I don't know what hurts more: the horror and realization on his face when he says you'll never be free, the wording alone of "and I'll weep, wondering what happened to my mad love," or the way that dialogue implies he'd walk away because he loves you too much to be able to mercy kill you before the inevitable.
The fact that he fully expects to close himself off again and never form another meaningful attachment, never fall in love again, not in a thousand years after you're gone. A millenia of loneliness is his future without you. JUST RIP MY HEART TO SHREDS, LARIAN. And Neil Newbon acted his ass off in this game, but this scene especially is incredible.
It is truly Beautiful. And shows that he still does have heart even after all that. Astarion shows love by not being able to harm you, Lae'zel i believe would show us love by not allowing us to slip too far and ending us while we still had some part of ourselves left. She might weep for us, but her life has been dogmatic and self sacrifical up until meeting us

Idk, there's a certain dialogue in Act 3 where he talks about the time Cazador buried him alive. It was a punishment because he was supposed to lure certain man back to Cazador and he couldn't, so he tried to run away. He speaks of that man very fondly, as if he had feelings for him. I do think that loosing Tav would be absolutely devastating for him and he would need a very long time to process it but maybe there would be hope for him to love again.

But guys. It's actually so much worse in the ending of the game... I finished the game on this save path (I'll never consider it canon for my lovely boys and I deleted it after I finished recording all dialogue paths) and the Urges overwhelm Durge the minute the tadpole is gone, but only after Astarion runs to hide from the sun. Tav has to either stab themselves to death immediately (right in front of other companions) to not become a mindless murderer. If they take merely a moment to plan their future, whatever it is, they get possessed by Bhaal right at the docks. Red glowy eyes, "Orin's" dagger spawning in their hand out of nowhere, all sanity and will gone. And them walking into the city with the dagger in hand is how the game ends. Durge and Astarion never get their last day together. Astarion running away from the sun is the last time they see each other. No last goodbye, no last celebration, not even an hour of victory bliss and peace. In the video, Astarion sounds like he hopes to have at least a few months with the Dark Urge, maybe. At least a few days of enjoying the complete freedom together. In the end, he never got any time with them. AGAIN, THOUGH: THIS IS JUST ONE OF MANY OUTCOMES. Your Dark Urge playthrough (and my "canon" one as well) can be completely different.

Astarion's character development is *chef's kiss* the fact that he enjoyed gore so much in the beginning and now is so repulsed by it is such a huge change. also thanks for making me cry ;__;
In fairness if you feed into his darker parts it becomes a "you'll sit right on my lap, prehaps naked, while i give orders to our dark army" so... The pain is only there if they fall off wave langth with eachother.

My evil durge didn't like that, at first we thought could play his lover's game and gain immortality through vampirism, but we had enough disrespect and tried breaking up with him. Astarion showed his true colors saying how dare we break ties, calling us a fool and a worm. We understood that he was never going to be the same man we once knew. The power corrupted him. In the end, I used the Nether stone to take over the absolutes power and control the tadpoles and in doing so, controlled him. Couldn't help but feel a bit of irony.

Even until the very end Astarion told me to betray Orpheus, and when my character did, I'm guessing he wasn't expecting my character to mind control him too. At first I didn't like that, but now I realize it makes so much sense for my character to betray his love like that and it's so ironic for the vampire supreme.
Honestly I feel like there’s not many “canon” or “intended” things in this game where so many options are possible, but DUrge X Astarion feels like it should be set in stone, their stories just work so well together

Act 1 astarion: barely is a net positive. Act 2 Astarion: okay he’s lifting a bit of the veil and it’s appreciated. Act 3 Astarion: come on best buddy we got this. Thankfully in the long run, Astarion isn’t just an evil character.

yes, there is. have Astarion not Ascend, win the duel with Orin, defy Bhaal, destroy the Netherbrain. there's your happy ending. he won't be able to walk in the sun (yet) but you'll both be fully free and together.
you can "defy Bhaal" only as a Dark Urge. what I meant by it is that you stand up for yourself and try to get rid of the Urges. something really unexpected happens when you tell him you're refusing him, but at the end of the day, you fully lose these Urges and become your own person. again, what I just described is one of three possible endings to Dark Urge's quest. from this, there will be multiple more possible endings to the game itself, too. I can assure you, happy ending is very possible. my Dark Urge boy and Astarion got their sappy happy ending. this video is an outcome I never saved because a happy ending is not achievable at all after this video.
Seriously though, if you're playing on honor mode, you may end up in this messed up situation. 😢 This is why my playthrough will have all the save scumming in the world. Cue the Mushu line: Dishonor on you! Dishonor on your cow...

Kind of underwhelmingly, to be honest. "Well done again on besting Bhaal and all that. It was very... twee. Especially the part where that poor excuse for a skeleton waved his magic wand and made it all... better." And some reactions lead to more sentimental answers like: "I knew you had that sweet heart all along. I was alarmed by you sometimes, scandalised even, but somehow by your side, I still only ever saw you." Still, he doesn't get very openly emotional, unfortunately. Perhaps he's still learning to embrace and express his happiness openly, who knows.
Now if someone can write a fan fiction that takes place 1000 years later in a more modern Balder's Gate where your Durge is resurrected without the memories of their past with Astarion and Astarion has to get them to fall in love with him again... That would be great 👍🏽😅
Oh my god, just found this video. I am on my 2nd playthrough as a resistant Durge and romanced Astarion. Just came back from Cazadors Palace where I prevented my Love from ascending. Had no idea that THIS outcome was possible and I swear to hell I will do anything to keep that happening to my two sweet boys. I had romanced Astarion on my 1st playthrough as a good tav, as well. But the relationship with him as a Durge seems so much deeper and rewarding for both of these troubled souls, therefore an outcome like in the video is not acceptable. Good to know!!! Thankyou for showing us, I wept.
This scene is the same in him ascended, no changes at all. And also if you talk to him again right after all that, he still has the same lines that your love is forever and so on, like if this conversation never happened... now I wonder how the ending of this choice would be
all the characters are so well written (and I blame inuyasha for making me so obsessed with white hair characters)...but damn if astarion doesnt have some of the best lines.

Oh my god, just found this video. I am on my 2nd playthrough as a resistant Durge and romanced Astarion. Just came back from Cazadors Palace where I prevented my Love from ascending. Had no idea that THIS outcome was possible and I swear to hell I will do anything to keep that happening to my two sweet boys.
I had romanced Astarion on my 1st playthrough as a good tav, as well. But the relationship with him as a Durge seems so much deeper and rewarding for both of these troubled souls, therefore an outcome like in the video is not acceptable. Good to know!!! Thankyou for showing us, I wept.
