Nick Angelini, drummer for the hardcore punk band A Wilhelm Scream, has been a professional touring musician for over two decades. And in recent years, he's taken up building the instrument he play! Nick's drum company, Wail City Percussion, pumps out some of the wildest stave snare drums, drum kits, and other drums too (like octobons).
Today, we're looking at a 14x6" walnut/maple stave construction drum that packs a real percussive punch. Here are the drum details:

Drum audio was captured with two Universal Audio Apollo x8p interfaces using 1073 preamp modeling.
Mics include:
- SE Electronics V-Kick (Kick In)
- Dr. Alien Smith Alien8 (Kick Out)
- Shure Unidyne III SM57 (Snare Top) - Rode NT55 w/ Cardioid Capsule (Snare Top)
- Audio-Technica ATM650 (Snare Bottom)
- Sennheiser MD-421 (Each Tom)
- AKG C414 TLII Pair (Overheads)
- Apex 210B Ribbon into Soyuz Launcher (Room)
- Shure 588SB (Vocal)
I use Logic Pro X, Waves Audio plugins, and I believe that all drums are good drums (even roto toms).

How do you get that perfect reverb from the drums? Is that mostly room mics?
Believe it or not, it’s one cheapy ribbon mic 30-40 feet out from the kit with Waves CLA-Drums on it. That’s my secret! 😂😂😂
@@timbofromkeno great!! Do you just bring up the OH’s ever so slightly in the mix to gain that effect?
@@StuartJrBarrett For sure! But because of the shape of my room, I basically just rely on the overheads for cymbal sounds, and then I get that big fat picture of the whole kit from the room mic.
