I have a 2002 roadking classic that I need to do this to. I saw right off that you forgot to hang your lifters, but we all make mistakes but no harm no foul. Great video.

I always wondered why Harley didn’t use some kind of a wheel type tensioner instead of a shoe. It seems to me that something that turns with the chain instead of just dragging would be more efficient. Just my thought on this.

I agree. But seems modern Harley have set it up so you have to keep taking the bike in to them and spend more money on parts etc.

Have the same bike but a 2001 . Changed the oil and saw pieces floating in the pan of oil . 42 k miles .
2002 softail standard has 48k . Thought it should be checked too . Sure enough primary tensioner pitted and the secondary tensioner was missing a piece . Found it in the bottom of the case after I took the world apart .
Got my work cut out for me . Gonna need to remove the oilpan on the roadking .

For me motorcycling is all about getting out there and enjoying the journey. Engine breakdowns like this one are a huge disinsentive to people even thinking about buying a twin cam motorbike. Harley twin cam chain tensioner failure if not picked up on early can lead to complete engine failure as all the debris get flushed through the oil pump which chokes off oil to other parts of the engine. If you/re lucky like this bike owner, you possess the necessary mechanical skills and the specialised tolls to tackle the job. The other alternative, if you're wealthy, is to take it to the Harley dealer and pay exorbitant fees for them to do the job. So the question is, why would i ever buy a twin cam motorbike that carries an in built time bomb built into it that has the potential blow up a 1000 miles from home? Save yourself a lot of tears, stress and money, if you're going to buy a motorbike, make sure its one that hasn't got a twin cam engine.

I NEED HELP PLEASE. I followed the video step by step. I did remove the oil pump to install new o rings and when i put everything back together, I hear a loud ticking noise when the engine idles, when i rev the ticking sounds louder. I don't know whats wrong. I re-aligned everything and I triple checked EVERYTHING that it was all aligned. I made sure I followed every step exactly I have taken the bike apart 3 TIMES and done every step. Lubricated every important pieces. I need help PLEASE. I don't know whats wrong. My bike never did this before.

I know this is a very late reply- did you find out the source of the ticking? It sounded like the oil pump might not have been centered from your description. The video showed the lower rocker box being removed... you DO NOT have to remove the lower rocker box- just the rockers themselves so you can get at the pushrods. Anyway- just curious and I hope you DID in fact find the cause. I'm assuming you didn't ride it with the ticking.

@lynskyrd I found out the issue, I LITTERALLY looked everywhere AND NOT A SINGLE VIDEO mentioned my problem, I talked with someone on TH-cam who was a mechanic in the comments and he told me to let the bike run for at least 5 min, supposably the problem was that the rockers were not lubricated with oil and it was making the ticking noise. I was supposed to let the bike run for several minutes to let the oil run through and lubricate everything. Even tho I made sure the rockers were lubricated with oil. They still made noise but the problem is gone. Still bothers me that LITTERALLY no one ever mentions this.

@@luisruiz5933 interesting. I did my bike, my nephew's bike and a friend's bike- never heard the ticking but--- I always pour oil at the top of the rockers before I put the cover on. I do that with my Evos and my TC. Anyway- glad you got it sorted out. Thanks for the reply.

Harley should have kept gear drive cams like Evolution engines. They also should not have discontinued entry level offerings but Harley now wants to sell only high end. Harley customers are migrating to Indin because of Harley greed,

Harley owners aren't rotating enough towards Indian to make a difference. Indian isn't selling very many bikes

Hey dude, your shoes, your cam chain tensioner shoes are disintegrated and what you don't get out of that cavity in that cavity. What you don't get is scattered throughout your motor. I don't really think you understand what's going on here. Your oil pump is in the same cavity. That means that all the little pieces of plastic went into your motor and you could be screwed big time
