Great video having a similar setup in my bathroom. You have answered all my questions with regard to working on my faucets. I’m sure there are many people who would like to see small projects as we all will encounter. Thank again
Thanks for this. I'm currently replacing glav. piping in in 1914 home. I live in a historic district, and there are always people who need 'small' jobs like this done. Many of the plumbers in the area want to avoid touching these repairs and/or charge more than the homeowner can afford. The other issue is that there are a lot of nasty plumbers who will take the job but not take the time, effort, or TLC that these old houses require. I mostly do electrical, but I have worked on plumbing on many old places in the city. Often when I'm working on elec. for someone, they'll ask me to look at plumbinng issues, so watching these repair jobs is incredibly helpful.
Thank you!! This was precisely the video I needed to address leaky shower fixtures in my 1936 house. I’ve been trying to find a handyman to do this with cleaning up some of the flaking deglazed tile (mine is pink as well) but now I’m super confident in replacing them. Thank you!
Very helpful! Thank you for showing the replacement stems box with part number. My husband and I own an old house and want to preserve its original charm. Most people we've consulted with recommend gutting and starting from scratch, but that would be far too expensive. Videos like yours help us to keep our little old house in tip top shape. Looking forward to more!
..... my moms house was built in 1944. I could not find the specialty stems so I just replaced all the old graphite packing and washers and everything works great thank you.
I have to say as a "Handyman" you did better than most real plumbers. If I can offer a little advice and this is just the way I was taught. On an old faucet like that, which isn't "washerless" but still uses uses actual rubber washers. When you're turning (tightening or loosening) the packing nut or the main retaining nut, you want to always make sure to turn the handle in and out as you do it. This is to make sure that you don't tighten up to hard against the wrong washer at the wrong time and risk tearing it and making a new problem on a part you might not be able to replace. So if you can (been there too lol) take off the chrome cover put the handle back on and turn that as you use your pliers. Also one more thing to think about is you want to take a part your new seat and stem (your new parts) as easy as you can by hand and lube pretty much every brass and rubber piece you can get to faucet too screw it back together by hand and do exactly as shown here making sure to turn the handle as you do it. Thank you and keep up the good work. Especially about not being there to argue with the customer but being there to do a job and not leaving until he was happy and you fixed his actual problem 👍
Best shower valve video! Thanks for all the extra tips about packing nuts and pressure differences between shower and tub...and the tip about the packing leaking due to clogged shower head. You clearly know your stuff. Thank you for sharing!
I have rebuilt a few of these old type faucets, yet you still managed to explain a few things that I did not know. Thanks for passing that knowledge on.
Great vid. You(if not directly) inadvertently answered every question I went into this video hoping to enlighten. Thanks for not over thinking it, or being overly performative
Thank you for posting and sharing this video, I live in an old home over 100 yrs old. Learned alot on this type of installation, which is also a pink bathroom, lol!! 👍 👍 👍 keep posting the small jobs.
I bought an older home about a year ago and love watching your videos. It has saved me money for projects a didn't think I could do.Thank you. Keep'em coming.
As a self proclaimed "handy man", I enjoy seeing any project you are working on. Whether it's you building a fence or installing porch lights in the snow. I like the fact I can see someone else working on the same type things I do, but I get to see you work through them and troubleshoot issues you have a long the way. Which helps me see things from a different perspective. From a production standpoint, the only thing I could recommend is figuring out a way for better audio. This can be really simple by adding a very small, inexpensive mic to your gopro. There are mics made specifically for gopros. Other than that, I just say keep doing what you're doing, and like others have said - don't worry about what others want. Do what you want.
Love this video!!! I actually have a handyman side job with this exact shower valve to do cause handles wont turn and customer wants full replacement. Great info and i love the videos of handy jobs you do. Thank you.
I work on the side at 6 homes and really like your channel. Both videos are good to see but the smaller jobs mixed are really helpful to see another way to do things.
I have worked on that exact American Standard faucet set. They were made out of old high quality brass and always came out easily. I don't quite get it but those barrels make the rubber washers last much longer.Only 2 out of 24 ever needed work over 9 years. They are a high quality faucet the likes of which is no longer made. As to the new replacements put in, I was always needing to work on them.
I think all of the projects you can film and post are good info. You have some great experience and for all I know I will run into a bind with something you’ve covered.
Put up both kinds of jobs... No job too small - as they say. I'm a new subscriber, and a handyman like yourself. Great work there - and thanks for sharing. I had to replace the exact same ones just the other day!
All your vids are great man. Film whatever YOU like then you never have to worry about who youre pleasing. Just as if you owned a bbq joint. Make it the way you like and you will find enough customers that like it that way too so its a win win for everybody. Wish we lived close by i would love to shadow you for a while to get some of that knowledge you have but ill just settle with the vids lol. ps LOVE how you fast-forward through the monotony of screwing and unscrewing things lol. Keep em comin!
As a new home owner I am trying to learn as much home repair as possible. . I would say most can handle the small projects with some level of confidence. my vote would be for DIY projects. . (not sure my skill level could handle the big projects. .but I enjoy learning and watching the big ones..)
I am always looking for new things to learn in this trade. My opinion, post all jobs. Also, projects around the shop are nice to watch. Keep em coming partner...
I have the same valves in a 1950s shower/tub with only hot/cold. Open cold valve and no water, but open hot and have water at tub or shower. Tried replacing washers with no luck.. Thanks for identifying brand and model.
Thank you for going into so much detail! Sometimes you just show a box of compound or how thick drywall is and I am not sure what I am supposed to gleam from that information.
Love the vids man. I do maintenanace for a hotel. And watching all the variety of jobs u do is inspiring. Especially to someone like myself starting out in the business. Keep it up man. Awesome
I cannot express just how much I appreciate this video. My bathroom is also from the 1950's (1953), and this is the shower handle style I have (thankfully my grandmother had taste and opted for the grey tile instead of pink). We thought for sure we had to go inside the wall to replace the gasket. You just saved me a load of money, my water bill has been insane. Can you please tell me how to go about finding a specialty shop to get handle replacements. The chrome finish on mine are a mess from the constant hot water flow from the leak. Thank you!
I'm pretty good with most trades but plumbing and electrical are by far, my weakest skills! I own a house built in 1960 and had absolutely no clue what was happening to my shower temp and pressure. I did eventually discern that the galvanized pipes were flaking off in my shower head filter but I still have a standing issue with temp control! Looks like I'll be exploring the replacement of the faucets and hopefully, a pex manifold for the entire house! Thanks and wish me luck!!
Where did you get that replacement kit? I went to home depot and the stem and packing unit was different and did not go into the whole. Mine is exactly like the one here is this video.
try a store that specializes in plumbing supplies they should have or be able to order something that will work. big box stores like HD Lowes are just gonna have the most common stuff.
Ya-hooo now to find the plumbing store and hopefully can get the stem I need to replace the broken hot water stem. Gonna be wonderful to take a shower. New subscriber love all the info but I had to laff with not at the guy with hammer...know the frustration well. 😂 Wish there was good handymen in Northwest Fl. In this excellent video (thank you!) the fixtures you’ve removed look like what I have, and the age 80 yrs is about the same, so 🤞you can help me. I’m looking for a particular Speakman x handle to match another. Its for a 1936 bathtub faucet - everything works fine but the H handle is missing. Mr. Handyman, I am a genuine woman ... and I thank you for showing me how to fix the 3-way shower faucet in my old 1950s Ozarks farmhouse. Bless you.
THIS IS THE EXACT TUB FAUCET IVE BEEN STRUGGLING WITH FOR A YEAR. THANK YOU SO MUCH HOPEFULLY I CAN REPLACE THE LEAK NOW

Thank you Mr, handyman for posting this content. It is a plethora of information that was helpful. I learned alot from this video.
Definitely thanks for the handyman tutorial….bonus how to deal with the diy-you customer!! It was a great lesson ❣️👍
We prefer your great handyman videos as we have a 25 year old house and a 45 year old log cabin in Montana to maintain. Thanks so much!!!
Thanks for the feedback. I have some older houses that I'm going to be doing a lot of projects on over the next few months.

Good content. I like seeing the old stuff worked on because that is what I've got.
Helps me out a lot. Keep the repair jobs coming for us. Saves us $$ and headaches.

Same faucets in my house. This house was built in the late 40's. Great vid, thanks!
This is the problem I have. Mines been leaking for a while now. I hired a plumber who told me he had no idea....thank you so much for this video.
I like the handyman projects better myself. But a mixture of both handyman and remodel jobs are a good balance. Keep it up and God bless.
I like both small jobs and remodels. Love your channel. I watch 5-6 videos a night. Keep 'em coming. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you so much for this video. Now I know how to fix my old faucet. I love handyman projects
I like seeing all the jobs. To me it doesn't matter the size of the job. I find both the smaller and larger jobs very interesting! Great Video!
I appreciate the handyman videos like this one. Thanks!
Thanks! I just replaced the handle assemblies for my 80 year-old AS tub valve. This was a great guide for how to deal with install.
We like everything you do, my wife and I reach your work, great work ethic, thanks for sharing.Blessings! !!!!
Enjoying all the videos, including the small jobs. I learn a little on every one. Keep it up, and thanks for your work.

The connection between the increase in pressure due to the clogged showerhead and the packing nut leak is a valuable takeaway from this video.

Any suggestions would be welcome before I resort to settling for newer handles, change out the stem units etc.

Use crescent wrenches, check the seats and get the entire stem assembly and ecstusion. Also open each valve before unscrewing.

Don Ahrens , greetings DON, did you ever figure out where to buy those stems? Thank you in advance.

I am having a hot water leak with a similar shower. Do you think it'll be okay to replace the stem or would it not seat correctly after putting the new stem in since the valve is so old?
If you're going to attempt a similar job learn what a handle puller is as well as stem wrenches. He didn't need them on this job however you likely will.
Do they make black handles for these? Like maybe with an adapter?
Same faucets except my problem is a leaking shower head - would changing that o-ring be the first step?

Do you have a video on how to repack these type of faucets? Mine are 95 years old speakman leaking from stems.
whats the name of the supply house where you got rhise parts?
Do u do hvac as well?
If the packing nut is requiring a scary amount of torque, take it off, wrap a bit of Teflon or graphite packing around the stem and try again.
