slays it” if Emily hadn’t decided to treat the junk mother with kindness
Make a character interesting to Axford and just let go seems to be a safe bet as a DM at this point

"Good bye, Sundree Sydny, your kindness was extremely bizarre!"
I love how Brennan deliberately avoids calling the Junkmother beautiful and five minutes later, Emily calls her beautiful to her face 🥹

Emily is SUCH an actress at heart, the way her eyes totally light up when talking to the Junkmother is sheer magic.
I’m absolutely in love with the Junkmother. She’s simultaneously a terrifying monster straight out of a horror game and an endearing, sympathetic collector who cares for all of the things that have been thrown away.
The fact that such an unhinged comedy of a season can also be so beautiful and touching is a testament to how good dimension 20 is
i fell in love with the junkmother as soon as i heard her voice

Brennan's description of this whole scene gave me Nier Automata vibes of the Amusement Park Boss. Very chilling and enthralling his way of words
