Why does no one ever point out that this game has one of the crispest rock, paper, scissors systems of any RTS. Every unit in the game has some viability, and that is rare. In most C&C games infantry has no use at all. Here combined arms is almost a must.

You know I understand the whole 'these units look generic' argument. But I personally LOVED that they look 'normal' like something you might actually see in real life. I always liked that about C&C. Maybe it's just because C&C was what I grew up on (and Red Alert came a little later, along with its wackiness) but, tbh, I'll always miss the pseudo realistic looks of the C&C games. It gave it some life in a way.
I get it! I loved them in World in Conflict because how authentic they felt. Everyone likes different things, and that's ok with me. Glad we're able to voice our opinions and chat about it all!
Same. Though I also liked the original C&C, and RedAlert. However I had a real problem relating to the stuff in C&C2, RA2 and beyond; they just became too wacky that they no-longer felt grounded in reality.
These games are ready for a remaster, update the sound and the graphics, add a decent multiplayer and an improved AI, and the games would again start selling like hotcakes. The core gameplay is still very good.

@@Zade_95 Wish you'd tried some of the many large scale mods from moddb.com like Contra 009, Rise of the Reds, or Shockwave. The original game is pretty long in the tooth and these mods add SOOO much.
Honestly, I'm amazed that in the midst of 2nd Iraqi war and war paranoia all around they got green light for such a project where a tractor xould literally spew anthrax into houses.

Apparently witnessing WMDs being launched into cities is cool and good but actually controlling them is beyond the pale. Speaking of the Chinese, I don't think their treatment in Zero Hour would pass these days either. I get they did that to balance out the US jingoism in the base game, but still.
@@BLOrtega i think pcannon is better cause it has a lower cd compared to scud and nuclear, tho to be fair scud and nuke can clean a wide field easily as to why you don't need that many, but pcannons have high damage but small aoe so that's mainly the reason why i stack them
Two big things you missed out on that i think are a great part of the game. 1 zero hour brings 3 sub sections to each army. You can still pick the normal faction or the sub version. The sub versions are specialised with special units and additional strength and weakness. 2 i can't recall the name but there's a game mode in zero hour were you go up against the sub fractions. Each leader through the battle will be on the radio mocking the player. The audio for each general is fun. Shout out to the toxic general for the GLA and the airforce guy for the USA.

Infantry, airforce, superweapons and stealth all lost tanks. Demos lost bioweapons. Toxin general lost high explosive weaponry. What exactly did the Nuke general gain in terms of weakness? His migs did the same damage as normal un-upgraded migs and with the nuke upgrade were a lot more destructive in the short term and left radiation in the long term. His tanks started out faster than any other faction's. His superweapons were cheaper. To my mind the only thing I can think he lost was napalm on the migs but he still had inferno cannons and dragon tanks and this loss isn't really a weakness at all given everything he gains. Also it was the 'Generals Challenge' mode and it was awesome, but I'd love to try playing as the boss general, having access to all three superweapons and having your secondary tank be the Paladin sounds like fun.
You mean the challenges. Sure they are fun the first few times but they get boring fast. Also play it enough times and you will find the AI to be really predictable and easy to beat even on hard. But hey at least the challenges are a great way to get acquianted with the subs.
Generals is amazing. "Built with US quality" - Edit: also the soundtrack (specifically the USA soundtrack) is fantastic, to the point that the generals music is used in many other forms of media. They had one of the USA soundtracks in "Impractical Jokers" lol
I remember being at somebody's house and they were watching that "Expedition Unknown" show on Travel Channel... and I shit you not, they had one of the Chinese songs from Generals on the show.
Actually it might happen. They've confirmed several remasters and generals could be on that list. However I fear that they'll bring in political correctness which means no suicide bombers, slaves, less stereotypical dialogue, toxin weapons, flamethrowers, etc. It's a 50/50 chance they'll destroy it or make it look really good
Generals, one of the most brutally underrated Strategy games ever that got killed by EA! God, I wish they were still making new versions of it. I miss it so much.

I have been playing this game since my childhood. I recommend "Command & Conquer: Generals Zero Hour The Last Stand" (the last stand is the name of a mode) if you are planning on playing in 2019. It is more modern and has new unit designs.
"Hey Matt, do you ever wonder why we're here, fighting for supplies and map control?" "Well, ya know those people back home, who have ridiculous amounts of money? More money than we could possibly spend in our lifetimes? Them folks, need MORE money, that's why we're here." "That is the stupidest thing... I have EVER heard! Hey Tank, why are we here?" "We fight for peace. Preserving freedom. Protecting our people. It's the right thing to do." "That's what I thought! Now, let's go liberate some oil wells!" This game feels like someone distilled the entire rhetoric of the Bush Administration and the War on Terror and packaged it into a game. 10/10, still playing it today.
I would recommend anyone to download the mods for CncG ZH, this makes both the peformance and graphics better (in some mods). Also it adds lots more to the game. Contra, Rise of the Reds and Shockwave is some good mods.

Install gentools to run it with higher resolution, change the aspect ratio and get change the camera hight further. Sure infantry models still look like arse if you zoom in on them but by and large everything looks great upscaled to 4k. Then you just need to pick your preferred mod pack, can't go wrong with rise of the reds
well, maybe you SHOULD Try Use ROTR Mod Too! It was made by the same studio but its just better and still doing updates ( there's mission, usable ships, russian, ECA(European Something , So Much New Vehicle. Gla Got New Superweapon)
@@techmasterpiece1847 ROTR needs a lot of work in my opinion with balancing. Plus those who aren't die hard fans of RTS games would get overwhelmed with the complexity of the mod. Though i will say that it is a fun mod to play...not as ECA though that one needs to be remodeled.

Zero Hour really brings Generals up to where it deserved to be. The General gameplay, and the dialog that goes with it, will keep you laughing, and playing many times over.
When I was a kid, I would play the game as a tower defense game, I would get on a map with as many allied enemies as possible, put them on medium, and just watch them repeatedly run into my turrets til I could bomb them from orbit
Same here. I picked the biggest maps to support the most enemies and would build giant bases until the computer lagged and just let them try to beat me. In the end it's like the AI would just give up and send the smallest units as fast as they could produce them into sure death. Sometimes I would add an ally or two to defend them from enemy as well.
What a great game! I still play it till today, even started casting replays and my own gameplay (I'm no pro). But it's just so unique and different to other RTS games I've played, one single unit micro'd and controlled to perfection can do some much more than just sending it randomly into battle.

God, I love how technicals are bouncing on the ground. Especially the one with the tyre on the front, it's the coolest model. I remember dreaming about having a toy c&c technical with bouncy suspension.

Generals in my opinion was the last C&C game with a truly memorable soundtrack. There have been few tracks here and there in C&C 3 & RA3, but I really can't say that I enjoy the soundtrack of those games as much as I enjoy Generals' which I still like to listen to to this day sometimes.

Mechanically, still my favorite RTS of all times despite not being a real C&C (of which Tiberian Dawn was the first PC game I ever bought). The balance and pacing is just perfect. I loved to play GLA online; sniping and taking over a Chinese dozer, then immediately ordering a Chinese CC built in the back of my base, finishing it with my workers whilst the dozer was blown up, and eventually rolling out overlord tanks out of my tunnel systems that infested the entire map caused quite some "CHEATER!!!" ragequits. Good times.
Forgot to mention the incredible level of micro the game allows for compared to other RTS. You can really outplay your opponents entire army with just 2 hummvees and an ambulance for example
My grandad use to play this game all the time, when ever I had sleep over at my grandparents house he let me play this and I loved it, watching this video brought me a lot of nostalgia.
There are TONNNNS of amazing mods for this game, like Shockwave, Contra 009, and Rise of the Reds. You need the Zero Hour expansion (included in the Origin version which is cheap). My favorite is Contra 009, which adds a huggee number of units, powers, superweapons, and UI improvements. Many mods completely change the generals you choose from and even add 3 additional generals. Should also the reviewer didn't mention the Generals Challenge mode in the Zero Hour expansion (no one plays the vanilla Generals, which the video somehow thinks matters). Challenge mode is what Generals should have been all along, they were just forced to release early. And frankly, most people don't play this game PvP. It's just not as fun that way. Play in Skirmish on a huge map versus several hard opponents, or play the Challenge mode, a pure blast. Anyway, long live generals, the best RTS ever made, and by far the best selling game in the entire C&C series!
@@Real_DMraider For me PvP in Generals was pure micromanagement. But I'm not super competitive. Also, against AI you get to set up kill spots to just chew through enemies. Either way, it's a BLAST!
In my personal GLA is the best faction Why? 1. requires no power 2. GLA hole 3. The unit it's absolutely cheap 4. Had a tons of upgrade 5. It's superior at mid/late game 6. You got money/weapon upgrade (for technical,quad cannon, and marauder tank) everytime when you destroyed enemy vehicle
Loved this game, it was so far ahead of it's time. The developers were apparently going to call the GLA Command Centre a Mosque but had to change it to Palace..
I would argue here that the art style of generals isnt as generic or uninspired as you say... but ofc this is subjective to everyone. Being a seperate CC series (set in different era) i find both unit design / textures / models being really matching to each nation and fitting to rest of the game assets (terrain, buildings). Yes they are simple in some sense (engine use just 1 albedo texture, no bumps or normal textures, each model around 100-200 polygons) but in my eyes very well made with bright colors and just enough details to give each unit a soul. Also the team color placement on different places of various units add to the great distinctive look. Also you are mentioning Company of Heroes regarding the stars/abilities... that game came 3 years after generals... Overall nice review! please keep classics comming :)

Dude, Generals is the best C&C game made to date. They left out the pointless story and made up for it with awesome gameplay. By far the best game. The fighters have advanced technology, but they aren’t aliens or in space or anything. It feels like a modern day army battle. Personally, that’s my favourite thing from a “command an army” game, to command an actual army. Grew up on this game and recently downloaded it again, definitely holds its own in 2019. 10/10 game
Playing on your friend's laptop for 30 mins? What a coincidence! I first saw this game on my uncle's laptop (in 2005 too!) and i was so impressed by the graphics at the time! I remember it was a USA mission (on the beach) and I fell in love with the Tomahawk immediately. I helped him clear that mission with nothing but Tomahawks lmao. And that was how I discovered the wonderful world of CnC!
i still remember those voice lines, and its been a long time since i've played this also i believe changing the resolution like that actually stretches the screen making everything look fatter than it should
What a game! Clever textures offset blocky graphics, great music, intuitive controls, interesting units and upgrades, and Zero Hour adds introduces asymmetrical specialties... this damn game kicks ass.

A LOT of people still play some of the older C&C titles like Generals, Red Alert 2 or Tib Wars. The games absolutely still hold up in 2019.

I never complained about missing any narrative driven campaings as this was my first entry to the series as a kid and for me this was the first and definitive C&C experience.

I have been playing this game since my childhood. I recommend "Command & Conquer: Generals Zero Hour The Last Stand" (the last stand is the name of a mode) if you are planning on playing in 2019. It is more modern and has new unit designs.

This game feels like someone distilled the entire rhetoric of the Bush Administration and the War on Terror and packaged it into a game. 10/10, still playing it today.
I would recommend anyone to download the mods for CncG ZH, this makes both the peformance and graphics better (in some mods). Also it adds lots more to the game. Contra, Rise of the Reds and Shockwave is some good mods.

Install gentools to run it with higher resolution, change the aspect ratio and get change the camera hight further. Sure infantry models still look like arse if you zoom in on them but by and large everything looks great upscaled to 4k. Then you just need to pick your preferred mod pack, can't go wrong with rise of the reds

@@techmasterpiece1847 ROTR needs a lot of work in my opinion with balancing. Plus those who aren't die hard fans of RTS games would get overwhelmed with the complexity of the mod. Though i will say that it is a fun mod to play...not as ECA though that one needs to be remodeled.

Zero Hour really brings Generals up to where it deserved to be. The General gameplay, and the dialog that goes with it, will keep you laughing, and playing many times over.
It did introduce balancing issues however particularly with patch 1.04
And that ex pack undercooked due to time-constraints. Imagine what would have happened if EA gave them enough time.
When I was a kid, I would play the game as a tower defense game, I would get on a map with as many allied enemies as possible, put them on medium, and just watch them repeatedly run into my turrets til I could bomb them from orbit
Same here. I picked the biggest maps to support the most enemies and would build giant bases until the computer lagged and just let them try to beat me. In the end it's like the AI would just give up and send the smallest units as fast as they could produce them into sure death. Sometimes I would add an ally or two to defend them from enemy as well.
What a great game! I still play it till today, even started casting replays and my own gameplay (I'm no pro).
But it's just so unique and different to other RTS games I've played, one single unit micro'd and controlled to perfection can do some much more than just sending it randomly into battle.

God, I love how technicals are bouncing on the ground. Especially the one with the tyre on the front, it's the coolest model. I remember dreaming about having a toy c&c technical with bouncy suspension.

Generals in my opinion was the last C&C game with a truly memorable soundtrack. There have been few tracks here and there in C&C 3 & RA3, but I really can't say that I enjoy the soundtrack of those games as much as I enjoy Generals' which I still like to listen to to this day sometimes.
The best track in RA3 is from previous games :P

"Going up" I absolutely love this game, to be honest it was the fairest of them all, this is all they needed, no need for lights from the sky ripping through bases etc. I wish they remake this as basic as generals was, it was a strategy that gave you the edge.

Mechanically, still my favorite RTS of all times despite not being a real C&C (of which Tiberian Dawn was the first PC game I ever bought). The balance and pacing is just perfect. I loved to play GLA online; sniping and taking over a Chinese dozer, then immediately ordering a Chinese CC built in the back of my base, finishing it with my workers whilst the dozer was blown up, and eventually rolling out overlord tanks out of my tunnel systems that infested the entire map caused quite some "CHEATER!!!" ragequits. Good times.

Forgot to mention the incredible level of micro the game allows for compared to other RTS.
You can really outplay your opponents entire army with just 2 hummvees and an ambulance for example
My grandad use to play this game all the time, when ever I had sleep over at my grandparents house he let me play this and I loved it, watching this video brought me a lot of nostalgia.

There are TONNNNS of amazing mods for this game, like Shockwave, Contra 009, and Rise of the Reds. You need the Zero Hour expansion (included in the Origin version which is cheap). My favorite is Contra 009, which adds a huggee number of units, powers, superweapons, and UI improvements. Many mods completely change the generals you choose from and even add 3 additional generals.
Should also the reviewer didn't mention the Generals Challenge mode in the Zero Hour expansion (no one plays the vanilla Generals, which the video somehow thinks matters). Challenge mode is what Generals should have been all along, they were just forced to release early.
And frankly, most people don't play this game PvP. It's just not as fun that way. Play in Skirmish on a huge map versus several hard opponents, or play the Challenge mode, a pure blast.
Anyway, long live generals, the best RTS ever made, and by far the best selling game in the entire C&C series!

@@Real_DMraider For me PvP in Generals was pure micromanagement. But I'm not super competitive. Also, against AI you get to set up kill spots to just chew through enemies. Either way, it's a BLAST!
In my personal GLA is the best faction
Why?
1. requires no power
2. GLA hole
3. The unit it's absolutely cheap
4. Had a tons of upgrade
5. It's superior at mid/late game
6. You got money/weapon upgrade (for technical,quad cannon, and marauder tank) everytime when you destroyed enemy vehicle
Plus if I remember correctly Gla Snipers can steal the other fractions vehicles

The developers were apparently going to call the GLA Command Centre a Mosque but had to change it to Palace..
I would argue here that the art style of generals isnt as generic or uninspired as you say... but ofc this is subjective to everyone. Being a seperate CC series (set in different era) i find both unit design / textures / models being really matching to each nation and fitting to rest of the game assets (terrain, buildings). Yes they are simple in some sense (engine use just 1 albedo texture, no bumps or normal textures, each model around 100-200 polygons) but in my eyes very well made with bright colors and just enough details to give each unit a soul. Also the team color placement on different places of various units add to the great distinctive look.
Also you are mentioning Company of Heroes regarding the stars/abilities... that game came 3 years after generals...

Dude, Generals is the best C&C game made to date. They left out the pointless story and made up for it with awesome gameplay. By far the best game. The fighters have advanced technology, but they aren’t aliens or in space or anything. It feels like a modern day army battle. Personally, that’s my favourite thing from a “command an army” game, to command an actual army. Grew up on this game and recently downloaded it again, definitely holds its own in 2019. 10/10 game
Playing on your friend's laptop for 30 mins? What a coincidence! I first saw this game on my uncle's laptop (in 2005 too!) and i was so impressed by the graphics at the time! I remember it was a USA mission (on the beach) and I fell in love with the Tomahawk immediately. I helped him clear that mission with nothing but Tomahawks lmao. And that was how I discovered the wonderful world of CnC!

What a game! Clever textures offset blocky graphics, great music, intuitive controls, interesting units and upgrades, and Zero Hour adds introduces asymmetrical specialties... this damn game kicks ass.
