  • Upper respiratory infections in shelters and rescues is the number one medical problem seen in cats. Many organizations spend hundreds to thousands of dollars yearly on medications that simply do not work. This video will show shelter employees and fosters safe procedurs to treat cats with symptoms, and save resources that could be used elsewhere while providing optimal medical care for the cat. This talk was produced with a grant from Maddie's Fund.

    I have treated all my cats that have had URI and even UTIs with diluted Organic Apple Cider Vinegar mixed in wet food, tuna juice or if they weren't eating, I dip their paws in 50/50 water and Apple Cider Vinegar. EVERY single time within 3 days their symptoms either were almost gone or completely gone! I continue to give it 4 more days to be sure the infection is gone. No expensive vet visits and no harmful antibiotics!

      THANK YOU!!! My gal is weeks from 13 and she had URI's from the 4 months I got her. Baytril has been the go to for years, but only kept her clear for a couple weeks, so I pretty much just dealt with it. Baytril no longer seems to work, just tried the ACV, which I've personally used every night myself for the last 7 years and has been a God sent for my own allergies, so I wasn't shocked when after just one dip she's reacting very well to this. You should get the word out, Baytril causes blindness and honestly doesn't do much.

    I just adopted a kitten from a shelter and she developed an upper respiratory infection. We can't get into the vet for a few days due to the corona outbreak so this video was very very helpful. Luckily she's in a quiet home with me that she immediately was walking around like she owns the place so I feel her stress level is pretty low. I will monitor her closely and follow the great guidelines you outlined here. Thanks so much for making this video!

    I’ve began to hear some rasp to one of my kittens breathing. I’m starting to think it is the early signs of what could become aspiration pneumonia. I’ve done quite a bit of research and I also know at this age they cannot be given antibiotics as they are too young. They are 8 days old. I believe she aspirated a little and is having trouble getting it out. I’ve heard to use a nebulizer with saline solution and to try coupage afterwards. I’m just not sure of what saline solution products are safe for them. I have tried researching as best as I can although haven’t had any luck. Was wondering if you could share some kitten friendly saline products to help.

    So we have 4 cats and the oldest cat which is 13 started sneezing and you could hear congestion and he had clear discharge from his nose. We found a natural remedy online called homeopet that we gave the older one and he got better within 4 days and now the 3 year old has the same symptoms so it seems to be spreading. The 3 year old I think is in the toughest time of it now I believe but we are giving him the same medicine as the old cat. My issue is when to take him to the vet, like what is the time where you need to take him in? He does not have colored discharge right now it is just clear discharge.

    My cat was dead because of URI. He was only 1.5 yrs old. I had done everything to save him including both medication & force-feeding. It was very difficult to forced feed him due to his mouth ulcers. He suffered a lot in the last two weeks, finally died on my hand. I couldn't believe this, it was like a nightmare to me. He was a very playful cat & rat killing machine. Man, this disease needs a serious vaccine.

    Thank you for this video! I have a few questions. What happens if a course of doxycycline doesn't help? I just adopted two ex-street cats who are sneezing and coughing up thick mucus. They are perky, just very leaky! According to their vet records, they were given a 7day course of 100mg of doxycycline about a month ago. Yet they are with us and still sick! The foster was giving them lysine powder but I'm finding myself quite nervous for our new cats' health! Booking into a vet asap, but wondering if you having any ideas?

    is lysine can help the cat recover?

    • @MaddiesFundEducation
      @MaddiesFundEducation  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are opposing views on this. Some say "treatment of cat URIs requires supportive care mainly with oral antibiotics. Stubborn cases might require antiviral drugs and medicated eye ointments. The amino acid lysine is often beneficial in helping cats recover from URI symptoms caused by the herpes virus."
      Others say "There is evidence at multiple levels that lysine supplementation is not effective for the prevention or treatment of feline herpesvirus 1 infection in cats. Lysine does not have any antiviral properties, but is believed to act by lowering arginine levels."

      Some antibiotics need combinations with other medications in oder to work efficiently. Also, using antibiotics the wrong way can develop organisms that are resistant to antibiotics and this is very dangerous. You might ended up harming rather than helping your pets.

    I asked a TH-cam vet about using (for humans at health food store n online) Quantum Health brand of Super Lysine+ liquid extract. He didn't respond like he did the other ppl on TH-cam. (So I hope u may read this n clarify some pickle of issues). Years back I used the above Lysine on my cat prior for herpes for 3 wks and he came out it. Local vet at the time said 1 dropper full once a day into wet food was fine. He had no relapse for years still to this day, thankfully. Recently my 2 geriatric cats got URI (sneezing n slurpy snotty sounds while eatting). After ordering the Lysine above mentioned, I went ahead to the vet cause one had a fever. They gave her a antibiotic shot n prescribed the other to take home n give oral antibiotics of Clavamox since he wasn't seen. One day after vet, my 3rd cat (out of 4) started sneezing too. Now, I heard from 2 different vets that my lysine was not ok, while the other said it was safe. Is it safe, productive n ok to use....if so, a dropper full ok or should I use less or none at all for URI? Since they been lil sick, I been putting some honey into their wet food for natural antibiotics to help as well. (Heard this was good). See, my son has inoperable cancer and going to the vet took more than everything n cannot afford going back for the new sick cat. So if u give me some solid good advice, I surely would appreciate the blessing about what or what not to do. Thank you so much in advance if you read this! May abundance of infinite blessings be yours, and more so, to all! God bless!

      Lysine is great in humans for viral infections also!
      Many if not all cancers can be cured via fasting. The worst might require a dry fast bu this should only be done in persons who have good nutritional status esp B vits (not safe if chronic vegan). Lesser forms of fatsing like water or veg juice fasts often work on lesser cancers, it depends a lot on the individual but in general fasting fixes almost everything except broken bones and severe trauma...in short, takes care of the stuff docs are not actually good at fixing.
