cost of living in Madagascar 2022

- how much I spend to live in Madagascar per month as a foreign that travels to the UK once a year and over seas to Kenya/ South Africa or Thailand every 5 months total costs for me to live a nice life comes to about £1500 or $2000 per month this is split up 55% flights, travel, visa's, my personal living costs, gifts & doctors then 45% family household living costs.
to live a very basic life with Madagascar residents could be done for as little as $500 by living in a beach hut, eating the local cuisine and getting about on the local transport this can be a sweet way to live life imo however if you like to live like a king going out and about in you're new 4x4, having staff to look after you and your big 4 bed house with you're partner and kids you will be looking at about £2250 or $3000 per month.

Very interesting....I love Madagascar....
Madagascar is a great country to visit or live it's so different from the West.
A really helpful video. Thanks!
After visiting in 2018, I’m planning on going to Taolagnaro for a few months to teach English (maybe longer if I enjoy it there) so this is such a useful video. I know prices may vary, but it’s given me a good idea on what to expect!
I will do an update video for 2023 as some prices have changed.
That would be great. Thanks! I will keep an eye out for it.
Come June off this year I’ll be in Madagascar for two years. I’d love to see the people and know more about it. Have you learned their language yet?
That's good Madagascar is fantastic, I can speak quite a bit of the local language
Do any of the safaris have Range Rovers; or other off road vehicles for the tourists?
They use Nissan patrols Toyota land cruises but there is no big animal safaris, there is national parks with birds snakes tortoises and monuments the cars normally take you to the park then a guide walks you around I think 🤔
I've never been to one
what do you think the cheapest someone can survive on? like cooking all meals as a vegan (no meat) and living in a $200 per month house or less with internet, visa costs, no partying, drinking or anything? just living a budget lifestyle
You can rent from $80 with electricity and water, food should cost you $100 fresh from the market, visas can cost a lot like $80 a month with corruption money to the police to stay for a long time or get residently, you can buy a water purifier for $15 so you can drink tap water so for $300 you could survive $500 will be plenty + flights
@@passivenomads perfect thanks for the itemized breakdown
@@passivenomads the houses usually come unfurnished for that price? how much estimated would I need to spend on furnishing the place?
Hey) thank for posting.
Im visiting Madagascar this month. I'm from India. Hopefully meet you in one of the shacks on the beach.
Good for you its a nice time of year to visit Madagascar 🇲🇬 give us a shout when you're here
Did you already visited madagascar? How was it?
Interesting breakdown of costs as I’m long term UK visitor to Thailand & noticed a few Madagascan ladies of the night working in Pattaya over the yrs….always thought how beautiful they are as well as the island there looks stunning. Got a great house location there too. Always thought the infrastructure & the local, language being the biggest barriers. Thailand is hard to beat on cost of living & infrastructure tho….liked & subbed🤔😉😎
Hi Gord8743, the costs have gone up a bit, but it's still possible to live well on $1000 a month, there's some stunning ladies in Madagascar, and they all love a foreign guy you should pop over fir a holiday 😀
@@passivenomads thx mate…from 4C in Manchester that’s very tempting!! Always said the Madagascan ladies look better than the Thais as better curvy thicker shape which I go for…plus stunning beaches n low costs..what’s not to like😉😎 👍🏻
What was the process like to get a Residency permit, short or long term?
It’s a lot of running around and can take a few months but it’s worth it in the end
@@passivenomads For a Permit?! Heavens ok.
Really enjoying your videos. Out of curiosity, why did you choose to base yourself in Madagascar? Do you have some sort of connection with it? I know it seems really beautiful and cheap, but there area many places like that, so I'm curious to hear how you ended up there. Cheers
Thank Beebo I'm glad you're enjoying the channel
many people have asked the same question, why I moved to Madagascar I will do a video today and put it up later on today 👍
@@passivenomads awesome !
You have so much space! 4 bedrooms?! I’m single with 2 bedrooms and it’s more than what I need. 200 bucks a month!? You’re Balling! Only real setback are the price on imported goods IE car
I have a large family there's 7 of us that live there.
I need to do a new cost of living video as the costs have gone up.
@@passivenomads oh well then that beautiful! Nice area too so green and colorful. Sux the rent went up
@Michael Pratchett the rents not so bad at $230 but the food bill is going up more and more every week.
The good news is life's not so bad when you get to wake up in paradise each morning ✨️
@@passivenomads oh, that’s not so bad at all!(I still prefer less expensive as possible, although the price is amazing considering what we pay) $20 bucks as in increase is meh relatively high though. Places that are hidden gems like Madagascar are amazing until the word gets out then here comes the tourists then down the drain everything goes!
Not bad, it’s means a single person with no vices can live good there, with less than a $1000 a month, in a 2 bedroom apartment!!
How do you deal with the electricity issues in madagascar? I was in madagascar this past june at the hotels wasnt an issue. However from the people i have met living at their own personal homes it tends to come and go whenever. Does that happen at your home? I thought solar panels fixed the electricity issues
Hi Charlie yes it's a real pain the problem is that the directors of the electricity company like to make extra money by stealing the gasoline ⛽️ to sell on the black market so they then have to turn the generators off for a 12 hour period.
It's not all the time but it can be 2 or 3 times a month I deal with it by exepting that that's how it is in Madagascar and go to bed at 8am instead of the planed 11pm
Solar panels is the way to go if you own you're own house but there are thefts of the panels sometimes
Hello, could you tell me how to obtain a residence permit?
You need to apply for a transformable Visa Get a copy of criminal record contact your local embassy To get the application started
Thanks for the information 🤗
Hello fellow Brit.. I'm from UK been a nomad for 16 years.. I'm looking to head there at some point this year. Hope we can connect
Fantastic the best time to come to nosy be is may to December hope to see you soon
@@passivenomads OK sounds great. I'm india at the mo, need to have a hernia op, I think I'm to young for this crap yet 😁.. Ill be headed back to Kenya as some point and will either hitch hike or buy a motor bike and head south.. And clues if there are boats leaving from Mozambique going to Madagascar?
Are there safe moorings to live aboard ?
Yes there’s a boat club in nosy be with its own marina
Nice video. Have you ever had a security problem there?
No I've had no problems I can say the same for most foreign people but things do happen from time to time like every country.
Antananarivo is where most problems will happen with pickpockets or street robbery after dark
@@passivenomads that's ok then :) i often read about the insecurity there, but surely the newspapers distort the reality
Interesting and informative 🇯🇲
What are the hospitals, medical and dental care like there in Madagascar???
They can patch you up but a heart attack could be a big problem the dentist is cheap and well trained if your in need of treatment it's best to fly to Reunion island imo
Anything serious your chances there a low, best bet is to go to a hospital in the Reunion.
I like your channel mate , keep it up.
Nice one Ben 👍
how about the internet , how many GB s and cost for that ?
On a phone 100G is $40, hard wired to your house 150G is $32
Hi Bro, i'm from UK arriving to Nosy Be in July. I'm looking for a 2 bedrooom flat to rent. Any recomendations of agencies, or contacts I could get in touch with?
Email me at passivenomads@gmail.com and I can point you in the right direction as its not easy 👌
@@passivenomads done did, thanks
Wow so on my state pension I could have a pretty good lifestyle,,, I wonder the price of a motorbike?
You can buy a India or Chinese 125cc motocross bike new for $1,100 or a Honda 125cc for $2400 I would go with the Honda
@@passivenomads Nah there,s nothing wrong with a Chinese, I v ha a few..In fact I married one.. Thanks for all the info,I found it most helpful,,,, Cheers
@@lipsee100 no problem pal I must say your the first guy I know that married a motorbike lol
Haha
Damn so 1500 gbp per month, as expensive as living in the UK then 🤣 But yeah NB is expensive especially restaurants i don't know wtf is up with them charging 10-50k for a meal, here in thailand food is much cheaper
Thailand takes some beating
Yes, but don't forget, this is the most "expensive" place in Madagascar, the highly tourist-y island of Nosy Be.
This being said, I also find it surprising that life in countries with 1/20, 1/30, 1/40 of the GDP (PPP) per capita of that of the UK, Germany, France etc. can cost half of what it costs back "home".
Thank you
hi, What jobs does the maid do in the house? kitchen too?
She is 18 year old from is Manjunga Madagascar she was are maid last year when we lived in Manjunga.
She dose everything cooks cleaning and washing the clothes along with going the market to buy the fresh food for the day.
I pay her 150,000ar a month $38 she works her own schedule from 6.30am till 8pm 7 days a week
@Trevor Smith yesim sure she could i seen her talking with an old Wight guy the other week maybe she will run away for the American dream soon
In madagascar maid can do everything at home household chores, cleaning, laundry, looking after your kids if you have it, cooking, doing shopping,... so they do everything at home and the prices is cheap unlike abroad you have to pay per hour in madagascar you pay them per month.
How safe is it ?
It's extremely safe that a lady or a man can walk around all day with no problems, even at night in most places. The biggest danger is malaria.
Can a western man make it without speaking there language ?
For a holiday yes but for loving in Madagascar if you don't speak French or Malagasy it will be a hard life as for me I only speak English with a small amount of Malagasy but I always have someone around me that can translate for me.
@@passivenomads Thanks for your honesty. You have a wealth of knowledge that you speak I enjoy listening
@@pitmasterc5324 thanks pal
@@passivenomads Yes. True.
Nice one 🙏🏽

Thanks, what's the best way to get a good rate on accommodation for a month please? Must have WIFI...TIA
£12,000 equals US$40,000?
Maybe Malagasy ar I would have to watch the videos to see if there's a mistake the video is two years out of date I did a new video the other dat COST OF LIVING MADAGASCAR 2024
It was my Accent I say twelve thousand pounds fourteen thousand dollars
@@passivenomads Thank you for clarifying that for me. Actually, I should have figured it out on my own - so, my fault. Cheers!
What about insurances?
You would need to get insurance from your home country, I don't have any at all but I wouldn't advise to follow my lead
This was awesome to learn, thank you.
Glad it was helpful! Check out the new 2024 cost of living video
was it difficult for you to get residency there?
It's very easy to get residents normally you apply for a 2 year to start then a 5 year followed by life time you need to start you're application from America with a changeable visa as it can't be done in Madagascar for reasons unknown , I spent years just getting 3 month visas then I would go on a visa run to a nearby country or go back to the UK for business where I have rental properties.
The max visa is now just 2 months but can be extended by a month to 3 month for about $30 at a big city police station
@@passivenomads thanks. my wife will come to america first, then Ill look into getting the 2 year visa.
@@sethlover1211 yes that's a good plan it can be difficult for a local to get a visa to leave mada especially if she has no assets, and she's not legally married though.
I took my wife on honeymoon to Mauritius and the police in the airport in Tana didn't won't to let her go it took 10 minutes and a police Sargent to get her out and then On arrival in Mauritius the question her to death, It seems the Madagascar passport is not worth the paper it's written on compared to an American or European one Sometimes they wanna see proof thatShe has at least 10 million in the bank account But don't panic about what I say this is Madagascar and anything's possible here
@@passivenomads i filed for a fiance visa last year. Im waiting on that now. a lady at the embassy told me that was the best way to go. I have to wait about one more month on that.
@Trevor Smith it's a funny old world where in the land of the free like France you need permission from the government.
I would say yes $450 can be enough to live in Madagascar in the south would be best Toliara.

@@97GRIMREAPER there's no problem to having a quiet smoke on the beach but it is illegal.
It's wide spread.
The rain is normally of a night time I'm sure you will be able to chill 😎 on yhe beach ⛱️ in the day time

@Popeye yes it's a poor 2 out of a maximum 10
What do you do for work?
I make most of my money from passive income, mainly property rental in the UK but in Madagascar I build houses and buy and sell land
Con las carreteras como están, tardas 4 ó 5 horas en llegar de una cama a otra. Y eso si no te cortan la luz por el camino 🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂🤣
