We used an iron to laminate plastic bags together to make a strong fabric that feels like a synthetic leather. Jessie Uyeda then sewed that fabric into a sturdy laptop bag.

I've seen this technique used in a number of videos, but your bag is the only one polished enough for me to be willing to take it out in public. FYI, the double-stitching technique you use is called "flat-felled seams"--yep, there's a real term for it lol. Great job!!!

This looks amazing! I do have a few questions however:
1. Does the plastic give off a smell when you're melting it? I am concerned that I should do that step outside, because it does seem like it would give off fumes, or at least an unpleasant odor that I wouldn't want in the house.
2. How sturdy is it? Could I make something like a reusable shopping tote with this method that could carry a lot more weight than a laptop bag would?

Genious!! I will be making reusable shopping bags from all of my plastic bags that I can NOT throw away. They are very useful around the house but this makes them cute and a lot more durable!! I can't wait to use my Target bags and paw print bags and some of my cute printed shopping bags! So cute!! Thank you so much for sharing!! I can't wait to get started!!

That's such a brilliant idea. Sadly most stores in Germany have by now replaced the plastic bags by paper or fabric. While this is a great initiative it makes it hard to replicate this project. :-)

I could mail you some of mine... I'm good at bringing reusable bags to the grocery store, but I still have plenty of plastic bags from Home Depot, Lowes, department stores, etc.

Make sure to be doing this in a well ventilated area because melting plastic bags creates toxic fumes!
For sure. The room was well ventilated and the amount of time it takes to fuse the layers together is very small. Plus, it helps that they plastic is not completely melted; just heated to a temperature at which they will fuse.
Does teflon make toxic fumes?

Have you seen the trick where you can spiralize plastic bottles into super strong cord? I'd love to see a project using that material. It's so strong! Anyway, I love the design - makes me want to learn sewing.

The plastic on this bag is so cool (has a waxed paper-cotton/leather effect going on), you could make these bags so much better, by rolling and top stitching the seams, and adding plastic tubing to the handles. I am inspired, but now need some cool brown plastic bags, I guess I am off to Home Depot!

whichever way, i love the color of it and how melting the plastic bags deepens the color.. I wonder how that will work with white-ish plastic bags!

I wonder if you could also put a layer of some sort of patterned plastic on top of the 4 bags so that once you condense everything, it has a specific pattern or design?

All the plastic bags that aren’t replaced with reusable ones here are biodegradable and would fall apart. If you used clean veggie bags, (those clear, crimped tube ones), you could layer them with cut shapes of other coloured opaque plastics or even scraps of material, thread, yarn, etc. ooh - glitter!!!!! I gotta go lie down; too many possibilities sounding so good it’s making me dizzy. 💫

HomeMadeModern - what if you were to iron the bags a second time over some type of corrugated metal panel, I say second time because I would want to insure that the layers of plastic have already bonded together. There are some pretty cool patterns in the panels, or even a loosely woven screen, but think smooth might be good as well.
HomeMadeModern I wonder if you could add in a layer or two of plastic netting in between bags, that may add in a cross hatching kind of element
What if you were to crinkle up aluminum foil and open it up again and put that under the bags while you iron it? Maybe even sandwich it between two layers of foil?

Yes but... the level of difficulty rises! The bags shrink down quite a bit as the plastic melts
