One thing that always comes to mind whenever I see this trailer again is how the scene of the ship crashing into the jedi temple was re-enacted basically 1:1 in Thor: The Dark World when the dark elf ship crashes into the palace of Asgard. :D
At the 29:45 mark you mention the lightsabers being turned off, when this was made, it was pretty well established in the lore that there was a safety mechanism that deactivated the blade when dropped, and that a force-user could override that mechanism it when using the Force to throw it.
@@pezdispencer113 She becomes a target quite a bit after this fight. Other sith mention her and have disdain for her since the empire at this point is still very anti alien. Even a jedi goes after her in revenge for killing her master zallow. Malgus realizes 2 things 1 he's at his strongest when he's fighting for his lover and 2 she will also be his greatest weakness as if the jedi are willing to go for her then his own enemies inside the empire will surely as well. So in the usual twisted sith logic he takes off his mask and embraces her one last time before impaling her blaming his enemies for having to kill her and using his anger that his love was taken from him by his enemies forcing his hand.
One thing that dawned on me is how Malgus is standing in the shadow at 9:24 and in my head that really shows he’s immersed in the dark side in contrast to the guards who are standing out of it. Just picked up on that lol
If i remember the lore for this correct, the Sith Empire had called for a ceasefire negotiation, and at the start of it lunched this sneak attack on Coruscant. Holding the Republic's capital allowed them to negotiate a way better deal. The game then starts in the ceasefire periode as it's rapidly breaking down
The fricking punch of the lightsaber hilt to the face is so awesome! I wish it was done more in fights because using the hilt to punch the enemy in the face is so unexpected and so creative!
30:10 from some pieces of lore it's stated that a lightsaber is activated and deactivated through the force. Getting hit, lethal or almost, drastically changes the lightsaber wielder's connection to the force (for the worse) and acts as a emp in a way and disables the wielders lightsaber. Or at least force sensitives use it through the force, non force sensitives can still use them like general grievous through some sort of activation while holding onto the saber. I just doubt they can use it that well without the force.
If you look at 30:22, I always imagined that the voice over was him actually saying the line to the Jedi. Especially you can see in Malgus' movement and the Jedi acknowledging what he said with his eyes looking up past Malgus.
Metal Gear Solid 4 cutscenes would be a treasure trove of reaction vids! Plenty to choose from. Raiden vs Gekkos/Vamp for example, or the final fight between Old Snake and Ocelot.
1:35 - Shae Vizsla, "Mandalore the Avenger." Same bloodline as Tarre Vizsla (the first Mandalorian Jedi) and Paz Vizsla (the heavy Mandalorian in The Mandalorian.)
Nope, different families. Its Shae Vizla. Shae Vizla is from the EU and the Vizslas you mentioned are exclusive to canon, while both universes have a Clan Vizsla.
Great stuff and a really awesome Trailer that I keep coming back to year after year! Always nice to see these trailers through a professional's eyes, keep it up mate!
Disney forgot that THIS IS WHAT STAR WARS IS ABOUT. Big light saber fight and big armies shooting lazers at each other with huge orchestral scores banging in your ears.
I really like how they went about making these trailers in terms of storytelling. The first three trailers take place years before the players story begins. Despite this, the characters from the trailers are on all the cover art, even the ones that are dead, because they are essentially representations of the classes that the player can pick. Yet they still have names and are referenced later by other characters. It makes the player feel like they are just another footnote in history, and these trailers are essentially an extended opening cutscene
29:50 I think lightsabers have these safety mechanisms so they deactivate automatically when they hit the ground. There also could be a more "spiritual" explanation. As the Jedi and the lightsaber crystal are attuned through the Force, when the Jedi dies, the crystal "dies" too. Nope, scratch that, I'm stupid. I remembered, you can pick up a dead Jedi's saber and use it without a problem. Though the concept would be cool I think. :D
I’ve been looking forward to this! Deceived is my favorite of the three original trailers. Edit: 2:23 that’s is Lord Adraas. He’s also seen later in the trailer breaking the ground beneath a group of troopers*
@@kaizammitYep, the release order of the trailers ahead of the game launch were Deceived, Hope, and then Returned, which is backwards from the chronological order of the story they tell. The other trailers came later with expansion content.
30:20- regarding the lightsaber being turned off, so lightsabers have a Botton that you need to hold to activate it that is for safety purposes so that you don't drop it and kill someone or turn it on by accident.
@@kaizammit Yeah, it's based on the idea of a "dead-man's switch". Where the activation button or trigger needs constant pressure from the thumb, finger or grip to keep the lightsaber active. In the lore from the books, some Jedi take it a step further by designing the activation button internally built inside the hilt. That means from the outside appearance, you wouldn't even see a button at all, nor be able to activate it by physical touch. You would have to be a force user to telekinetically hold the button down inside the hilt, with your mind.
@WakingDreamer01 it's a well thought out safety feature. Imagine if it didn't turn off, if some one drops their light saber in a building or a space ship, it would drop right through the floors. I wonder, how long would it take to get the the core of a planet.
The first cutscene can also be read in the book "star wars the old republic: Deceived" highly recommend the legends books to any traditional star wars fan!
Hey dude, I just wanna say, thank you for making my vocabulary a bit more colorful. Ever since you used the term “leitmotif” to describe music cues, I’ve started using it to express my love for any type of theme in games, movies, and shows lol
The difference between the quality of these scenes (made to market a game) and the newer Star Wars trilogy for me is that the team making these scenes were obviously Star Wars fans, people who knew and enjoyed the universe where as the sequel trilogy comes across as an utter cash grab made by people who didn't care and just wanted to make a quick buck to justify the purchase of Lucusfilm and it's IP's by Disney. I would have been so much happier if the team making these scenes had been given the opportunity to make Star Wars films, I feel they would have got it right.
I know you're not actually trying to make these videos ASMR, but as someone who enjoys ASMR, half of why I watch is you have a very soothing voice. You'd be great at ASMR

This was actually the first trailer they dropped for the game. For some reason they released the trailers in reverse chronological order. People went absolutely nuts when out of no where this trailer dropped.
29:48 Thank you for saying what we are all thinking! 😂 I mean, they are looking into each other's eyes for a good few seconds, there is nothing stopping the jedi from just slicing the sith in two by rotating his wrist! Thus taking the sith with him! Seriously, it's not just this video ether, it's one of those troupes that is VERY pervasive throughout the Starwars franchise.
This Is Definitely My Favorite SWTOR Cutscene. The Fight Sequence Was Exactly How I Envisioned It In My Head When My Friends And I Would Play With Our Light Sabers 😂
The hype and release of this game was an amazing time in gaming, these trailers tell a mini story of their own and I'm really looking forward to seeing them broken down.
My best friend, right after watching it for the first time with me: "Did you seen THAT?!? We have to save the republic!" (it was months before the release od SWTOR)
The beauty and carnage, of Star Wars... honestly, the old republic is PEAK content. So much lore to explore. Good thing the force isn't real, i am unnaturally pulled towards the dark side, having to resist doing evil things like an urge.
How did I miss this one between all the rest, anyway, popcorn in hand, ready for some R&R (reaction & review)... and to top it off the 4th in the mini-series is recently uploaded as well... nice to see you are thoroughly getting invested in the Empire vs Republic conflict, down to low key even rooting for one faction or the other as the battle rages between the individuals in it. EDIT; You know you're getting pulled in & investing in the cinematic when questions just start bubbling, answering themselves as you continue to brew up more... (fixed grammar as well).
You might like watching some Metal Gear Solid V trailers/ cutscenes, the long-cut/ single shot scenes make it feel like there’s an actual cameraman running around during the epic moments
Not sure if anyone else has mentioned it, but the ship crashing scene was a tech demo for Nvidia showing off the new physics engine they had developed but no one knew what it was for until this trailer came out.
If I’m remembering right, when the trailers were first unveiled, there was no narration. It was when the game went into full release they added titles and narration to Hope and Deceived, and had them be a kinda opening for the Sith and Republic characters. Am I the only one that remembers the trailers without narration, or am I remembering wrong?
My understanding of why sabers always deactivate when their wielder is struck a mortal blow is because force users use the force to keep the sabers active. They can be manually triggered but that's more of a failsafe. So once they die they lose focus on keeping the blade active and it goes out.
Get what you mean about the "stiffnes" with the lightning shot. Small, subtle movements can give a sense of effortlessness and power, however I'd say with Malgus they instead opted to display his passion during combat by moving his whole body like they did. You see it in the main fight with the Jedi leader a bit later, Malgus is very dynamic in his fighting style, both heavy and fast, and it contrasts rather nicely with his otherwise calm demeanor throughout the rest of the trailer. Also about him sounding less aggressive than before, I'd say it shows his growth over the trailers, from more of a thug-like young apprentice to a calm and collected Sith lord. It's not like his rage has dissapeared, but it shows him controlling it instead of being controlled by it. Malgus for me straddles a nice line middle ground between the two main Sith stereotypes, those of an angry brute and devious schemer. Malgus starts as the former, but matures and aquires the skills to be more than a powerful tool in someone elses hands, still keeping his core as a frontline menace. In the game itself, Malgus is easy to like from the Empire side, decisive but respectful to the capable player characters, without the prejudices against alien races or class distinctions between Sith and non-sith. He also is not pointlessly evil for the sake of evil like some Sith are, instead giving the vibe of a general concerned solely with winning the conflict, willing to cut down enemy and useless ally alike. EDIT: Want to add, the coupl of quick shots around the middle of the fight do a good job selling the hectic nature of it, with Malgus's lighting it goes from left to right, Mandalorian's flames go from right to left before sweeping in a circle, then the Jedi leader grabs Malgus's companion with the direction from the front to the back followed by a Sith jumping from the back to the front and slamming down. By throwing our eyes quickly in all directions across those quick shots, it gives us the feeling of being in the middle of the action, almost overwhelming us on purpose. EDIT2: Like with the first(chronologicaly) trailer, this one blends storytelling with what's in the game itself greatly. You see the Sith Warrior class, with their first companion being a dual-wielding Twi'lek, a Bounty Hunter class(the Mandalorian) with their flamethrower and jetpack and the Jedi Guardian class with the quick shot of their first companion the astromech droid(which is probably why they put it in without it doing much of anything).
What's interesting about these 3 trailers is this one was the announcement reveal trailer at E3 for the game. Then hope and finally the return. Now in-game for the story you have the return, hope and then this one. It's also interesting with this one malgus face looks more detailed compared to the other 2 yet this was the very first trailer. Wait till you see the next 3 trailers. The twilek character with malgus is his wife. For a sith, he isn't your typical destroy everything villian
Yeah when you play the games and read the lore about him, he's actually has this odd sense of honour and will always keep his word. He also respects his worthy opponents. Don't get me wrong is a bad guy but he's a fleshed out character, with lots of shade grey.
You should totally check out the battle field 1 trailers. They are considered to be some of the best, and most epics trailers to exist. Aw the hype was real for the games haha
Love it when you do these breakdowns of the swtor trailers, I've watched this one dozens of times! There is a version of this trailer with different narration which plays when you create a dark side character in the game. But I prefer this version.
the only problem- outside the temple the shadows where from the side and the gate was in front. then they enter the temple and the shadow fall in front of them long as if there is a light source there (no sun there and no large building to reflect light either)....yet when the shuttle crashes in the outside frames show the sun still being on the left side. from lore the deactivation of lightsaber when getting mortally wounded might be explained by following 2 things (established in real SW media): when dueling force users partially channel force through the saber for it to be like part of the body, but also (suposedly) shield their saber from enemy's force intervention so the enemy cannot use force to push off button, mess with the tuning of the saber, saber's mode switching or plain crushing of the saber, kinetic manipulation and similar. getting stabbed in the gut might brake that focus allowing the enemy to manipulate the saber. (when using saber throw the saber is still gripped and manipulated by the force of the user). and also according to the lore, the sabers by custom always are made to deactivate if "not used" (not gripped, dropped and similar), witch is kinda logical, as dropping an activated lightsaber in a space station or spaceship might lead to quite a lot of fun stuff.
Just a tad bit about the lore, The "Titan vs Titan" Malgus is facing is the Jedi Battlemaster. He's suppose to be the most capable fighter in the order and to see malgus crush him is another "woah" factor into knowing about how powerful this guy is (he's an enemy in the video game) so I believe this is just another way to show this is one powerful foe you will be facing. (sorry for the spoilers of a 12 year old game )
That Mandalorian at the very beginning is Shae Vizsla, an ancestor to the same Pre Vizsla from the Clone Wars cartoon and PAz Vizsla from the Mandalorian series and she is a descendant of Tarre Vizsla whom was responsible for the Darksabers creation whom was also the only Mandalorian to ever become a Jedi
Most Jedi light sabers have a switch they have to hold down. It's a safety thing. The sith don't use that, as safety is not normally a concern of theirs.
The reason it doesn't show him get out of the ship and starts with him already going up the steps is because he was already on the planet. That shuttle at the start was not his ship, it was the same shuttle which crashes into the the door and is full of the sith warriors.
absolutely love the videos its really cool to get all the knowledge behind creating this stuff :) If I ever made anything film related I'd definitely come to you first :D keep up the awesome videos!
I think there are a few thoughts on the lightsabers turning off when they drop them or die. I think 1 theory is that the lightsabers are fueled by the force powers of the wielder, so when they are dropped that connection is lost. Another is that you have the hold the button to keep it on, which definitely would take training. I think the latest movies have moved very far away from both of these... (Then again Grievous could use lightsabers, despite not having any explained force sensitivity)

I've been waiting for the constantly delayed remake of KotOR to come out to play this game lol, so that the remade cinematics look more like these trailers ive seen
The thing with the lightsabers being turned off when they drop it and keep it on while they throw it. Some say it's because the Lightsaber crystal inside is synchronized to it's wielder thus it turning off when they die. But that wouldn't make much sense because Anakin didn't die and yet his was off on the ground when Obi Wan picked it up. Other's say it's because there's a sensor built into the lightsaber that responds to touch and only then can they turn it on or off, letting go would automatically turn it off. But then why can they then throw the lightsaber at enemies cutting them down and it don't turn off if it relies on sensors. I don't know honestly.
You mention you don't see him land on the landing pad, that's because the ship that you see at the beginning is the one carrying all the Sith that crashes through the front of the temple :)
Have been waiting for this video enjoyed it just as much as the others well done, its been a shame star wars has stopped making cinematics like this, the most recent one simply didn't match the others at all in terms of style

One thing that always comes to mind whenever I see this trailer again is how the scene of the ship crashing into the jedi temple was re-enacted basically 1:1 in Thor: The Dark World when the dark elf ship crashes into the palace of Asgard. :D
"nah sunshine, fuck off" imagine malgus revealing that he has an english accent 🤣
Would rock! 😂💪🏻
...what accent do you think Malgus has?
😂@@Sinewmire
At the 29:45 mark you mention the lightsabers being turned off, when this was made, it was pretty well established in the lore that there was a safety mechanism that deactivated the blade when dropped, and that a force-user could override that mechanism it when using the Force to throw it.
1:47 - Eleena Daru, the blue Twi'lek, is the love of Malgus. He freed her from the slave pens on Genosis.
And then strikes her down to rid himself of weakness
@@ItsMartinez141 seems a bit weird, since passion and strong emotions are seen as a strength for Sith.
@@pezdispencer113 Its more of a weakness others can exploit against him.
@@henningratjen4364 can't be that much of a weakness if he's willing to kill her.
17:57 Ah, the Liam Neeson over the fence cut. I'll never forget it for as long as I live. I felt so embarrassed by it. :D
One thing that dawned on me is how Malgus is standing in the shadow at 9:24 and in my head that really shows he’s immersed in the dark side in contrast to the guards who are standing out of it. Just picked up on that lol
“Nah sunshine, Fock off.” Brilliant
@@zack4915 you are rong and lieing they made the old republic canon.
Great stuff and a really awesome Trailer that I keep coming back to year after year! Always nice to see these trailers through a professional's eyes, keep it up mate!
Thank you for watching fella 🙏🏻💪🏻
Disney forgot that THIS IS WHAT STAR WARS IS ABOUT. Big light saber fight and big armies shooting lazers at each other with huge orchestral scores banging in your ears.
The movie with the cuts is Liam Neeson in Taken, 15 cuts in 6 seconds.
Taken 3 I believe, bloody crazy!
6:50 so the ship we see at the very start is actually the ship crashing into the temple later, not the ship Malgus is arriving with.
Hell yeah, been waiting for this. Can't wait for the next two too.
They'll be coming soon as I've already recorded them, whoop, whoop!
I love these the jedi and Sith fights always deliver you can really FEEL the intent to kill in each of their strikes
This was the announcement trailer. The first one
This was the first trailer to release?
@@kaizammit yes sir, I remember being a sophomore in college and getting excited as a kid again when I saw it. This was back in 2009
@@kaizammitYep, the release order of the trailers ahead of the game launch were Deceived, Hope, and then Returned, which is backwards from the chronological order of the story they tell. The other trailers came later with expansion content.
30:20- regarding the lightsaber being turned off, so lightsabers have a Botton that you need to hold to activate it that is for safety purposes so that you don't drop it and kill someone or turn it on by accident.
The handle has a built in sensor!? My mind is blown by how simple the answer was haha. Thank you for watching!
We've waited way too long for this one mate
For three hundred years we prepared
The good news is I've recorded them all now so they will be coming out much faster. Just rotating what I've recorded over the month.
@@kaizammit oh cool
The first cutscene can also be read in the book "star wars the old republic: Deceived" highly recommend the legends books to any traditional star wars fan!
Hey dude, I just wanna say, thank you for making my vocabulary a bit more colorful. Ever since you used the term “leitmotif” to describe music cues, I’ve started using it to express my love for any type of theme in games, movies, and shows lol
Love seeing your reaction to this! (did you know there are multiple versions of this? they changed the dialogue a while after its initial release!)
You NEED to watch all the cinematics. The one with the two princes especially absolutely slaps and is considered the best one by many.
I'm actually uploading that one to Patreon now. Will be on TH-cam nearer to the end of the month. I hope you enjoy it fella, I know I did!! :D
I know you're not actually trying to make these videos ASMR, but as someone who enjoys ASMR, half of why I watch is you have a very soothing voice. You'd be great at ASMR
Haha Really!? I'm to loud but I can totally get that when I whisper in the breakdowns. I'll have to remember to do it more often :D Thank you for watching. Kai
I love these old republic trailers growing up they are all really awesome and badass. :)
Besides looking good, the shadows tell the story of a republic in its late twilight as the darkness closes in on it.
This Is Definitely My Favorite SWTOR Cutscene. The Fight Sequence Was Exactly How I Envisioned It In My Head When My Friends And I Would Play With Our Light Sabers 😂
YES dude! Great breakdown, as always. Can't wait to see what you think of Knights of the Fallen Empire SWTOR cinematic!!!
Malgus is so cool and such a badass
The hype and release of this game was an amazing time in gaming, these trailers tell a mini story of their own and I'm really looking forward to seeing them broken down.
3 of them are on the channel now with the other ones coming very soon!
There is still another trailer you can watch. Its for the Knights of the fallen empire expansion. It’s titled Sacrifice.
Yes finally I’ve been waiting for this
How did I miss this one between all the rest, anyway, popcorn in hand, ready for some R&R (reaction & review)... and to top it off the 4th in the mini-series is recently uploaded as well... nice to see you are thoroughly getting invested in the Empire vs Republic conflict, down to low key even rooting for one faction or the other as the battle rages between the individuals in it.
EDIT; You know you're getting pulled in & investing in the cinematic when questions just start bubbling, answering themselves as you continue to brew up more... (fixed grammar as well).
Yes.. Yes yes yes. The Cinematic trailers that came out of SWTOR are some of the greatest
It's a good day when you drop a vid. Time to learn
You might like watching some Metal Gear Solid V trailers/ cutscenes, the long-cut/ single shot scenes make it feel like there’s an actual cameraman running around during the epic moments
That sounds interesting and cool.
Hell yeah! Darth Malgus is my all time favourite sith so im gunna be behind this one 100000%
This is just the tip of the iceberg. These cinematics all absolutely slap.
I'd say the next two cinematics are even more impressive as those have full storytelling, character arcs... it's like a mini-movie in 4 minutes.
The next one is up on my Patreon already but it will be coming to the channel soon-ish.
finally been waiting for this video for ages
The next ones will be coming along very soon, already recorded them...GULP!
@@kaizammit awesome can't wait can't believe you watched the first 2 and left the 3rd one so long loves the 40k content to thanks again
I've also recorded all the Dawn of War trailers too. I wet myself in that one. Haha
My understanding of why sabers always deactivate when their wielder is struck a mortal blow is because force users use the force to keep the sabers active. They can be manually triggered but that's more of a failsafe. So once they die they lose focus on keeping the blade active and it goes out.
I think it's as much cinematic and symbolic, as their life is extinguished so is their weapon.
EDIT:
Want to add, the coupl of quick shots around the middle of the fight do a good job selling the hectic nature of it, with Malgus's lighting it goes from left to right, Mandalorian's flames go from right to left before sweeping in a circle, then the Jedi leader grabs Malgus's companion with the direction from the front to the back followed by a Sith jumping from the back to the front and slamming down.
By throwing our eyes quickly in all directions across those quick shots, it gives us the feeling of being in the middle of the action, almost overwhelming us on purpose.
EDIT2:
Like with the first(chronologicaly) trailer, this one blends storytelling with what's in the game itself greatly.
No way, really!? That was his wife. I just thought he was to busy killing Jedi to get himself a ball and chain.
Yeah when you play the games and read the lore about him, he's actually has this odd sense of honour and will always keep his word. He also respects his worthy opponents. Don't get me wrong is a bad guy but he's a fleshed out character, with lots of shade grey.
Hence he's rememberable. He sounds awesome to be honest.

Thank you for watching!
That Mandalorian at the very beginning is Shae Vizsla, an ancestor to the same Pre Vizsla from the Clone Wars cartoon and PAz Vizsla from the Mandalorian series and she is a descendant of Tarre Vizsla whom was responsible for the Darksabers creation whom was also the only Mandalorian to ever become a Jedi
until Disney canon...Sabine and Grogu.
@@LordVader66 Yep.. had to take a unique concept since it was extremely rare amongst them and make it more common.
I highly suggest checking out the Star Wars Eclipse trailer!
Not heard of this one, I will do!

Thank you fella and I'm glad you're enjoying them!
EXCELLENT
Yeah man, these rock
I think there are a few thoughts on the lightsabers turning off when they drop them or die. I think 1 theory is that the lightsabers are fueled by the force powers of the wielder, so when they are dropped that connection is lost. Another is that you have the hold the button to keep it on, which definitely would take training. I think the latest movies have moved very far away from both of these... (Then again Grievous could use lightsabers, despite not having any explained force sensitivity)
I love your videos ! Please do the rest of the SWTOR trailers, I'm sure you'll love them. Thank you for creating such amazing reaction/breakdown vid for us.
Glad you like them! You'll be pleased to know that I've already recorded them. I've just got to cut them together :D!

I don't want to spoil it for you, but I think the last trailer they made was the first one under Disney's reign and I could tell a clear difference to the ones before (in a bad way). I wonder if you notice it as well and how you think about it.
By the way, the next trailer to come is my personal favorite, closely followed by the very first you already saw. They are all top tier, though! I've seen every single one a dozen times by now.

IIRC lightsabers generally have a deadman's switch
24:00 don't know what you are talking about there. Thats just his audition for Prettiest Sith Lord, cut the bro some slack.
You mention you don't see him land on the landing pad, that's because the ship that you see at the beginning is the one carrying all the Sith that crashes through the front of the temple :)
That would explain that then :D Thanks fella!
