- Welcome to “The Stanley Way” channel where we will cover just about every project that a typical American family will encounter. This is not a “pro how to” channel, just an ordinary guy videoing his own projects.
Current and future projects include converting two bedrooms and a bath into a movie theater, switching dryer and range from electric to gas, installing a hybrid water heater, cleaning and painting the garage floor, building a mega shed, and installing a hybrid solar panel system.
You may learn something, you may not, but somewhere along the line you will probably laugh as Wes documents even his most embarrassing mistakes.
We documented our 160” DIY spandex theater screen. This gigantic screen is very cheap to build and can be built with novice level skill. The best part, movies look awesome!!!

looks great! The best investment I've made thus far in my house was a big screen with projector. I overdid my budget with the projector (4k HDMI short throw) which left me literally ZERO DOLLAS for sound. I'm using a run of the mill 2.1 surround sound bar for now on a 200# screen.
Thanks, yeah you definitely have to pick where to spend the money. I saved a little on my projector, a lot with the screen, which allowed me to put in a pretty decent sound system. The neighbors complain so I’m doing it right, 😂. I still have a lot to do in the theater but I think it will be a never ending list of upgrades.
@@TheStanleyWay I'm ready to update my sound! I want to shake the sheetrock loose! Hahahaha. Also, if you ever decide to upgrade your projector, you simply cannot beat a short throw. It just gives you more options as far as throw distance when/if you have limited space availability. I really want a 7.1 surround system with powered subs. I love that deep rumble on the low range tones.
@@benjamin4394 I didn’t even look at short throw projectors until I mounted this one and now realize some of the issues with it being so far back. We live it but it really limits a lot of things in the room. I probably will get a short throw when I upgrade.

Which 4k short throw are you referring to? In my hunt for the same I have found BenQ tk700sti which fits the bill.

Any photos of the screen in action? Looks amazing. How far do you sit back for that monster?
Thank you, we started out with the seats about 13’ back which is awesome but with an action movie that has a lot of side to side movement it can be a little much. We have recently moved back to about 20’. We only have one row of seats right now so we wanted to try different arrangements. Moving them back takes away a little of the immersive action but it is easy on the eyes.
I have some pictures during some SpaceX launches, if I find them I will post some. Thanks for your interest.

What configuration are you using for speaker setup is it a 5.2? And I love the diy screen great job. Im shocked im just seeing this video now it definitely helps out…
Thanks. I am currently running a 5.2.2 system. I have a front left, center, right, left rear and right rear (5), I then have 2 subwoofers (2), and 2 overhead speakers (2). Thanks for the question and I appreciate the comment.
@@TheStanleyWay anytime how are you liking dolby atmos so far. Do you plan on going to a 5.2.4 or no
@@Lowkey_nxthxn we love it but most movies and shows don’t utilize the ceiling speakers but when it kicks in, you can tell. It adds so much the experience. I will definitely upgrade in the future I just need a better receiver. My plan is to upgrade to 7.2.4.
@@TheStanleyWay a 7.2.4 would definitely be amazing. And a huge upgrade over the 5.2.2
Just have been looking for spandex wide enough to do a 150" screen and all I have found is 58 to 60 inch spandex.. Where did you get yours.. Helps appreciated thanks
Spandex World but they don’t always offer spandex wider than 60”, you have to be persistent if you can’t find your size. I couldn’t get the black full width but I wasn’t worried about the black since it was only the backing.

@@PatReid if you are using 60” spandex for a 16:9 160” screen then you will use 4 yards. This will give you extra material to stretch and wrap around the frame. There are screen calculators online that you can use to help you with all the ratios.
Where were you able to purchase such large cuts of spandex that were wide enough? Joann's usually doesn't have anything wider than 60" these days :/
I bought them at spandex world.
If I remember correctly they don’t always offer spandex more than 60” wide. At the time I couldn’t get the black wide enough, but since it was the “backing” to the actual screen, it didn’t matter if it was over stretched. The white I was able to get the correct width.

need 4k projector for that size, 1080p wont cut it really so $200 turns into $1000+ and another $200 for a soundbar so your talking $1200 - $1500 and that is for a budget projector and home made screen. Is it really worth it
My 1080p projector works great with this screen and we have in wall speakers that are fantastic. So yes, it is worth it.
I don’t know if I want 120 or 150 lol

@@TheStanleyWay , saw your 160 and it blew me away. Would like to see something like that in person! I ended up going with 120! Setting it up Friday ! If it’s not enough, I’ll go for 150 next haha !
Awesome, it is pretty impressive in person. You will enjoy the 120 but bigger is better lol.

160" DIAGONAL at 16x9 is going to be (frame dependent) just shy of 12' wide. If he's close to 6' tall then use those bad peepers of yours and imaging 2 of him laying down end to end across the width and you'll easily see it's about 12' wide.
Here's a 150" Diag 16x9 Screen on Amazon, check out the dimension part where it says: Overall size: 74.4" H x 131.7" W. Then you have to do a little math; 131" divided by 12" (how many inches are in 1 foot) = about 11 feet wide.
