    There is a faction in this game (the main faction) called Vinci, and the inspiration for this faction's artstyle and aesthetic has stuck with me and pops into my head so often and so consistently that it's often the main cause of me going back to play the game over the past decade.
    The faction is basically a human civilization who are similar to us, but they took another path in an alternate history where Leonardo Da Vinci's inventions and ideas became the main source of human technology going forward, and all human technology was developed and built upon those foundational ideas that Da Vinci penned in his coded notes, discovered after his death (in real life).
    I have sworn to myself if I ever get a chance to make some kind of fantasy universe or write some kind of fiction (not gonna happen) I will rip off this idea and go my own way with it, and will even thank the developers in the credits for coming up with this and me seeing it when I was a kid.
    It's hard to explain why this has stood out so much to me in a vast sea of artstyles that have washed over my eyes and passed through my imagination over the years, why this one keeps coming back, I'm not sure, but the concept itself is a goldmine and can be taken in all kinds of directions that might not resemble the Rise of Legends style, but would still have this specific unique indistinguishable look that could only come from those original drawings.
    You have to see the technology compared to Da Vinci's notes, and let your imagination loose on what you might do with that foundation in another world, maybe one that is reaching space travel or just a more dark, gritty take on it. You can do so many things that would be unforgettable and unique. The idea itself is lent to an array of differing approaches, but they all would have this retrofuturistic steampunk aesthetic that would be a joy to look at with modern graphics and CGI to bring any offshoot vision to life.

    So THAT'S why it was so satisfying to move the flying hero around while the clockworks felt so hard and stiffy. Nice observation. I'm 25 now and had the 4-disc.

      After looking at it closer, i noticed that the main units that are 'lagging' compared to others, are Vinci clockwork units; leviathan, spiders etc. Other units dont have THAT much of an issue with it, and tbh until i watched this clip, i didn't even realise it that much, in my mind it all looked well because, well, those are CLOCKWORK robots, they are supposed to move slowly, more mechanically etc. At least thats how i always thought about it.

    Yeah the availability issue makes it less "should you play it" and more "can you play it". personally I find this to be one of those games that I keep coming back to, it's such a unique and fun experience. a lot of the problems I think stem from the fact that big huge games never really got to finish it. this is definitely one of those games to wait for a remaster before you get it.

    One of my all time favorites. ROL is one of the games that I put many, many hours into and still to this day have an itch to revisit now and then. And for a game I love so much, it's sad how little people know or care about it. This game is well balanced, creatively designed, and a blast to play (campaign mode is less so, but still worth at least one play through). Still got the 4 disk set a few feet away from my PC at all times just in case I feel some nostalgia. I honestly just wish this game got some more attention. Have a wiki that's actually worth a damn. Have youtubers and streamers going over strategies and gimmicks. Based on the fact that this game has a fanbase 13 years after release, I feel like it deserves more than it got. Thanks for looking at this game, hopefully your video brought this gem a little bit more attention.

    I still play this game because of a few reasons. Nostalgia is a big factor I must admit, because for me this was and is still a graphically amazing game, having come from dawn of war and rise of nations, the amount of animations and particle effects are still great fun to watch. I also love feeling like I'm reseraching as the Vinci, going towards these amazing inventions of tanks and the leviathan, while as the Alain I feel like I'm summoning great hordes and finally I'm using some of the most powerful single entity units in the Cutol, I just like being in the world and I was at just the right age when I played the campaign where it caught my imagination... and didn't have better stories to compare it to, but even now in 2022, I still find myself booting it up every once in a while just to see these amazing cities of steam, sand or ALIEN DEATH BALLS go at it :)

  • @Reaper1722
    @Reaper1722 5 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    It was released in a time when i was also fascinated by the big battles of the Total War games. This game allowed me to enjoy those kinds of battles in a simpler way. This also came during a time when most fantasy RTS are the usual Humans vs Orcs vs Elves, so it was a breath of fresh air to be introduced to these unique factions.
    It really bothers me why no developer has remastered this yet. I'm pretty sure it's not gonna be that difficult too since the graphics still holds its own even to this day. I also wish Gearbox would make the remaster and give it the same treatment they gave Homeworld graphics-wise but that's a stretch.

    Probably ranks up to one of my favorite games of all time. Maybe its cuz they don't make RTS games like they use to anymore, but I still play this game to this day. The super epic cross map battle mixed with a pretty challenging AI makes it still very enjoyable. Wish that the super hard Vinci AI's actually built their Super unit or they added an option where we can disable the creation of Hero Units or National spells, it would've made this game even better. Also, if the map editor didn't crash like every 5 minutes, I'd LOVE to make maps for this game.

    Was such a huge part of my childhood - along with Warcraft 3, Empire Earth and Rome: Total War. Its a shame you can't get it anywhere anymore, and the original devs now only make mobile games. I still have the box copy lying around here, and it was an absolute joy to play. I personally liked the jittery animations for the Clockwork men, as it did reinforce the fact that they were running off electricity and gears - though the sound design is lacking for them, looking back on it. I think my favorite map had to be Doge's Hammer, the map with the giant missile launcher in the center of it. What really blows me away to this day though, is the trailer and intro cutscene: its so beautifully-animated and holds up so well, I can only imagine the time and money that was put into it

    I got both this and Age of Empires 3 shortly after getting my 'own' cheap laptop computer as a going-to-college gift. I remember this very fondly as a great asymmetric [now that I know the words to use] RTS... almost as much as I remember the integrated Intel GPU on my computer having its driver crash every couple minutes as I chugged along at like 15 FPS on lowest settings.
    Really wish we could see this re-released on GOG, Steam, wherever, even if it's just like it was back in the day...

    The thing is, the audio isnt actually bad at all.
    The reason you may think so is because the game pace is slow. Look at any other RTS you fire almost 3-4 times faster than the musket troopers that the Vinci have. Honestly and personally making this one of the greatest games of all time. Removing the awful Micro management Starcraft has (****PERSONAL OPINION****) allowing the player to actually SEE whats happening to their units instead of attack move. ANDDDDD THEIR ALL DEAD in 0.3 seconds. And allowing new players to get as good as "pro" level players "faster". Obviously not instantly.
    The game in itself had some flaws absolutely. Especially when your hero dies, and when someone has a really high dominance in specific fields. Or has the better Racial Class ability... *AHEM* Star Bolt from the Cuotl.
    Anyway, this game brings a massive diversity to RTS's and allows trashy players to reach a stride to actually enjoy the game at all. God I wish we had something like this again... I miss it so much...

    Considering this game came out in 2006, and probably didn't have a big budge, I think it's unfair to criticize the 30 fps animation or sound effect. If you compare to other strategy games that came in 2006, like Medieval 2 or LotR: BfME2, it's very comparable if not better graphic wise.

    I feel like, from a gameplay perspective, RoL takes a lot of the good gameplay decisions of RoN and distills them into something more potent. It keeps things like borders, attrition, and cities and gets rid of the re-skinned countries of RoN. I love both games, but trying to go back to RoN with the 250 max unit cap feels incredibly difficult for me in comparison to RoL. Even with the dated graphics and sound, the core is special, and it deserves that remaster.

    I suspect they only remaster games that sold well. A lot like sequels, the basic logic behind making a remaster is that you can cash in on the success of the original with minimal risk, and unlike wit sequels, do so with comparatively small investment. The less popular you original game was, the bigger your risk, the more you have to market it, the more effort you have to put in etc.
    In a world where the goal of investment is to extract profit, we can see where this is going.

    • @VITAS874

      better if they add cut content in remastered games (but they don't because they don't care about it, only money important) they just playing on nostalgia, rise prices and people, people don't care they eat everything that give them unfortunately, eating more garbage, people don't use brains.

    • @raylast3873
      @raylast3873 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@VITAS874 I don‘t really think it‘s as simple as people buying garbage. They still get something out of it, or they wouldn‘t buy. Remember a lot of these products were very good, and so even playing an identical game again can be worth your time. It just isn‘t worth the same money x years later. But unfortunately the consumer has basically no control over prices.

    The animation thing is a performance technique, still used in modern games today, because the game was pushing cutting edge visuals at the time along with some pretty expensive lighting systems, certain animations have had there frames cut to reduce load (I expect memory in this case), modern games usually use this in a LOD system, its likely if this game used the same technique being used today it would dynamically cut animation frame rates but here it is probably baked in. Dark Souls for example uses this in its culling system. Funny thing is I never noticed this while playing RoL.

    One of my favourite RTS games is supreme commander (the first) as it's just fucking massive. I mean not that the AI can handle an 81×81km map, but still, watching 6 cybran battleships fire at the enemy base with that satisfying bang is just awesome. Only big issue I have with it is that it's in 32 bits and when you clash a giant army against another giant army it quickly uses up the 2GB of RAM and crashes.

    It's probably to this day the RTS game with the most original factions ever made (does Impossible creatures have factions ?). Steampunk is not rare, but Vincipunk ? 1001 nights mythology (outside of Prince of Persia) ? South-american Stargate ? At a time where you had orcs and dwarves everywhere it was really something to see someone trying something new, but it's probably also why it didn't get that much popularity... and also maybe having the name "rise of" if it's too different from the 1st one made fans of the 1st unhappy.

    I Loved ROL on it's release, played it to death. Unfortunately a bad online patch that people couldn't download killed the multiplayer community, and online/LAN games became hours of frustration w/ settings trying to connect after the release of Windows 7. The online games were fun and so much better than any of the other RTSs I have played over the years, it was such a shame it was mismanaged.

    This game is part of a dying genre, games that have a fully-fleshed out singleplayer campaign that makes it worth the price. So many RTS games these days are focused on multiplayer and really forget that a strong campaign mode is an important part of the experience. I'm now playing it for the 3rd time, this time downloaded instead of using my old CD.
    Final review: This game is good, but it could have been GREAT. A bit more polish and story writing would have made the campaign close to warcraft 3 or starcraft 2 in terms of writing. As it is there is the hint of what was clearly planned to be much more (shown in the cutscenes and still images for certain maps.) It's obvious there was a story here about a guy losing loved ones, questing for revenge, and being consumed by it after losing himself. The concept for the different factions is really interesting but there isn't much difference between them other than basic flavor. Each has access to a siege unit, a big unit, an uber unit with similar powers, etc. A bit more time and they would have been so much more.
    I don't want a remaster of this game, instead I would prefer a sequel that keeps the same factions but finally finishes it.
