Can't think of one that was a eureka moment personally, but here are some random tips with varying levels of usefulness xD 1) Iroquois ambush using a patriot/general unit doesn't work in the Extended Edition. 2) Deleting a unit that is being hit by an Aztec unit still yields plunder even when deleted. 3) Persians receive free taxation when the temple is complete. 4) You can 2 merchants using 1 rare for double income from that rare resource (although this is highly frowned upon in competitive matches). 5) Having multiple libraries allows you to research library technologies at the same time. Rise if Nations will always be a part of my childhood. One of my best memories and having one of the most mind blowing graphics for those times in rts genre.
this game was my childhood and one of the very first pc games i played when I was young, came back to play this game again after all these years, thanks man!
Man, took me down memory lane big time. I haven’t played since June 2006 and it’s 2024. Almost 18 years!!! We use to be about 6 college friends who played against each other over LAN. Let me tell you it was brutal. We formed fake alliances, broke them at will and fought bloody battles in every corner. It was a proper war zone. The deceptions, the pretenses, the demand of resources to postpone the inevitable war, the destruction, the sound of an attack in a city where you had zero soldiers, the nukes. It was something else. As I recall one of my friends , Albert was the best player. But the madness meant it was never easy to tell who would be the last man standing. But he usually came out on top, though always almost out of resources. 😅 Oh my days! Thanks for these memories. I’ll be playing one of these days but I’ll miss my friends. 😢 No two ways about that. Great content!
Hey, great video! One thing regarding the temple tip is that usually unless it's placed in front of an enemy city, (and as a result making it harder for your units to capture the city itself) it's best to not waste time sieging it down because the enemy can just rebuild it and regain hit points on the city. In fact this is one strategy I sometimes employ when I'm in games such as nomad. once the enemy has reduced the city, and starts sieging down the towers behind my city, I rebuild my temple and also research religion and the second lumber mill upgrade to further increase the city's hit points. I then garrison some units inside the repaired city, and proceed to focus fire the city to attack the siege units that moved forward to target my towers behind the city. Generals are also useful, just in case you're in the heat of battle and your patriot gets killed in action, it's nice to have a backup general so that you don't lose the armour. It's also useful if your patriot runs out of craft, and you need to retreat your units away you can still use your backup general for a hasty forced march. They're also nice for raiding parties as those units will have armour whilst they do their annoying raids :)
That's awesome, thanks IG! Any insight from more experienced players is always welcome, hopefully people check out the commends section to see this :) Also, that's damn sneaky with the Temple lure haha
Great video! Also press q to infinite que (if you have the resources, example: at the early game workers are very much needed but it's impractical to train a lot of em at a time, so having sufficient farms and just infinite que them so that you don't have always click on the town centre all the time!)
One more I'd like to add is once your able to build a tower build one asap (preferred at solid defense location to protect from early invades)so u can research allegiance so u can start doing attrition damage to unwelcome enemy unit that aren't yet being protected by a storage wagon in your territory.
Good tips, I never was good at placing temples until now but scouts/special forces are very important too. They can make it much easier to get hidden resources early in the game, spot hidden units, stop spies from bribing, snipe certain units like generals in a battle, destroy other buildings, no attrition so you can scout the map easier and so on. Keep at least two in each of your armies
@1lsgaming27 Spies and Special Forces is such a great battle in the middle of the overall battle. I find it stressful but pulling off a bribe or sniping a general is great fun!

Cheers Josh! That sounds like a beast of a combination I'm going to give that one a go myself! Hopefully some new players read the comment and give it a go too, thanks for sharing :)
@@twiglets2 The other thing I used to do is, as soon as I basically leveled a city and captured it, even before repairing the city or building anything else I would get a temple up. They build very fast and give an instant shot of HP to the city.
Incidentally Wiki Fandom has this to say about rallying to Patriots or other units: "Note that created/evacuated units will actually move to the target unit's position, not to the unit itself. So moving the target unit to a different location won't send created/evacuated units currently on their way automatically to the new position." In my last game had to direct these "errant" units manually, but that's cool.
Hi Jon, yes a very important point you raise there. It's frustrating, and I'm not personally aware of a way around it. I do think setting the rally point to the Patriot (or a similar unit) is still advantageous, even if you have to do some manual redirecting, but it would come as a nasty surprise if you weren't aware of this specific mechanic!

Something forts and temples help a lot with is expanding your territory. Having more territory as soon as posible allows you to better secure resources, have more options for city and building placement, gives you more income from the temples tax technology, and provides more area to better defend your cities with attrition damage, or to get closer to the enemy before an attack. A tactic I liked to use back in the day is to pick Russia and use every attrition and territory boosting building and tech available. Whenever the enemy entered my territory they essentially melted down from the attrition damage. If they brought supplies or a general, a small force of cavalry could swoop in and kill them before retreating, costing a minimum of resources to defend.
@BVasquezp That is the part I always struggled with. I naturally like to turtle in RTS games but in RoN you have to expand, but it makes you feel so vulnerable! I guess it's why it's such a great game, it pushes you to expand. I haven't tried it myself but I've seen many players beating the hardest ai by using the Russians and their ridiculous attrition. Very fun to watch!
This was super helpful. Coming from AoE IV, it seems very similar. I just wish there was a more up to date version of the game with current graphics. The Extended Edition feels very badly done in terms of the overhaul they apparently did to the original.
You're welcome I'm glad it helped! The game is starting to show it's age unfortunately, especially if you're coming from a pretty game like AoE IV. Maybe a newer version will come along in the end, we can only hope!
Excellent content, could you make a guide on how to micromanage army combats? I never know the units are focusing on the units that are weaker for their type.
For little me, a big discovery was turning on "advanced features" on my units by accident and setting my homeguards to "defensive" so they dont 't run off into enemy territory, because they'd either aggro a hornet nest or die of attrition.
Cheers Brando glad you found it useful. I was considering doing another with some more tips along the same lines, would that interest you too? Hope you're enjoying the game!
Dunno if this is the right place to ask but just came across this quote relevant to Wiki Fandom's info about East Indies maps: "You can prevent land units from auto-embarking by turning off Auto-Transport, either by pressing the "ship" button or using the hotkey T." The obvious question is, how would you transport them if you turn if off? Thanks for your kind attention and great viddies.
I "think" the answer is that you can't transport them without auto transport. There is perhaps a specific button so you can decide when a unit enters the sea as a ship, as opposed to the game doing it for you as soon as they're directed onto the water. I personally can't think of a circumstance where you would want to turn off Auto-Transport. Unless you had a large army and knew for certain you didn't want them to go into the water (where they are particularly easy to kill), so to prevent accidental embarkment it may be useful to switch off. Perhaps there are players out there that will prove me wrong, and say there are very good tactical reasons to turn it off!
@@twiglets2 Uh, yeah. Had a demoralizing loss on an East Indies map the other day (still playing on Moderate difficulty). With the map being split up into so many separate islands it's easy to have units effectively "marooned" by marauding enemy ships. Since going into the water under those circumstances (and I lost a Patriot plus numerous other temporarily amphib units) is suicide it might be useful to turn it off IF it also prevents the opponent from embarking and using the seas as invasion highways. If not, then what's the point?
@@JonathanSaxon I don't know the detail but it seems an interesting decision to create Rise of Legends rather than Rise of Nations 2. Perhaps it was the wrong one!

I have no idea why, but my cities sometimes do not have rally points for resource gathering? (i havent tried hotkey when that happens). Is there a game setting which affects that?
On the version of RONs that I'm playing, citizens automatically go toward whatever mine, farm, logging camp etc that may have a manpower shortage. Pretty handy. Wish there was a way to find idle citizens tho. So i could get them working on projects...
i was doing it all wrong lol. I would just pile up 100s in army and then just rush on city by city and meanwhile they fight and die. create another army as reinforcements.

Just found your content today bro! Love it! Keep it up!
Yo the tab hot key is the goat also river units is very interesting, thx alot
@taggalongg8539 Tab is a life changer, you're welcome!
Your tips actually make me a returning player 😆
"Wolves are attacking my lord"
I still play this game. It's so many years now.
@danup11 it's the game that keeps on giving! Do you have a preferred Nation?
@@twiglets2 Obviously India
@@twiglets2 But how to cross the oceans quickly ? I didn't understood.
Thank you. I love this game.
My pleasure, I hope you found it useful! Have you played online or do you prefer against the ai?
Really hope we get a remaster of Rise of Legends
I've heard good thing of rise of legends but never tried it myself. Do you think it's aged well and worth a try these days?
@@twiglets2 its quite unique. The three factions are quite cool.
@@JonathanSaxon It looks like a decent game, I'm surprised it wasn't more popular
@@twiglets2 This is just my opinion, but I think it was because the RoN players just wanted Rise of Nations 2. Not enough RoN players bought the game.
@@JonathanSaxon I don't know the detail but it seems an interesting decision to create Rise of Legends rather than Rise of Nations 2. Perhaps it was the wrong one!
My favorite 2 civs were the Egyptians and Chinese. Fire Lancers have the coolest animations and leave charred corpses everywhere. Egyptians being able to rush The Terracotta Army and The Colossus was the best!
@AaronBeSpeedy One of my favourite things about the game is that there are so many civs and everyone has different favorites. It just shows how well designed everything was!
I remember playing this game on my grandma's computer after school while I waited for my mom to pick me up when she was done with work. If they ever remake this like Age of Mythology I will drop however much it is. Just like Mythology I'd drop the extra 40 bucks just for the future DLC.
@@harramodamonster7021 same!
Rally point as a unit was the most shocking one!
@sam7181 So useful right?!
This Rise Of Nations video sounds like it has Stronghold Crusader's music playing in the back ground :P
I got the game like 2 days ago and already have 30 hours in it lol
only at the first tip so far and I can't wait to play again and start pressing tab
pls upload a video with tips on how to cure this addiction
That river information really new to me
If you hover your mouse over rivers it tells you so.
Very informative ❤
i usually go straight for the military buildings but didn't know temples gotta go
I have no idea why, but my cities sometimes do not have rally points for resource gathering? (i havent tried hotkey when that happens). Is there a game setting which affects that?
Thank you sir! my wife has been kicking my ass i'm very rusty
Rally points can be done with right click if I remember right
On the version of RONs that I'm playing, citizens automatically go toward whatever mine, farm, logging camp etc that may have a manpower shortage. Pretty handy. Wish there was a way to find idle citizens tho. So i could get them working on projects...
I think the idle villager and army button somewhere at the bottom right corner above the map
@@mignonne_ you're right. Found the button. Thanks!
@@robzilla730 ♥️
i was doing it all wrong lol. I would just pile up 100s in army and then just rush on city by city and meanwhile they fight and die. create another army as reinforcements.
Garrison archers inside the forts/towers/cities they will attack from these buildings.
Me and my friends still play this game with fair regularity. Truly is one of the greatest games ever made. I'd love a remaster with better AI that doesn't have to rely on outright cheating to be difficult.
@@Dizzeke we can dream my friend. Glad to hear you're still playing occasionally!
Good luck. The creator was a genius who also made Civilization 2 and Alpha Centauri. He thus made the greatest PC games of all time. But then he made farmville and now never has to work another day in his life.
I never knew about half of these tips, thank yee
No problem my friend, I hope they're useful.
Out of interest, which nation/s are you preferring to play as at the moment?
@@twiglets2 The Dutch are my favorite atm but i also like Russia's territory grab, wbu ?
@@joelharding3312 Dutch are awesome, they are so strong it almost feels like cheating haha I really enjoy Bantu and British mostly but then again I do love the elephants so anyone that has elephants is fun for me!
Good video!
Thank you!
I've been playing this game on and off for almost 20 years, and I still can't overcome toughest AI. I've gotten very close, but it always just escapes me
@@TheGamingDefinition same, there are some players that make it look easy, so it is possible, but other than attacking them super early I can't do it myself!
Thanx mate... Lots of helpful tips! I remember playing this game back in days when it got released and I got sucked in! Never went after cheats or walkthrough though! i just enjoyed the game as I played! Recently I discovered there are a lot out there than I realized... Wow! The game just got redefined for me!
I was exactly the same! Me and a buddy would just play on the same team having a laugh then I'd turn on him and nuke him every game. Now I've rediscovered it I realise how much depth there is. The online multiplayer is still pretty decent too! Hope you're enjoying it again bud
@@twiglets2 Honestly, I am enjoying this nostalgic game more than I thought I would! And I have never tried Multiplayer before but will do this time for sure. Though I still find it difficult to beat computer in Tougher settings. And toughest is yet to defeat! So, for me it's now practice , practice, practice bud. I just had a dream start in another death match 😘👌 Relic, Peacock, Silver AND Marble as starting ruins! Wish me luck.
Best of luck my friend! Those tough and tougher ai's are bastards but you'll get there! I've got a video on how to take down a toughest ai if that helps. th-cam.com/video/bpc9NzWqH0o/w-d-xo.html It's a bit of a cheese taking advantage of their programming to an extent but it should work - enjoy!
Wow this is very helpful 👍
Thanks very useful!
You're welcome!
Rise of nations is the best, still listen to the soundtrack everyday
It's an excellent soundtrack!
im lookin for the hotkey to make groups in den infatery so i can select with hot keys the "batallion" "fregatte" and others but i cant found anything?
Edit: i found it in part 2 thx!
I just startng playing the game it is fun but the nukes and bombers plane are annoying to deal with
@@Grim_reaper7896 the nukes can be fun for a time but a bit stupid to play against. Have you tried restricting the age you play in so that bombers and nukes are not available? I think it's possible to switch off nukes too
@@twiglets2 ok
Thank for the tips!!!
I hope they are useful!

How do I stop or recede unrest?
Played this game since 2005, and I just came back to it. Great tips, almost half of these were new to me. Do you usually play multiplayer or single player?
I must admit I haven't played for a while, I would usually play singleplayer or a couple of old school buddies will play vs the ai with me. Online against real humans is far too stressful for me!
What about yourself? Did something happen to bring you back to the game after all this time?
@@twiglets2 yeah exactly the same, playing vs humans is just not for me, they play at a high pace.
I come to play this game every 1-2 years, there is just something special about it. Every soundtrack is phenomenal, the mechanics and visuals in this game is amazing and the fact that you can play skirmish mode and make your own rules and play at your own pace is something that no other game has nowadays... That's why I come back to it, it's the best RTS of all-time, if not - the BEST strategy game generally.
Is there a stream of your rise of Nations
Any other tips for invading a city ?
Hey do you know how to play this game nowadays online with friends, or even Lan?, I can't seem to find the option on RoN Extended Edition
The only way I'm aware of is to purchase the extended edition on steam (I think you can buy four copies with a discount too) and that has steam integration so you can play with friends or with/against randoms in a lobby.
@@twiglets2 for some reason the invite friends button is not working :/. Thanks though!
@@franciscojoseolivero3409 I remember it being difficult. I think you invite them via Steam, but then you need to go into Rise of Nations and you will see another button there to invite them. Or something along those lines, sorry, it's been a while!
@@twiglets2 figured it out! For anyone having this issue. Just rollback to beta 1.0 (under library on steam, right click -> properties and over there change to version 1.0) then the lan and direct iNet connection options will show under multiplayer. Just played a game using your tips against my older brother hahah
@@franciscojoseolivero3409 Amazing, thanks for letting us know, I'm sure other players will find that useful. Hope you guys enjoy the game!
I cant capture shit, I keep launching nukes and then sending an army but the ai manages to keep creating enemies
is the nuke just a gimmick or something?
since my population is already at limit I cant send too much ppl otherwise I will be completely unprotected against the other ai (me agasint 2)
first time playing, and yeah I suck
How u creat rally point on senator can u explain please?
If you select a unit production building and then right click on your senator (or any unit I believe) it creates a rally point that follows the senator to an extent.
@@twiglets2 tnx for reply man

thanks a lot
@bamibrick6575 No problem, hope it was useful!
Can you online multiplayer with friends ? 😊
@EduardoGac yes you can! It's easiest through steam but I believe game ranger also works
I like your musical taste! What is the first album on the left ?
Thank you! In this video it's Origin of Symmetry by a band called Muse - a very good album! I change them round sometimes to see if anybody notices haha
how to be lazy. but seriously these are actually good tips on the game.
Can I play online with frends and how?
@user-my2ng7qm4k the easiest way is to purchase the game through Steam :)
Tip number 1 should be: subscribe to Rise of Patience lol
Of course, especially with the ongoing MoR tournament. I saw a certain red colored wizard pull off a sickeningly quick colossus.
Hi
Where can I download this game for free 😬
just buy the game lol
HI, bro, I love this game so much for the past 10 years I am playing this whenever I have time, I and my friend from steam got the game and play it every Saturday night and whenever we have time. I am getting waiting on my friend and snail on the friend's name and sometimes it's saying he dropped the game, do the game servers fine to play in 2021 because our net speeds are 100mbps and i play warzone fine. If you have a team of the group who play me and my friend love to join and have fun. add me in steam and I will be joining when every possible.
