Turned 28 and am currently in school for plumbing. Found your channel and just wanted to say thank you. For someone who made a lot of dumb mistakes and just now started fixing life you really helped me settle on plumbing and I am learning a ton just from watching you! You are the only channel that i enabled notifications on.
Albuquerque new mexico sir. I may ask you a lot of questions over time, but i have two really pressing ones. Where is a good place to look for good priced plumbing tools and what are good brands to keep an eye out for? Kind of on a tight budget at the moment, but do not want to get super cheap quick to break tools. Next semester I start the hands on stuff and they have a very large list of tools so any suggestions would be amazing.
awesome...internet for sure. you can shop the easiest. Maybe yard sales or maybe your local plumber has stuff he dont even use. I have a hand tools in my shop just waiting to find a new home or truck. Check out my one vid about apprentice tools. Hit me up anytime Benjamin
Remember, keeping the customer happy does NOT always mean they are right. Treat their home like your own, respectful tone and attitude goes a long way.. Listen, explain, sometimes, they just want to be heard but remember you are the professional but you are human too so a stupid suggestion may not be as stupid has you first think. Under NO CIRCUMSTANCES are you a target for their angry, if they start yelling or cussing, give them warnings, CALL YOUR BOSS and if they do not stop, leave. If you BOSS says stay. Stay, unless it is physically unsafe, then find a new Boss.
After dropping a nice little amount on various wrenches and pullers to remove parts of our tubs plumbing "the right way," I come across this video and my jaw dropped (in amazement) at how you got the job done with a couple of channel locks. I bow to your expertise at manhandling old pipes and your finesse in bringing everything back together so neatly.
That was an amazing job. Nearly the whole thing was knowing how to work around obstacles. I can see how an experienced plumber is important for all those "now what?" moments.
Watch all your videos... I’ve been plumbing from 30 years and business owner... but the best part is you teaching your sons that’s what is most important 😍
I just acquired a bunch of rental properties and all six units are sitting with these old ass mixers and they all leak behind the wall and some have damaged the walls and floors. This video was very informative regarding a logical and straight forward repair for replacing this crap. Thank you Sir!
I just bought a house built in 1924 and the upstairs bathroom is leaking just like this one and I have to replace the whole valve so this is helping me a great deal thank you. I subscribed also 😃
Wow. Okay, I was concerned about our current vintage shower fixtures and how we were possibly going to replace them if they were screwed up since we've been having some issues. This video gave me SO much more confidence. I am now understanding how all these things work. Thanks a lot!
Great use of putty! I watched a few others and was surprised that nobody used any sealer between the flange and the tile. I was going to caulk everything, which is how it was done previously, but not the best look. Thanks for the tip!
This is the same 3-valve and spout model that I need to replace. We recently got isolation valves installed for the tub so that I could try to tackle this without having to shut off at the main again. Super weird that we have a huge access panel to the tub but absolutely nothing that justified the access beforehand! I really appreciate the realness of your documentary and commentary through this process...loved the prematurely incorrect discovery of missing parts LOL! I hope I can do this. If not, I'll reach out to our plumber again who did the isolation valves for us. Wish me luck!
Appreciate your informative and detailed video! I'm no plumber and work on auto stuff all day long, I found this job challenging and your video helped me out. Thanks!
What you said towards the end of the video is very true, always check boxes to insure that you have all the parts in the box before you leave the store otherwise you'll have a hassle with the store clerk trying to say that you probably lost parts after you left the store.I make it a habit to always open the box of what ever it is that I'm buying before I check out at the cash register to make sure that I got all the parts whether the box has been retaped or not.
I have a '50s house and this job is exactly what I need to do. Love the part about putting the extra 'stops' in the pipe lines 'cause mine has no shut off valves. Now I can turn off the water - fit the 'stops'...and Momma can have her water back on while I do the job - it'll take me longer than you! Thanks - I've subscribed.
I'm not a big fan of music playing "in the background" on DIY videos, but yours was a good pick and at a good volume! You've given me courage to tackle this job. Thanks, thanks a lot! ; o)
Dude your awesome listening to the sound you make while your working reminds me of my grandfather he use to make the same noises 😂🤣😂🤣 thanks for the video
@@ChuckBarron You can say that again my Brother, sometimes you wish you were a contortionist,I'm serious.I once had to unclog a soil stack that was right behind an old oil tank and had I been twenty pounds heavier at the time it would have been like trying to squeeze two pounds of baloney into a one pound bag.
I love the way you make it look easy ! Confidence , Im glad you took the time to make it right ! Thank you for your knowledge , and the giving the know how for me and many others how to do this . This is a gift you have given to all of us .
Great job 👏👍 I have the exact same bathroom and vintage faucet my tiles are pink I also have the same problem with leaking. Whenever I turn on the shower not the spout. And it's leaking through the bottom of tub which is the living room ceiling 😭 which caused me to come across your video. All the dumb asses that I called to fix it saying they have to tear the whole thing down tub, Ceiling and all. Thing is I don't have all that amount of money right now. All I can afford right about now is a fix just like what you did so that my daughter and I can take showers smh, wish you could come do mine, I live in Philadelphia. You brought tears to my eyes. Thank you for your video 🙏.
awesome! Stay vintage. you can always gut a bath. I do know MVP plumbing in philly. He a great guy and honest too. Im not sure where part your in. He may be able to help.
Great job Chuck! I done so many of these, just like watching and anticipating your next moves, although I have never used the Propress, always did it the old timers way with the ol torch and solder. Learned everything from my Grandfather, no youtube back when I started!
Chuck, awesome video! Good camera angles nice music and volumen. I know how working on old pumblimg can be a nightmare. You tackled this job anticipating any potential problems like true pros do. Subscribed!
CB1, thanks for sharing your expertise with the world. Good call on the ball valves, its always a pain in the ass when you have to shut down a place with that many units. Especially when its old and there aren't seperate mains for each apartment. Been there done that. I always use clear silicone to. seal that up but tomorrow I am installing one of those and im gonna go the putty route. Youre the man CB.
So this looks exactly like our 60 year old bathroom with identical fixtures. It still mostly works, but I'm looking at making some changes because I've been getting black debris in the hot water from it. Cold seems fine and other hot taps in the house are fine. I've replaced everything from the tankless with expansion PEX A up to the 1/2" copper pipe that goes up through the floor feeding it from my basement and I'm still getting the debris. So now I'm guessing it's coming from the valve or some of the old galvanized fittings or the nipple. After watching this I may just change out the whole 8" valve like you did through an old access panel in our son's closet. I was going to see if maybe I could just replace the nipple with a brass one, but I'm having trouble getting the spout off right now. I was hoping to reuse it since it's original, but I may need to take my big wrench to it like you did. Thanks for the video of just exactly what I needed to see. Enormous help. If we ever meet, the drinks are on me. However, I'm wondering why you say the entire bathroom needs to be "gutted". Ours is green tile but otherwise looks the same down to the tub.
that looks identical to the style in our front bathroom(possibly the tub too).....would love to have new handles & spout - only the toilet has a name in our bathroom - universal rundle (perhaps from sears and roebuck back in the day - love the full skirted toilet much better than the new kohler ones).....awesome work -
This was a bad ass job dude that place is ancient. You got hit with everything the old valves that can't be repaired anymore that metal backing on concrete, I'm surprised you had an access panel. I was searching for a video on how to replace the vintage American Standard Colony valve for a two handle shower with no bathtub spout because it has a wavy washer that fell off and I don't know where I should put it. The replacements come sometimes with it floating in the box, or sometimes under the basket that holds the washer metal against metal, and I've seem some place it on the rubber so who knows... The other thing is my little basket that holds the washer is removable on this ancient version which they don't make anymore and I can't find the little basket so I may have to do a Danco 9c-23h/C if it fits... ahhh sigh....
Thank you for posting this video. This is the same 3 value shower I need to replace and it helps to have seen one replaced by an expert! There is no access panel behind my wall and the bathroom was added to this house in the 1950's so my guess mine is original and has never been replaced. Thanks again! Great video!
The faucet and spout are identical to what I have. Its a Eljer brand. All the faucets and toilets were Eljer brand when I bough my house and it was build in 1955. I replaced a few stems, but no one seems to carry the parts locally. I buy them all online.
I didn’t know you could still get 2 handle shower faucets. Then again I haven’t done much residential service work since about 2006. I did see something on this old house where they had a kit that came with an escutcheon big enough to cover where the two handles would be so you can convert it to a mixing valve. Though one thing I miss about those old 2 or 3 handle valves is the union on the bottom. It always made it much easier to remove rather than plumbing it direct plus they were much easier to secure than single handles
2 handle on everything is the way to go... you get hot when you want hot and cold when you want cold, AND the pressures on the equipment, when you use them, are spread instead of concentrated on one point, I have an unsubstantiated belief that they last longer as a result...
Mark Leuschen I’d say this is another example of the nanny state in full swing. They can make anti-scald showers and if someone wants to buy them fine. If you want to mandate they be in multi-family dwellings, I’m not against that. But if I want full hot water in my own home, damnit let me take that risk myself.
2nd floor, wee fun, then again, I've done 90% of whole bathroom remodels by myself, including custom built cabinets. very not fun and takes way too long. i had helper to carry the largest items, finish drywall, paint and lay the tile, I absolutely hate that work. I did the drywall hanging, tile cutting and paint "primer" though. many times it pays to sub out the work!
Normally I don't watch this kind of stuff, but his jobs are adventures. There is always something unexpected and frustrating that he has to tackle. And IMHO, the plumbing industry should have developed more advanced connectors and tools by now. I would be curious to get his opinion on using PEX in general. It seems to me that it would be a good choice especially when working on older plumbing systems and homes. And of course, what about using PVC. Could this have been a solution in this case ?
Just like you used the adjustable pliers to secure the shower arm - use both adjustable plier handles just like a crescent wrench and grip the shower head nut and tighten. No more scars on that nut!
i love the video. i have an old time bath/shower faucet. if i go to Lowe's, or Home Depot, i would not be able to find a replacement. The ones at those stores are too narrow for my pipes. A plumber would need to redo the whole pipe system in the wall where the faucet is. I wanna find a new, or somewhat new, faucet to put in there. I would appreciate a reply with a supply house where i can find one.
Nice work Chuck, most of the videos I've seen only show replacing valve stems ; you actually replaced an existing - Wow ! How much does a job like this cost (labor price) ; i can't find a plumber in my area that will attempt to do the job you did. Thank you !
I love your cheery attitude!! Nicey nice!! My dad taught me everything I know, but you use equipment I'm not familiar with. A machine to connect the pipes which avoids sweating them on?
When you said you went surfing before work.... subbed. Plumbing is one of those things that... even though I understand how it works... it would probably take me a good part of a day to do what you just did... along with several trips to the hardware store.
Thanks for the video. I have old valve and it needs to be replaced but can’t find it at homedepot (those in HD are too long or just not fitting my old house). Anywhere I can still find and buy those old style size valve?
You did a very nice complete play by play professional job other than protecting all the surfaces from scratches with cardboard or fabric, not that the bathroom was mint lol. What did you charge the client or landlord for you labor. 👍🏼
Kind Sir, IF your customer wanted a costly; and buying things that has NOT one thing to do with leaks in the case. IE: 1. NOT one silver item, needed to be changed. 2. The manifold caused NO leaks and did NOT need to be changed. 3. Adding a double cut-off items, was NOT needed. 4. Fix the packing in the back side as you did. was needed. 5. But the major problem that was wrong; was: 3 "stems" and 3 seats. And that's all. (about $50 bucks and less than an hour) Of course...IF the customer does not care about outrageous costs; and wants every thing new, sure. But they should know before; that all was needed was 3 stems and 3 seats. The rest was 70% of the costs; and it was s NOT needed. But MOST plumbers would NEVER tell the customer that. Sad indeed. So the customer will never know; that they are paying 7 times than needed. Just to stop leaks. Oh indeed. I'm a plumber, and I KNOW that. And would NEVER do that to any customer; UNLESS they want it AFTER telling me the truth. May Jesus have mercy...
I gotta wonder how long it took for the connector to the shower arm to leak since he never ProPressed it... Love the pipe cutter and ProPress, being able to replace the leaky valve without replacing the valve was pretty cool, but next time they shut down the building, gotta get rid of the old valves!!!
@@ChuckBarron So the ProPress clamps for no movement in the pipes... I've worked with Pex and Sharkbite for wet joining and they maintain movement, which is scary, but "evidently effective" (there is evidence but not 50 years worth)... As far as "needing a ton", many many places do, but what do you do? Your video was a great example of handling the tough situation of "Just make It Work"
After the cutting the pipes and seating the connectors in the pipe what type of tool is that you used ? It almost looks like you crimped the connectors to the pipe without soldering them , they have those types of tools?
I don't get it though why not replace the individual cartridges and seats; what tipped you off to do the extra work such as cut out the copper pipe and replace the assembly that holds the cartidges?
Chuck, I’m a DIY homeowner who you inspired to buy an RP241 prrrrro pressssss. Redid my entire basement pipe network with concerning OCD precision. Also ended up getting the mega & PEX jaws. Tools are my crack. You’d be proud. I have basically this same (possibly older American Standard? 1950’s install) three handle tub/shower diverter at my Jersey shore home. What brand/model did you use here for the replacement valve bodies/diverter? I’d like to do this exact repair on my shower. 12:10 Thanks in advance.
If I'm installing a 3 handle valve like in this video but using pex, how should the valve be secured? I'm seeing pipe straps online which I could screw into a horizontal 2x4 stud I install but they are dissimilar metal, usually steel, so will that cause galvanic corrosion?
Approximately how much did this job cost? We have exact same situation but it’s a minor leak that’s progressing. A previous plumber stated that they don’t make the parts for our old pipes seat size or something like that. He’ll have to go in behind like you did but he’ll have to remove a toilet from the other side and then make his own square cut.
I couldn't tell you what brand the old faucet is, but it looks a LOT like a faucet I'm planning on replacing at my Dad's house. That's why I found your video. The house is a late 50's era home that hasn't seen much updating. Your video did have several tips that I plan to follow. Unfortunately I have two things complicating matters. 1st, the leaks there have gone on a long time and the holes around the valves have gotten way too big to be hidden by escutcheons. There will need to be some wall repair involved. 2nd, The house is nearly all original plumbing, which means this faucet is connected to galvanized pipe.🙄 I'll probably need to rip the wall open to unscrew the riser to the shower head. No doubt there is something holding it to the wood framing to keep it from turning. Plus I probably will need to replace that pipe anyway along with the hot and cold supply pipes. I'm actually more comfortable with the plumbing repair part than the wall repair. The repair job on the wall is what I'm praying I don't screw up.😄 Anyway, great video and keep up the good work.
I didn't have the all that pro press when I was plumbing so much easier. I usually just break the handles off looks like a Gerber valve probably got more in fittings than the price of valve 😊
I have that same bathroom fixture which is leaking really bad on the hot water side. The problem is I can’t even get the escutcheon off. What tool do I need to remove it?

If you want to mandate they be in multi-family dwellings, I’m not against that. But if I want full hot water in my own home, damnit let me take that risk myself.
I have no interest in plumbing at all but here I am! Watch the video in full! Great content and work! 🙂
2nd floor, wee fun, then again, I've done 90% of whole bathroom remodels by myself, including custom built cabinets. very not fun and takes way too long. i had helper to carry the largest items, finish drywall, paint and lay the tile, I absolutely hate that work. I did the drywall hanging, tile cutting and paint "primer" though. many times it pays to sub out the work!
so many trips....waste time especially when its time to go home...shoot me..but it keeps us young and ready dawg!
Please do more videos like this, really appreciate your opinions.
Great video Chuck, very informative and helpful. Keep the video's coming!!!!!!!!!!
Your name should be Chuck Yoodimann because YOU DA MAN! Thanks for such great REAL videos!
lol....Plumbing! Live it. Love it.
Thank you, Chuck, for the helpful video! Please add the list of the tools (cutter, crimper, etc.) to the description.
roger that Mikhail.
Man I am so glad I came across you! Awesome job,, thank you""
One more. You're a godsend. Merry Christmas
Gotta love that access panel!
panel was just right size...how many times have we had to cut the top of it...alot!
Great video Chuck!
Thanks Dave.
Just like you used the adjustable pliers to secure the shower arm - use both adjustable plier handles just like a crescent wrench and grip the shower head nut and tighten. No more scars on that nut!
Thanks Joe Joe
Great work on a dirty job!!!
Thanks! Old skillz came out
I’m a plumber in California! Plumbing systems are a lot different here in Cali! Love your vids though! The sewer Sunday one had me cracking up
my man....thanks for tuning in.
Great job man.
Thank you.
i love the video. i have an old time bath/shower faucet. if i go to Lowe's, or Home Depot, i would not be able to find a replacement. The ones at those stores are too narrow for my pipes. A plumber would need to redo the whole pipe system in the wall where the faucet is. I wanna find a new, or somewhat new, faucet to put in there. I would appreciate a reply with a supply house where i can find one.
www.suppliesdepot.com/ and look for a gerber 8" center 3 handle tub and shower faucet. Measure your handles center to center.
Nice work Chuck, most of the videos I've seen only show replacing valve stems ; you actually replaced an existing - Wow ! How much does a job like this cost (labor price) ; i can't find a plumber in my area that will attempt to do the job you did. Thank you !
In case you are still wondering, I was quoted 700 and 900 by two different companies.
Drill up through the 2x4 block with a hole saw then connect the cuts with a recipe saw no hammer and chisel required, makes for a clean install.
not sure what you mean? shower riser?
Chuck Barron yes on the shower riser
true true....good point plumber.
@@ChuckBarron lol
Really enjoyed this, first time seeing the Pro Press tool.
Yes a game changer.
Those faucet handles and covers loom like mine. Could I identify the stem brand that way?
thank you for posting!
My pleasure!
Surfs my go to for mental reset.
what tools are you using to do the solderless connections? Beautiful work my man!
Awesome video. Thanks. Merry Christmas 🎄
Merry Christmas to you also.
You almost made me want to start doing plumbing again for about 10 minutes!!! lmao!! good video
lets do this.
What is the name of those shut-off pieces at @7:14 ? They just slide on copper and no soldering required?!
"My favorite tool, the torch!" then later "I gotta get the propress in there, I don't want to solder"
Thanks for the video. I have old valve and it needs to be replaced but can’t find it at homedepot (those in HD are too long or just not fitting my old house). Anywhere I can still find and buy those old style size valve?
I liked the video just for the commentary sounds... typical guy!! Love I!!!
for sure.
Those are some cool tools. helpful video!
Thanks.
Thanks for the great video.
Thank you
You did a very nice complete play by play professional job other than protecting all the surfaces from scratches with cardboard or fabric, not that the bathroom was mint lol. What did you charge the client or landlord for you labor. 👍🏼
Kind Sir, IF your customer wanted a costly; and buying things that has NOT one thing to do with leaks in the case. IE:
(about $50 bucks and less than an hour)
Of course...IF the customer does not care about outrageous costs; and wants every thing new, sure.
May Jesus have mercy...
you forgot about the integrity of the interior of the valve body from years use. Love your detail plumber. Amen
I gotta wonder how long it took for the connector to the shower arm to leak since he never ProPressed it... Love the pipe cutter and ProPress, being able to replace the leaky valve without replacing the valve was pretty cool, but next time they shut down the building, gotta get rid of the old valves!!!
Mark Leuschen ha! It was pressed or I would not be able to tighten the spout on. That place needs a ton but your right. It all must go.
Your video was a great example of handling the tough situation of "Just make It Work"
Great job Chuck
thanks james
After the cutting the pipes and seating the connectors in the pipe what type of tool is that you used ? It almost looks like you crimped the connectors to the pipe without soldering them , they have those types of tools?
I don't get it though why not replace the individual cartridges and seats; what tipped you off to do the extra work such as cut out the copper pipe and replace the assembly that holds the cartidges?
at some point you cannot repair.
@@ChuckBarron I'm curious too. What made you sure that new cartridges would not be effective?
Chuck, I’m a DIY homeowner who you inspired to buy an RP241 prrrrro pressssss. Redid my entire basement pipe network with concerning OCD precision. Also ended up getting the mega & PEX jaws. Tools are my crack. You’d be proud.
I have basically this same (possibly older American Standard? 1950’s install) three handle tub/shower diverter at my Jersey shore home. What brand/model did you use here for the replacement valve bodies/diverter? I’d like to do this exact repair on my shower.
12:10
Thanks in advance.
Lets go! Send pics
Here in SoCal, we would just remodel this old shower and install a single handle shower valve.
yes...thats our policy or mixing valve on water heater.
"AND THERE GOES ANOTHER SATISFIED SKIN-FLINT BUILDING OWNER!!!"LOL!!!I'm sorry Chuck,I couldn't resist.LOL!!!God bless you and yours my Brother.
Thank you.
Nice clean job!
Thanks anthony
Just awesome, and love the Rockabilly music too!
I don't care what anyone says, I love old three valve faucets.
If I'm installing a 3 handle valve like in this video but using pex, how should the valve be secured? I'm seeing pipe straps online which I could screw into a horizontal 2x4 stud I install but they are dissimilar metal, usually steel, so will that cause galvanic corrosion?
that the problem with pex. You lose that pipe help as it may be...secure backing boards will help.
Approximately how much did this job cost? We have exact same situation but it’s a minor leak that’s progressing. A previous plumber stated that they don’t make the parts for our old pipes seat size or something like that. He’ll have to go in behind like you did but he’ll have to remove a toilet from the other side and then make his own square cut.
you have a situation. Anytime a fixtures has no access its a costly factor.
The repair job on the wall is what I'm praying I don't screw up.😄 Anyway, great video and keep up the good work.
good luck
I think I have the exact same problem cuz that little pipe thingy for my shower won't budge for nothing smh.
Nice cordless tools to do the job !
That tub needs a lot more work than a new Faucet !
What type of power tool is that to cut and tighten the pipe.
I didn't have the all that pro press when I was plumbing so much easier. I usually just break the handles off looks like a Gerber valve probably got more in fittings than the price of valve 😊
Very efficient good job
Ha. This one. A tough one.
Hi Chuck, very well done! May I ask the name of the two red Milwaukee power tools you used, and are the new fittings Shark Bite? Thanks
no shark bite. its a propress tool / uses special fittings.
Joe, dig your videos. Thanks for sharing
Indeed. thank you.
I have that same bathroom fixture which is leaking really bad on the hot water side. The problem is I can’t even get the escutcheon off. What tool do I need to remove it?
I need help I’m at 2:45 and what appears to have a lip for you to grab is flush on mine
American Standard. I have these in my 1967 bathroom.
Classic.
