Watching the scene of Gunney talking about playing at their own casino makes me realise that the casino is probably the best possible solution they could've had to his gambling addiction - like this, no matter how much he loses, he won't ever actually lose it, it'll just be in the custody of the ship, which is probably for the best considering how talented he is at being deep in debt and still being more impulsive with money than most other people.
That only works if he plays something like Blackjack, where one player's win/lose outcome doesn't really affect another player. Now if he plays craps or poker...
