  • scaled the Mini Delta Fighter up to 64mm and went with 6s power. WOW. absolute beast and a blast to fly this.

    Build a twin fan version and check it's speed!
    Also, the sharp transmission between the fuselage and the fan recess is got to be causing some flow disruption and power loss... Fair that in and you'd pick up some efficiency.
    I don't know if a thrust tube would help but it would be interesting to try with and without.
    Finally, reducing the canopy height some more would reduce frontal area and help you get easier flow across the top into the fan also.

      Twin doesn't always equate to faster in RC Jets. The fastest RC jets are singles. Twin will give you more acceleration but will also introduce more drag. With a single you can produce a sleek slippery airframe. Full size scale aircraft usually never scale down efficiently. My super scale twin turbine Sukhoi Su-30MKI using two JetCat P180 NX Turbines flies like a jalopy and is slow compared to my Semi scale single Turbine BAE Hawk that uses one JetCat P180 NX Turbine.

    To increase the speed , you may want to consider a 55mm EDF with a thrust tube( not a cone tube) set up. For 55mm edf, you need a better motor ,because it gets really hot with 4 S lipo setup.

    Great design! Also seems faster to me than indicated. I agree with other comments. You will find better inflow at high speed if you radius the transition from the fuselage into the fan cutout. You might also experiment with a NACA inlet.

    Great vid.. the design were the scoop needs modifing to allow more air flow. As it air comes over the fusalage then its sculpted . Down in will cause a lot of drag.. im no expert.. ! Just seconded guessing..
    Maybe redesign air frame. With dual fans either side ! Weight would have to be increased .. but half life battery .. doubling trust . To 4kg ovrer weight of extra fan motor assembly 😁

    I think your speed my be topping out because of the air flow restrictions to the fan. The fuselage forward of the fan could be lowered a little. Great job 🎉❤❤❤

    Probably needs a longer inlet ramp on the top to the fan. I doubt it’s getting undisturbed, or enough, air.

    Would you take advice from a mech engineer?
    Didn't watch the full video so I don't know if you mention this but I'd like to see a smoother geometry ahead of the fan.
    Right now the flow coming into the fan is almost certainly detached.

    Awesome job! If I may ask, what percentage increase did you apply to the stl files when you spliced them for a 64mm version? Also, did you print it with LW PLA or regular PLA? Thanks!

      I can’t exactly remember I saturated with the math to get 128% I believe but then I cut special lip recesses in for the freewing 64 and also made other adjustments for the servos and finger holds. I can post the files for sale if it’s easier for everyone

    Yep. For max speed and good power make a thrust tube with the exhaust end at 80% diameter of the intake which is roughly 52mm. I think you'll like the results. Length should be long enough to make it to the trailing edge. Good luck.

    Can you increase the angle of the tail rudders to the delta wing and increase the size of them about ten percent? You will increase lift across the wing saving you drag and a high stall rate with airspeed. You will be impressed.

    I would add a thrust tube to that EDF- it will improve the performance (you might not need the raw thrust, but it will be more efficient)

    Flew this same EDF combo in a Rafael 64mm and topped out about 90 mph so While watching this vid I was guessing it would hit 110 mph. Maybe if you put a thrust tube extension on that exited at 90% swept intkake area it would jump up the top end.

    At that size, 106 is quite fast. My larger 70mm Yak-130 can top 110 and it really looks fast.

    5:16 it’s way more stable… Then, that’s a problem. Really fast means you have to sacrifice stability and make it more tail-heavy.

    Doppler speeds. Fairly accurate. This is how we did it back in the day before on-board GPS.
    2:43 88 mph
    6:04 86.5 mph
    8:48 104.2 mph (if 60F), 103.2 mph (if 50F)

      @@hotlapkyle Sure. You view the audio as a spectrogram to get the coming and going frequencies. You also need temperature. Then you do some math. I've got an excel sheet that I got many years ago where I do the calculations.

I have a 69mm fan & 60amp ESC with a 28-25 3600rpv brushless motor, but don't know how to put it all together in a inexpensive airframe, I don't want outright speed, just want something that can fly well at moderate speed

    Ooo. Upgrade your powerplant? HET 6404 fan and a short 28mm inrunner. Extra credit for a high eRPM esc. You’ll get more useful power per watt.

      HET6404 is ancient. And a short 28mm inrunner probably has less than half the power this setup has. He built this to go fast, not to be efficient.

      Efficient is fast. If you want more output power lower the blade count (unfortunately loud), lower the pole count on your motor and get a modern ESC with a high switching frequency. Really you want a 4 pole inrunner...

      @@JustAnotherBigby Efficient isn't necessarily fast. I think you are right with lower blade count for higher RPM. Depending on the pitch of the blades the motor can unload a bit and you should get decent dynamic thrust. I haven't flown a 6704 for many years. The ARC motors are amazing. The 28-47 isn't that short! I bought a couple of different ARC motors after LightflightRC closed down. By the way, this Freewing motor is an inrunner with kevlar wrapped rotor and stator with a core. It looks slightly bigger than an ARC 28-47.
