When I was first romancing Astarion as Durge, and knowing his full backstory from my previous playthrough, I did wonder in the back of my mind how much Astarion was genuinely into Durge's unhinged behavior and how much of it was him REALLY laying on the charm extra thick as a defense mechanism because he was lowkey afraid of her. I was thinking about how he says at one point that he’s been feral from hunger so he probably identifies with that a lot and if he can’t help Durge through hers, then what hope is there for him?
I think in act 1 when he thought durge was just a regular super violent person he was fine with it just like he's fine with Laezel being super violent(and himself) but when he realized theyre under someone elses control and that none of this is their choice he became determined to help them. He thinks of Durge and the Dark Urge as two separate entities. Durge is the person he truly knows. "The Dark Urge" is who they become when they are taken over by bhaal's influence and he doesnt hold Durge responsible for those acts because he knows them to be better than that so he isn't afraid of them. Even if The Dark Urge does kill him he at least knows it was not Durge because durge would never consciously hurt him which is why he says that "you give me something to care for and that's worth the peril". He accepts that while it is a possibility its not their fault and they are already forgiven for it.
Out of all your companions, Astarion is the only one who knows what it is to be under a compulsion (which the Urge is), and for his body to act without his control. Out of everyone, he's the only one who can properly understand what Durge is going through. For two hundred years, Cazador made him do unspeakable things without his consent. Of course he would want to help you resist - he can be for you what he so desperately wanted someone else to be for him.
So yeah, I've seen people make compelling arguments towards Durge being the canonical protagonist, and Astarion being the canonical love interest because of that particular point you're mentioning
He also is the only one who is convinced that you're possessed "Whatever it is that's controlling you, we can fight it, I know that better than anyone." "This thing won't have you, it won't win." and speaks to the thing possessing you, insulting and taunting it "You're cute, you know, in another life we might have been friends." "A little late, but good effort, now just relax, dawn will be here soon.", threatening it "Growl all you want, it won't stop the dawn, this will be over soon.", and you can see a clear anger in his eyes at the "thing" for doing this to you, this is specially noticeable in the "A little late, but good effort," he lets out a small chuckle, probably having a little fun at the lame way the thing can't do anything to him, and suddenly his tone and expression changes dramatically, as if he remembered then that that thing is still torturing the person he loves. "I'd rather be the only dark power in your body.... if it's all the same to you" Boi if you don't get your cheeky ass out of here... caught me so off guard the first time
This might be my favorite Astarion romance scene, tbh. It's a rare instance of serious Astarion. He KNOWS when the time for jokes and lines and silliness is over, but that darkness itself? He'll mock it with everything he has.
"you like him for more than his looks, but he will never believe that" is so VILE. a vampire, who cannot see his reflection, forgot his eye color and misses seeing his face (possibly not remembering it accurately anymore?) thinking that his looks are the only likeable thing about him? bye, i need to lie down. his sense of self worth or rather lack thereof destroys me.
Also, this line is supposed to make the Dark Urge second guess their relationship together. They'rere fighting their very nature by resisting their urge, and for what? To love someone fundamentally unable to love them back? It's such a calculated line meant to portray the Dark Urge's feelings as futile. Like you said, it's vile.

1:21 is such a brilliant line. Firstly, it prods into Astarion's self loathing and all the ways it destabilizes the relationship. His lies and insecurity tainted any intimacy you guys shared during during Act 1. It's the reason he takes so long to confess his feelings in Act 2. And Astarion's desperation to become "worthy" of lovd nearly makes him into a monster during Act 3. But that second sentence is just as much of a dig at the Dark Urge. When first meeting Astarion, they imagine him as a "pretty corpse." Repeating the line here, it's no longer a shocking intrusive thought, but a fully fledged obsession. Why fight for better lives together when someday you'll surely snap? Won't this whole charade of protecting him be futile in the end?
Oh hell nah I can't even watch that video without pausing every two seconds to stop fkn blushing I thought I was over bg, but it's time to start a new playtrough...
I know the order you get the long rest scenes depends on a lot of factors. But I've gotta say, this works so much better before Astarion confesses his true feelings. You can tell that these two care about each other but are so afraid to admit it. This whole situation forces them to confront their feelings and act on them. It's super sweet and makes Astarion opening up on his own free will even more earned. Like this night woke him up to the reality that he is loved and capable of loving others.

Ive never played any BG game in the series but I would love just for this man. But I only played myself the witcher 3 and skyrim so im not very experienced player. Few questions; do you make choices in this game that can lead to romance with astarion? And do I need to play 1st and 2nd game to play 3rd one? Is the plot strongly connected between parts of the series? Because 1st part is kind of old game and idk if its worth playing or just the 2nd part? Or maybe go straight to 3rd?
1) it's an RPG and *very* heavy on the roleplaying aspect, so yes, there are many choices for you to do and some of them lead to a romance with Astarion, and some don't. If you're an asshole to him he can and will refuse you. 2) not really. the game takes place 100 years after bg2, so while there are some callbacks or returning characters, the main story is completely separate. it may be worth playing bg1 and 2 afterwards if you like the game and would love to know more about the world, but it's definitely not necessary to understand the story.

I actually managed to get this scene with him before the hug! I had exceptionally high approval with Astarion so idk if that helps, but basically I resisted the urge to kill Isobel at Last Light Inn. Then I got this scene with the butler next long rest. I then had the scene telling off Araj and the hug scene after that. It was actually super sweet the way it played out in my game because the two scenes ended up happening almost back to back. Astarion helping Urge and then Urge standing up for him. I love how casual Astarion is about all of this. He’s right. You’ve killed how many? A few dozen? If we’re generous. He’s done it for two centuries. To him, you’re but a rookie. Blood thirst is his nature. You’re just like a toddler spilling precious nourishment thinking you’re interesting.
The Dark Urge has killed thousands for Bhaal before the nautiloid crash
@@uwu-uv4mg that is still a novice next to a two century old vampire.
No one talked about his scared face ? He 's really scared. I ask myself what happend . What happend before Urge wake up. Did they have a fight ? 😢 it mjst bd real terrifying.😮
does this always happen or just if you refuse to kill the girl on Last night inn?
You have to reguse killing isobel
What are your video settings if you don’t mind me asking? Couldn’t tweak my game to look as good sadly

Ok all I wanna know is how to get that rainbow color dice. I have the deluxe edition and I don't have that option... How do I unlock this?
Hi, this is from the astral dice mod which you can find here: www.nexusmods.com/baldursgate3/mods/1266
Night passes sick and sweating? Sounds like the time I took a 600mg delta 9 gummi and spent the night hearing demon screeches. The take away was that I didn't do enough drugs o3o
👏 ok, having trouble triggering this scene. Anyone know how?
Chose not to kill isobel, but before i even got the quest i had told her that i didnt want to kill her and yada yada, wondering if that fucked it. Cause i moved on to act 3 and the quest completed implying that the scene had happened? Except the cutscene didnt trigger
If anyone could lend a hand please lmk 🙏 romanced astarion specifically for this scene
Random, but what dice skin mod is that? I love it!
I love his costume where can you find it please ? 😮
Does this only trigger after the hug scene?
Chronologically it's afterwards, yeah.
It made the hug scene afterwards feel extra special. ❤
Can I know the name of mod for hair?
It's from this mod: www.nexusmods.com/baldursgate3/mods/1017 I haven't tried it on the latest patch but it should still work :)
@@clocksprocket Thx
Where do you get astarions black shirt?
You can purchase dye ingame and dye the clothes
Can you get this after he has asked to be your friend?
HAIR MOD???
is that haircut actually in the game? 😭 i didnt see it anywhere, is it a mod? :( its soo pretty
For the player character I used this mod: www.nexusmods.com/baldursgate3/mods/1017 The hairstyle itself is used by one of the umberlee priestesses you see in act 3!
@@clocksprocket thx!!
