The ADSB receiver is a great thing and will help with situational awareness while flying in and around cities with a large airport, but if you’re flying in rural areas there can be lots of manned aircraft that are not equipped with ADSB. Manned aircraft are only required to have an ADSB transmitter installed if they operate in class A, B, and C airspace. Aircraft that are commonly found flying low such as crop dusters aren’t very likely to be equipped so you won’t be able to use the warnings on the app.

I am new to drones, just purchased a Mavic Air 2. I was under the impression that planes were required to fly above 500 foot. My Air 2 had a default of 492 Ft altitude setting.. I live about 25 air miles from Philly International airport (my best guess) and I get several manned aircraft warnings every time I fly my drone. Of course a plane would descend under 500 feet on approach to land but I assumed they remain above 500ft any other time. Am I wrong about that? That footage of the bridge is really neat. Were you on the Camden waterfront to get that footage? One area I think would be cool to get footage is Riverwinds in West Deptford. I see the blocked off "no fly" areas on the map but it looks like Riverwinds would still be ok, outside of the red blocked area. Also, how far have you flown your drone? I watched a video where a guy flew his 5 miles in Hawaii but there was no tall trees and it was a wilderness area and appeared to have no interference. Mavic claims 10km. I've had mine a mile and even then I begin to get nervous LOL.
Please take a look a the missing features, features that the first Air had that have been removed, such as Cinematic Mode (I loved this for creating smooth turns) and the loss of the additional controller trigger button (I loved this for changing exposure compensation on the fly).
Hi, what a great explanation of air sense of DJI Mavic Air 2! I am just wondering why I dont have this warning on my dji mavic air 2. What version of app and firmware are your running of? Thanks! 👍

Like yourself ,used flight radar 24 for many years now , and also have ground to air radio to transmit my position ,direction and height .That is due to low flying aircraft along beaches I patrol. Mavic Enterprise has all air sense receivers. I agree an ability to see other aircrafts height would be invaluable.
Hi I have been watching you for a bit. In 2017, I bought a p4p. Never crashed it. Put it away some time back, due to total frustration, with the drone. On my third p4p, due to one problem or another. Thinking of giving it another try. With the air 2 s, Has DJI got the bugs worked out? Also was thinking of the smart controller. What are your thoughts. Thank you.
Does the drone freeze when the airsense warning happens? I’ve read multiple comments where people complain of this happening and then it happened to me tonight. Was close to home, so I hit the RTH button. Nothing at all happened. The drone stayed put. Then I canceled and tried to lower it on my own. Again nothing happened. Has anyone else encountered this?
Thanks for explaining how ADS-B works. I've been hearing a lot about this technology lately, but had no idea how it worked. I have the Mavic Air 2, so I can't wait to get my first alert that a plane is flying overhead and close by.
I’m all for it! So many times I have herd aircraft flying close enough to hear it but times not seeing the location so I’ll drop down and head home. Air sense is a step up for suas, leading us to bigger and better things to come in the future to help us and others stay safe in the skies. As you said it needs to have more information as to where the aircraft is located! Great job as always and keep up the great information station!
I have a question for you, but it's not about the video you posted. Can you use the smart remote with the Mavic air 2 and if so how do you link them together?
I think DJI's Airsense (aka ADS-B receiver aka or Automatic Dependence Surveillance - Broadcast IN ) is a great feature but it really does need to give you at minimum the altitude of the aircraft to truly be useful. The good news is that a ADS-B OUT broadcast signal does include an aircraft's identification, current position, altitude and velocity. Hopefully DJI will make all or most of this info easily available in the App in the future. Just curious .....Is there any way to turn off this feature. I'm assuming it consumes some battery life.
I use airsense but it does not give me the manned aircraft's altitude. You probably know how congested the airspace near Philadelphia can be. When PHL uses runway 27 for landings, aircraft from all directions turning from base to their final are typically showing their altitude at around 2800-3000 msl. Most of the time they are north or south of my location but sometimes they seem to go over my head. Airsense shows them, turns yellow, turns red, gives an audible warning but doesn't give me the altitude. Maybe I don't have it setup correctly. Lately when PHL is using runway 27 I use the smart controller so I can run Flight Radar 24 on my phone. Flight Radar 24 is a free app that gives the location of aircraft and their altitude. It's especially helpful with helicopters. One little fire and they come buzzing in from everywhere. My point, if airsense doesn't show the altitude now it would be a big help if it did in the future. Flight Radar 24 doesn't catch everything (I'm not sure if ADS-B IS required for military at this time) but most aircraft are suppose to have ADS-B when flying in most controlled airspace.
Hey Great video by the way, you always explain everything well. I have the Mavic 3 and my airsense stop working after the January update. I’ve reached out to DJI and keep getting the runaround. Would you know if anyone else is experiencing the same and does yours still work. Thank you
Love your content. Quick question. If you take off from a "normal zone" but fly into a blue zone does it automatically stop you and ask you for authorization or only when you take off from a blue zone?
Just to be more precise, Flightradar24 only show airplanes with ADS-B and not transponder Mode S. So private aircraft or chopper will not be seen with this app. Don't know if Mavic air sense does...should be interesting because don't need to know if a liner at level 200 is next to me but a small one at same altitude as my drone will be interesting.
Note about flightradar24 for years to.. But it would still help even though you have airsense.. Once you see the manned aircraft on your screen. have flightradar24 running switch over to it and see the altitude.
Not all planes are required to be equipped with an adsb transmitter. If planes don't operate out of large airports things like cessnas flying out of local airstrips wont populate since their owners are unlikely to spend the $$ if they arent required to use the system. #2 manned aircraft are supposed to stay above 400' agl (our legal limit) unless on approach to landing. Of course near where i am a month ago a plane came through our neighborhood buzzing our houses at 200 feet so...
Very cool video! I live near an Air Force flight test facility and a private airfield, so this feature will be VERY useful for me. I still couldn't find a way to modify the responsiveness of the controls on the remote, for flying the drone, or for controlling the camera gimbals. Any luck with either of those?
For drones without ADS-B receiver, why not to integrate informations into DJI Fly ou DJI Go like into FlightRadar24? OK it would need an Internet connection, but better than nothing !
There's a significant delay to when FR/FA reports aircraft, sometimes as much as 5 minutes. Also they don't appear to catch all MAS. I'm not sure if that's because the missing MAS don't have ADS-B transmitters or a fault of how FR/FA capture their information.
Great video! It's very useful for deaf pilots. Sometimes I hear helicopters with a hearing aid when they come closer but I don't know where exactly they're nearby.
I agree with your assessment of AirSense Billy. As you stated AirSense is in its infancy as aircraft altitude, type, and speed are not indicated on the map. I would hope that future software updates would have that information available on the map as that information could easily be added to the data stream from the manned aircraft. My Mavic Air 2 Fly more combo is scheduled to be delivered next week, I am still awaiting the delivery of my Autel Evo II 8K Rugged bundle. The obvious unfortunate aspect of AirSense is that it is an in drone technology and cannot be added aftermarket.I am unsure as to why the Autel Evo II drones do not have AirSense,I know they said a CES they were 'monitoring the development and implementation of AirSense".
Okay woahhh...I've been researching everything drone for weeks getting ready to pull the trigger on buying a Mavic Air 2. Sorry to be off subject here but I've just stumbled upon that my Android phone can't get the DJI Fly app? Thank god I didn't buy an $800 paperweight. I'm not liking having to buy an iPhone just for an app. That's absurd. Can anyone share some insight on what's going on?
I was in the same position but picked up a cheap LG G6 on Amazon for $120. Turns out, that phone is fussy. Had to do all sorts of USB debugging, but got it to actually work for my 2nd flight (borrowed an S8 for 1st flight, no probs). Even so, the app froze for about 30 seconds part way through when switching modes. If I had to do it again, I would pick up either a Samsung S6 or S7 instead. Not ideal, but beats the more expensive options and has allowed me to try out this really good drone.
It's the other way around actually. On Android, nothing is a problem as it is an open source. However, you might have to allow to download 3 party apps on, and open up your hidden settings on your phone. Tapping build number 7 times in information about your phone usually does it. I have all sorts of apps that Play Store don't have, because reasons 😂
Air Sense works great. It went off on Mavic Air 2 while I was inputing the camera settings. I live by an Airport and the warning was quite clear on the remote and the location of the other aircraft showed on the map, then I heard it fly over. Very nice!
The whole point of having ADS-B, is to allow you to know the location, altitude and speed of the other aircraft. I'm surprised it does not include it. Perhaps in a later software update. That would be very useful. BTW, I purchased one , and waiting for it.
Thanks, that's really cool. I saw the label on the side of my drone and didn't know what it was. Also, that app is really cool thanks for mentioning it!
Thanks Billie. Not convinced we need to know the type of aircraft, it really matters not. Altitude is a different matter and yes knowing that would be a real safety addition.
Keep in mind that not all manned aircraft have ADSB. The guy that runs the airport in my town doesn't have it in his single engine plane b/c it costs $1200 to add it to his old bird. This is a great feature. It's a great safety feature but not the whole package. For aircraft equipped with ADSB typically the alarm goes off 10-15 seconds before I see or hear anything... That's a generous warning period, and gets my attention away from framing a shot.
GREAT VIDEO DUDE! Very nice feature! Have you seen this on any other DJI drones? Air2S? Im sure it has it but wondering if its upgraded any. I live just outside class D and see aircraft on my MA2 screen often! Not seen any helicopters though. But they are almost as many fly nearby. Wondering why they dont have it onboard. Either off or to low to detect them. I hear them often but never close. But honestly they need it more than planes! Low and come in so quick very little time to respond! Also i believe it can detect the size of aircraft. Once it was a big jet it detected over 10 miles away! ( I had to get on another map to measure the distance later. ) But it showed up as a larger icon if i remember correctly. I wish i was screen recording at the time but wasnt.
In my opinion I think this is a great addition to DJI drones. One of my biggest fears when flying drone is other nearby manned aircraft. You did a great job of explaining this. Will be interesting to see what types of updates they make to ads-b in the coming months/years. Excited for any update videos you create!
My MA2 should arrive this thursday. Its like waiting on xmas for me. I been waiting since april 27th. I already requested flight time on May 21st for my area in Delco. I'm from Philly, born and raised. Keep up the great videos, its much appreciated.
This system seems to make a lot more sense than remote ID. This actually provides a function as a safety system. Remote ID just makes everything about having a drone difficult but at the same time nothing is safer than it is right now.
This is totally off the subject of this video but I'm trying to find out why my Mavic Air 2 fly more combo came with all three batteries with the embossed DJI logo painted white like the controller. I've seen no others like mine. Even the box mine came in shows the grey battery logos. But then I watched your video and although your batteries are like everyone else's I've seen, the fly more combo box you show at 0:50 shows the painted white logos on the batteries like mine. I know it affects absolutely nothing but my sanity but I'm wondering why mine are the only ones I've seen this way. BTW, I ordered my MA2 fly more combo directly from the DJI website about an hour after launch and it arrived on the 13th of May. Anywho, tangent over. Keep up the great videos Billy and if anyone else out there gets the batteries with the white DJI logo, please let me know. I'm super curious how isolated this is. Thanks!
@@brendalg4 I thought that but then noticed all of the review units that were sent out a month ago in every early TH-cam video were grey. Then I thought maybe it was the ADS-B versions but Billy's video debunked that too.
@@PalmettoMoon thank you, that makes me feel a little better but why are they different? Does your box show the grey batteries on it or is it like the box in this video?
@@xplmr1 The picture on my box is kind of what you would call a matte finish photo. It doesn't show glossy high details. But,from my best guess of the pic on my box it shows grey batteries, not white logos on them. All three of my actual batteries have white dji logos on them. The box picture may just be an early picture they took of the combo before putting it out to the public (an older photo).
I think I would see a dc10 if it was flying below 400 feet in the vicinity of my Mavic being flown legally, as previous comments it’s the light aircraft not having this technology that will be the problem. Regarding awareness of other aircrafts height, if it’s at 20000 feet or 30000 feet don’t think it will make much difference
Here in the land down under no air sense for us ! I guess were not required by law, personally this being my first drone i couldn't care less, just fly it, shoot with it and have some fun, one less thing i need to be concerned with and if i takeout a plane then thats just too bad
Very nice explained. short exact and understandable without overestimated intro, mentioning 100 times to subscribe and all this stuff, like seen on other channels. Great work.
Is there anything on how remote ID would affect the air 2? Airsense is a great feature but I wish I would show the altitude like others have mentioned. And great video, keep up the good work.
I do like DJI tech, but NOT enough to actually buy them. Why? ONLY because of their geofencing. When its critical to fly, I don't need DJI in China telling me I can't, or that I have to do an update. If it weren't for this one thing, I would fly DJI, but instead I fly Autel Evo. No geofencing and no update restrictions either. As for the ADS-B, I fly general aviation aircraft and use ADS-B all the time. When drones have ADS-B out, that will be THE gamechanger in drone tech.
Great informative video. I am really liking your content! This is a great feature. I have also been flying and heard a plane coming but not sure where it was headed. Will be very glad to see this information. I am going to be in the market for a new drone soon and like the Mavic Air 2 but not sure if this will be the one I choose. As soon as everything opens up here in Michigan I am going to test for my part 107 license. Because I will be able to fly commercially, I am torn between the Air 2, Mavic Pro and the Phantom 4 Pro 2. Does anyone have any recommendations for something that I will fly recreationally and commercially? Would the Mavic Pro 2 work? Thank you.
Informative video, but knowing the altitude of the manned aircraft would be helpful. I drop altitude, & never loss line of sight of my drone. Know where your flying at all times.
Thanks billy as usual a really well put together video. The bummer is I am in Europe and that doesn’t have it. Thanks DJI. I feel so much safer not having this on the drone NOT.
I honestly could use this on my mav 2. Where I live in WV the military does training and flight hours over my area. And..... they fly LOWWWW! Today I had a C-130 go by me through the valley and he was lower then the mountain tops. When you can wave at the pilots and they wave back then they are just way too low. The big C-130s are really sneaky too! You can’t hear them till you see them coming down the valley toward you! Thanks for the explanation. Cool cool
Do you have any tips on how to fly near a military base? I am in a blue area. Kitty Hawk says laanc not available.... but it also says permissible altitude for authorization 400 ft.
The ADSB receiver is a great thing and will help with situational awareness while flying in and around cities with a large airport, but if you’re flying in rural areas there can be lots of manned aircraft that are not equipped with ADSB. Well that explains why planes seemingly flying low over my house towards the nearby class-D airport tend to not show up in FlightRadar or FlightAware.
A coast guard helicopter flying over the beach at around 100 ft was not picked up.
deezyD93 Military aircraft (including the USCG) do not show up on consumer ADS-B applications for security reasons
@@diegol.5619
Didn't know that.
Personally I love it, but as you said I would like to know the altitude of the man air craft so I know how to adjust my fly accordingly.
They need to add that info

WHAT DOES THE B - STAND FOR ADS - B ?
I had been curious if there was a transmitter, I didn't think so, but I'm glad to know that for certain.
Is the adsb works with your phone completely in airplane mode?
Would be great if you could compare Flightradar24 and Airsense to determine the latency between the two.
Is the air sense audio warning in Chinese for you? If so do you know how to change it to English?
Does airsence come along with all MA2? I live in Canada. I heard only for u.s not for Canada.

You will be able to in a future update.
Agreed, I just hope they don't turn this into something that we DON'T want
@@billykyle Meaning? Something that supports RemoteID?
Sounds like you want an MCAS system on your hobby drone. A feature almost exclusive to larger commercial aircraft.
Can it detect un-manned aircrafts like other drones?
Hey Great video by the way, you always explain everything well. I have the Mavic 3 and my airsense stop working after the January update. I’ve reached out to DJI and keep getting the runaround. Would you know if anyone else is experiencing the same and does yours still work. Thank you
Does airsense needs WIFI connection from the cellphone?
I really hope they add those features soon. They are a MUST have
Thank you so much, this helped so much!!!!
Last year Dji shared a video about Airsense. They said everybody will see the drones. But you said this only have reciver. Is not that strange?
No where in the video they released did it say the drone would be transmitting a signal.
@@billykyle The old women wonder the drone and opening mobile app and see who is flying on her house. I saw that in Airsense first video 😀
Bought a mavic mini last week. Just ordered a mavic air 2. My body is ready
Every drone should have this feature. Thanks for the video!
Hi ! How to check Original or Fake? Please help me to find it.... Coz I'm going to buy this Drone on next week. Thanks.
My question is how close are they from my drone? Is it like a mile away difference?
What?
Have Mavic Pro 2 and my Air 2 is still in the box. Good info, thanks!
Couldn’t agree more! It’s hard for anyone to hear exactly where a manned aircraft is
@@billykyle Yup, that makes me nervous when I spotted a helicopter flying almost toward in my drone's way and I suddenly descended it. 😬
I wonder if the hardware is in place to accommodate a software update including some form of AirSense-like feature on the EVO II
You need a different Android phone. It works on my Samsung S7
@@brendalg4 Looks like I may need to get a new phone at an AT&T store for a service contract. Looks like that won't happen any time soon 😷
Yup, this has been an issue since the Mavic Mini came out. It's absurd that more devices aren't compatible
Air Sense works great. It went off on Mavic Air 2 while I was inputing the camera settings. I live by an Airport and the warning was quite clear on the remote and the location of the other aircraft showed on the map, then I heard it fly over. Very nice!
It will be really helpful for you in particular 👍🏼
The whole point of having ADS-B, is to allow you to know the location, altitude and speed of the other aircraft. I'm surprised it does not include it. Perhaps in a later software update. That would be very useful. BTW, I purchased one , and waiting for it.
I heard that this feature is not available in Europe.
It's actually mandatory in the US by law, but not in Europe
Thanks, that's really cool. I saw the label on the side of my drone and didn't know what it was. Also, that app is really cool thanks for mentioning it!
Thanks Billie. Not convinced we need to know the type of aircraft, it really matters not. Altitude is a different matter and yes knowing that would be a real safety addition.
you from the Philly area? what are some good places to fly around there?
Yeah! Check out my video regarding the best places to fly in Philly - th-cam.com/video/cLNiM6RYmQU/w-d-xo.html
Awesome! You live close by, shooting in Philly is a ton of fun
This system seems to make a lot more sense than remote ID. This actually provides a function as a safety system. Remote ID just makes everything about having a drone difficult but at the same time nothing is safer than it is right now.
dji mavic air 2 activation error 1112 DJI no help at all a lot of people getting this.
Thanks!
Maybe you have an early production run or something
All three of my batteries have white logos also
@@brendalg4 I thought that but then noticed all of the review units that were sent out a month ago in every early TH-cam video were grey.
Can the mavic 2 pro props fit the mavic air 2? 😆
Haven't tried😂
Billy Kyle I just noticed they have different connectors M2P have 3 prongs MA2 has 2 prongs.
Not avalible in european version of air2.
I thought the Enterprise models had ADS-B, I know the Dual does.
Can you do a (how fast does the DJI mavic series) including the spark pls
Here in the land down under no air sense for us ! I guess were not required by law, personally this being my first drone i couldn't care less, just fly it, shoot with it and have some fun, one less thing i need to be concerned with and if i takeout a plane then thats just too bad
were u not in a no fly zone?
Very nice explained. short exact and understandable without overestimated intro, mentioning 100 times to subscribe and all this stuff, like seen on other channels. Great work.
Great video!
Great vídeo
Thank you.
Thanks Scott! The Mavic 2 Pro would be perfect for commercial work, I would go with that for the best image quality with superb portability.
Billy Kyle thank you!
I would be ok with having this on my drones. Another great video, thanks.
Still having difficulty with my transmission to the screen. It goes green and other colors. Any advice?I just recently got the Phantom 4 Pro.
Great info.
Informative video, but knowing the altitude of the manned aircraft would be helpful. I drop altitude, & never loss line of sight of my drone. Know where your flying at all times.
I just got my mavic air 2 yesterday and it is awesome.
Awesome! Have fun
Thanks billy as usual a really well put together video. The bummer is I am in Europe and that doesn’t have it. Thanks DJI. I feel so much safer not having this on the drone NOT.
I agree the European mavic air 2 dosnt have air sense but were still paying the same price for it
Mine gives vocal warnings of aircraft in Chinese.
Mine does this too. Android app? DJI customer support just said that they would be updating the app in the future, no acknowledgement of the issue
@@brendalg4 What is a blue area? Which military base? Do you know what class air space it is B,C,D, E, G?
